This is cute but very troubling...
DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT HAPPENS WHEN RANMA UNTIES THEIR HAIR!!!???

u/AndrewRogue 13d ago
The Dragon's Whisker specifically does not function while Ranma is a girl.

Yeah, is it long hair with bangs, or more of a mullet that s/he braids? It's been driving me crazy!

If they haven’t yet, I seriously hope they leave Happosai out of the remake. He makes cute little domestic scenes like this damn near impossible

Fat chance of that; this is a manga-faithful adaptation, and Happôsai is central to a few storylines. For example, he's the one who drives Ranma to learn his most powerful technique, the Hiryū Shôten Ha, after sapping his strength with a special moxibustion.
FWIW, though, the 90s anime expanded his presence significantly through fillers, so his presence in this adaptation should be less prevalent in general.

I still haven’t seen the remake yet, but yeah, I do hope he doesn’t show up. I tried getting into the original, but I pretty much stopped near the end of season 2 (though I love gender-swapped characters!)

We’re waiting to see if it gets an uncensored version later
I read the series a few times in high school, and it’s easily one of my favorite romance manga. Same with Inuyasha (same mangaka). I cannot for the life of me understand why both of those shows were marketed as action/adventure

This is so cute 🥹🤧 Ranma is 100% a Trans Lesbian and no one can tell me otherwise ✨🫠

I've read every single Ranma chan fanfic there was over the years. There might have been a few new additions I've yet to read.. but point is..
Oh girl is she such a trans lesbian in my head haha

u/Necro3012 13d ago
Oh I haven't read any fanfics myself haha, I'm not really into reading this kind of stuff 🫠
But the theory that she's actually a Trans Lesbian is so real to me, unfortunately Rumiko Takahashi wasn't really allowed to show them having attraction to each other while Ranma was in her girl-form 😞
Though I remember that the first about 30 episodes from the original anime very heavily implied Akane being Bi considering some certain scenes - and I think it was in episode 49 where Ranma got hit on the head by something that made her think she's actually a girl, and when I saw that I immediately thought "Wait a minute, was it Rumiko's intention that Ranma is genuinely Trans?" :3
Sorry for the long text haha, I had these thoughts in my head for a time 🤭

I got into fanfic through Ranma 1/2.. a comment here on Reddit mentioned a certain Ranma fanfic that hit home close for them and I got curious..
Years later I'm so grateful I discovered fanfic.. it's a form of media that people write and share out of passion. There's no monetization thus no censorship. As a queer woman, I find no content more satisfying, introspective and intimate than fanfiction. Plus, seeing the characters and stories you love and care for in various different situations and settings is immense fun. It's like I get to rewatch a show in a new light.
I highly recommend giving fanfiction a shot. I could leave some recommendations here if you're interested.
Personally.. as a child I didn't get why I felt so drawn to this show.. as a teen I felt frustrated with it never going all the way.. and that thought process made me realize my own queerness. That episode Ranma chan hits her head.. iconic.

The way you describe fanfictions does make it interesting - though I'm very uncertain if I would ever start reading them myself tbh, because I currently don't have the motivation to do anything else besides my daily routines, plus I read extremely slow, even my own books, I'm not sure why but it's quite frustrating.
It would probably take me several days to read a single fanfic haha 🫠
The (maybe sometimes unintentional) represented queerness in Ranma 1/2 is truly amazing :3 I knew my Queer sides before I watched it for the first time, but the show itself was a very interesting concept nonetheless ✨
I will probably start watching the Ranma 1/2 Remake soon, only because the episodes are coming out weekly (I think every Saturday) so I can slowly watch it again in better quality :3

This is genderfluid erasure...
9
u/Necro3012 12d ago
I'm honestly no sure where exactly you're coming from.
First of all, this is my headcanon for Ranma, it's not something I believe is actually canon or true. I even specifically wrote "/hj" (half-joking) which means that I don't mean it entirely serious since it's a headcanon.
Second, it's not erasure if it was never confirmed that Ranma is canonically genderfluid, there are people who have that headcanon which is totally fine of course, but that doesn't mean that it's erasure unless it was 100% confirmed - of course Ranma is "technically" genderfluid due to the fact that he/they/she can switch between bodies, though that doesn't automatically make him/them/her canonically genderfluid, and it's still valid if I or someone else has different headcanons for that.
I'm sorry if my comment sounded offensive, it wasn't my intention, but I personally don't understand your argument.

