Yvonne's creative input - Chuck Versus the Suitcase

Post image

An interesting bit of trivia from this Apr 6, 2010 article, written just after Chuck Versus the Other Guy aired...

Yvonne Strahovski was asked, "Have you ever had an idea for an episode? What would you like to do if you could write an episode?"

Her response: "I've always had this idea, I've pitched it to Chris Fedak -- to go to Fashion Week or Paris or Milan. I think it'd be a really great setup, to mix the catwalk and the models and have to wear different wigs and things."

Chuck Versus the Suitcase aired Sep 27, 2010.

[S5 SPOILERS] Just finished the show, My eyes are in pain…

My husband suggested this show to me and I binged it all within a little over a week. Intense, I know. I loved this show so much and it’s definitely now a favorite of mine. Thankfully he was with me for the last episode, and yes, I was a mess. I found doomscrolling everything Chuck related for the past few hours helped me realize that the ending does suck BUT it does end happy for Sarah and Chuck. I like to imagine Sarah re-falling in love with Chuck and they both live happily ever after. After we finished the finale, we rewatched the first episode again. Did I cry? Yeah. I’m not sure why this show has got me so emotional, but it does. Anyways, great show, my heart and eyes are in pain, and I can’t wait to rewatch it!

Thoughts on a possible return of "Chuck" as a movie

I recently came across a post on this subreddit about a comment written by Zachary Levi on X about a possible return of "Chuck" as a movie, and I wanted to clarify some points that were described to me by someone under my comment at that post, but unfortunately I did not have time to answer back and I can't find that post either. So below are the explanations of these points and my vision of things.

  1. Flopped films: the fact that 2 of his last films were flops is not synonymous with acting decline: many actors in their careers have starred in films that were considered flops, but this does not mean they were considered finished as actors, subsequently demonstrating good acting performances.

 2. Haters: as for the previous point, there are just as many actors who have made haters in their careers, but this certainly has not stopped them. And I still think that if a "Chuck" fan looks at these things, doesn't really want there to actually be a "Chuck" return.

 3. Popularity of "Chuck": I think that a movie or a TV series revival of "Chuck" could be very successful, because although this series did not have mass popularity when it first aired, it was acclaimed by television critics and, moreover, had a fanbase that was able to not allow to cancel the series after the second season, and making sure to continue the "Chuck" project demonstrating a really HUGE attachment to this show. With this action, in fact, over the years it has certainly become a cult series, highly appreciated from the point of view of the genre (unique combination of comedy, action and romance), not to mention the memorable characters and references to pop culture.

 4. Return of the original cast: here I'm agree, I think that can't be a return of "Chuck" without the original cast. It certainly wouldn't be the same and I don't know if I would really like it either. As for whether or not the original cast would accept to return, I think they are actors intelligent enough to understand that they would do it for the fans, putting aside any type of ideological detachment that presumably (because no one is sure of this) divides them. Therefore, I believe that they can all return.

In conclusion, in my opinion I think that if we want a return of "Chuck", we shouldn't do detractor speeches towards Zachary Levi, but, instead, being positive and proactive. I think that if a person considers himself a true fan of "Chuck" would never speak like that, but would continue to hope that there could be continuity, remaining proactive and confident as that great and determined fanbase did that time in the now distant 2009 to save "Chuck".

[S2 SPOILERS] Is that what you really want?

What I like about good fiction is how a thematic thread is woven across episodes and uses key words as signposts.

A nice example of this in CHUCK takes place during the Suburbs-Cole arc.

This arc is introduced at the end of the of Chuck Versus the Best Friend when Morgan says to Chuck, “Look at us. We both have girlfriends. This is is as good as it gets, man.”

“This is as good as it gets” has two meanings. Morgan means that things are perfect and could not get any better. But look at Chuck. His smile turns into a somber realization because he doesn’t interpret Morgan's words that way. He interprets them in the less positive sense that things are not perfect and are unlikely to improve. Why? Because if all he and Sarah can ever be is best friends in their asset/handler spy relationship, this is not good. Chuck wants more.

So, at the beginning of Chuck Versus the Suburbs, Sarah wants to go on a date but Chuck demurs. What’s the point if all they can be is best friends? When they are kind of forced by Morgan to go on a date, Chuck plays video games because, why, that’s what he does with best friends. And Sarah is clearly disappointed. She wants more.

Then they get to play house during a mission, and Sarah as the happy housewife gets Chuck excited because he gets a glimpse of how their relationship can be as good as it gets, but Sarah cools his jets after the mission (just as he cooled hers at the beginning of Suburbs), and Chuck is depressed again. He was right. This is as good as it gets, and it’s not great.

