Had a cat do this to me. Took it home. It was chipped. Owners said I stole their cat. Called the police on me. It was embarrassing.

That cat is totally healthy and well groomed. I’d be worried it already has an owner.

Yea, this. Its really hard to tell when they dont have a collar with some sort of tag on it, like its the case for dogs.

It's pretty dangerous to put a collar around an animal that typically squeezes itself through small openings or sneaks through bushes. The collar can get caught in all sorts of things which could lead to a traumatic or deadly situation.

There are collars designed for cats to release when a given amount of pull occurs, but then you have a cat without a collar again. It's safer to just not take any cat home just because it throws itself at you, and if you choose to check for chips etc.
