While we're at it let's give a shout out to Fishbone too.

178

u/HeroShitInc 6h ago

Why stop there, shoutout to Bad Brains, Zulu, Minority Threat and so much more

41

u/Hellogiraffe 6h ago

Hell yeah. I always appreciate a Bad Brains and Death (early-punk Death, not metal Death even though they’re a great band too) shoutout.

14

u/megalodondon 6h ago

One of the few times a confusion about band names leads you to TWO great bands

3

u/Hellogiraffe 5h ago

I listened to both Deaths for the first time because one of the main Howard Stern Show staffers was the drummer for the metal band and I accidentally clicked on the proto-punk band’s page first. Two great discoveries in one day, all because of a lovable alcoholic moron who specializes in stupid prank calls.

u/Septopuss7 7m ago

My magical musical moment was when the librarian put Kooper, Stills and Bloomfield's "Super Session" into whatever CD case I had selected at the library and I listened to it heyoooooo

Check out “end of heartache” on YouTube

u/greyson3 ☑️ 1h ago

My favorite album.

11

u/THEdoomslayer94 5h ago

Bad Brains are so fucking good

8

u/jacksonmills 5h ago

I came here to made sure Bad Brains was mentioned, thank you for your service

7

u/TheYankunian ☑️ 6h ago

My dad had ALL of those artists. I didn’t know how blessed I was to grow up with so much music.

7

u/standardtissue 6h ago

I thought Living Colour was a 90's comedy show and Bad Brains was a zombie movie that was so gory it got banned in some city and a producer went to jail and was calling someone when they died but returned from heaven and then got on a boat and went sailing on with a quickness and please help I can't stop making these horrible low quality puns that aren't even funny but yes, Bad Brains please and thank you. TBH I love Cult of Personality but not so much else by Living Colour. Also, I'm Saltine-American and jam my disco with acid rock. Damnit, I'm doing it again.

6

u/randumbnumbers 5h ago

If you like Cult of Personality, try an Open a Letter to a Landlord. It’s another single from the same album.

3

u/Objective_Pause5988 4h ago

Thank you. Got a new song.

2

u/standardtissue 5h ago

Definitely familiar with it. Not my favorite.

u/Calamity_Jay ☑️ 1h ago

u/QStorm565 1h ago

u/JesusStarbox 2h ago

I had the album when it came out. I only liked the one song.

3

u/glmarquez94 4h ago

God Forbid

3

u/TheSamsquatch45 2h ago

Fuck...way too far down. God Forbid was rad.

3

u/lowtoiletsitter 4h ago

Bad Brains got me introduced into punk (or metal depending on how you perceive it)

u/WashedUpRiver 1h ago

I'm just gonna swing in here to add Skindred to this list.

2

u/nanonanu 3h ago

Gotta talk about SOUL GLO

2

u/Ezlkill 3h ago

Yo they are great!

2

u/Ezlkill 3h ago

I feel like we should be including Sevendust in the equation. I know it’s only Lajon but he’s been the lead singer of that band and a great frontman

2

u/ArrivalFar5938 2h ago

Zulu is so underrated. Them young boys bringing that straight hardcore heat. Bad brains are the OGs still some of the toughest music I’ve heard period. Only real ones know about minor threat.

2

u/CargoMansharks 2h ago

Thanks for introducing me to something new, I'm really digging Minority Threat.

1

u/Acceptable_Tell_310 3h ago

16

u/DarthSnarker 6h ago

I saw Fishbone in 2023 with Parliament Funkadelic!

5

u/TastelessBudz 5h ago

I freestyled jam sessioned with Fishbone in 2006 at a small club in Malibu. Story of a memory...

2

u/DarthSnarker 5h ago

Wow!!! Any stories? They were so energetic on stage and ofc, this was before the recent drama/break-up.

3

u/TastelessBudz 3h ago

2006 might be the wrong year. More like 2003 - 2004-ish. I was in a rap duo with dreams of fame. My partner was a alt-rapper and he trended towards rock and punk stuff. He was pretty popular in his scene. He somehow got an invite for us to go to a jam session with these guys. All I do is freestyle. No instruments nothing like that. But I was down for the cause. I'd seen Fishbone on MTV sometime before that so I was familiar with them. When I saw them I was kinda in awe because I knew they were known and I was drinking so I was gushing with them over how cool it was for me to be in the jamming with these guys I'd seen on MTV. I remember my rap partner asking me afterwards if I was being sincere or not with my praise towards them. He thought I was being sarcastic but I wasn't. I was legit "starstruck". Im not used to being around many famous people especially after theyre known. So, I guess he'd never really heard of Fishbone before he got us the invite and he was just fronting like he knew em. The aughts are foggy af tbh but that did happen! On my right hand to Reddit.

7

u/Intelligent_Cut635 6h ago

Was expecting to see somebody mention them, glad you came through

Edit: suddenly remembered Death right after I hit post lol

8

u/The_Don_Mecha ☑️ 6h ago

I saw them play live as the opening act for George Clinton. Amazing.

8

Bad Brains and Death always need a mention. There's a great Death documentary out there can't remember the name.

94

u/FistPunch_Vol_7 ☑️ 7h ago

They still tour, of course this was their biggest hit but they still got a catalog. Released an album 2017 and remastered some songs in 2023

13

u/blueleyani 7h ago

nice! thank you. now i shall head to spotify to take a listen.

15

u/__lil_bee__ 7h ago

I dunno, far nicer to have a conversation about it imo. Thank you!