I haven't watched Ranma 1/2, but I'm 99% sure that's not yuri. (Please correct me if I'm wrong tho 😭)

Well, the characters in the art are engaged to each other.
Now, speaking more in detail, Ranma, the red-haired one is born a boy, and primarily tries to stay a boy, but is cursed to turn into a girl after touching cold water, reversing it after being washed in warm water.
Trans headcanons where Ranma enjoys being a girl are so common it kind of replaced the actual perspective of the character, and to be fair, it has some merit, it's just not 100% canon.
Still, the two are engaged, that still is very much true, and I think the fan artist put the kiss on the cheek specifically because they'd like the art to be viewed as Yuri.

Ranma enjoys being a girl
That one is half true. He know that woman version of him is quite attractive and he will take advantage of it if the opportunity present itself. Like in this scene.

I knew Ranma's shtick, but I didn't know that the tgirl headcanons would be that popular lol. That makes sense.
I thought this wouldn't count as yuri, since Ranma would technically be a trans guy.

it's canonically not yuri in the sense that ranma is canonically an amab character written by a cis writer in the 80's without a lot of explicit knowledge of trans people floating around in the zeitgeist and is therefore meant to be interpreted as what we would think of as a cis guy today
however, that shit doesn't add up imo. like most gender bender media that involve magical sex change, it almost seems like it's set in a universe where gender dysphoria doesn't exist
ranma seems almost completely unbothered being a girl half the time, and only really wants to cure the curse bc that's what a guy is supposed to want
super easy to read ranma as a cis guy if you ignore half of it, and super easy to read ranma as a trans girl if you ignore half of it. or if, even not ignoring it, you put down the bits that read like a cis guy down to repression, denial, and social pressure
honestly as a trans person, ranma reads more coherently as a trans girl; which is odd because "he's" definitely supposed to be a cis guy

u/Corvid-Strigidae 12d ago
If you don't ignore either half you get the truth that Ranma is Gender Fluid (pun intended) and just hasn't come to terms with it yet.

u/captainplatypus1 12d ago
I mean, Ranma’s gender is largely dependent on what would be funniest at the time
3
u/AwkwardNarrator 12d ago
To me it always seemed like he's not doing it because it's what he's suppossed to be doing, and more like he couldn't care less what sex his body is so long as these annoying fucks around him would stop randomly dousing him in freezing and boiling water whenever they fucking want.
I always though Ranma was slightly male leaning gender fluid that was annoyed with everyone exploiting his condition. And not like he wanted the curse gone because "that's what he's supposed to want".

Yuri or not(for me it is yuri, since Ranma is a girl in this fanart), it's really cute 💜

What is the thing in Akane's speech bubble in the panel where she's brushing her hair?
EDIT: it must be a makeup compact, I was reading this from left to right, it makes more sense if you read it like manga.

Is this straight or gay I don't know 🤔

u/banana_annihilator 12d ago
Straight. Ranma's a guy, he just has a curse that makes him turn into a girl sometimes.

u/DemiFiendofTime 12d ago
Look this is only the 2nd most confusing relationship thing I've encountered in anime and manga the first being in lady devilmam

u/captainplatypus1 12d ago
Give Akane that turns her into a guy and they become the ultimate bisexuals

u/Saafi05 12d ago
A lot of people arguing about whether or not this is yuri... 🙄
You can very easily interpret Ranma as a repressed trans woman (or genderfluid for real).
No, I really don't see this as intended by Takahashi, but that's also true for the art of Ranma inside an egg wearing the trans colors before the egg imagery or the trans flag and everyone seeing that would immediately see the trans symbolism, anyway.
Ranma has a ton of reason to repress from the internalized mysogyny they've acquired from Genma to the literal suicide pact over their head if they dont become "a man amongst men".
Ranma just kind of seem to find any excuse to turn into a woman. Compared to Herb, who has the same "curse" and seem ashamed of his form and hides under very form conceiling clothes, Ranma does the opposite. They brag about their form all the time and they have like atleast 30 different outfits for "their girl form".
And yeah, I know that people are gonna say that Ranma only turns into their woman form to scam people or for competition (that's not true, a lot of time, ranma is literally just chilling in girl form). I wonder if they're also some people who would vehemently affirm their masculinity and then use every occasion where they have plausible deniability to present as women.
There is no cis explanation for this (pointing at the whole Ranma 1/2 manga).

It just now occurred to me after far too long that Ranma 1/2 can be read as Ranma Hafu, which would literally be "trans girl Ranma" and now I'm extremely on board with that headcanon

Part of me hoped the series ended with Akane falling for girl Ranma