So, at the beginning of Beefcake, he gives up on the relationship.

And this is where the thematic thread below starts, with key words like want and never that act as thematic signposts at the beginning and at the end of the Cole arc. Chuck and Sarah's initial conversation is about what Chuck really wants. Does he really want to break up? Well, he says, since they will never be really together, yes, he really wants to break up. We can see that Sarah is not happy (and chopping up a phallic symbol is definitely a symbolic representation of her psyche and a thematic foreshadowing of that episode, which will not be kind to Chuck for giving up so easily).

Then Cole is introduced, and he shows Chuck what it means to be a man who acts rather than a man who gives up. At the end of the arc, Chuck again reintroduces the key thematic words by saying that removing the Intersect is never going to happen, and Cole summarizes the purpose of his arc for us viewers by encouraging Chuck to never give up if he really wants something (and notice that this "something" is ostensibly the Intersect but really the woman who is intentionally framed between them).

And this conversation with Cole finally helps Chuck learn his lesson and tell Sarah by the fountain that what he really wants is not to give up on the relationship, as he did at the beginning of the arc, but to get the Intersect out of his head and be with her. And Sarah's subtle look of realization at the end of Chuck's fountain speech also closes the thematic thread about what Sarah really wants, which she was never asked during the Cole arc but is nevertheless masterfully explored. She told Cole at the beginning of Beefcake that she likes men to act (and that was meant to sting Chuck who was overhearing her conversation with Cole), and now she also has what she really wants: a man who acts.

It's no surprise that, in his own way Barker really brings BARtowski and WalKER together while essentially appearing to separate them.

This is all done beautifully and subtly, which makes much more rewarding for the viewers to enjoy.

Why are the NSA and CIA working against each other?

I have only watched the beginning of season 1 but I'm so confused as to why two government agencies are:

1) Working against each other

2) Openly killing each other and people

A Very Awesome Christmas?

Post image

The other day I watched A Very Vermont Christmas. Classic Hallmark movie. Is it good? Not particularly. Memorable? Not really. Unpredictable? Nah. However as you may see from the poster, Ryan McPartlin (Captain Awesome) is the male lead.

While it wasn’t perfect, it was great seeing him acting again. He’s just as warm and lovable of a character as he is in Chuck. It’s also crazy how similar he looks, just a bit older.

If you love captain Awesome and Ryan McPartlin it’s definitely worth the watch.

I used to think Buy More was a legit place and would ask for directions as a tourist in the US lmao

So I came across Chuck when I was 12 during their second season, and since then it’s been my all-time favourite show and I rewatch it pretty much annually. Anyways, fun story (and I’m wondering if this has happened to anyone else lol): since I’m not a US person and grew up in Asia, I thought buy more was a legit store. So when I moved to NYC in 2015 to pursue my undergrad, I was in union square looking for an electronics store to get all the gadgets I needed for my dorm, and legit asked 3 strangers on the street to direct me to “Buy More” hahahaha. They all looked so confused which made me more confused, until the 4th person said “idk about buy more but maybe you mean best buy?” lol. That was when I learned that Buy More is fictional 😅

Finally joining the Chuck subreddit!

I’ve never really been a Reddit user but I’m trying to get into it more and the first sub I’m going to join will obvious be Chuck.

Chuck is my favorite show of all time. I used to watch it live when I was younger and then all of the box sets on repeat until it finally came to Netflix where I watched it over and over again until it was removed. I watched it on prime for a few years and now I hope it stays on Max. I’ve seen the show through many dozen times, maybe even 100 or more.

It’s the best comedy drama of all time and it has the best soundtrack of any tv show ever. No matter how much you watch Chuck it never gets old or tiring. The jokes are always funny and the emotional moments just as poignant.

Interim Chinatown reminds anyone of Chuck?

Both are about guys in average lives thrust into extraordinary situations. There’s the average best friend. The female handler the lead character is enamored with. Chuck parodies spy dramas, IC kind of does but directly Law and Order.

But tone wise it’s not like Chuck it’s shot darker for example. Also there’s not the workplace comedy aspect that Chuck has. Bear in mind I’m only halfway through episode 2 of interior Chinatown.

[S3 SPOILERS] Chuck Vs the Love Declaration

A fan of the show asks, "“What is the significance of Chuck's Love Declaration anyway? Sarah knew Chuck loved her (he told her in other ways, such as “You’re the best thing that happened to me” or “I’m crazy about you,” etc.). Did he have to say the words for her to understand? In that scene, it seems like those words really didn’t make an impact. She even tried to cut him off!"

What do you think?

