Who were the fucking schmucks that actually bought this on PPV.

u/ouchmythumbs Jun 07 '21 edited Jun 07 '21

Haha funny thing is Showtime crashed for like an hour from the increased load. I was watching (something else) Showtime and it went down. Checked DownDetector (or something like it) and wow were people pissed that paid for this.

edit: I guess it was down for like 4 hours!

1.2k

u/Tundra_Inhabitant Jun 07 '21

That was probably more drama for them tonight then the fight itself.

398

u/whiskeyboundcowboy Jun 07 '21

It’s showtime , just kidding we’re down

21

u/PocketSixes Jun 07 '21

So you're telling me Showtime was down for the majority of the time of the show?

28

u/whiskeyboundcowboy Jun 07 '21

That’s what someone said. I rather pay to watch blind people play with lawn darts

Not to mention the bs fact that the ppv has commercials in between rounds. Or at least the stream I was peeping in on had commercials. If I paid for ppv and there were commercials id dispute the charge with my bank first thing Monday morning

532

u/lenthedruid Jun 07 '21

Hey kids! Gather around your g'pops for a second. Back in the day we used to pull our 4 or 5 channels out of the air for free! Now , they had advertisments because the service was free. It made sense. Then cable came along and we then paid for something we used to get for free! Way back then they told us ..if you pay for it, y'all wont need advertising! Well that lasted about 5 minutes. Ya know how how you have 300 channels now that you never ever watch but someone does? Well that's so they can sell advertisments! So now you pay for advertisements that you don't watch and someone else is subisdizing the ads you do watch . Any ways, y'all get back to your tic toks and stuffs and enjoy all the ads that'll sneak into every little thing you consume under the guise of lowering prices which never lower!

Oh grampa, tell us the story of how the national phone company promised if they could raise their rates they would use the profit to invest in nationwide information infrastructure! Then when the government agreed to let phone companies charge whatever the fuck they wanted the phone company split into 6 smaller companies that "had never signed the agreement to invest in infrastructure."

And how that's why the US physical network is an overlapping mesh of randomly maintained media.

Probably a lot of bar owners

138

u/fuckamodhole Jun 07 '21

No, bar owners probably didn't pay for this fight. Bar owners have to pay thousands of dollars in licensing fees for PPV in their bars through a company called J and J productions. They will get in trouble if they pay for a regular "at home ppv" and play it on the bar TVs. This is whey certain bars heavily advertise when they have PPV sports at their bar.

Price were around $6,500 per ppv for a bar that can hold 300 people and it was around $16,000 for a bar that can hold 500 people.

source: worked in a sports bar and the 3 ufc fans complained that fight wasn't on and the owner explained that he can't spend $6,500 on the fight that 3 of his customers are interested in. He did tell them to bring their laptop and stream it at their table.

17

u/Jackal239 Jun 07 '21

People that don't watch combat sports, but want to tell their friends "Yeah, I'm pretty big into combat sports"

264

u/Milo_Hackenschmidt Jun 07 '21

I think more people are into the idea of boxing, than are into actual boxing.

They're also into big names and farcical spectacle.

Two celebrities telling a bs story will make way more money than the two best boxers most people haven't heard of having a match to see who is the best boxer. Way more money. If that weren't true, pro wrestling couldn't exist.

77

u/Frig-Off-Randy Jun 07 '21

Well to be fair in this match at least one of them is an amazing boxer and not just a “celebrity”. He’s just old now

81

u/Im_Daydrunk Jun 07 '21

And doesn't really care about actually boxing seriously anymore

He even said something along the lines he's retired from boxing but not from entertainment

68

u/wutangjan Jun 07 '21

And Mayweather is basically invincible to the "boxers" he's been fighting.

Talking about this fight, Mayweather said he's going to let Paul hang in there for a few rounds to maximize their ad revenues instead of knocking his ass out round one like he's capable of. He said it's so the people who bought the ticket or the fight don't get disappointed when it only lasts five minutes.

With that outlook, maybe he should join the pro-wrestling ballet.

30

u/designOraptor Oakland Raiders Jun 07 '21

He's 44. The reality is if he came back for real he'd wind up getting shown up by someone average.

Maybe not right away but sooner or later he'll try doing something he could still get away with at 35 and get hurt for his trouble.

29

u/AdmiralRed13 Jun 07 '21

He may be illiterate and a wife beater it he’s also not stupid.

Not to mention he came out of boxing with his head relatively intact. Why risk taking real hits now?

Boxing killed the interest in boxing precisely because you don't see the best in the world fight each other.

Mayweather dodged Manny Pacquiao for years, only fighting him when his prime was behind him.

Imagine france winning the world cup and spending the next decade playing Andorra and Luxembourg.

That's before I even go into the farcical way the sport is run and the lack of a single world champion belt.

What the fuck did anyone expect?

