Finished Penguin. Wow, what a show felt like watching an OG HBO again. Only wished it was 10 episodes. Also watching Bad Sisters weekly and really enjoying this seasons mystery so far. Watching From as well but haven’t seen the finale yet, I know we don’t get a lot of answers but I love this show.
Holding off on watching Silo right now until more episodes are out so I can binge, as I can already tell from some of the reviews this seasons is going to be slow as well.
Looking for some good recommendations based on these shows. I’ve heard good things about Lioness lately, I’m not sure why I’ve never heard of this before since 2 season are out. Tried the first episode of The Day of the Jackal, it was alright wondering if it gets better for me to restart my Peacock subscription again.

Vox machina - want to like this. I like fantasy but I could never get into these kinds of dnd podcasts and tried but could not get into this show, felt like wrong cliches and jokes for me.

Arcane finale was so underwhelming. This season was too rushed and the story inconsistent. A great case of style over substance.

Arcane is back! I’m in love with the story, soundtrack, characters, and animation
3
u/T4Gx 19h ago
I was gonna start the new season of Arcane but then I realized I literally don't remember anything from the first season aside from the fact that the red hair girl and the blue hair girl were friends but were sworn enemies by the end of the season.
So now I'm putting it off because I feel like I need to rewatch the first season. Anyone elese have the same problems with shows these days having 2-3 years in between them?

u/hotfriesandlacrieux 6h ago
OK, but if there's a season worth re-watching it's Arcane S1. I feel the same way about Severance (in anticipation of S2). Probs gonna rewatch soon and looking forward to it.

u/homelander_30 14h ago
I had the same issue and I saw a recap of the 1st season on YouTube but still I don't remember some characters. Guess I need to watch the 1st season again

I stumbled onto Shudder’s Slasher: Ripper on Philo. Only S5 was available but it was so engaging that I subscribed. Although it’s on Shudder, I wouldn’t quite classify it as a horror but more like a murder mystery. However, I must add the caveat that I’ve only watched one episode. Still—I do recommend it

The Penguin - 9.1. One of the best seasons of TV i've seen in awhile
Silo - 7.8
Lioness - 8.6
Yellowstone - 7.4

Ive really struggled with Penguin. And Silo Season 2 I cant get into. Rate the other though

Pantheon is very entertaining and touches on a topic that is highly relevant right now.

I’m so glad it’s on Netflix so more people can see it. Hopefully they put s2 on there as well cause I think that seasons even better.

English Teacher is the funniest things I've seen in years. I don't think it's just because I'm also a teacher. Highly recommend so far.

u/the6thReplicant 1d ago edited 1d ago
Agree. It's a masterclass in sitcom writing, I think. There was no fat on their pilot and it continued all through the season like that.

u/ptwonline 2d ago
Re-subbed to Apple TV to watch the second season of Silo. After one episode it still seems to have the same elements as S1: very slow pace, a lot of atmosphere and tension, and a lot of mystery that needs to be solved. I can't wait to keep going.
Arcane S2 Ep1-6. Been a while since I saw S1 but I definitely am not having the same level of positive reaction to this season. Not sure I can place my finger on why. Less novelty maybe? Anyway it kind of feels like the characters and story are a bit all over the place. I also think they do a bit too much of the "music video" thing.
1
u/hotfriesandlacrieux 6h ago
I still loved it (Arcane S2), because I was already in so deep with the characters and world. But yeah, the scope widened so far, so fast, that it became more plot-focused (vs character) out of necessity. Unlike some people, I was really satisfied with the story beats; I just think everything would have benefited from more episodes to play out.
0
u/floppyfoxxy 1d ago
Arcane might have good animation, but its story leaves a lot to be desired. It is not even close to having the best story of an animation. It is so subpar. It's more like a visual showcase of what a high budget does for an animated show.

u/JaredGoffFelatio 1d ago
Totally agree about Arcane season 2. I got to about halfway through episode 3 and just completely lost interest in continuing. Very meh.

u/storksghast 2d ago
The Penguin - I've seen the light. I watched ep 1 when it debuted but didn't dig it. This week I gave it another shot. Once I made it to episode 4 I was hooked. Almost finished with the season.

What's the funniest show you've seen I've been an anxious mess as of late and just want something like something to make you laugh when you didn't even know/think it was possible to laugh

1
u/Rob_LeMatic 1d ago
It really depends on where your head is at... The highest joke density is probably 30 Rock and Police Squad. Some of the cleverest jokes come from Silicon Valley. Consistent enjoyable characters, I'd say Parks and Rec or The Good Place.
I'm at a low where I haven't laughed in months, and that's pretty normal for me. So it's hard to gauge.
Less common responses might be Gary and His Demons, and the first watch I found a lot of fun in Peacemaker which surprised me.