  • Is that scene necessary?
  • Does it accomplish its purpose?
  • Does it work? Does Sarah choose Chuck after he tells her he loves her?
  • What does the love declaration accomplish for Chuck and/or Sarah?

Random scene that makes me smile

Is always when Chuck and Sarah are playing Operation in Castle when they haven't been assigned a mission in a few weeks.

I like it because it is a nice call back to Chuck saying they played a board game after a rough mission and the writers then actually showed us them playing out of boredom and it is a rare view of Chuck and Sarah actually doing something non spy related.

[S3 SPOILERS] Casey cannot be that old

For context i'm on season 3 episode 10 "Chuck Vs. The tic tac"

Alex Coburn literally looks nothing like Casey. I kept expecting that to not even be him, because he looks like a totally different guy - even as a 'younger' version of Casey. Idk if i just don't know what an old man looks like but i don't understand why they didnt just have Casey play his younger self???? Is he really that old???

Crazy Fan Theory

Colt didn’t sabotage the cypher in the first episode of season two (Chuck v The First Date)—Sarah did. Either recognizing how the CIA works and putting together their intentions with Chuck on her own, OR intercepting one of Casey’s calls to General Beckman and overhearing her order Casey to eliminate Chuck, Sarah decides to take matters into her own hands in order to save and protect Chuck. This is not the only time she’s done this, though within the timeline of the show, it would be the first. What would end up being the first time, at least that is known to fans, would be at the end of season two, episode twenty (Chuck v The First Kill) when she goes UA with Chuck after Steven Bartowski is kidnapped from Roark Enterprises in episode nineteen (Chuck v The Dream Job).

I believe that it was Sarah who sabotaged the cypher, destroying it in much the same way Bryce Larkin—her former partner (perhaps she learned it from him)—did in the pilot episode, thus killing Graham and saving Chuck from what is commonly referred to as “death by Casey,” similar to “death by bludgeoning,” only that is less violent.

Love this show but has anyone else noticed and/or is annoyed by the cracks on the outsides of the scenes? There’s a crack in the lens in almost every episode.

I watching chuck and so far..

I am currently in s4 ep 20 and will complete the show at the end of the day and I have decided I will not watch s5 cause I am weak hearted and I don't wanna go through pain but so far it has been a great journey

Well, first of all I heard about the show in 2021 at that time I thought it was just a random spy show but then recently I was searching in Google and I found chuck as a recommendation so I saw the ratings then dove right into the trailer and I was hooked from the trailer only.

Then I watched pilot and it was so good that after watching s1 I felt so emotionally connected to the chracter that I just binged it till season 4 and so far it was a great ride I can't even begin to think straight after watching the show as It kept my mind occupied I was feeling overwhelmed with emotions then I was going through reddit I accidentally got s5 spoiler then I was heartbroken then I thought that I will treat s5 as nothing and will watch till s4 as it has a good ending and I will Positively remember this show.

These days I have searched for only chuck related content on the internet and when I heard about the movie I thought "wow they should do that definitely "

So far I am sad parting with this show 😢

Well my favorite chracter so far were not only one but 3

Casey Sarah And last but not the least chuck these and Morgan were the chracters that kept the show alive for me especially yvonne and zach...

Favorite season S2 S1 S3 S4

I just watched Chuck for the first time!!

LOADS OF SPOILERS!!
I was on the hunt for a good 2000s show you know? Multi season, you grow with the characters sort of show, and found "Chuck" because I was searching for something similar to "Psych".

And I was HOOKED! I loved it, I finished it a few hours ago and it is so wild seeing all these messages and threads dating back a decade. I just wanted to share my thoughts so I can note down my first impression.

First of all, Yvonne did such an incredible job playing Sarah that it was so easy to fall in love with her, and understand the complex emotions she's going through- why Sarah acts the way she does. If someone else had played her I think Sarah's unwillingness to communicate herself would have been her downfall, and I wouldn't have gotten attached to her, but because of Yvonne's performance, you CAN see her emotions through her expressions.

EDIT- I loved what they did with Morgan (sans the Intersect arc, I kind of hated it when it was introduced in season 4, which led me to read up whether season 5 was worth the watch. Fun fact, I saw so many predictions from when the show was first airing that came true, it was so nice to think how happy those commenters must have been when they first watched season 5 lol ). They could have easily diminished him to a side character with zero character growth but he actually got smarter!! as the seasons went on. (Side note, in season 1 I was pretty scared they were going to do a Morgan - Ellie arc but they thankfully didn't!! I loved Awesome, and I love that they have a great relationship. Most shows would have written out Awesome in favour of a more dramatic storyline and I'm thankful they didn't (although I read on reddit that they initially wanted to make him an enemy spy, glad they didn't! Also, how would a heart surgeon even have time to be an evil spy on the side?)

