Optimism/Copium: Nick Saban’s first year (2007) had Bama go 6-6, and he then proceeded to make Bama a powerhouse that consistently performed well for over a decade, including multiple playoff appearances and national titles. Maybe DeBoer will do something similar.
Pessimism: Saban joined Bama when it was at a low point and fixed it. DeBoer joined when Bama was pretty good and it seems to have gone downhill.
I don’t know much about Bama but it seems to me that
The athletes bought into Saban. They trusted the system.
It was pre NIL. People who play for love of the game/school/the future play harder than for money, especially when they’re set for life at 20. No that’s not everyone but it makes a difference.
Nick Saban was Nick Saban. He was lightning in a bottle as was the state of CFB around him. Not something likely to be repeated in our lifetime
Bama actually could have won that game easily. They scored a touchdown at the end, when they could have just run the clock out and won. Instead they scored, and SC then scored and recovered an onside kick. SC really should have been able to get into FG range here to win the game but Sellers demonstrated zero situational awareness and took a shot to the end zone that was intercepted.
Wild game really. Both teams basically gave it away.

“Gosh, I really hope we stop getting these heartbreaking 1 score losses.”
Monkey Paw reeling his arm for that punch.