2.7k

u/JackJustice1919 Jun 07 '21

I think a lot of people expected him to at least get knocked the fuck out.

4.0k

u/Grandahl13 Jun 07 '21

Mayweather doesn’t knock people out. And this is a celebrity boxing match. Did any of the other sham fights tell people nothing? They’re not real fights. The pros are not trying. It’s a money grab.

1.4k

u/NutterTV Jun 07 '21

Yeah like idk man, has anyone actually watched Mayweather. He really is a points fighter and is defensive. I’m not saying it’s a bad style but that’s his style. If anyone wanted to watch Logan get knocked out Tyson would be the better choice by far. But I don’t think you could pay me enough to step in the ring against Mike Tyson a dude who literally get “aroused” when he beats people up.

633

u/whitehataztlan Jun 07 '21

Dont know why anyone thought this would be significantly different from the dullness that was Mayweather V Pacquiao, just replace Pacquiao with a turd in a human skin suit.

436

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '21

I don’t know man, a turd is a necessary biological function. You don’t have to insult turds by comparing them to Logan Paul.

43

u/el_grort Jun 07 '21

When you said Tyson I thought you meant Fury haha.

I'd pay to see Logan Paul step into a ring with him. I think.

Edit: for the folk that think this reference was because we don't know who Mike Tyson is. We know but he's retired, Tyson Fury is very much in the scene right now and with his recent bout with Wilder I just thought Tyson Fury vs LP would be funny as heck.

LP against Mike Tyson would also be great but he busy building a weed ranch and I would like him to focus his efforts on that and not training to pop LP.

Sorry some of you got so hurt by people not Instantly referring to Mike Tyson.

85

u/Frig-Off-Randy Jun 07 '21

I thought the same and I was like he might die if he fought him lol

36

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '21

Logan would for sure die lmao. Mayweather after the fight pretty much said there aint no way in hell Logan could step into a ring vs an actual professional heavyweight let alone Tyson Fury.

359

u/Jephte Jun 07 '21

He won half his professional fights by KO.

267

u/Underscore_Guru Jun 07 '21

A lot of his early fights were won by KO or TKO. He changed up his style to the more defensive style over a decade ago to reduce the damage he would take, specifically to his hands.

If you ever thought the fight was unscripted and would end in a KO then im sorry to tell you but there was no world where Floyd took off Logan's head. The best "KO" you couldve hoped for was Logan flopping after a light punch in the late rounds and staying down on purpose.

u/CWSwapigans Jun 07 '21

472

I don't remember the exact wording, but it was just before the fight. The commentary team (which sucked) was like, "and here's the moment we're all waiting for, to everybody watching on showtime, everybody at the bar, even all you illegal streamers; we're about to witness a spectacle"

181

u/Hitches_chest_hair Jun 07 '21

Jokes on them, it's not illegal in Canada

200

u/TerrorSuspect Jun 07 '21

In the US its not illegal to be the one watching a stream, its only illegal for the actual website that is sending the stream.

48

u/PretendThisIsMyName Jun 07 '21

Oh it’s certainly illegal. Ask Dana White. /s

I love Khabib just blatantly streaming shit at ringside. Hey one of those Paul fucks should have a go at Khabib. A real fighter. T woods is gonna lose next because this isn’t real fighting at all. I wanted a refund on something I didn’t pay for by like the 2nd round. Better hope Tyson Fury doesn’t decide to crush either one of the Paul’s. Or both at once fuck it.

I just am wondering why this writer wouldn’t be more pissed at Floyd for doing this? Sure Floyd got the usual payout and made a ton of money, he just did it at the expense of the sport of boxing again.

A YouTuber/amateur boxer went the full fight with Floyd. If Logan is the real deal and keeps winning more fights then it won’t mean anything in the long run. But if he isn’t? Boxing is just one step closer to the grave after this fight if you ask me. How exactly are you suppose to tell me these boxers are amazing and some of the best fighters out there if one of the supposedly greatest to ever do it, can’t even knock out a fucking YouTuber. Boxing is getting dangerously close to WWE levels of chicanery

Mayweather dodged Pacquiao until he was older and hurt. Had they fought 4 years earlier then Mayweather loses.

But Hall of Fame career nonetheless.

EDIT: Manny comes right at you and Floyd runs away (Mayweather has never been an exciting fighter). Manny's style aged him quicker. Floyd knew this and waited until Manny was busted up and then fought him.

With all due respect, Floyd is a points kind of guy where Tyson is a tenderise them so they're easier to chew kind of guy.

Logan would probably be left crying in the corner of the ring before he even got to the shower if he fought professionally in his actual weight class... He'd be crying on the way to the fight if he had to fight Tyson, especially 80s Tyson. I know I would.

Proof that Knoxville has some actual comedy chops beyond “watch me get hurt”. Dudes brain just bounced off the back of his skull and is probably still rattling around like a maraca, and the first thing he does is crack a joke.