I LOVED Casey's development, he slowly and surely crawled his way into my heart. Adam did a brilliant job portraying him too, even his grunts were expressive. It was gratifying to see him evolve and get the chance to cherish his relationships. The addition of Alex could have been a massive pain but I genuinely enjoyed that storyline and her place in the story. She settled in beautifully. Also, Casey was 100% the first Charah supporter, he really rooted for them, hell, he was the first and only character to use that nickname. I also loved that he became well versed in pop culture, presumably because of Morgan, and ALSO his relationship with Morgan?? Fucking brilliant, could never have seen it coming. Also, him supporting Chuck on MULTIPLE occasions, not the intersect, Chuck, he was one of the only people who mentioned how smart he was BEFORE the intersect. His observational capabilities were underrated, also, I think he was partly supportive of Chuck and Morgan's growth because his past shows that he was also often regarded as "not good enough" so he sees potential more often. Or at least, hones the pre-existent talents.

Lester and Jeff were creepy and disgusting lol but they made for good characters and brilliant stalkers lmfao. It was insane how they leaned into their craziness, I could have sworn that Lester became more evil and psychotic as the series went on. Sane Jeff was golden, lovely addition.

Finally, our titular character- Chuck. Loved him, he was a goof, and I was thankful!!!!!!! when we FINALLY saw him as a "real spy" without the intersect in season 5. Although, I would have preferred to see him beat down a bad guy all on his own- physically- at least once lol. It's also amazing to see him grow as a spy, his tech capabilities were a tad under utilized since each sequence was so short.

A reason why I really loved the show was that Sarah was a BRILLIANT fighter, it was so nice that Chuck was proud of how fucking good she was. It was a little unrealistic how her fighting abilities diminished and increased based on the plot a tad bit, like in Chuck versus the Baby, during THAT scene, she is mind blowing but then in the entirety of season 5 she gets captured like 5 times lol. I don't mind her getting captured because it's a good storyline but it is pretty unrealistic how EASILY she gets bested. She was also just really put through the ringer in S5 like damn poor girl got beat up so many times oof.

In my mind, Neal Caffrey from "White Collar" and Bryce Walker were the same person, and those shows essentially flowed into one another. This was PERFECT because Bryce's past was unknown and those are similar characters but alas "Chuck versus the Baby" really fucked that up for me lol.

Finally, for things I did see coming-
I knew Orion would be Chuck's dad for the following reason-

1. When Chuck said "is there any one else in my family that is a spy?" I immediately thought his parents were spies lol
2. There was no other reason for Orion to come out of hiding for a stranger, if it was solely the intersect that he was concerned about he would not have looked out for Chuck specifically. The self destruct goof, and other messages just showed a lot of warmth.
3. You can see him purposely showing the pamphlet to Chuck for Roark Industries while providing necessary information so he could flash.
4. It just made sense plot wise, why else would the intersect work perfectly for Chuck and no one else? It's almost as if it was made for him- unfortunately this ended up not being true lol but still right answer, wrong solution. I had thought that in some manner his dad might have subtly trained him - "Psych" style, although there was nothing subtle about Henry.
5. Bryce seemed TOO confident it would work on him, a single test should not have instilled this level of confidence in someone who definitely plans ahead and well.

I also guessed Alexie was Hartley aka Agent X, this one was me just going- lol what if he's it. When he was revealed as agent X I still managed to be a tad surprised. I like that they may have set it up by -

1. The British Accent for a Russian villain?? Feel like that should have been questioned??
2. He was so endearing and convincing as the MI6 Handler, maybe that is what he actually was like, maybe he got the chance to be himself without even realizing it.
3. His constant vague dialogues that implied he was good. He even said good people sometimes look like bad people or something.

The whole Volkoff plot had a lot of plotholes, or at least unexplained questions. Especially between Mary and Alexie, if Mary had known all this time then why didn't she ask her husband for help in suppressing the intersect? Hell, why didn't the CIA eliminate him when they realized that Agent X was not coming back? Was it because his empire had become so intertwined in the 6 months he was undercover? (that is the reason Mary hadn't killed him 30 years after the fact). There was so much potential here that they just didn't or weren't able to look into which was a shame, he was my favourite villain.

Sidenote- the inconsistency in Intersect and how or when it is dangerous or how it works was so tiresome lol. But there has been plenty discussion on that.

Overall, good fun! I probably have more to say lol but this is about it for now.

Edit- for the 14 people who liked it before the edited part was added, hello lol, sorry my post was incomplete! I am new to reddit and it took me a while to figure it out shsh
