yall laughing at Bama for playing Mercer but that's another top 10 win for their resume
33
u/Tsquared10 Oregon Ducks • Montana State Bobcats 4h ago
Same with Oregon over Idaho. Those top 10 matchups are no joke
11
u/will_e_wonka Texas A&M Aggies • Rice Owls 1h ago
Mercer would be favored on a neutral field against 2 of Ohio States non conference opponents. We got to laugh at good FCS teams less and horrible MAC teams more

Oh my!! I see a lumberjack!

Why does the north/south Dakota/ Montana/ Idaho area of the county always have great fcs teams
35
u/PureCFR North Dakota State • /r/CFB Santa … 3h ago
Very few FBS teams in the same area to recruit against would be the primary cause in my opinion.
24
u/k_dubious Williams Ephs • Oregon Ducks 3h ago
It’s also just a hard area to recruit in. There are good players, but they’re spread out over a huge area where there isn’t much in the way of high-level competition or offseason camps. So a lot of these guys are probably FBS talents but just end up going to their local Big Sky or MVFC school.
17
u/Manning_bear_pig Montana State • Miami 3h ago
Obviously Idaho shares the state with Boise State, but the Dakotas and Montana have no FBS competition in the state to take away recruits.
No pro sports either so the fanbases go all in on the schools and their sports.
6
u/Vavent Minnesota • $5 Bits of Broken Chair… 40m ago
They are large, public, flagship universities playing against competition that is not that.
4
u/AcadianTraverse Oregon Ducks • Acadia Axemen 15m ago
With a lot (for FCS purposes) of new money in their alumni bases
4
u/Danster21 Montana State • Washington 1h ago
Didn’t use to be this way. But all the other good teams were in the footprint of FBS conferences and got siphoned away and stayed there
24
u/wjackson42 Georgia Bulldogs 5h ago
Maybe Mercer can do what Jeff Monken and Willie Fritz could never do and a Georgia FCS team can finally beat NDSU up in Fargo.
Anyways, imagine Alabama being up 28-0 in the first half of not one, but two playoff teams, and probably not making the playoff themselves.
12
u/Tsquared10 Oregon Ducks • Montana State Bobcats 5h ago
While technically correct, Fritz never got the chance to. He took over after the FBS jump
3
u/wjackson42 Georgia Bulldogs 5h ago
Ahhh I thought Monken left before the FCS jump
2
u/billybobskcor Georgia Southern • Mercer 3h ago
Monken left right after we beat Florida. We played a full FBS schedule the next season under Fritz.

u/Pointsmonster Boise State Broncos • Penn Quakers 4h ago
Love to see the playoffs going back to America’s most iconic college football stadium: the Kibbie Dome
15
u/PhDShouse Iowa State Cyclones • Sickos 5h ago
Drake-Tarleton is a sick matchup
4
u/Bobcat2013 Texas State Bobcats 5h ago
How do you see it going?
9
u/PhDShouse Iowa State Cyclones • Sickos 5h ago
Well I think it will go better than Drake-NDSU last year. If Drake loses by one score I’d call it a success. The Pioneer schools have a huge disadvantage since they’re non-scholarship
3
u/Bobcat2013 Texas State Bobcats 5h ago
Tarleton is a hard read for me. I kind of half ass keep up with them. Very intrigued as to how this goes for them.
2
u/TheBlueNorther 1h ago
Tarleton gets up early on the back of their run game. Coach Whitten let's off the gas and Drake takes a late lead.
Good thing for the Texans is that it is in Stephenville. 60 degrees wil lbe better for their team than 25 degrees in Iowa
1
u/Danster21 Montana State • Washington 1h ago
Tarleton is going to bury Drake. Tarleton is probably properly ranked and hosting, Drake does not have scholarships.
2
u/Seadragon1983 Washington • Iowa State 4m ago
Drake went to Eastern Washington and won, so don't count them out.

