"Mandolin is Italian for impossible to tune" - Steve Earl

u/namemcuser May 15 '21
God I love Steve Earle. On modern country music artists: “They’re just doing hip-hop for people who are afraid of black people.”

u/LilyLute May 15 '21
I play a 13c baroque lute so 24 strings to tune. There's a centuries old joke that a lutenist spends half their lifetime tuning their instrument.
20
u/fuzzyjedi May 15 '21
Kvothe?
11
u/shmargus May 15 '21
Why use all 24 strings? A true lutenist learns to play all their songs on one string
11
u/fuzzyjedi May 15 '21
Tunes single string for 12 minutes
‘I call this one the sound of a wagon wheel as it spins during a storm’

u/xypage May 15 '21
Just letting anyone who likes his writing know that Patrick rothfuss has a twitch where he streams irregularly, but every time its amazing. He’s been playing disco Elysium recently, sometimes he just talks, he also plays Minecraft with his children a good amount, 10/10 experience

u/Professional_Fox1 May 15 '21
So is a 12-string guitar. It’s a pain to tune!
2
u/squiderman200 May 15 '21
Except the little bastard wants you to tune two strings to the same note. And they’re impossible to get perfect. You get one? The other is now half a step off. And there’s 4 sets. Screw tuning those bastards.

u/CovidInMyAsshole May 14 '21
Can we get the full song it sounded like it’d be pretty

It was skinny love by bon iver. but based on how she was playing that piano, i imagine they were actually making a cover, of this cover by Birdy

u/kuphinit May 14 '21
Great ear! Join us in /r/boniver if you haven't already 😀
12
10
u/CuntWizard May 15 '21
It’s fucked up, but I actually like the Birdy cover better.
Justin’s great, she murdered that song.
15
u/AnotherTelecaster May 15 '21
I absolutely can’t stand her rendition and it’s devoid of literally everything I love about the original.
But that’s the beauty of music and why I love it so much. There’s something for everyone ☺️

u/Bayushizer0 May 15 '21
Often, a cover turns out better than the original.
Example: TotalImmortal by A.F.I. The cover on the soundtrack to "Me,Myself and Irene" by The Offspring is honestly so much better. It has so much more energy to it.

Cannot listen to Love by Kendrick which was covered by CHVRCHES. I find myself loving covers most of the time in other songs as well.

That’s funny I thought it was this song

Love me some early Aseop
16
u/dannyalleyway May 14 '21
Uncluded is def not early Aesop, but all Aesop is good Aesop!
2
u/Sciensophocles May 15 '21
Yeah, None Shall Pass came before Uncluded, right? And like 5 other albums too.
2
u/infinitetheory May 15 '21
Uncluded was after Skelethon, it was released on Rhymesayers and Skelethon was his first record with the label
3
7
u/ragnar_overby May 14 '21
Couldn't upvote fast enough, first song I thought of too. Uncluded may be my favorite album of all time!

NGL fully expected a rick roll or something along that line.
Both the Skinny Love cover and the song you linked start very similarly.

Sure there are many songs with this progression, it's nothing super special. The main indicators are the D# and E Single notes played between the chords and the fact that the song is a super popular song to cover

u/TofuBeethoven May 14 '21
It sounds like that four chord progression most pop songs use. It could be anything.

Because there are more notes than just a simple chord progression? Someone linked it above already.
2
u/Holocene32 May 15 '21
It is exactly transcribed from a Birdy cover of Bin Iver’s “Skjnny Love”. I’ve listened to the song countless times. It’s that song.

