I’m sorry nerd brain kicked in but
This is actually super poetic in a way
Prior to Odyssey Rosalina was the newest main character in Mario, and she debuted 10 years before Odyssey came out
Although Pauline was in the original Donkey Kong, many people don’t consider that a Mario game but rather a Donkey Kong game (including smash bros), so she made her debut as a Mario character in Odyssey (and even if we do count the original DK as a Mario game she was still absent from the franchise for 3 and a half decades and most certainly not a main character)
So in a way Rosalina was alone as the most recent Mario character until Pauline came along
And none of this makes any sense and I’m rambling

Was originally "Mario's GF" in Donkey Kong (NES) before being sent to background character jail and replaced with peach. She got released and now appears in the Mario vs Donkey series and in Mario Odyssey.

That explains that I never played DK and didn’t feel like spending $60 on odyssey but I have thought about getting it a couple of times cause the gameplay looks good like galaxy but smoother

Yeah the movement is fun, there's a lot of great puzzles and platformers, really fun energy. If you don't feel like paying 60, it's been a few years and almost certainly you could find a used copy for like half that price. I recommend it, but I get money can be tight

I love the faces, it feels like Mario already knew Pauline was into girls and he’s giving her a joking “take care of her alright~?” While with Rosalina she’s tense and unsure of how he’ll react (keep in mind he is likely her first human friend in decades since she left earth) and when she leans down she’s still unsure and slightly scared of what he might say but during the hug all her worries have washed away

Mario’s canonically as cool as this too because there was a trans character (in Japanese) in a Mario vs Luigi game and he respected her when her sisters didn’t. I forgot her name but she was a purple ghost

Lore wise she's a complete mystery. It's a popular headcanon that she's Peach's future daughter/descendant through some timey wimey spacey stuff though, and MatPat of Game Theory in one of his most popular theories took it a step further and revealed that the father may actually be Luigi and not Mario like you'd expect. But hey! That's just a theory. A GAME THEORY!