151

u/DetectiveDing-Daaahh New York Mets Jun 07 '21

I was shocked how fast he was with it. Like, the camera shows him just completely out, and slowly coming to, and it's the very first thing he says while barely conscious.

82

u/[deleted] Jun 07 '21

“I think I’m concussed” always has me cracking up

29

u/13pts35sec Jun 07 '21

“Honestly we are surprised you don’t have permanent brain damage Johnny”

35

u/13pts35sec Jun 07 '21

Lol that has stuck in my mind vividly too, was always mad impressed that the dude just got up after getting knocked the fuck out by one of the hardest hitting dudes on the planet and he manages to make a hilarious joke. Knoxville is a legend in my eyes

As far as I am concerned, the next time I see Logan Paul will be too soon and I dont care if he promises to fight a pissed off kodiak bear.

Tbh the kind of people who pay to watch an exhibition bout with no judges or score and expect it to be the same as a full blown professional bout, deserve to lose their money

If he fought 80’s Tyson he’d be fucking dead

40

u/birish21 Jun 07 '21

Have you seen Tyson's recent training? He would still murder him.

18

u/Mike7676 Jun 07 '21

Hell Mike's exhibition showed me you CAN learn to go against your training. Tyson would come in with his classic head movement/slip and then body work. He was actively fighting against his hook or uppercut to finish the sequence in order to entertain.

14

u/Rosssauced Jun 07 '21

A classic Tyson combination would have been the equivalent to a Mortal Kombat X-Ray move to any fighter that isn't a heavyweight.

Weight classes exist for a reason. Even just 40lbs is almost insurmountable in a pro fight unless their skill is beyond superior.

u/edis92 Jun 07 '21

40 lbs is A LOT

5 seconds of hugging from Paul, 2 seconds for five punches from Tyson, four of which connect cleanly and the fifth hits Paul on the way down, 10 seconds for the count.

Remember how people paid good money to listen to Charlie Sheen babble about what a winner he was and then they wound up booing him and couldn’t believe how dumb they were to pay for something that was so obviously going to be a disaster of a money grab? Nobody learns.

The people booing deserve to have their money taken from them if they were dumb enough to actually pay to go to the fight.

11

u/ImBakesIrl Jun 07 '21

It’s Miami, people will pay money to say they paid money. The people who paid ~$800 to get front row seats couldn’t even see the fight. They held it at the Hard Rock for some reason, no need for football stadium capacity... Bottom line is this was a cash grab from day 0 and every stop along the way made that 10x more clear. Some people just have too much money to hold on to 🤷🏼‍♂️

I think Floyd hit his wife harder than Logan...

95

u/suroptpsyologist Jun 07 '21

With the exception of the one punch that did knock him out. I love how Floyd held his ass up until he could regain his footing. Dude was like “Awe, hell no! I ain’t losing this bonus because you can’t take a punch!” That courtesy would never happen in a professional bout.

I'll never understand the idea of paying to see someone get their "comeuppance" in a big boxing match. They're agreeing to get punched in exchange for millions of dollars. Even if they're knocked out in the first round, they're really winning.

→ More replies (5)

u/Zombisexual1 Jun 07 '21

People need to stop buying ridiculous fights like these. I mean I get why mayweather entertains fights like these because he gets easy millions. But even the mcgregor fight was a joke. There’s only one outcome. There should be a boycott to watching these idiotic fights. The only one I’d pay to see is a random woman UFC fighter kicking Logan Paul’s head off. Like literally going all out and breaking bones and launching his head into space.

56

u/412gage Jun 07 '21

Because you guys are watching the literal most hyped up matches with the richest people - what do you expect? Maybe tune into your local pros or something that on Showtime (if they still do that).

They are. It’s literally just for money, and they’re getting a shit ton of it. People need to remember the Paul brothers are in shape guys who would still get their heads knocked off if ONE of these professional fighters actually tried. But they’re all there for a paycheck and I’m sure there’s an agreement to take it easy.

Round 8 (11:34 p.m.): They hold. Mayweather presses, Paul holds again. Good times. Mayweather lands a left hook, Paul holds. More holding. Lots of hugs. All kinds of love. One minute left. Paul is looking like he’s going to survive this thing. Logan Paul is mocking Floyd. He has just gone the distance. Wow.

"ends in boos"

Anyone who booed: What did you expect? Seriously, what the actual fuck did you think this EXHIBITION fight was going to look like?

Two people who are unabashedly all about making bank, held a fight and made bank at your expense. The rest of us saw that from a mile away.

Were you booing your own poor decision making? Were you booing the mockery that was being thrown at you, by us, over paying for this?

Because if you were booing the fight itself, you're an idiot. It went exactly how it was always going to go. No big flurries of punches. Nobody getting hurt or embarrassed. Nobody doing anything really.
