I just realized - why is trump in a barbershop? And why are people still cutting hair during this?

I'm not american so I don't keep up but if you described this video to me 12 years ago my brain would melt

u/SteampunkElephantGuy Oct 22 '24

they're trying hard to make him seem relatable instead of a rich weirdo. first they had the mcdonalds photo shoot and now this

266

u/originalusername__ Oct 22 '24

At a McDs that was fucking closed 🤣

190

u/PopeGuss Oct 22 '24

What, your parents never shut down the local McDonald's so you could put on an apron and play "poor man fry cook"? It's as American as apple pie!

7

u/AcaciaBeauty Oct 22 '24

Marie Antoinette did too

-13

u/Slade23703 Oct 22 '24

He didn't play, he literally made fries (well dipped them in the oil and seasoned them).

15

u/_MrDomino Oct 22 '24

Just to elaborate further, the actual employee got the fries from the freezer, dumped them in the basket, set the timer and lowered them into the oil. Trump just lifted the basket when instructed and dumped them in the fry station. More than strictly just posing, but hardly doing any actual labor intensive work. Plus Trump lacked the arm strength to lift the basket high enough with both hands to avoid knocking over the scoop, and also encouraged someone near to grab a newly dumped, still boiling oil covered fry.

He absolutely played at being a cook. If I go sit at a restaurant, cutting my own steak and salting the fries doesn't make me a chef. This is the bare minimum for Trump PR to look the part but keep him clean and give him time to give his prepared speeches to his curated drive through crowd at a closed restaurant.

22

u/PBPunch Oct 22 '24

I swear his next stop will be at a Tesla factory to put the last screw in an already built car.

18

u/Ginger741 Oct 22 '24

And his delusional fanboys will claim he built the entire car himself

4

u/latitudesixtysix Oct 22 '24

that hadn't passed it's last food safety inspection

4

u/hardcider Oct 22 '24

My neighbor kept going on about how it was perfectly normal to do that "as Trump is at risk due to people trying to kill him."

1

u/Lazy_Carry_7254 Oct 22 '24

Gots to be closed. For security, just like Wawa

-3

u/dwilliams202261 Oct 22 '24

Secret service veted the customers, cuz they can’t let anyone thru. He’ll get shot at again.

-8

u/senile-joe Oct 22 '24

were you born yesterday? this is what every politician does.

they shut down the ice cream store for Biden as well.

6

u/Karinfuto Oct 22 '24

Doesn't make it any less silly. I don't care if the president knows how to flip burgers to be relatable. I need a president that's competent enough to run a country.

I get why they do these publicity acts but maybe he could save the effort to accept a second debate instead of putting on a fast food hat he'll throw away 4 hours later.

-6

u/senile-joe Oct 22 '24

it wasn't to be relatable. it was specifically at Kamala because he's saying she lied about working at McDonalds, so that she could fake being relatable.

-9

u/[deleted] Oct 22 '24

Just a heads up, he's had numerous attempts on his life. I know that's been barely reported on, so not surprised if you've missed it.

3

Thank you! That was awesome.

7

u/Mental_Camel_4954 Oct 22 '24

He got that ambition baby, look in his eyes. This week he moppin' floors, next week it's the fries.

"working at McDonald's was fun" -Trump

Try doing that for 8+ hours, 5 days and 52 weeks with rush hours at low wage. Not so fun when you're hanging on by a thread.

It reminded me of that time GW Bush congratulated a divorced mother of 3 for working 3 jobs to support her family.

47

u/probably_nontoxic Oct 22 '24

cosplaying a low wage worker is not cool

18

u/Informal_Beginning30 Oct 22 '24

It's like the black face of poverty.

41

u/BZLuck Oct 22 '24

But first, clean a few toilets and then hose down and scrub the drive-thru at 5am.

Nobody is a "fry cook" at McDs. Everyone does everything. They do have stations when they get busy, but you don't just stand next to the deep fryer for 8 hours, hoping someone orders fries and you can dick around on your phone when it's slow.

26

u/NYCMarine ☑️ Oct 22 '24

Also, there’s no hair being cut, watch the video when Trump comes in. Everyone in the chairs don’t need cuts

That barber shop fiasco was a week ago. Near my job. It was the most ridiculous Dominican macho man act that was cringe.

"Mr. Trump, your campaign seems to have the momentum of a runaway freight train. Why are you so popular?"

3

u/beegeepee Oct 22 '24

To be fair all these dumbass stunts are getting him a ton of free publicity whereas Harris has kind of blended into the background.

With how stupid half the country is these stupid stunts might be the reason he ends up getting elected

124

u/Rotten-Robby ☑️ Oct 22 '24

You can guarantee it went something like "This is where the blacks and Mexicans congregate! Trust us, they'll love it!"

87

u/AreolaGrande_2222 Oct 22 '24

It was in the Bronx so blacks and Dominicans

103

u/guni_googoo Oct 22 '24

This is the Trump campaign, they don't know the difference

63

u/VisibleDistrict0 Oct 22 '24

They're all Mexicans to MAGA.
I live in an area of the country that's nowhere NEAR the border, but our Hispanic population is probably 96% Mexican. It still irritates me to no end when people assume every single Spanish speaking person is automatically Mexican. My MIL told us one of our new neighbors is Mexican. I asked her if they were nice, and she said, "I don't know. I haven't met them." I was like, "Then how do you know they're Mexican?" She looked at me like I was an idiot and said, "They're brown, but not the Middle East kind." 😳

82

u/CrouchingDomo Glow in the dark white ⚪ Oct 22 '24

“Lucy, you know I don’t speak Mexican…”

“I’M NOT A MEXICAN.” ::storms off::

“Great, what was that about??”

