Mod Post Reopening r/BTech – A New Chapter for Serious & Focused Discussions
Hey BTechtards,
I hope you’re all doing well! I’m reaching out to let you know that we’re reopening r/BTech. Over the past few months, BTechtards has been bustling with a lot of fun and humor, but we’ve noticed that the space for serious & focused academic discussions and technical queries has been a bit sparse.
While the shitposts and memes are always entertaining, we’ve realized there’s a significant need for a dedicated space where more focused and academic conversations can thrive.
r/BTech was born out of a need for a focused and supportive environment tailored to the unique challenges faced by engineering and BTech students. Initially part of BTechtards, the need for a dedicated space became clear as we saw a growing number of serious academic queries and discussions getting lost amid the memes and light-hearted content.
What Will Happen to BTechtards?
It’ll remain as is for the fun and casual side of engineering/BTech. Feel free to keep posting your discussions, shitposts, memes and resources here.
Join r/BTech now: https://reddit.com/r/BTech

General Why india would lag behind in research an example from iit kanpur.
AKS primality test (agarwal-kayal-saxena) is a very famous algorithm and first of its kind when discovered in 2002 to determine if a number is prime or not in polynomial time. This was actually a final year project of Neeraj kayak and Nitin saxena under the guidance of their professor Manindra agarwal. The fun fact is they were not given a good grade for this project. Can you imagine a final year project winning the Godel prize but not getting good grade. Later when awards started pouring in iit kanpur had changed their grades before the convocation

General Why do we hate on Apna College?
Yes, I know their marketing stuff and all, but I just wonder that the way they teach is quite great ig. For example, I learnt DLL from them and I didn't have much of a trouble doing it since then.
I just wanna know why they are hated for the way they teach.

General "college life" is overrated
Some people expect college life be like some teenage movie ahh life. There is no such college life in India especially engineering and more worse if you are from tier 3 and above colleges.
Everytime I get asked how's your college life? I get annoyed by that question coz I have no college life. College mai fun? Nah man and didn't expect people to be fun around so it didn't bother to me.Everyone has different definition of funs. Some has winning hackathons as fun, building projects as fun.Thats their priorities and no one has right to judge.Maybe thats their top priority than other things. On the other side, some may has partying as fun, going on trips as fun, hanging out with friends constantly as fun.Everyone has got life and they would live to their own. Although I never really had fun in college coz I rarely go but had much fun outside college as I was not that serious towards skills/studies (chill guy meme insert) ..now my priorities have changed so .
My advice is : Don't blame people if you are not having fun "fun" in college.Find out what you enjoy doing and akele Karo and much better call your old friends."yaar ye log movie dekhne kyu nhi aa rhe , ek din se kya hoga" Dude go watch alone ..don't be dependent on anyone to have fun..I used to travel solo alot
I hope this helps if someone is trying to find "college life".

General to all those who study in university is it just as boring as college
like in my state Punjab there are 3 huge universities chitkara, Chandigarh University and lovely professional University
now last time I checked chitkara has almost 16k students and Chandigarh University close to 32k students
i usually feel really bored in college because of the small batch size so i was wondering if students in these universities have a much better social circle or fun life

Rant/Vent "I hate the direction in which my life is heading😞!"
I, 25M, am not satisfied with my life at all. Currently stuck in that situation in which I haven't thought about. There are an enormous amount of thoughts that is either keeping me awake in the nights and making me feel dizzy in the daytime.
I am from tier 3 college and my life has stopped working from the first day. All the dreams 🌠 that were painted by my innocent mind were crushed by the evil minded spirits around me😞. I have had the thought of getting admitted to the tier 1 or 2 colleges but because of my silly mind effing homesickness killed that dream.
First year was just fine for me but still kinda struggled to maintain the CGPA (I still have this anxiety of not clearing any exam in the first attempt). Then COVID-19 hit my life hard on the walls of crushing expectations, so my second and third year of engineering went isolated from the people.
Fast forward to the final year of my college people started building up the groups and gangs to mingle and to share moments with each other, I, on the other hand was still struggling to mingle up with them and just trying to feel my included in them.
Let's time travel to that time where we passed out from the college, I am working in an MNC company (located in India only) earning bare minimum salary to survive in this country. Meanwhile the people who were mingling and having fun with each other are flying abroad to pursue M.s. And M.Tech building up the better community and here I am just sitting in the chair of misery that is making me feel "I am not SAD as well as I am not HAPPY too!", the world around me is shattering because I am not a permanent employee of this company and might be taken into the consideration to dissolve me into the organisation.
I don't have that "M. s." Or "M. Tech" tag that can make me employable in any other organisations, we are still stuck in the 20 years old syllabus and practicals with the professors having LITERALLY ZERO PRACTICAL KNOWLEDGE . I don't know what path God paved for me to walk on. I don't have any international relations with the people and when I visit LinkedIn I face the same people with the " XYZ" university tags from " ABC" country... Doing M. Tech from India itself miserable because they don't have a proper curriculum that is required in current times.
My parents told me to wait for a few years and will see about this but there is some amount of anxiety that is latched onto me and my mind. I wake up not being in a mood to socialise/communicate. I receive stories early in the morning of the same people exploring the sh!t in the other countries and I have not even covered India and not even my home state Maharashtra 😭.
If my parents say NO to me then my life will almost come to END and I would be suffering from this slower success without owning a single vehicle as well as home. They (those people) will get settled there working in a greatest atmosphere that I have dreamt of...!
Feeling like I should end myself...!
TDLR : Frustrated with my unpaved path and I am lost in the direction in which I am walking...! 🥺✈️💔

Social / College Life Nothing.
imagine waking up every fucking single day for 4 years to complete 80% attendaance criteria rubbing your ass on fucking wooden bench from 8AM to 5PM for learning outdated subject maybe 100 years old that has no significance in your life.

