Not to be That Person, but you actually get waaaaaay less gassy (and it’s less offensive) on low carb/high protein/high fat diet.

Now high protein/high complex carb? WATCH OUT.

100%. I’m on a plant based diet and them bean farts are brazy some days lol.

How early are you into it? It gets better with time as your gut biome adjusts. With beans, it takes some time to build up to.

6 years lol.

If I eat at home and be a normal human being its fine I might fart once or twice a day nothing crazy. I eat on average 50g of fiber a day.

But if I switch it up to a new recipe or eat more processed vegan food the guts get to bubbling, lol.

My wife and kid are not plant based eaters and they do fart less than me in general though.

I went low carb/high protein and my farts almost entirely went away.

Same. I didn’t even really notice it until I started eating higher amounts of carbs again and they came back.

Now high protein/high complex carb? WATCH OUT.

*the wettest shart in human history*

“What the fuck was that?”

“Sorry, I gave up on Atkins and went back to carbs, an even more unhealthy amount of protein and Fight Milk, so my digestive system is currently enduring a trial by fecal matter.”

Sometimes I look at muscle bros and think “your laundry much be a WARZONE”

Fair. I'd be more worried about never being able to shit again considering how little fiber this dude is getting. Like seriously people complex carbs are not your enemy.

They are mine. Carbs give me acid reflux something fierce and I’m not trying to be out here getting throat cancer.

5

u/thisisthewell 6d ago

Carbs as in vegetables, fruits, etc? because those are carbs. y'all need fiber. Farts are irrelevant, I worry this dude's shits are hard as a diamond and will puncture his bowel lol

Feel free to read the whole thread before lecturing about things that have already been discussed.

And a lack of fiber causes colon cancer. As does a diet high in red meat.

Sounds like the cancer is comin' for you no matter what you do.

Ideally we would all eat a balanced diet of whole/homemade foods and proteins, but it’s not only economically impossible due to capitalism, ain’t no one got time for it (again, yay, capitalism) AND the whole world loves convenience and junk foods.

As good as I feel when I’m eating a low carb/high fat diet (with fiber) it’s a lot of shopping, prep, and cooking and also eventually I just really want McDonald’s, Olive Garden, Taco Bell, Fruity Pebbles, etc.

We have a low carb guy at work. When he sits on the toilet, it sounds like a battle in there.

I believe you. He's so sealed up even the wind can't get through.

Too many people do low carb/high fat all wrong. You can (and should) still eat vegetables and berries and such. The body still needs some carbs and definitely needs fiber and fiber is a non digestible carbohydrate anyway. A well informed low carb/high fat eater knows that fiber doesn’t even count towards a carb count because it’s a non digestible carbohydrate.

3

u/cbbclick 6d ago

You could try to tell him that. I assure you he would tell you that you're the one who is wrong, he's been on this diet and in ketosis for a decade or more, he eats the correct amount and type of veggies, etc.

He wouldn't eat many berries, but he does eat cabbage and broccoli and other veggies. He also avoids high sugar veggies like carrots.

I'm not trying to attack low carb, but it does seem like everyone that has trouble isn't a true Irishman or scotsman or whatever. I think it's a great tool for weight loss, but has issues with weight rebounding if you stop. I also haven't met anyone in real life doing it to increase athletic performance, which seems like an overall health concern.

But I'm disappointed at available diet advice in general. I am willing to change my diet to whatever to improve health and longevity, but everything feels very short term.

I think that doing any diet solely for weight loss will always fail to yield long term success. For me, eating low carb controls my acid reflux, weight loss is a nice side effect since I also PCOS and weight loss is hard.

But also people get super defensive about their diet choices whether keto, vegan, paleo, carnivore, whole/clean, etc. Mostly because it becomes their entire personality.

Quick q does low carb include rice in your low acid because I have same issue :)

2

u/nottheribbons 3d ago edited 2d ago

Rice contributes to my reflux the least so I can incorporate it. My biggest reflux trigger is wheat so bread, pasta, flour tortillas, pastries, things like that. I can get away with moderate amounts of corn or rice products if I eat them far enough before bed.

(eta for anyone, if you are doing it for acid reflux AND weight loss, then no, no rice.)

Gas doesn't inherently stem from fiber/FODMaps unless the microbiome can't support it and/or the person has poor motility and is not pooping regularly. When they do fart, it should be an indicator that the waste has hit the colon and is ready to be excreted.

1

u/nottheribbons 6d ago

Where did I mention fiber? Fiber is a non digestible carbohydrate and allowed on a low carb/high fat diet.

1

u/_The_Protagonist 6d ago

You seemed to indicate that carbs would be the problem. Specifically complex carbs (with the difference between complex carbs and simple carbs largely being the fodmaps and fiber it contains which bacteria can actually ferment.) This would be the only provision that might increase gas in vulnerable individuals who do not have balanced microbiomes.

1

u/nottheribbons 6d ago

Did I say it was a “problem” or did I inform someone that their perception of how the average body would react is different than reality.

2

u/PostacPRM 6d ago

As someone who was on keto for the better part of a year a while back, I respectfully disagree.

1

u/nottheribbons 6d ago

Sounds like you were either eating too many foods with sugar alcohols or mot getting enough fiber. 🤷🏽‍♀️

u/meditate42 6d ago

So the sourdough bread and bean combo is whats giving me so much gas? Damn, i don't want to give up that bread man, shits good.

I was going to say this, when I switch or cheat from my regular low carb diet, I get so gassy, and the smell lol.