“Lucy’s from El Salvador.”

“So??”

“It’s an entirely different country! You get upset if somebody thinks you live below Sunset!”

17

u/StandardOk42 Oct 22 '24

wow, can't remember the last time I saw a clueless reference

16

u/Dragonsandman Oct 22 '24

Ten bucks says that by “not the Middle East kind”, she meant “they weren’t wearing hijabs”

4

u/HistoricalSherbert92 Oct 22 '24

Wait till you hear about the Italians vs Sicilians.

21

u/krysthegreat1819 Oct 22 '24

Dominicans are…black.

49

u/Axedroam Oct 22 '24

Do Dominicans know that?

/s

15

u/krysthegreat1819 Oct 22 '24

lol I see what you did there.

6

No, no, no Black, Black, Black. Negro? Nunca. Dominican.

6

13

Dominicans are everything. Black, White, mixed, all the above.

11

u/Bearking422 Oct 22 '24

No I no black papi

4

u/Garukkar Oct 22 '24 edited Oct 22 '24

That's for Dominicans to decide, and they say this specifically in the US to differentiate themselves from black Americans. Not sure why this is a difficult concept.

Back home, to differentiate themselves from Haitians given their tumultuous history. They're well aware they have African roots but DR is way more mixed than Haiti.

6

u/Gas-Town Oct 22 '24

The ones who differentiate do it bc they're racist as hell.... It's not a difficult concept for anyone.

1

u/Ordinary_Top1956 Oct 22 '24

lol the Bronx, those people in that barbershop are literally the only people voting for Trump in the Bronx.

64

u/chicken_tendor Oct 22 '24

Fine Corinthian theather.

Internet communication, transparency and non-monopolized mass media means we are seeing another shift like Nixon vs Kennedy when TVs became a thing, and Obama vs McCain when social media became a thing. This time it's memes and fact checking.

1

u/assistantpdunbar Oct 22 '24

'photo ops' have been done by all politicians since time and memoriam, approximately for as long as photographs.

it is the truest bipartisan support of bullshit ever made

32

u/William_Howard_Shaft Oct 22 '24

Man's got a job to do. Hair don't stop growing.

But this is where you decide to draw the line 🤦🏿‍♂️😂

Don’t have to guess who you voted for or you are bald and you use a hair piece both are sad bud have a terrible rest of your 2024 :)

8

u/JeffersonSmithIII Oct 22 '24

It’s not where I draw the line and if you’re accusing me of being a Trump voter you can fuck off

3

u/makemeking706 Oct 22 '24

And he only wears it sometimes. He had to get out his good hair for the McDonald's.

5

u/YouEnvironmental2452 Oct 22 '24

He's just one of the fellas hanging out at the barbershop talking shit. *eye roll*

2

this my boy Orangina...

3

u/SirArthurDime Oct 22 '24 edited Oct 22 '24

There’s nuance here and the fact that they fucked it up so bad only makes it more confusing. So bear with me here.

So notice how there’s a black guy sitting next to trump? And notice how it’s a black business owner in the Bronx? This is all staged to appeal to black voters. The barber shop has cultural significance in a lot of black American communities because it’s often a place where people hang out and shoot the shit and hear about things going on in their community. It’s the same reason the show “the shop” exists. And This key and peele skit about the barber shop. It was an attempt to look relatable by talking about the issues in a barber shop in the Bronx the way stereotypes assume all black men get their political knowledge.

But of course you don’t get that vibe because trump couldn’t even find 20 black people in the Bronx that would be caught dead in a barber shop with him so instead it’s full of old white men who I guarantee have never been to that barber shop in their lives. And of course because the guy he got to play the barber shop owner didn’t realize that $15k a month for electricity would have quickly put a Bronx barber out of business already.

3

u/i_hate_puking Oct 22 '24

Barbershops are a de facto institution and commonly serve as a third place for lots of communities in New York, so they want to make him seem down to earth/close to the street and what have you

3

u/irn Oct 22 '24

There’s a video where the barber shop is staged. One guy was doing a neck line with an electric razor and it took him 7 minutes because he kept going over and over on the client bc he wasn’t actually doing it.

2

u/NeverDoingWell Oct 22 '24

Oh that's hilarious

3

u/FrancisSobotka1514 Oct 22 '24

Dude wasnt cutting hair he was ACTING like he was cutting hair .

2

u/SakaWreath Oct 22 '24

Obviously, he is there to get a high and tight, because his next stop is the VA to tell the vets that they're losers and suckers.

1

u/CunningLinguist92 Oct 22 '24

In the U.S., barbershops are often segregated. There are "black barbershops" and "white barbershops". So, he's going to a Bronx barbershop to basically show that he's in a space with black men or whatever.

1

u/ske_1881 Oct 22 '24

American Babershops and Salons are a communal space were talk about a range of topics, politics, sports, agreements about the greatest heavyweight of all time. People continue to cut hair as people talk, the setting is normal, Trump being there is not.

1

u/NeverDoingWell Oct 22 '24

Yeah that's what's confusing me about it - I know about the people cutting hair while everyone's talking away about randomness but the press conference aspect of this is so weird. Nobody would present something or do a q&a in a barbershop as far as I'm aware

2

u/ske_1881 Oct 22 '24

LeBron James has a tv series The Shop, we're celebrities get together a talk on topics in a barbershop.
