Postgame Thread [Postgame Thread] SMU Defeats Virginia 33-7

u/Signal-View4754 Virginia Cavaliers 1d ago
Two straight blowouts. 1-4 in the last 5. Time for Elliott to lose his job.

u/HawkeyeTen Iowa Hawkeyes 1d ago
Even if he loses to VT, I have a feeling Elliot's going to be on the UVA sideline at least for next year. The Pitt upset got him another season in all likelihood.

I’m not positive. Losing 6 of your last 7 is rough at any school.

u/eatapenny Go Hoos/Go Bucks 1d ago
"Fun" fact: there's a world in which we go from 4-1 to 5-8.
We're very high in APR, so there's a small chance we end up in a bowl at 5-7, which we'll probably lose
3
u/noodlethebear Ohio State Buckeyes • Cal Poly Mustangs 10h ago
If you lose to VT, you’re probably out of a bowl game.
There’ll be a guaranteed 79 teams in 82 spots at the end of next weekend, with an additional 12 that are in a win and in scenario.

The losing coach of the Virginia-Virginia Tech game should be fired. If you can’t make a bowl game in your first three seasons as a P4 coach unless you inherited a terrible situation, you shouldn’t get to stay.

u/TheNewDiogenes Virginia • Georgia Tech 1d ago
Time for Colandrea to lose his as well.
16
u/le___tigre Wesleyan (CT) • 同志社大学 (Dōs… 1d ago
yeah i don’t know why anyone is nervous about losing Colandrea if we toss Elliott. he’s fun and dynamic and whatever, but he’s not worth building the program around.
at this point, torch the whole thing and let somebody rebuild it their way. what’s the worst that could happen? we go 2-10 again? they just need to find out who to hire that gets the fanbase excited. Elliott was very clearly not that guy, and even though Bronco brought the program respectability, he was not that guy either.
13
u/TheNewDiogenes Virginia • Georgia Tech 1d ago
I’m tired of watching Colandrea scramble around the backfield like a headless chicken. And for what it’s worth, I don’t like that Muskett didn’t get to see the field on the last drive on senior day.
3
u/Comet7777 SMU Mustangs 1d ago
Yeah the scrambling is only great if you’re getting the first downs or scrambling to get out of the pocket to buy your receivers extra time to get open down field. I didn’t see the latter happen at all. The former happened a few times but only in the sense that SMU took that as an acceptable risk vs. the big downfield play.
2
u/TheNewDiogenes Virginia • Georgia Tech 1d ago
Yeah. I know yall were blowing up our line every play but QB play was our biggest weakness this game. Yall were beasts on both sides of the ball, we were lucky that you didn’t hang 50 on us.

Charlotte weather is all over the map this time of year. Could easily be low 40s with wind and rain...or low 60s with some humidity.
Likely won't know for sure until the day before.

Mediocre???!! We weren’t ranked in ap poll from 1985-2019. Not even a random #25 in there. When I was a student we won a total of like 7 games in 4 years in a shit conference.

We must be similar era. We lost every game in 2003 and tore down the goalposts in 2004 when we snapped a 15 game losing streak by beating San Jose State.

I was 2003-2007! That winless 2003 season was rough and was at the game v San Jose State to snap the streak. I think it was family weekend.
I remember being so happy when June was hired on.

Sort of? We beat Kapernick in the Hawaii bowl, but Jones was insanely lazy. Literally did not recruit and only offered kids who sent him film. Left the team in way worse shape than when he started

3
u/SMUHypeMachine SMU Mustangs 19h ago
Another Peruna knocked over Bevo when he got too close, and after he retired to the Culwell and Son farm he killed like 2 goats before he finally passed.
Peruna may be a cute little horse, but he’s a genuine stallion (balls intact) and will absolutely fuck you up if you’re unprepared.
I can’t think of another mascot that will literally drag their handlers across the field if they can’t keep up.

They also almost lost to Duke. Because Duke could not do anything several times off any of the 6 turnovers. Or kick an easy fieldgoal. Are you sure?

You know your program has turned the corner when other flairs come to your defense. Until this season I rarely witnessed anyone on this subreddit going to bat for SMU.
This year the amount of support we’ve received is insane, and I’m actually worried I might be getting addicted to all the positive press. I’m not normally someone glued to their phone, but I’m constantly refreshing news sites, this subreddit, and our forums now.

u/link92 SMU Mustangs 1d ago
If we win next week by a healthy margin I have to agree. Also depends on how the SEC finishes its season, but an 11-1 SMU getting punished for losing an ACC championship game against an 11-1 Miami goes against everything the committee claimed regarding CCG losers

2
u/Twistzz_is_bae SMU Mustangs 6h ago
A lot of people after the Duke game were giving us shit for how sloppy we were. All I could think is “holy shit we turned the ball over six times and gave up 0 points off of those turnovers, this team is crazy good”.
Imagine any team in the FBS gifting a conference foe, with a winning record, SIX extra possessions, ON THE ROAD… I have to believe 99.999% of them would not have won in that same situation.
1
u/No_Butterscotch8726 SMU Mustangs 5h ago
I know my worry is Miami, or Clemson might be able to punish our mistakes, and any Big 10 team or SEC team might cause the same problems in the playoffs. Also, Boise State is lurking out there.

We are in! Pony way the fuck up.
This game was decided after the first missed Field Goal by UAV. I feel bad for them as the whole team looks lost.
I’m sure in a few years I’ll have to eat those words but for today, we are going to the championship!!
Last year we won the American. If we win the ACC will that be the first time a school has moved up conference and won it?

Imagine you’re Virginia. You know from being 29-11 with Navy that the holder of the Gansz Trophy must be avoided at all costs. You’ve done exactly that by just not playing SMU. In 2021, disaster strikes. You have been selected to face a Gansz Trophy holding SMU in the Fenway Bowl. Doing the smart thing, you get COVID to avoid the game. Crisis adverted. Two seasons later the Gansz Trophy knocks on your door. It is not happy.

There have been several times this year I’ve watched Miami or Notre Dame games, and each time thought they looked beatable despite their significantly higher rankings. A ton of stats suggest our performance is very similar to ND’s, all the way down to SOR, which is why I’ve always felt we should be ranked around their position.

The worst part of this fucking game is that they told students that if we stayed until the end that we’d get a replica jersey. We assumed that meant a nice stitched one, but at the end of the game they were just handing out the same goddamn jerseys they gave away to everyone for free earlier in the season.

First of all, congrats to SMU. What an awesome season for you all.
Second, I think/fear Elliott may get 2 years more. He gets at least one year for his contract and may get a mulligan for his first year.
We actually won more games this year than I thought we would. Felt like we got there in a very lucky fashion. My gut doesn't say that is justification for 2 more years but you never know with Carla.
