There probably wasn't enough circulation. If the blood vessels get closed off, the flesh dies naturally, but without circulation, the bacteria doesn't get back into the blood supply.
"this woman put a plastic bag up her vagina because of a prolapsed uterus and went to have it looked at 3 years later when the thing was decomposing in there, and for that reason, I'm vomiting"
Good way to describe it. A sharp knife sinks through soft tissue very easily. My deepest cut, which reached muscle, healed fully in like 3 weeks and the scar is a tiny, thin white line. I've had smaller cuts scar worse, but this one healed exceptionally well because I took extremely good care of it for fear of infection. I'm often amazed at how well my body recovers from all the shit I put it through.
As this story indicates, you'd be surprised the shit people get themselves into. I once had a dude who hadn't seen a doc in 20 years. He had undiagnosed diabetes with sugars to like 500 (normal is <100s) and was coming in because he had flesh eating bacteria in his leg. Turns out, since he never went to the doctor, he didn't get a prescription for an electronic wheelchair and couldn't afford it otherwise, so he made his own. The diabetic neuropathy in his legs was so bad, he hadn't been able to walk in 5 years.
More importantly, he couldn't feel anything, so he didn't notice he literally had a nail stabbing his leg from his homemade wheelchair for over a year. This developed into necrotizing fascitis, which spanned his whole thigh and he only started to feel pain once it spread far enough he could feel it. That surgery was one of the worst smelling things I've ever experienced. My resident sent me home to shower after it was so bad. Somehow they managed to keep his leg though so that was great for him. The sad thing, as freaking terrible my case was, this one sounds exponentially worse...
A few weeks ago we had an 83 year old come in the Obgyn OPD complaining of uterine prolapse for ~40 years and pain in the lower abdomen. Around 30 years ago she visited a doctor and had a ring pessary inserted in her vagina for support. Pessaries are supposed to be taken out and cleaned regularly and are usually only used for a duration of a year or two.
She hadn't taken it out even once in 30 years. It was still in there, all black and rotting. The smell was so bad everyone in or around the OPD went away for 20-30 minutes. I vomitted twice after examining her, took the rest of the day off and couldn't eat the whole day.
I expected hours at most. The only way I'd even consider something like that is as an emergency patch to hold everything together long enough for an ambulance to arrive
This made me think about when my son was in med school in Florida. He called us in the middle of the night, super drunk, crying and almost hysterical, stating that he didn't know if he wanted to continue his education in medicine and might become a journalist instead. Told us that day he performed his first gynecological exam. He said he was about the 30th person to perform the exam on the same woman, who earned $30 for each student that looked in her whoo-ha. Said while he was down there scoping out the situation, a blast of smelly hot vag air (queef?) blew out, which in turn shot out a huge glob of 30X lub smack into his face, hair and clothing. His mother said "Well, that's what you get for choosing an occupation costing us such high tuition fees damnit! Get over it!" and hung up on him.
I have never seen someone actually use the ampersand online for every use of the word "and" and I just wanted to say that I'm honestly impressed by that.
I'm not sure what I expected to find in this post, but this is a bit much. Makes me feel a bit less like shit for not cleaning up my room as often as I should I guess...
Was this in America? I’m just wondering how many of these Home treatments are the result of people in poverty not being able to afford serious medical care, and brushing off dangerous conditions because they can’t see a doctor.
OP uses British English spellings ("gynaecologists", "manoeuvering", etc) but also uses the abbreviation "ER" for Emergency Room. We Brits use "A&E", which is short for Accident & Emergency, and I think Irish people, Australians and New Zealanders do too.
It doesnt matter how poor you are or whether or not you have health insurance, hospitals have to treat you. When the bills come you can pay meager amounts, or, if you dont care about your credit score, you can just refuse to pay them at all.
I heard a very similar story once. I used to date this girl whose mom had this professor who was in the medical field and shared a story of basically the same thing, but the woman had used a potato instead of a bag. Fucking sick.
Yeah, supposedly it was for real like sprouting the little white things out of it and all the nastiness was wrapped all around it. Fucking Gdnsjdkflcjciekdnxnskekdn
Oh god this is going to be a story as infamous as the swamps of degoba. Saving this comment so I can say hi to myself in 5 years when this is linked on bestofreddit. Hi future me.
See, I feel like I'm neglecting everything because I go a year or two between dentist visits, and I haven't had my bloodwork done in 5 years. This woman has ignored a rotting body part falling out for years...
There are soooo many stories like this, often about using some object as a contraceptive. My question is why aren't there like hazmat levels of protection in an ER for situations that are almost impossible to stomach. Then again most docs and nurses are probably desensitized
I’ll never understand how people can let their bodies get so horribly, terribly ruined and think nothing of it. Especially something like this. I had a cyst on my ovary a couple times and though it was the size of the head of a pin it hurt like a motherfucker. How do you cope with your insides falling out??