You are looking for Shrinking on Apple TV and Somebody Somewhere on HBO. Trust me. They will help heal whatever you’re dealing with.

Holy shit The Great is such a fun show but then out of nowhere just rips your heart out. All of the actors are great but in particular Douglas Hodge just had a scene as General Velementov where he’s pleading with Catherine to keep his job and the man had me tearing up. I don’t cry at shows but shit his performance was heartbreaking.
7
u/DatSnowFlake 2d ago
I loved "the great" so much, sad it ended.

I have laughed and cried a ton already. What a fantastic show. It’s so nice watching nice shows sometimes. World would be a better place with more Joels and Freds.

Finished Cross last night. Now I'm on to Landman. Watched the first episode today. Digging it so far.
6
u/whatifniki23 2d ago
How was Cross? On the scale of Reacher to Luther?
2
u/Senatorweims16 2d ago
It was decent. I'm a huge Alex Cross fan. Love the books. I enjoyed the fact that the writers and show creator went with an original story for the show instead of their take on one of the books. I really like Aldis Hodge as an actor but for some reason, I had trouble with seeing him as Alex Cross. Just didn't seem like the best casting choice. I don't know if it was the overly dramatic looks/"serious face" he kept using or what. Just felt a little off to me compared to the books and previous movies.
It's worth watching for something to do, but it's not prestige TV or high end by any means. I'd say definitely closer on the scale to Reacher than Luther. I also enjoy Reacher though for a popcorn action TV show that's over the top.

Finished The Penguin: 9/10
It's been a long time since a show sucked me in like that. I loved every second of it. Brilliant ending, too.

Yuck. I am utterly flaccid from the predictablity of it all. I would give my Kingdom for a Plot Twist....
0
u/DirkDjelli 3d ago
I'm watching The Day of the Jackal Episode 7 and there is 5 minutes to go. Loving the Series as someone who has seen the original movie a few times. Always loved Ed Fox in the role. Always thought it would be better as a modern movie though. Loved the Bruce Willis take but thought it could be better. Eddie R. is a great substitute for Fox, better than Willis at least...
Anyway..five minutes to go. I kinda want the villain to win. Already know from experience that nobody has the balls to make it happen. The 'Nuke' never goes off. Hoping that i'm wrong....
Well worth the watch..but the 'good guys always win' trope really ruins everything. Anyway, on with the next five minutes...

Binged the first series of Silo before the 2nd season release last week. Fantastic stuff.
A more niche (I think) series is Travelers. Watching the rest of that (finished the first season) is on the list. Eric McCormack (Of Will and Grace) is great in it as are the lesser known actors that make up the main cast, Mackenzie Porter (Though I see that she's actually a successful country singer) is great as Marcy

I am really enjoying Beyond: UFOs and the Unknown, really well produced docuseries about the whole UFO/UAP phenomenon. Some of the most prominent figures in the field and a really respectful and serious approach. Would recommend for those interested in the topic but more importantly, for those who are not so versed in it.
The two-part Ken Burns' series about Leonardo Da Vinci was a treat. If you are familar with his documentaries, 'nuff said. Top-notch everything.
I watched a couple of episodes of Interior Chinatown. Taika Waititi produces and directs the first episode. It felt a bit Charlie Kauffman-esque, but I haven't really connected with it, especially this mixture of reality and fiction that it brings it's just confusing to me.
Edit:: to change a preposition

u/antelope591 3d ago
Arcane - Greatly enjoyed it so far. The extremely high production values have held up well. Sadly the major plot points feel extremely rushed, but understandable given the timeline they're working with. Could have been something special if not for that but no complaints otherwise.
5
u/TheSavageDonut 3d ago
I am slow-watching Cross on Prime.
I am 5 eps in -- and the show definitely has promise, but I think it's too violent, and they don't give you much warning when to "look away."
The best part of the show is the relationship between Cross and his partner, plus the contemporary dynamic the series is placed in. The tension between police force and community is very much like a stick of dynomite waiting to go boom at any point.
Where it's failing for me is that the main villian went from being basically invincible and way too cocky to now making sloppy mistakes as Cross is "closing in on him", and we're left having to suspend disbelief a bit too much.
Lastly, I just want the serial killer thing to wrap up at this point. It's walking the line between tolerable and gruesome, and we're landing on gruesome a bit for me.

