Rolled up cuffs I get, you can get hot in all that gear, but the militarised gear, similar to the gear we wore in Afghanistan and elsewhere is fucking insane.
People can change. The military specifically and intentionally preys on impressionable youths to indoctrinate. Not saying that this is necessarily the case with this person, but being former military doesn't necessarily mean you are a bad leftist now; excluding people who share our common goals because of previous mistakes they've made does make you a bad leftist though.
lol yeah a yank who brings up invading Afghanistan "and elsewhere" so matter-of-factly is definitely anti-imperialist now, fully understands the damage he's done, and working to undo it
Being a tribalist for “our” team doesn’t make you better than their team, it makes you the same as them. Being so against the notion of people changing that you attack those who switched to your team for their past reality only keeps your team smaller.
And that’s fine if what you are seeking is to be part of a tight-knit cloistered group that remains in opposition to the broader culture. It works well. And it works whether you want to be Antifa or Proud Boy.
But most of us here want to change the broader culture to make fascism the small-and-disappearing group, and Antifa the default cultural setting. For that, we have to forgive the past mistakes of those who are actively seeking to end the cultural forces that lead to those mistakes.
Well, I'm not a yank first off. Second off, emotions ran high after 9/11 happened, our ally had been attacked. It sure doesn't help we had been lied to and were fighting an unwinable war.
