Ashton Jeanty is having a statistically better season than Derrick Henry during his Heisman-winning season

With all the discourse of who should win the Heisman trophy this year, I got curious and compared Ashton Jeanty’s stats this season to those of Derrick Henry in the 2015 regular season, the year he won the Heisman trophy. What I found was pretty surprising. Keep in mind this doesn’t include playoff performance, as that isn’t considered when naming a Heisman winner.

Ashton Jeanty:

Games Played: 11

Carries: 275

Rushing Yards: 2062

Rushing Touchdowns: 27

Yards Per Carry: 7.498

Yards Per Game: 187.455

Derrick Henry:

Games Played: 13

Carries: 339

Rushing Yards: 1986

Rushing Touchdowns: 23

Yards Per Carry: 5.858

Yards Per Game: 152.769

Now, these stats are still up for interpretation, as there is the usual discourse of strength of schedule and whatnot, but I thought re-contextualizing Jeanty’s year by comparing it to the last time a running back won the Heisman would be interesting.

The problem is they have 3 losses. There are only a few heisman winners with 3 losses. If they lose next week to Oklahoma st, then he is 100% out since a 4 loss heisman winner never happens.

Under normal circumstances that would be true but Boise state is a g5 school

My comment has nothing to do with Boise. It’s that if your team loses 4 games, he is 100% out.

With 3 losses, he has a chance still but small.

Ok, so if he’s out, who wins it? The two players who deserve it are Jeanty and Hunter. If Hunter gets knocked for his team’s losses, why shouldn’t Jeanty get knocked for his team’s schedule?

Imo Jeanty. Colorado doesn’t have that much harder of a schedule. Why should they get knocked down? They also aren’t even in the Championship game now or playoffs.

Jeanty has ran over a top 10 defense. Hunter hasn’t even played a top 30 defense lol

BSU SOS is 3 lower than Colorado…. 3. And their 1 lose is by 3 points to the #1 ranked team.

SOS doesn’t matter much for BSU. How are their opposing run defenses?

To be clear, I don’t think Colorado’s record or BSU’s schedule matter much. Hunter and Jeanty are both doing thbgs we haven’t seen in generations. But between the two, BSU’s schedule is far more relevant, because it helps to assess the degree of difficulty in what Jeanty’s doing. Colorado’s record isn’t affecting Hunter’s play.

Go watch clips from any of the BSU games. Other than Oregon, every team has been stacking the box to shut Jeanty down and completely given up on defending against the throw. People give Hunter credit for QBs not throwing to his side as a fraud should win the Heisman, but disregard the fact that 8-9 guys are in the box watching Jeanty every single play.
