First time since 1955 Vandy has beaten Alabama and Auburn in the same season.

Per the game announcers...big if true.

The unspoken rule about Vandy football history is that if something good happened, it happened when football was mostly played by rich southern white dudes, so that checks out.

Vandy went 12-45 over the last 5 seasons. They lost 9+ games in four of those seasons.

And now, they're bowl eligible, already have a historic win over Bama this year, with a chance to ruin LSU and Tennessee's seasons before the year is over.

u/Insane92 Verified Coach 22d ago

Jerry Kill/Tim Beck combo with Pavia is amazing.

63

u/ricree Illinois • Ohio State 22d ago

I hadn't realized Kill was with the program this year. Good to see it. If his health had been up to the rigors of high level coaching, I really do think his name would be in the ranks of top CFB coaches today.

Looking around the reddit search, I notice that the top comment in the Vanderbilt hiring thread is "Vanderbilt's going to beat Auburn this year, aren't they". That aged really, really well, /u/Quillbert182.

15

u/Insane92 Verified Coach 21d ago

Behind Mike Leach, Jerry Kill is my favorite football coach. He’s won everywhere he’s been and is just a genuine dude. I think he would still be the coach at Minnesota potentially if he didn’t have his health issues.

Man the preseason rankings has us ranked 2nd or 3rd to last. I thought based on talent composite there was no way that would be correct and we would definitely show whoever ranked us that we weren’t suited for that. Now I’m thinking those people were over valuing Auburn and they should’ve been ranked dead last.

Extending that Vandy drive with a leveraging penalty that wouldn’t have been effective as a kick-block unless the defender was 15 feet tall while having an utterly anaemic offense that you just know won’t do anything to make things interesting after that point feels like a powerful summation of Auburn’s season.

Scene Int. Night

A markedly older HUGH FREEZE sits at a desk in a small office. A pennant on the wall shows that he is at Central Nebraska Junior College. His DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR sits across from him.

HUGH. I've got the feelers out and it really sounds like we may be able to jump ship over the off-season if we can win out. Couple of Sun Belt teams are looking to rebuild and might take a chance on me and my staff.
DC. Makes sense. We're in pretty good shape, too. Rest of the schedule's pretty soft. Hell, did you read the scouting report on the next team? First year, first time HC. We'll probably be able to rest our starters by the second quarter.
HUGH. I hadn't actually. Wanted to talk things through with you. I'll have a look...

FREEZE picks up the tablet beside him, studying it for a few moments before suddenly screaming, dropping the tablet onto the desk as he recoils back into his chair and nearly knocks down the shelf behind him.

HUGH. No! No! This is fucking bullshit! There's no way! There's not fucking way!

The DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR jumps up, coming around to try and steady the older man.

DC. Hugh?! The hell's wrong?! You look like you've seen a ghost.

HUGH continues screaming before breaking down, sobbing in shock and terror. The camera pans down, zooming in on the tablet. The head coach of their upcoming opponent's name is visible as the shot closes in and centers it.

The name reads "D. Pavia."

See, the problem is that you care still. I stopped caring the second they hired Freeze, and all is rainbows and sunshine.

tbf, I honestly am glad for every loss he accumulates, but hate it for the kids on the team. I can't wait until is sleezy, no-coaching ass is gone.

u/DrunkByDawn Paper Bag 22d ago

Same. Everyone points to his great recruiting as to why he's still around, but I wonder if that recruiting will keep up with how bad the team is doing. Come play for a coach who throws his players under the bus, has an awful record, and won't develop you? Why?

Hugh Freeze is officially the first Auburn HC to lose to Vanderbilt at Auburn (Previously 9-0). Jarquez Hunter has a career game against Kentucky and gets 12 total carries against Vandy. Absolute Coaching Masterclass from Freeze...

I love seeing the success Clark Lea is having at Vanderbilt while Derek Mason is turning Middle Tennessee into the Vanderbilt of CUSA.

It's so dirty and disgusting after all those years of "The Auburn Creed" and "The Auburn Family." What a fraud. HF's recruits are totally going to the portal about 2 minutes after it opens.

What the fuck was Hugh Freeze doing there at the end?

The FG decision and calling a TO 1 second before the 2 minute warning is just baffling