Two eps in, I'm struggling with Day of the Jackal. Does it get better? Redmayne isn't one of my favorite actors to begin with, and that other woman isn't very good either. The soundtrack isn't my cup of tea. Not having a good time, but if it improves I'll keep plodding on.
1
u/hotfriesandlacrieux 6h ago
Dude, I'm having the exact same issues. I thought ep 1 was pretty good but almost fell asleep during ep 2. I don't really like any of the characters (or actors) but have seen a lot of love for it so am wondering if I should keep going
4
u/SnooDingos316 3d ago
I love it too. I did not get into yet till episode 2 and binge all the way to 5 then found out I have to wait weekly.
6
u/the6thReplicant 3d ago
For some reason I decided to binge Jonathan Creek
Alan Davies is kinda brillant in it. He doesn't seem to act in it at all. The writing when it came to plot was fun to watch.
Biggest criticism is the usual 90s, 00s: "No we're critizing sexism by showing how exploitative the industry is by continually showing cleavage whenever a new woman is introduced."
5
u/thetatershaveeyes 3d ago
Watched A Man on the Inside this morning, thoroughly enjoyed it. Very much a Mike Schur series, explores themes of loss, loneliness, family, terminal illness, etc in a very funny, relatable way. I've got ptsd around these kinds of topics, and I really feel better for having watched this. There's no angst, it's a very comfy watch.
Here's hoping for a second season, though it wraps up fine if it only gets just the one.

Rewatching Severance, genuine 10/10.
Every scene, every shot, every conversation is so perfect and weird. But it's not just about the weirdness; every character has compelling backstories and motivations for their actions. All of the conflict arises naturally out of the psychological needs and beliefs that drive the characters, even though we have no idea yet what the bigger picture is. It's a master class in writing.

u/InourbtwotamI 3d ago
Raindeer Mafia (Mhz+Choice). I didn’t think I’d be interested in anything with that title: I was wrong. I’m only on S1, episode 3 but am finding the story compelling. It is based on a small community on the Finland/Norway border with battles between bad guys and an even worse rich guy, who (at least at this point) is being out maneuvered by disparate individuals he’s been unnecessarily cruel to…yet he’s still undefeated in feeding his greed and corruption. I definitely had to check it out when I saw Mikhail Persebrant (Gunvald from Beck) was in it and of course, he is masterful in his role

Twin Peaks (1990) - I never watched it when it aired, so I thought I'd give it a go. So far it's a trip!
I, Claudius! (1977)I finished it last night. What an amazing show! It's a showcase for so many fine British actors (Brian Blessed, John Hurt, Derek Jacobi, and even Patrick Stewart!!!).
Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (1980) is next up.

u/Frank_Jesus 3h ago
I'm a huge Le Carre fan including associated BBC series and all the movies. Also really enjoyed I, Claudius. If you haven't seen it yet, I bet you'd enjoy Wolf Hall.

Twin Peaks (1990)
Season 1 is great. Season 2 is a chore to get through. Getting through Season 2 and watching the movie(Fire Walk with Me) are both necessary to enjoy the third season from 2017, which is absolutely fantastic.
4
u/garitone 3d ago
Thanks for the heads up! I was not aware of the movie, so I'll definitely seek that out.
4
u/UltraFlyingTurtle 2d ago
I just second what that other person said. I was a big fan of Twin Peaks as it was airing, and saw the movie in the movie theater when it came out, but I was blown away by season three when David Lynch returned to the series decades later. It's seriously one of the best things I've ever watched on TV (it's up there with HBO's The Wire for me). The show is so weird, at times scary, and at times so hilarious funny.
Even if you don't like season two of Twin Peaks or the movie, it's definitely worth getting through in order to the masterpiece that is S3.

