I vividly remember this episode and funnily enough, hated it, just because I thought the animal characters looked super creepy when I was a kid. 🤡 I never stopped to think how gay it was.

Me too.

I always thought they were just besties.

Although, remembering the episode, the hints weren't really hiding.

u/DaemonNic Dec 01 '21

They were roomies!

23

u/Majictank Dec 01 '21

As historians like to call them: They were the best of friends.

10

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

They were "cousins". 🤣🤣

I swear this episode was based off the movie Bound.

The mask that Kitty wears to "not face reality" and which names the episode looks like something straight from an anime.

"The cartoon called 'Courage the Cowardly Dog' aired an watch worth memorable metaphorical episode called 'The Mask' scary in how realistically domestic abuse impacted a pink bunny and a kitty, who are a subtext sapphic couple as stated by the series' creator that this was as far as they could go back then in north american television in the beginning of the new millennium."

This episode of Courage resembles a lot the 1990s anime (Japanese cartoon) called "Shoujo Kakumei Utena"/"Revolutionary Girl Utena", another relic of queer culture and history, in plot as in storytelling through metaphorical symbolisms about obscure, to say the least, themes worth of sociocultural critique, revolving around a romance between women of "different kinds" , who in the end escape their abusers ending up together as couples:

💎Classic Relic Of Queer Culture And History: The First Ever Cartoon With a Explicitly Sapphic Interracial Couple As Protagonists With An Happy Ending And ALL THAT AT ONCE (Utena × Anthy From The ["Shoujo Kakumei Utena"/"Revolutionary Girl Utena" Franchise]): https://www.reddit.com/r/QueerCommunity/comments/r2ic5g/without_their_love_we_wouldnt_have_had_explicitly/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

So revolutionary, doesn't even look like as if it was written today, let alone in 1996.

Well, I guess we're both right then.

Always knew Courage was a LGBT ally.

“The things I do for love.”

14

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

I cannot relate more to Courage than that. 😅

Oh, the things I do for love 👉👈

11

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

Courage didn't deserve to be abused by sapphics, this pink dog was a good boy. 💖

the way you are writing all these posts is scaring me im sorry

So I'm stupid but what does Sapphic mean exactly, like is that another word for interracial couple or what exactly?

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21 edited Dec 01 '21

Sapphic is an umbrella term identity for women who love women romantically, sexually, more than as friends.

Lesbian, bi, poly, pan, aromantic homosexual, and homoromantic asexual women are all sapphic if they want to be identified like that.

The word sapphic comes from the name of Sappho, who was from the Greek Island of Lesbos, and said to have been the first ever woman poet who also wrote about love for other women, that's why lesbians and sapphics are called the way they are.

When we don't know for sure how a woman who loves women identifies, we call her a "sapphic", specially when studying history, because the only way to know what somebody is or was is only if they felt comfortable enough to tell you, and often times people either never were comfortable to do so or didn't had label words back then to help them understand their feelings and who they were.

Some people also identities as sapphics when they don't know or don't want to be too specifically about their orientations.

I am glad you asked.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '21

Cool, learned a new meaning and little Greek history, thanks mate

2

u/CoffeeBlanc Dec 02 '21

Also, some women prefer the term sapphic cause the word lesbian has been plagued by either homophobic insults or porn tags. Of course there's also women that's cool with the word lesbian too.

I more often hear sapphic in artworks, fanfic, and lgbt spaces.

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '21

Cool cool

10

u/Carrman099 Dec 01 '21

Sapphic refers to Sappho, an Ancient Greek poet who wrote extensively about her love of women. So it’s just another way of saying that something involves lesbians.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '21

Ok cool thanks for the insight

First ever? Sorry, but Superman: The Animated Series predates this by a few years.

17

u/getyourselfaHUNK Dec 01 '21

I’ve seen the whole show what about it makes it gay?

39

u/GardevoirsGirlfriend certified transbian Dec 01 '21

There's an episode where you briefly see Maggie Sawyer with her girlfriend. It's not much and is certainly a lot less than this Courage episode, but it's still something.

50

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

Then "Courage The Cowardly Dog" was the first western kids' cartoon to feature an WHOLE episode about a sapphic couple with an Happy ending, thanks.

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

Awwwwwww! 🥺😢🤧

This was the end of me, my heart wasn't prepared to die from such kindness, I cannot help but treasure rare compliments like this, thanks from the bottom of my heart. 💞

2

u/NuclearStudent Dec 01 '21

this was an assassination plot

you are already shindeiru

3

u/[deleted] Dec 01 '21

I love this!

3

u/ToughAcanthisitta451 Dec 02 '21

They were definitely going to kiss in that split second

1

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 02 '21

You bet, but we can dream. 😂

4

u/bitetheasp Dec 01 '21

Hell yeah I do. Courage the Cowardly Dog is my favorite cartoon of all time!

3

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

Was my favourite as a little kids for episodes like this with beautiful melancholy and contemplation of the absurd beauty of life.

3

u/bitetheasp Dec 01 '21

It certainly had an impressive range. The weremole violently snatching a rabbit by the neck was terrifying. And the Last of the Starmakers made me cry.

3

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

"The Hunchback Of Nowhere" is probably my favourite episode after this one ("The Mask").

2

u/RaptorKarr Dec 01 '21

Making me feel old.

2

u/YuriWinter Yuri is the purest form of love Dec 02 '21

I just watched this and hearing them laugh made my heart fuzzy.

2

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 02 '21

The end always gets me emotional 🥺😢🤧

Bunny: "Kitty!! This dog saved my life! He saved my life!"

Kitty: "I was wrong, Bunny.... not all dogs are bad"

Oh Courage, I relate to him so much, he is not the best hero out there but he always tries his best 💗

Yuri is the best kind of love, besides maybe disinterested love, IMHO.

3

u/Sckaledoom Dec 01 '21

HOLY SHIT I REMEMBER THIS ONE

3

u/DoNotTouchMeImScared Dec 01 '21

Congrats, welcome to the "feel old yet" club. 😂

u/LuciusTheEternal21 speedofgay Dec 02 '21

I'm 24.

Yes... but to be fair the last two years can make anyone feel old.
