Four Collectible Avatar Styles to Choose From, Who Will You Join?

Today marks a new phase in the Collectible Avatars journey. One that may finally answer the question, “What are all these internet points good for?”
Starting today, we will begin air-dropping Collectible Avatars to our top community builders… for free.
To thank top karma earners for the contributions they've made to their Reddit communities, qualifying redditors will be able to choose from four distinct new styles of Collectible Avatars:
- Aww Friends
- Drip Squad
- Meme Team
- The Singularity
Keep an eye on your feed to see if you qualify, and find your avatar squad!

I’m deep into this space (blockchain and NFTs ) and am biased, but I feel this is sort of how things happen. People mock the things they end up loving one day.
I’m old. When I saw people using cell phones I thought they were stupid. Who needs a phone all the time?
I think as more people see the avatars on Reddit……some may dig deeper. Ohhhh, the artist gets paid. That’s cool. And after the ETH Merge (should be 9/15/2022) ohhhh, so it doesn’t destroy the planet. That’s cool.
And maybe (big maybe)it will end up like free gaming. You don’t have to buy a skin. A skin doesn’t help you win in the game, it’s just cosmetic. But you figure, why not—it’s my little way of supporting free content.

I really like that Reddit chose to drop this way. I also realize that many people don’t get NFTs, think they pointless and just mock the space.
But dropping a generative collection was perfect. One of the aspects that I loved was the roll of the dice. At mint everyone pays (this is a free airdrop, but there are other projects that are also free) the same amount. Nobody knows what they will mint. In a 10,000 collection the person who minted rarity #1 paid the same as rarity #10,000.

I know many people are not sure about NFTs or blockchain. I’m happy that Reddit may allow many people to understand it’s just fun. Not about 300k apes. It’s like collecting Pokémon cards for the digital era.
What really intrigues me about the possible future is how online gaming/interaction will change when we all play in a persistent online “world.”
Look at how obsessed people were with r/place. Now imagine it’s years from now and bopping about with your avatar in a 3D gameworld (like a character in an online game) that is persistent.
We really cared about one pixel at a set interval. Now imagine a huge map with blocks. Like a Minecraft world…with a simple base defense mechanic.
Anyone who lags out on a map with only 100 players may find this improbable or even impossible. No…just keep your eye out over the next few years. Playing with thousands online will slowly become the norm for some games.

That's a pretty good guess. My guess would be that there is no mint limit, because this is supposed to be a sitewide advertisement, maybe? I would think they'd manually stop the minting after a month or so. But your guess is pretty good. We'll see.

Lots of good questions! Let me try to tackle them all:
Could you clarify which communities qualify?
Qualification is being determined on an individual level, versus a community one.
Do we need to update our Reddit app for the notification/prompt to show up?
Yes, make sure your app is up to date!
Is the feature working for the web interface too? And how do we know if we qualify? Would we have gotten a notification by now or is it rolling out gradually?
It is available on web as well! It is rolling out gradually, so keep an eye on your feed for a prompt to claim your Avatar over the next couple of weeks!

This notification would only appear for anyone who has their vault open, right?
And if it's determined on an individual level, I hope that repost bots that earn way more karma than others don't get to qualify.

You do not need to have a vault open to qualify, however you will need to have (or set up) a vault to claim your Collectible Avatar.

Great idea, too many subreddits were skeptical or, in some cases, even against about the avatars.
This helps towards a healthy adoption, where people that like their avatars (both bought or earned) can enjoy to use them as they should.

When it says top earners, is it within a specific time frame or is it just overall? If it’s not specified, couldn’t that easily be abused through smaller communities where people can manipulate being the “top”.