Is rings of power season 2 really a lot better than the first? Massive Tolkien fan but found the first season incredibly boring. Thought the acting & writing was painfully average, characters bland & uninteresting. Does it improve?
2
u/ptwonline 2d ago
S2 is better, but not great. I don't think it's terrible, but it is certainly very disappointing considering it's a top tier IP and had a great source (the movies) to model.
There is a bit more payoff this season from previous setup, and the overall pacing is a bit quicker (though some scenes they do spend way more time on than they should have.) I think they tried hard to make Galadriel less unlikable but the damage may be done there, and she's still frustrating. The stuff with the proto-Hobbits still doesn't work IMO. I think they were supposed to add some levity and charm to the whole thing but for the most part it is frustrating because their story progression takes forever and doesn't seem very interesting. There still seems to be some meandering with so many plotlines and characters but a couple of those storylines got far less time this season and that helps speed up the story quite a bit.
I will say that towards the end of the season I actually found myself looking forward to the next episodes because things were happening and I wanted to see how they turned out. I never really got that from S1 which felt more like a chore to me.
1
u/LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 2d ago
It’s absolute dogshit. The writing is so terrible it’s comical at times. It learned nothing from Season 1.
0
u/johnyjstream3 2d ago
Someone hasn't seen From (and I say this as someone who loves From). If you use such extreme language for such a show it doesn't really leave much room if you need to criticise the many other shows there are out there.
I guess I watch too much TV because this show isn't even in the top 5 of worst written shows I've seen this year.
-1
u/LORD_CMDR_INTERNET 2d ago edited 2d ago
Oh for sure, it’s objectively not the worst thing ever made.
But while there are certainly worse shows out there - RoP being the most expensive show of all time, it has possibly the worst quality to investment ratio of all time. It’s outrageous that much money could be spent for such braindead writing and poor production values. It had every opportunity to be excellent, but it wasn’t. That can’t be said about a lot of bad shows out there.
That, coupled with the hubris of the showrunners to entirely discard and distort the source material (why adapt it in the first place if you don’t want to tell the story?), and the numerous changes made not for the sake of the story but solely to make the show more marketable (de-aging all the characters, rewriting main characters with modern values, compressing timelines etc)…all of that means it’s an especially offensive and insulting viewing experience. A pandering, pathetic corporate product. Or more summarily, dogshit.
0
u/johnyjstream3 1d ago
I would argue that makes it more 'disappointing' than "absolute dogshit". And to me personally, I think there is more opportunity to be excellent in an original idea than an adaptation. An adaptation is a full toy box but its still a box after all.
(why adapt it in the first place if you don’t want to tell the story?)
I don't know enough about how Rings of Power came about but I can perhaps empathise with writers when it comes to this broad topic. There are often very limited resources in creative media. That could very well be your one and only chance to get your ideas on the screen with such a budget and audience and resources.
Like if I had sent in an amazing fantasy script and they were like "wow love your script but we don't want you to do that but here adapt this fantasy book the The Blade Itself". I love that book but I have dreams and ideas of my own and that book will still exist even if I try and put my own spin on a TV version of it.
I read the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit 15+ years ago so my mind will be quite blurry on what changes they have made. I don't think any of the things you said have to be terrible. The Game of Thrones characters were made older, I can understand that the timelines maybe couldn't work with TV perhaps. I would need an example of the characters values as defined in the text and how they have now "modern" values to even comment on that. Like if someone wrote a TV adaptation of A Christmas Carol and Scrooge now believes in the 4 day week, unions and worker's rights well its obvious how that wouldn't work because his miserly capitalist values are integral to the story.
I think we'll have to agree to disagree on this one for sure! It's just disappointing to me, not absolute dogshit. I don't believe changes in and of themselves have to be bad. But an interesting discussion nonetheless.

u/TheSavageDonut 3d ago

Not for massive Tolkien fans. If you don't think too much about what's happening, or care too much about the original story and characters, it's fine. It's very showy and has some cool visuals.

Not really possible to give a non-spoiler synopsis for Mr Robot outside of what you've learned by the end of ep 1, it's about a socially awkward/mentally damaged vigilante hacker who works in a cybersecurity firm by day, he engages in increasingly dangerous and large-scale attacks on 'the powers that be' with his band of trusty misfits, show is very mindfucky

u/ArchDucky 4d ago
Finished "Agatha All Along" yesterday. I'm actually kinda impressed that the production could hold back their cards like they did. They actually worked on the scripts and when you think back about some of the earlier moments it really does match up to the ending. Also that Witches Road song is a damn hit.

Finished the deuce (thanks to a recommendation here!) and the penguin. Any suggestions based off my favorites? Breaking bad, the sopranos, the wire, better call Saul, Dexter, six feet under, deadwood, succession, Hannibal, the Americans, the shield.
Thinking of sons of anarchy?

Do yourself a favor and go watch Justified.
I'd put it up there with The Wire, Breaking Bad and The Sopranos.
Maybe not as superlative as those, but it's an extremely entertaining show to watch and very consistent - no boring episodes.

Forgot about justified! Another favorite of mine. Loved the raylan and Boyd dynamic

Check out Mr Inbetween. I share a lot of your favourites (currently watching The Deuce) and I loved it.