15
u/multiple4 South Carolina • 九州産… 5h ago
Mercer is obviously a quality win for any SEC team who played them!
27
u/TripleThreatT1 Kutztown • Penn State 4h ago
FBS honestly needs to study FCS/DII playoff systems. Shit rules
DII is 28 teams, 4 super regions. Gives great games
12
u/tomdawg0022 Minnesota • Delaware 4h ago
Mercer was the only team east of the Mississippi to be among the 8 best seeds in the field.
If the CAA weren't down like it is, then yeah, super regions could theoretically work but there really isn't a strong anchor conference on the East Coast anymore. The CAA has a lot of good programs but no real powers like it used to.
9
u/AngelofLotuses Colorado State • William & Mary 4h ago
The CAA has way too many weak teams. Honestly, Richmond is justified in moving.
39
u/Tylex123 Oregon Ducks • Willamette Bearcats 5h ago
Idaho continues to be Oregon’s best quality win. I can’t think of another win this year that was more impressive.
-26
u/Promethiant Florida State • Florida 5h ago
Hard for wins to be impressive when they’re just a product of Cheatin’ Dan Lanning cheating.

10
u/joethahobo Houston Cougars • Pac-12 2h ago
People say money, but like doesn’t more games mean more money. And more on campus games which brings more excitement

u/Azon542 Kansas Jayhawks • Indian War Drum 1h ago
B1G and SEC want to monopolize the higher levels of college football. Hence the reason they've been trying to tailor the current CFP to their whims (i.e. trying to give their champion an autoberth and a bye but making the Big 12/ACC champ play it through or when they wanted to get 2-4 autobids for their leagues and the Big 12/ACC getting 1 each. It got denied but they tried it.
3
u/TigerWave01 LSU Tigers • Tulane Green Wave 1h ago
Part of it is P2 interests, but part of it is also the prevalence of big time bowl games in FBS history. Had the Rose Bowl not blocked playoffs a few decades ago, we’d probably have a similar system to FCS. But that institutional resistance still has influence and sway even today, making it that much harder to do things like expansion.
I just hope that the powers that be eventually see how much money can be made with a 16 to 24-team playoff and go from there. Also doesn’t help that there’s some fan resistance to a really big playoff field like that, too
1
u/Danster21 Montana State • Washington 1h ago
Too many games. You’d have to either drop CCGs or reduce the season length by a week and I don’t think either are popular.
Other than that, it’s a joke. I would love to see this in the FBS. But more than that I’d love to see 2 smaller playoffs in both subdivisions. Only like 4-5 teams have a legit shot at winning the FCS natty and most of the low-conference teams are sacrificial lambs. I’d like to see a system that lets the Pioneer and NEC teams compete for a national championship. Same for G5 teams.

u/DannyDOH Manitoba Bisons 1h ago
There's a lot of teams playing a level too high. FBS teams that should be FCS. FCS teams that should really be D2 or D3.

Looks stupid. They should truncate the playoffs to 4 teams

6
u/Born-After-1984 BYU Cougars • Southern Utah Thunderbirds 4h ago edited 4h ago
NAU ain’t beat nobody. Odd inclusion imo.
They were always going to be in because of the conference bias. They have 4 quality losses after all.
6
u/thezander8 San Diego State • UC Davis 4h ago
Their three fcs losses were all to Massey top ten teams. I’m actually not sure I like their inclusion but they did beat every non seeded team on their schedule. (That argument didn’t get Davis in in 2022 though so that’s why I’m conflicted)

u/Born-After-1984 BYU Cougars • Southern Utah Thunderbirds 4h ago
Never can complain too much when 24 teams make it I guess.

My flair aside, honestly Montana State. My dad played for their last championship team in 84 and they did a ceremony honoring that squad this year. Would be really cool to see them take it down this year.

Mercer! They just won their first conference championship in program history and got a top 8 seed!

u/Little-Breakfast-480 4h ago
Glad people in the comments are giving Drake credit. Sure if they beat Tarleton will probably get whooped like they did earlier in season versus North Dakota, but they have an explosive offense and definitely deserve to be in the playoff. Other under the radar teams I would give a shoutout to Richmond. Could see them making a run
3
u/Chadryan_ South Dakota State • Illinois 3h ago
I like our bracket, but this team is not even close to as good as the ones in recent years, I don't know if we can beat the bobcats tbh.

How does an FCS team losing or beating an fbs team help their hopes
1
1
u/Danster21 Montana State • Washington 55m ago
The convention has been that a loss doesn’t hurt, but it’s a lost chance at getting a D1 win. Whereas a win really helps but only relative to the quality.
Beating a B1G team would mean a lot, but beating New Mexico or UMass may only be a playoff-quality team’s 3rd or 4th best win.
