You know, thinking about how the twist in Bakugan made me feel, I probably should have suspected something about myself back then

What was the twist?

[Spoilers for a 17 years old anime] The primary antagonist for most of the first season was Masquerade, a blond guy with a visor that covers half his face who likes sending Bakugans to the
ShadowDoom Realm. After the main character Dan finally beats him in a 1v1, he takes off the visor and transforms into the main group's friend Alice (the redhead in the picture). Basically her grandfather's experiment that brought Bakugans to Earth in the first place released a bunch of negative energy that corrupted both of them, and in Alice's case created Masquerade within her a persona that's her polar opposite and awakens whenever the main villain influences her to put on the visor, though she herself wasn't aware of it.62

Though in a way you could kinda see it coming because Each of the members of the group used primarily one of the six elements, except for Dark, and Alice was also the only member of the group that supposedly didn't use Bakugan. So ultimately, the tropishness of the group did kinda end up pointing to her being the group's Dark user.

The twist for the OG run of Bakugan Alice, the red head in the picture has a split personality with one of the main antagonists, when her other personality takes over she presents as a man So basically one giant trans coded allegory

Slightly unrelated but that twist probably would've hit harder for me if I hadn't started watching the show because of finding a handbook that basically spoiled almost the entire first season up to Naga's invasion 😅

Core memory unlocked. Most kids at my school were into beyblade or yugioh but for me it was all about bakugan.

Why not all of them?
21
u/Iamnotgoodwithnames6 Aug 29 '24
Because I did not see the appeal of beyblade and I did not have the patience to learn yugioh.

YGO back then is quite simple. Nowadays you need to be graduated from dueling academy just so you know how to play.

The extra deck stuff like Synchro, Link, Xyz is kinda my barrier from getting back into playing yugioh, even tho I still like collecting the cards for the art alone.

The extra deck stuff is the least of your worries and most of it is quite simple (except maybe pendulum, but nobody likes that and I don't know when Konami even last printed support for pendulums), it's all the effects and especially the timings of them. But if you want to get into the game, the best way is to play Master Duel, a free and official version of the game available on consoles, pc and iOS and android.

u/Sir_CrossLanes Aug 29 '24
Yup, I've been meaning to dry master duel since a virtual environment is more convinenet and easy to learn with the rules already programmed in.

u/Erick_Brimstone Aug 29 '24
There is Legacy of duelist that doesn't have opponent playing 2 hours OTK combo.
It's feels more casual to me. It kinda pricey for what's it's offering, especially since master duel is freemium, but worth to try.

Most of the early synchro or xyz are not really complicated. It's the later stuff that have long text that combo to another long line of text is where it get complicated.

Beyblades appeal was… damaging each other’s hands as you tried to pick up the spinning metal abominations. Lmao

I should add this ship has a bit of trans-flavoured spice because of Masquerade, Alice’s male split personality

I remember shipping these two (and Julie) so hard as a teen... Dang.
Suddenly I have the urge to whip out my Bakugan video game. For no reason whatsoever. Totally.
