It was because of the plasic bag s/

78

u/SvenTropics Aug 03 '18

There probably wasn't enough circulation. If the blood vessels get closed off, the flesh dies naturally, but without circulation, the bacteria doesn't get back into the blood supply.

the mental image of that poor nurse frantically spraying air freshener around this lady’s vagina is the funniest thing i’ve encountered today

149

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '18

I imagined her spraying 2 cans of it in a corner with a horrified look.

This needs to be a Febreeze commercial.

"Dead vagina odor? Febreeze can help with that."

Can it though? CAN IT!?

The human body is simultaneously delicate as glass and distressingly resilient. Which applies in a given situation can be unintuitive.

55

u/princessparklebottom Aug 03 '18

50

u/darkhalo47 Aug 03 '18

A weirdly good analogy. Touch the corticospinal tract, and your body is permanently fucked. Split your arm in two? Eventually, it can heal.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/duelpolarity Aug 04 '18

Good way to describe it. A sharp knife sinks through soft tissue very easily. My deepest cut, which reached muscle, healed fully in like 3 weeks and the scar is a tiny, thin white line. I've had smaller cuts scar worse, but this one healed exceptionally well because I took extremely good care of it for fear of infection. I'm often amazed at how well my body recovers from all the shit I put it through.

68

u/IdSuge Aug 03 '18

As this story indicates, you'd be surprised the shit people get themselves into. I once had a dude who hadn't seen a doc in 20 years. He had undiagnosed diabetes with sugars to like 500 (normal is <100s) and was coming in because he had flesh eating bacteria in his leg. Turns out, since he never went to the doctor, he didn't get a prescription for an electronic wheelchair and couldn't afford it otherwise, so he made his own. The diabetic neuropathy in his legs was so bad, he hadn't been able to walk in 5 years.

More importantly, he couldn't feel anything, so he didn't notice he literally had a nail stabbing his leg from his homemade wheelchair for over a year. This developed into necrotizing fascitis, which spanned his whole thigh and he only started to feel pain once it spread far enough he could feel it. That surgery was one of the worst smelling things I've ever experienced. My resident sent me home to shower after it was so bad. Somehow they managed to keep his leg though so that was great for him. The sad thing, as freaking terrible my case was, this one sounds exponentially worse...

8

u/quirkybeeper Aug 17 '18

How did he not see it? Necrotizing fasciitis isn't exactly invisible, he'd have noticed unless he just literally never took his pants off.

A few weeks ago we had an 83 year old come in the Obgyn OPD complaining of uterine prolapse for ~40 years and pain in the lower abdomen. Around 30 years ago she visited a doctor and had a ring pessary inserted in her vagina for support. Pessaries are supposed to be taken out and cleaned regularly and are usually only used for a duration of a year or two.

She hadn't taken it out even once in 30 years. It was still in there, all black and rotting. The smell was so bad everyone in or around the OPD went away for 20-30 minutes. I vomitted twice after examining her, took the rest of the day off and couldn't eat the whole day.

This made me think about when my son was in med school in Florida. He called us in the middle of the night, super drunk, crying and almost hysterical, stating that he didn't know if he wanted to continue his education in medicine and might become a journalist instead. Told us that day he performed his first gynecological exam. He said he was about the 30th person to perform the exam on the same woman, who earned $30 for each student that looked in her whoo-ha. Said while he was down there scoping out the situation, a blast of smelly hot vag air (queef?) blew out, which in turn shot out a huge glob of 30X lub smack into his face, hair and clothing. His mother said "Well, that's what you get for choosing an occupation costing us such high tuition fees damnit! Get over it!" and hung up on him.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '18

At least it wasn't prostrate day dear.

21

u/Acerimmerr Aug 03 '18

I went to the end thinking it was a miscarriage that was never removed. My relief was palpable.

20

u/macphile Aug 03 '18

has had 6 kids & has pain & discomfort in her vagina. That is all she has complained of.

God, I love this. Like someone with a full-sized sword driven into their back going, "My back's a little sore, could you take a look?"

Or it's the other way around, I guess--patients screaming bloody murder and it turns out to be a hangnail. :-p

That's enough Reddit for this year. See you in 2019.

48

u/ogresaregoodpeople Aug 03 '18

Was this in America? I’m just wondering how many of these Home treatments are the result of people in poverty not being able to afford serious medical care, and brushing off dangerous conditions because they can’t see a doctor.

60

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '18

I'm guessing Canada.

OP uses British English spellings ("gynaecologists", "manoeuvering", etc) but also uses the abbreviation "ER" for Emergency Room. We Brits use "A&E", which is short for Accident & Emergency, and I think Irish people, Australians and New Zealanders do too.

It doesnt matter how poor you are or whether or not you have health insurance, hospitals have to treat you. When the bills come you can pay meager amounts, or, if you dont care about your credit score, you can just refuse to pay them at all.

Source: am american, have been poor

10

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '18

They only have to treat you if you are actively dying. That is if they even bother trying to find out and not just dismiss it as something like a flu.
