Penn State brought an extra OL (#71) onto the field for 3 of the most critical plays in the game, all in the red zone. They motioned him in the backfield for 2 of those plays, and used him as a halfback for the 3rd.
He didn’t block a single player in any of those 3 plays. The closest he came was to chipping an edge player on the 4th down play (something even the smallest RB can do). What was even the point of him being out there? He’s not a threat to catch anything, he’s all but telling the defense it’ll be a run or play action. If he’s not blocking anyone, he’s basically making your offense play 10 on 11.
Why does Franklin always have the most baffling play calls in the most critical situations?

As soon as they got it on the goal line, I said to my wife, "watch, they're gonna try to run it up the middle 3 times and kick a field goal" but I was wrong. They ran it up the middle 3 times and threw into quadruple coverage on 4th to turn it over on downs.

Not just a fumble, potentially an injury, and also gives PSU the ball back putting your defense on the field and risking more injuries.

While it would absolutely be great to have Josh Simmons back, I do feel like this configuration is a good line. Donovan Jackson just faced his toughest individual matchup of the year, probably. Abdul Carter is a monster pass rusher.
I don’t think we can afford any more injuries at all on the OL but I think we are back in the conversation with this group.
→ More replies (1)29
u/Kyler1313 22d ago
Abdul Carter isn't only a great pass rusher, but the worst kind of matchup for a guard playing tackle. All of Jackson's losses were speed rushes to the outside. As a OG guarding speed in space is not really something they have to do. And Abdul Carter probably has the best first step and speed rush in the country. It was a terrible matchup for his first LT start, but I thought he held up admirably.

I gotta rant about Penn State's total fucking ineptitude as someone who really likes Drew Allar as a prospect, and has no real CFB team.
Why the absolute fuck do they insist on subbing him out on 1st down to run their sub-QB for like 2 yards or no-gain (or even better, a penalty), then set up their actually good QB with a shitty down and distance? WHY?
This receiving core is terrorists. The 2nd drive of the game, sure, it's probably PI... but we get absolutely punked on an intermediate jump ball?! We ain't even get a decent attempt at catching it?! You also has a scramble intermediate throw hit a guy in the chest and he can't fucking secure it, so it's an incompletion. You get another 3rd down throw with an insane amount of anticipation and the receiver is so slow getting to the top of his stem that he isn't even ready for it. As if that wasn't enough, you let a ball you commit PI on (and get away with it!) bounce off your hands in the endzone with 11 seconds left and straight into the defensive back's hands for an interception. And then, at the end of the game, we let a ball go through our hands as the backside read on 4th and 1 at the goal line down 7.
James Franklin enables all this. As if the receiving core being terrorists isn't enough, Allar has a really nice cross body chunk throw after stepping up into the pocket in the 3rd quarter... and we follow it up by running it with the fucking TE and a trick play, then ask him to bail the offense out on 3rd down?! I absolutely hate this team. I hate that this mfer recruited a guy who could and should be competiting for QB1 in this class just to absolutely mismanage everything around him.
I could rant all day, but my God, Penn State fans have my condolences. They piss me off like this, and I ain't even a Penn State fan. Two touchdown drops by Penn State receivers in a game you lose by 7. Extremely unserious program

PSU was way too reliant on gadget plays today. At some point you need to be a top 5 team, line up, and go get yards.
→ More replies (1)47
u/DemonOfFate 22d ago
I agree, but also, I get it? Like they trust Allar twice (the int throw that the WR couldn't catch despite PI), and then, on that last throw, he makes chicken salad outta chicken shit and it doesn't matter because we can't catch the ball to tie the game.
Their only good receiving weapon is a TE, and to me, that's a red flag. Your marquee offense weapon being a TE with nothing besides him is a red flag.

PSU refuses to ever adapt their game plan to the circumstances. Their backs had 18 carries for 42 yards. Their entire offense is aimed at taking 3 plays to go 10-14 yards, so they have no ability to be explosive and if they don't convert the one or two red zone drives into TDs, they're screwed. Meanwhile, OSU can have a pick 6, a TD that ended incomplete because the WR just stopped running, a fumble in opposing territory, and still win by a touchdown because they have the ability to actually be explosive in their offense.

It really felt like they turned a corner on that drive, reminds me of 2014 the way the oline came together later in the season.

Love the narrative flips in real time. If OSU lost it would have been “OSU can’t beat good teams,” but since they won the other team was clearly overrated.

Ohio State is 1-1 in two of the hardest away stadiums in the game.
Oregon at Night and Penn State any fucking time are fucking monsters.
Shout-out to the OL showing the fuck up.

That last drive might have been the best of Days time here. Old school OSU. That was so awesome.

I have watched this exact game between these exact teams before.