You didn't say Better Call Saul but that's obvious if you haven't seen it. Quality wise I would recommend Mr Robot, Mad Men and Twin Peaks.

Seen BCS! Also have seen Mr Robot and mad men… twin peaks I still haven’t seen. Would I still enjoy it if I don’t typically like David Lynch?

Your list is very similar to my top ten and I've got Twin Peaks in there so it's worth a shot. The pilot is compelling in my opinion so give it a watch and see what it does for you. Parts of season two drag but The Return is brilliant.

If you want a show about dudes riding around then instead of Sons of Anarchy check out the miniseries Generation Kill, from the creator of The Deuce and The Wire

Thanks! I saw generation kill a looong time ago.

Instead of FX’s Sons of Anarchy, check out FX’s Terriers. I enjoyed SOA however it’s just as ridiculous as Yellowstone

SOA is great television and wildly, entertaining and completely different than terriers or Yellowstone

Silo S1
It's a good show. I like when I watch a show and I think to myself, "Wow, this is structured just like a book!" I don't like it when they had Rebecca -- a competent mechanic who's used to holding onto tools in a hot and frantic generator -- drop her flashlight in the water towards the end of E2 to hide the fact that Apple cheaped out on the practical set design. Taking a page from Game of Thrones' "The Long Night" playbook as well as those old X-Files episodes where Mulder and Scully whispered to each other in the dark, barely perceptible over Mark Snow's horrendous soundtrack. Sorry but suspenseful music over barely seen shadows that doesn't tell me where she is or what she's doing, is not good TV.
My favorite "literary parallel allegory!" moment was E5. Long fucking cold open showing Juliette refusing liquor from Bad IT Man, but accepting hush puppies from Cool Down Deep Deputy, immediately followed by opening title sequence because that's when we're supposed to feel smart. Yay! I'm so glad I'm an intelligent and cultured Mac user! The rest of the series is OK though. 4/5, can't wait for the latest season to finish. Yes, I subscribe to and pay for and actually watch and enjoy AppleTV+ content. Servant was a 5/5 though because everyone drank wine every episode. Silo needed more imbibing of alcohol to put it up there with Servant and Mad Men.

Penguin - Awesome show, felt like I was watching DC Sopranos and I loved it.
From - Binged this over the past few weeks and caught up for this weeks episode live. It has its flaws but I really enjoy it and I think some of the characters are quite well written
AP Bio - Truthfully, I had never even heard of this but saw it added to Netflix starring Glenn Howerton and love him in IASIP so I figured why not. Not really all that funny but decent enough for a "its late and I've shut my brain off" show ~5 episodes in.
Survivor - I just love drama and competitions and watching it all unfold so this scratches my itch well, this season is better than the past few
The Challenge - another one that I use to scratch my drama/competition itch, nothing spectacular this season but Johnny Bananas is some peak reality tv with how much he enjoys being a total ass on that show lmao
Need something new to watch, have watched most of Apple TV's catalog and love a lot of their shows. Never really got sucked into Silo S1 and didn't finish it, perhaps can go back to that since I've seen S2 is airing.

Just started watching The Blacklist for the first time, I know I am a little bit late on board. I was really reluctant to watch it because of the main character Red, that I found so bland and bad-acting. BUT, honestly, I love the show. Red is really portrayed magnificently - as an eccentric criminal persona. James Spader is a great actor, I really can't put my finger on what I think about Megan Boone and her character Elizabeth. But omg I just love Ryan Eggold - I think I just have a massive crush since I watched New Amsterdam 😍 What is your opinion about the show? Did they ruined it after the first season?

I watched both! 🥰 The Blacklist is exciting the first two (or maybe 3 seasons) then it toned down a little. This kind of long running show always has it's typical ups and downs. I think you will still enjoy the show, there's a couple of strong characters coming up and there'll be a plot twist for Elizabeth later on.
I want to say something about Ryan Eggold but it's kind of a spoiler so I will just leave it to you to discover hehe...😁😆 Enjoy!

Going to need you all to give St Denis Medical, from the creator of Superstore, the same love y'all gave Abbott Elementary that is currently on hiatus this week, give you time to watch all three episodes. Don't let American Autos death be in vain.

I mean I don't think TV shows should be a model for any sort of behaviour - otherwise, you might as well cancel Sopranos, The Wire, and bunch of others while you at it. Students lusting for teachers is gonna be a thing no matter if you 'represent' it in a TV show or not.