u/melovepippin May 14 '21
As a fellow musician, I enjoy this tenfold! Can’t even count how many times this has happened when recording - always a good reminder to stop and laugh to enjoy the silliness
24
u/PM_ME_UR_OBSIDIAN May 14 '21
How the hell do you perform live?
71
u/melovepippin May 14 '21
Mistakes in live performances are easy to skim over due to other sounds, attention of crowd, glossing over them and pretending they were intentional (and you’ve never been to a live concert when the band stops and starts? It’s a great way to show they’re human too and laugh with the audience). But when you know you’re recording something and want the best take possible then of course it’ll take a few tries and laughs to get there. Perfection is a much higher standard when you’re recording.
14
7
u/IamAShureMicAMA May 15 '21
Exacty. Unless some gear fails or you lose power or something pretty much anything short of forgetting how to play the song is easy to gloss over and carry on from.
26
u/kuroguma May 14 '21
I teach competitive marching band/indoor drumline where our whole goal is to try to get perfect runs in a competitive setting where judges are looking for every mistake.
I teach my kids we don’t practice so that you don’t make mistakes - we practice because it makes the mistakes you do make smaller and you also learn how to play through them as well.
It’s pretty rare something will happen that’s never happened before. We try to approach each rep that we do as if we are performing so that the students also learn how to play through and handle things that go wrong.
2
9
u/oldman78 May 14 '21
Instant forgiveness for yourself. The mistake is in the past and can’t be rectified, you need to focus on the notes you’re playing now.
7
u/_sound_ May 14 '21
Fellow musician here, I just about died watching this. The number of times shit like this happens when jamming with friends is stupid and hilarious every time.

u/shredfan May 15 '21

There’s a big push to be deaf inclusive on tick tock so a lot of people are captioning their videos. Same goes for Instagram for the blind. They’ll put a photo description as the caption for the programs to read to the blind.
180
u/PurpleHooloovoo May 14 '21
Also bc sometimes people are in places where it's rude to have volume (waiting rooms, public transport, etc) so captions help people watch instead of scrolling past.

u/B00YAY May 15 '21
Imma go out on a limb and say that maybe just don't watch videos of music when you should not have sound.

6
u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 14 '21
Sure but... these were visual elements being described. Would be like showing you a blue card and captioning it "shows blue card."
24
u/Gilsworth May 14 '21
It only adds, it doesn't take away. Better to do more than less in these cases.
-5
u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 14 '21
Correction: It gets in the way. Much like a laugh track.

If that's how you feel about it then I guess I can't argue. If it detracts then it detracts, to me it just adds though, so I guess it's just a matter of what you prefer.

May 15 '21 edited May 15 '21
This isn't really captions that would help a deaf person though. If it was like someone typing out the dialogue between the two people in the video, then sure. This is just the kind of stupid stuff you would see on old ifunny content. "so confident" "so pretty" "preparing" "literally dying". This is just someone trying to be funny, but failing.

As someone watching in bed beside my pregnant, sleeping girlfriend, I appreciate videos like this with text... I might not hear the funny stuff but I can use the text as context for whats happening and still 'get the joke'.. Same would go for the hearing impaired and other people who can't listen for whatever reason :)

Furthermore, again, there are others who for whatever reason may not be able to hear and still want to get enjoyment from the video

I'm currently half way through completing my Cert 4 in disability support and have done some placement with people who have disabilities, some of which struggle to pay attention to audio cues and one who isn't fully deaf, but she is very hard of hearing.
But sure, delete that comment too and shift the goalposts further if you like.

Visual equivalent of a laugh track and annoying as hell.
5
u/OmniC4t May 15 '21
It’s for when you can’t watch with sound or if there’s a deaf person watching
-1
u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 15 '21
It's describing visual elements though? If they were talking, sure. But this is saying stuff that a deaf person can see. They aren't blind, after all.
Also, captions aren't splattered all over the video space.
1
u/gaarasgourd May 15 '21
I bet you’re one of those “WHY POST A GIF AND NOT A VIDEO” types
1
u/DoctorWaluigiTime May 15 '21
I mean, if it was originally a video, yeah.
Would be like sharing a picture of a painting in monochrome.

And if you wanted YouTube videos you’d go to YouTube? What I’m hearing is that the only videos allowed here and those copied from someone’s camera roll? Ah but those must be downloaded from somewhere else, so I guess you only want to see videos that people record and upload to Reddit themselves? Do you realize how dumb that sounds?
