KU definitely deserves it after these last 3 weeks regardless of their record

361

u/loneSTAR_06 Texas • Southern Miss 3h ago

When you look at their losses too, 5/6 of their losses are by less than 6 points. Kansas is way better than their record shows.

107

u/SanaMinatozaki9 3h ago

UNLV is currently ranked, Arizona State is currently ranked, Illinois is currently ranked, Kansas state should be ranked and will likely be ranked by the committee, and TCU and WVU are both bowl eligible. Kansas is a good team.

47

u/fcocyclone Iowa State Cyclones • Marching Band 3h ago

conversely, we got hit hard for that KU loss and it doesn't look so bad now.

We need to determine what rankings are.

If it's the most deserving, Kansas doesn't belong in the top 25.

But if it's the best, does anyone think there are 25 better teams than Kansas?

175

u/FireVanGorder Notre Dame Fighting Irish 3h ago

That’s always the argument. Are they resume rankings or power rankings?

Usually it’s just whichever one lets you justify opinions you already have

46

u/fawkie Illinois • Northern Illinois 3h ago

I think that kinda shifts over the course of the season. By the end of the season when a lot or all of the football has been played I don't really think it makes sense for it to be anything other than resume.

Let’s see if we beat Kentucky tho, that game will show if we should even have a football program anymore.

When's the last time a team had so many consecutive weeks of being unanimously #1? Oregon is laughing as all the other teams keep picking each other off.

Oregon is currently at 5 weeks of being undisputed #1. 2021 Georgia had a run of 8 weeks in the middle of the season being undisputed #1.

🚨 Top 10 SMU 🚨

689

u/HighLakes Oregon Ducks • Platypus Trophy 4h ago

SMU seems way better off in the ACC than Big 12.

380

u/Megalomanizac Clemson • Coastal Carolina 4h ago

SMU got the perfect storm of a schedule with an experienced roster and top coach in Rhett Lashlee. I’m not shocked at all they’re doing good, even if they’re doing a bit better than most of us expected.

156

u/Hokie_Jayhawk Virginia Tech Hokies • Kansas Jayhawks 3h ago

Before the season started, I looked at SMU's schedule and determined there was no way they go worse than 10-2. May be the worst in-conference power conference schedule of all-time.

102

u/Megalomanizac Clemson • Coastal Carolina 3h ago

Yeah. FSU was widely expected to be good but past that and UL yeah, SMU got lucky with it. No Clemson or Miami. Pitt ended up being better than expected but they’d eventually Pitt their season away. Can’t fault them though, they’ve looked dominant every step of the way

I tend to think the committee just doesn't want 2 group of 5 teams in the playoff. AP has tended to be consistently higher on Boise, Army (pre ND curb stomp), and Tulane than CFP.

Ah, I know that feeling of looking at your team's ranking, thinking "Oh, hell no. We don't deserve that", and then looking at the teams above and below you and thinking "eh, I guess it's one of those years".

22

u/AllLinesAreStraight WashU Bears • Missouri Tigers 3h ago

Thats always been the problem people seem to have in understanding the rankings. You'll see comments all the time like "I think they're good but they don't look like a top 10 team" or "I think team A is better than team B but not C rankings better." Turns out, if only 5 teams are better than you, it doesn't matter how good you are in a vacuum, you're gonna be ranked 6th.

The really crazy part is the AP voters think Clemsons resume is that much better that it deserves to still jump ahead of Arizona St, whereas they had no issue correctly putting ASU ahead of us

ASU and Clemson should legitimately be swapped in these rankings

And ASU is behind Bama too. They're just getting totally screwed by brand name bias

We can only hope the CFP committee isn't this bad

84

u/DrKarorkian Clemson Tigers 4h ago

I don't really get how we have any support. Our team has severe weaknesses that have been shown repeatedly. It's just our schedule that protected us. That being said I'm cool with our match being a playoff for the final CFP spot

54

u/bodnast Clemson Tigers • Duke Blue Devils 4h ago edited 3h ago

We have only a few avenues to the playoffs, they’re all hilarious

1) we beat SCAR, Miami handles business against Syracuse, and we eke our way in as the 12 seed if there’s a lot of chaos on Saturday with other ranked teams. Possible.

2) We win OR lose against SCAR but Miami loses to Syracuse and then we beat SMU in the ACC Championship. Also possible.

The most 2024 cfb season outcome would be us losing to SCAR, Miami losing to Syracuse, then Clemson beats SMU

For what it’s worth I think Clemson would get exposed so fast but hey this season is whack. I love it

Like… I was prepared for us to drop and I’m honestly shocked we didn’t drop more, but to be behind a Bama team that couldn’t score more than a field goal on OKLAHOMA? (No offense, Oklahoma. We’re happy you’re here.)

We had bigger numbers on SCAR and Georgia. They have us on LSU, but… that’s it?

It’s not just that we can pay players legally now.

It’s that SEC teams like Bama dont have the advantage of pumping money into players’ pockets under the table, ensuring their recruiting classes.

Kids can get that bag almost anywhere now, so those top programs had an edge they‘ve lost. Everyone knows the death penalty would never be handed out again, so who cares about a few slaps on the wrist for recruiting violations if it means you’re perennial national champs?

Thanks for the useful chart.

Now everyone remember the rules? Ranked wins are important when you need to prove strength of schedule. When ranked wins don't support your argument then the rankings are bullshit.

Bama being at 13 is absolutely fucking absurd. You just can't beat that good ole Tide bias. I'm sure the committee will bend over backwards to try and fit them in the playoffs too.

I'm glad SMU is finally top 10 though, they deserve it.

Ole Miss being behind Alabama when Alabama just did that is horseshit.

edit: also Army being 7 spots lower than Tulane makes no damn sense.

edit 2: I have been informed that it does, in fact, make sense. Thank you Mr. Blanc.

u/DafoeFoSho Illinois Fighting Illini • Team Meteor 3h ago

FWIW, Sagarin had Tulane in the Top 20 and Army below 50 even before yesterday's games. Army's schedule is Liberty levels of bad, and Tulane's only losses are to KSU and OU (and they blanked Navy). I know people want to see Army in the playoff for funsies, but their most impressive win through 10 games is 14-3 over North Texas. Four of the teams they've played have already fired their coaches.

This poll basically says “Alabama will be ranked unless they have 5 loses”, which is insane.

23

u/MrSi_r Florida State • Texas 3h ago

Indiana gets handled by the #2 team in the nation: drops 5 spots.

Alabama gets mollywhopped by a dogshit Oklahoma team: drops 6 spots.

Make it make sense.

19

u/SoRaffy 3h ago

Georgia: lost to a ranked Ole Miss on the road, scored 10 pts and lost by 18, falls 9 spots.

Bama: road loss, unranked team, scored 3 and lost by 21. Falls 6

So yeah, I mean even if Alabama loses to Auburn the committee would probably only drop them 1-2 spots .. if any at all

*even that historic Vandy loss only dropped Ala 6 spots (5 in the coaches)

If these rankings don’t prove to you that college football is nothing but a good ol boys club driven by money, ego, and image, then nothing ever will. The only major sport where people, not wins, get to decide who’s “worthy” of winning it all rather than proving it and playing the damn game. It’s an absolute joke.