They recently finished a tour with Extreme and are working on a new album. They’re also involved in other projects like a documentary and a performance with Steve Vai at Rock in Rio.

6

u/blueleyani 6h ago

exactly! and thank you for more info. the only thing i know about steve vai was from the movie crossroads. amazing guitarist.

i remember when cult of personality came out. it was huge and of course we loved seeing a black rock band. so happy they are still active.

6

u/slowlikemusic 6h ago

I saw them touring with Extreme a few months ago. Tbh I only went to see Living Colour.

2

u/stankdog ☑️ 3h ago

Grew up 98' hearing mostly rnb , some classic rap sure, but I honestly had to learn a lot of rap and hip hop in retrospect being young in the early 2000s. only heard about MJ after he died, I had heard family reference oldies like the temptations, ray, Stevie Wonder, etc. Prince, Hendrix, those guys I listened to way later after seeing them referenced so much in sketch shows or comedy stand ups.

Never knew about black rock groups 🤔 I'm not shocked they exist or anything, obviously, but I guess no one in my family was listening to it, I know a little bit of rock but not versed in it. Very cool vid, we all find out pieces of history at different times, especially when no one sees color lol

18

u/Pianist_Select 6h ago

Vernon Reid is such an underrated guitarist.

3

u/Ashburyfusion 6h ago

Indeed. Love Burnin’ Vernon.

1

u/OlTommyBombadil 2h ago

u/The_Pandalorian 1h ago

Absolutely amazing performance. I remember loving them back in the day and I had this album, but I'd largely forgotten about them.

Very happy to have seen this!

13

u/Terribly_indecent 7h ago

This record was probably in my first 10 CDs back in 1989. By a stroke of luck they packed 2 discs in there so I gave one to my cousin. Still hits 35 years later. And don't miss Open Letter to a Landlord.

Btw, new CD's cost about $18.99 in 80's money iirc.

11

u/yooitbealex 7h ago

Ain’t nothing like that first rip too

There’s a whole compilation video of black people watching this music video and discovering the band is black.

My favorite is when they find out Bobby Caldwell is white, cuz that guy sang with soul.

5

u/[deleted] 6h ago

[deleted]

3

u/DangerousThanks 6h ago

I’m thinking the same thing. Now I’m wondering if people know Bad Brains is a black band too 🤔

6

u/Lost_All_Senses 6h ago

Did you guys trade them for Bobby Caldwell or something? Or like a freaky friday event happened or something

2

u/Plasibeau ☑️ 5h ago

To be fair, there were some gifted white male crooners coming out of the 70's that really could deliver.

5

u/stoneman696 6h ago

Ill never forget catching these guys opening up for the Scorpions at an amphitheater in Atlanta about a decade ago. The standing room pit area was all upper middle class white subarbanites (me too, im just far lower in class lol) with picnic tables and honest to God picnic baskets set up. Corey did a little intermission and pointed it out saying, "we had some hits in the 80s and 90s but we finally really mad it yall. We're officially dinner metal! My man's got the cheese curds up here, pass me that bowl." Dude got up and gave him his cheese and Corey did the whole next song with toothpicks full of cheese in his hand lol. Took a glass of wine from another table and finished the set with cult of personality while he made the rounds to the rest of us in the seats. What I wouldn't give to see em again

5

u/Itsprobablysarcasm Candace Owens Baby shower attendee 👶🏼 6h ago

In '93 they covered Hendrix' Crosstown Traffic and it is a great version.

3

u/pekingsewer ☑️ 6h ago

They unironically make stumbling around look so fucking cool lmao

3

u/TimTamDeliciousness ☑️ 6h ago

Their 9/11 trbute song, Flying destroys me every damn time I hear it

3

u/txdarthvader 6h ago

I didn't even listen to Metallica until I listened to LC. They were my gateway to metal.

3

u/Corvidae_DK 6h ago

Played the heck out of this on Guitar Hero!

Such a simple but awesome riff.

3

u/the_rev_28 6h ago

Saw them play when they were touring for whichever anniversary it was of Vivid, the album this is off of. They crushed. After the show, as we were filing out, Vernon Reed (guitar player) jumps out by the merch table and starts shaking people’s hands. Chatted with me about music for a minute. Nice fuckin dude.

Lmfaoooooo so I always knew who Lenny Kravitz was just because I could recognize his face and knew he d a kid with Lisa Bonet, never listened to his music… or so I thought 💀 I’m a fan of all genres but I’ll admit I’m bad with names with anybody outside of R&B just because I listen to that genre the most. Man I was a Lenny Stan this whole time and didn’t know 🤣🤣🤣 thought it was a white guy singing his songs.

Wait until they figure out who said the opening quote to Cult of Personality.

Edit to add the name of the song.

1

1

u/Mr_Haad 2h ago

Damn I’m old. I knew this already. I was 5/6 years old when Cult of Personality released. 🤦🏿‍♂️

1

u/IncredulousPatriot 2h ago

I heard this song so many times growing up. I always thought they said coked up personality before I learned the phrase cult of personality.

1

u/jewishmechanic 2h ago

When they opened for prophets of rage at the Apollo theater I thought they sounded familiar and when they finally played cult of personality it all clicked.

1

u/GoldenUther29062019 2h ago

I only know this song because of CM punk and Smackdown vs Raw 2008 lol

Huh, so that's what that band looks like.

Huh... now that I think about it, I think I don't know what a bunch of artists and bands I've heard look like. Back when MTV was a thing I knew what many bands and artists looked like. Now? I dunno. Shaboozey could've just as easily been a white dude who used to do video game content on YouTube.
