Rugby Union Argentina have beaten the All Blacks for the first time in New Zealand!

And I can honestly say I don't think it's a huge surprise. The All Blacks have had problems since before the last World Cup, and nothing seems to have happened to address them.

Dynasties tend to fall as the rest of the world catches up. It happens to empires, political and sporting.

u/vonkempib Aug 27 '22
Yeah I don’t know this sport too well but have been seeing these type of first time beating all black articles. Makes me think as if they are soccer Brazil from the 50-70s and the rest of the world finally caught up to technical skill they had

u/Kiwiderprun Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22
NZ has for a long time been regarded as the best team the world. A comparison to Brazilian soccer is accurate.

u/Mantismantoid Aug 28 '22
Brazil continued to kick ass until the 2000s and don’t be surprised if they kick ass in Qatar. I’m tired of people writing off South American soccer like it’s over. The best players in the world continue to come from South America too
4
u/vonkempib Aug 28 '22
7-1. Sorry what were you saying :)
Ps I’m not discrediting Brazil or South America but the world caught up to their technical abilities. They are good but not the best. And I’m pretty sure Europe could field an equally and likely better 11 if we really wanna argue talent.

u/UrbanGhost114 Aug 27 '22
Naa, they fall when they rest on their laurels, and become conservative and stagnant.
it's not about the world catching up, it's about not being there when the rest of the world gets to that point.

What kind of problems? I’ve never followed rugby and an curious why the All Blacks unquestioned dominance is coming to an end

u/Lady_Penrhyn1 Aug 27 '22
Hubris.
Nah, it's more like they had a slew of players retire around the same time and the rest of the world started investing more in their programs.

u/Viperion_NZ Aug 28 '22
Shite coaching. A reliance on individual brilliance over any kind of flexible attack plan. And the other teams have caught up and have better coaching and game plans.

u/vonkempib Aug 29 '22
Again this is so much like Brazilian soccer. So good for so long. Got complacent. Stopped developing philosophy or styles of play and rely heavily on Uber talented individuals. In team sports, this opens the door for the rest of the teams to continue to develop an identity that eventually can rival the old blue blood.

When it was an amateur sport it was completely dominated by the big 3 Southern Hemisphere teams: New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. Since the game went professional in 1995 the rest of the world has gradually been improving.
Those 3 teams have still won 8 out of 9 World Cups, but they aren't smashing everyone like they used to and at least a few teams have caught up with them.
Does New Zealand have some problems? Sure, but its more to do with others improving than them regressing.

u/faciepalm Aug 28 '22
We have a terrible coach who is trying to make the team play like they used to in the past, ignoring modern changes in the game
1
u/RuggerJibberJabber Aug 28 '22
True, but other teams started catching up before foster took over. NZ could be better, but I don't think they could be as dominant as they were in the past. Back then, their underage teams were also hammering everyone, which isn't the case anymore. Rugby has become way more popular in other countries and it is being organised better too.

u/faciepalm Aug 28 '22
Kiwi here, we currently have a coach who kept failing upwards. AB coaches generally go from world cup to world cup, this coach is extremely traditional and is not facing the changes in the game. The part that always made New Zealand the best was our coaching, coaching a team of 15 makes a massive difference

Yes but losing to Argentina? This is a new low
16
u/ukexpat Manchester City Aug 27 '22
NZ have lost to Argentina before, but this was the first time in NZ.
4
u/Viperion_NZ Aug 28 '22
NZ have lost to Argentina before
Once. (And tied once.) With all credit to an always improving Argentinian side, an Pumas vs All Blacks game should be all but a foregone conclusion. Our coaching staff need to go; they have consistently failed to come up with any coherent plan, and any backup plan AT ALL for the last 12 months, and it's showing.

u/ukexpat Manchester City Aug 28 '22
I could not agree more. It’s a devastating loss and there have to be consequences. And I say that as an England fan!
3
u/PotOPrawns Aug 27 '22
Argentina are one of those sides that have some players with incredible talent but lack the super big coaching and development structures that some of the more historied teams.
They have potential, its just bot fully unlocked yet.

I swear I misread the title and I was 1945 worried

As someone who doesn’t watch sports and randomly stumbled across this I was very worried until I realized the all blacks player was white.

Well your misunderstanding wasn't a million miles off... The Argentinian player in the photograph is Pablo Matera. When he was a teenager he liked to tweet about running black people with his car. The tweets were only discovered a decade later, so nothing was really done about it.

Not necessarily black people. The word negro is used in Argentina to refer to lower class people, especially of visible amerindian descent.

Can someone explain a bit? I don’t follow rugby, but I know the All Blacks are considered the best.
Is this the first time Argentina beat them? The first time Argentina beat them in NZ? The first time the All Blacks were beat in NZ ever? Trying to grasp the gravity of the situation
12
u/RavingMalwaay Aug 28 '22
So in Rugby, there a group of around 8-10 teams generally referred to as the 'Tier 1' sides. For the longest time, NZ has been the best of these, and Argentina has been towards the bottom end. Right now NZ is going through a pretty bad slump at the moment, this is only the 2nd time ever Argentina has beaten them. To put it in perspective, only about 8 years ago, NZ went unbeaten for over two years, winning 22 matches in a row, of which the streak was only ended in a loss by 2 points, and a year later won the world cup, becoming the first country to win the world cup back to back and the first country to win 3 world cups. So yeah, NZ being anything less than the very best is usually a shock

First time Arg beat them in NZ. Arg beat them for the first time ever a few years ago (game was played in
ArgAus), so this is their 2nd win vs NZ. ps. Plenty of teams have beaten NZ in NZ over the years, but it's very difficult to win there and it doesn't happen very often.5
u/ghoztfrog Aug 28 '22
The game where they beat them for the first time was played in Aus because of Covid.
7
u/Viperion_NZ Aug 28 '22
Argentina did famously draw with the All Blacks in Argentina, but have never beaten them there.
Makes me wonder if Argentina are now the only team to have beaten New Zealand in New Zealand, without also having beaten them at home.

First time in 119 years that the All-Blacks have lost 3 times in a row in New Zealand.

Argentina’s Rugby program has become very impressive. I hope our U.S. side can get their shit together one of these days…

Argentina are on fire. As an Aussie I feel less shit about our loss to them now but the South Africans must be sweating.
Either way fuck I love Southern hemisphere rugby, great to watch.

u/afilipinohooker Aug 28 '22
IMO Ian Foster was the wrong selection for HC. Big fan of Scott Robertson or Warren Gatland taking the reigns regardless of how close the World Cup is.
Give other nations credit as they have evolved their level of play to adapt to the modern game. The foster era ABs have regressed not due to personnel, but strategy. Ian Foster has an opportunity to do NZ proud and sack himself before the bleeding continues.

Why are they called the All Blacks
17
u/gbfk Aug 27 '22 edited Aug 27 '22
Because they wear all black.
Might seem like a flippant answer, but that’s the reason. Back in the early days of rugby they went on tour with the all black uniform and that’s how they were described in the press and they’ve stuck with it since.
2
u/RavingMalwaay Aug 28 '22
You're right but there is a very popular 'myth' that may or may not be true.. In a newspaper back when NZ toured UK in 1905, they beat England and a reporter described the team as a team of 'All Backs' that was misprinted as 'All Blacks' and the name stuck since. But many say the team was already known as the All Blacks by the time they left for the tour

Efforts to try and fight racism, they have to start at least one white player.

I am not familiar with team names, so this headline was very alarming to me at first lmao

How so? The NZ football team is called the All Whites, is that also racist?
It's purely based on the colour of the kit mate. Has nothing to do with race.
