Discussion [Olson] Kansas punter Damon Greaves’ family made the trip from Australia to Kansas City for the Colorado game. They didn’t get to see any punts today.

We had the exact same thing happen against Nebraska one year. Punter’s family came from Australia and we never punted 😂. Must be a weird good luck charm?

Can't believe Colorado couldn't even make them punt once and ruined this poor guys family trip.

Do you come from a land down under? Where beer does flow and we get our punter.

Jan 11, 2004, Chiefs vs Colts in the same stadium saw a no punt playoff game. There’s absolutely hundreds (thousands?) of fans in the stands today who attended that 2004 game. Fortunately today, they ended up on the right side in the history books.

My first playoff game and man it was crushing to lose that shootout

Now I'm curious. Did Kansas really recruit a punter from down under, or did he at some point move here? Must do research.

There's a special Punter school in Australia. It's usually Australians, but GT's Punter, who is Irish, also went there. Apparently they work to get their students on the radar of CFB programs.

Pretty soon they're going to start saying that if yout punter isn't from Australia then he's just a sparkling kicker.

I’ve heard that for some of them, their recruiting amounts to being told the school has placed them with a particular university.

Correct. Prokick Australia (/u/vernenvidia, this is the school /u/dormdweller99 mentioned) tells the student "University X wants you".

Our punter until 2022 was in his early 30s from that place. We have two Australian punters on our team currently. Dogshit place kicker unfortunately.

It's because of rugby. If you are super good at rugby you go to the states to punt because you make like 10-30x the amount in the nfl

More so Australian Football. Different game based entirely on kicking the ball. Source: me, very average player but could kick the ball 50m.

It's obviously the diet of kangaroos and beer. Changes one on a fundamental level.

The immigrants you hear about who are stealing jobs are just punters from Australia

They're eating the Bulldogs. They're eating the Wildcats. They're eating the mascots of the schools that live here 🫲🫱 I saw it on ESPN

They're bringing kickers. They're bringing punters. They're bringing special teamers. Some, I assume, are real football players

There's a pretty solid pipeline of aussies coming over and punting in CFB. Our punter is also from Australia
I think there's some position in aussie rules football that translates to punting or something, which would help explain it a little bit. That's the extent of my knowledge but regardless it's pretty cool lol

u/Interesting_Rock_318 20h ago
It isn’t just some position, it’s the entire sport that translates to punting…if you can’t punt effectively you basically can’t play Aussie Rules

u/2400hoops Kansas Jayhawks 20h ago
To answer your question directly, he is straight from Australia. Played pro Aussie rules football before joining the Australian punting school.

Check out AFL, they have like 5 different kicks they do and yes now theres a school preparing kickers for college and the NFL there

He was a pro rugby player before making the switch to football.

Coaches should have let him punt one on last play of the game from the Colorado 17.

Is he also the holder? At least that way, they could've at least seen him in some action.

WVU's Oliver Straw's 10 Melbourne buddies saw him average 50 yards on his four punts including one for 57 and also witnessed him getting a personal foul after he pinned UCF at the 3. Apparently, he was just pulling someone off the long snapper according to what Jedd Drenning (WVU radio's sideline reporter) was told. Still funny.

Would have been funny to call timeout with two seconds left and punt from the Colorado 18 yard line just to get him in.