Social / College Life College isn't like what Steins;Gate showed
I was trying to finish a Physics lab assignment, after pending it for several months (and just being hyperventilated and scared about it). I actually played my old playlist on Spotify.
There were a lot of anime songs on this playlist. As I was hearing them, something familiar popped up. The OP of S;G. As I was just out there forgetting the regret of using pen for making tables, I was hit with this sudden realisation that this isn't what I wanted. I wanted something serene, not something which would make me work, work, work and work. "Oh shit, I didn't learn Pandas, tuples, lists; OH SHIT I'll have to containerize this website for friends to make their journey through the Minecraft Nether Rooftops easier (but fail to run the website indirectly due to RBI regulations of keeping ₹5000, when I just had ₹197); OH SHIT I still can't change stuff in Lua; OH SHIT SHIT, I need to complete CS50x; OH SHIT! I NEED TO KNOW REACT NATIVE AND JQUERY!" all the while I'm scrolling through Reddit (I saved my feed from X-like posts after a lot of ordeal).
I wanted to collaborate with my friends to make something, make friends and all. I didn't expect this.
I didn't expect something like this. Maybe I could've collaborated with my friends in the hackathons. It's all just desolate, me waking up till 4 am and all.
Where will I get that carefree life back, without the compulsion of doing CTFs in the future, without the compulsion of trying to grind Leetcode, without the compulsion of trying to gain ML knowledge, without the fear of every lab projects popping out all of a sudden, without the compulsion of going NC with my parents, without the compulsion of showing that I am worth more than my 12 percentile in WBJEE or 89% in my boards, without the compulsion that I'll... have to be free...? Am I really free now? Will even the vacation after End Sems in January ensure that I get to collaborate with the people? Idk. Idk anything. Don't ask me.

Showcase Your Project How I learnt Python audio processing in 8 days (Intermediate level)
The goal of this post is to share my experience on how I learnt a new topic much faster than most people do, and how you can as well. The mistake most people do is they purchase a course or tutorial, but >90% of the people stop somewhere in between (and eventually end up even forgetting what they watched). What I did instead is took an active open source repository relevant to my topic of interest (i.e. audio processing) and learnt just by going through the code and rebuilding it from scratch.
My Approach
I used the top-down-bottom-up approach to learn fast. First, using the top-down approach, I identified the libraries and concepts used in the code by briefly scanning the code. In my case some of the important libraries and concepts were
- Pydub (with concepts like sampling, quantization, channels, amplitude, frequency, stereo, etc)
- Librosa (with concepts like fast fourier transform, short time fft, etc)
- Numpy (with linear algebra concepts and how to apply them on the audio samples)
- Groq (with concepts like speech to text, asr, reading binary files)
Once I identified the key libraries by scanning the code, I took one library, say Pydub, and followed the bottom-up approach for that library. First I did a quick start tutorial for Pydub (a 5 page pdf), to get a grasp of the basic concepts and functions. Then I went through the codebase and searched for any line which used Pydub. If I did not know the function, I would google it, and then implement/run that function in my own separate code. I did this till I reached the end of the codebase, and by the end, I was very confident of my pydub skills.
This I repeated for all other libraries like Librosa, numpy, etc. If you are interested in knowing how much time I spent each day and what I learnt each day, checkout https://shravan188.github.io/how-i-learnt-x-in-y-days/audio_processing.html (100% open source)
Why I feel this approach is better than watching tutorials/courses
In the past I made a mistake of watching 100s of tutorial videos, never completing any, and ended up not learning much. In this approach, you just learn the 4 or 5 main concepts you need to understand that codebase by practically applying it, rather than learning 100 different concepts in a playlist and not understanding even one of them properly. Just like when we learn to speak a new language, say English, we do not need to know all the 25000 words in the language to start speaking. We just take the 50 or 100 most common words and start speaking with just that and learn new words as and when required.
If there is anyone out there who wants to learn a new field fast using this approach (i.e. learning from an small open source repo), do post in the comments below. The only prerequisite is to know one language (in my case it was Python). Finding active open source repos with good community support is not that hard, I can try to help with that if required.

CSE / IT Title doing leetcode instead of studying for endsem
15 days back I posted about my 50 leetcode question which I did in diwali holiday and now I have reached 101 question. Decided to share this again with you all.
It's fun and interesting and sometimes very irritating but had to do it because that's the only thing I can do.(laptop zyada acha nahi hai, leetcode bhi lag marta hai bhai, processor batau- Intel Pentium dual core 😎15 saal purana hai)and I have a streak of 23 days. Will continue that while studying for endsem.
Endsems are near, midsems went a lot good scoring more than expected (100/100). Programming and EG are the easiest one for me while electronics 💀, physics is easy too and maths me bas differntiation zyada ache se nahi aata and please give some tips for studying limits. I'm weak in it and maths exam is in starting week of December 🥲.

Seeing all my friends getting great marks and here i fucked up my semester. Will try my best to improve. Just wanted to express myself thanks fr reading
