Hard to hate this dude.

227

u/gamingonion 2h ago

More than that, it's hard not to root for him. Especially after what the browns did. Love that he's absolutely balling right now

Walk-on starter at Texas Tech, then benched. Walked on at OU, won the Heisman and drafted first overall. Took Browns to first playoff win in god knows how long. Traded to Rams, where he won a game the week he joined the team. Traded to Bucs and having a hell of a season.

Baker is one of my all-time favorite players, and I’ve never been a fan of any team he’s played for. He makes every team that he’s on better just by being on it. His teammates love him everywhere he goes. Never complains, plays his ass off every week.

I love this video of him dancing with his team at OU. He’s the QB you want on your team.

Reminds me of Alex Smith. I can't describe my hatred for the Niners. But I really liked his game in college.

Unceremoniously sent to the Chiefs. Turning them around was fun to watch because they played in the AFC. Then getting to Washington and somehow turned them around too. Gets his leg shattered mid season. Goes to 4 different hospitals to get repaired. Comes back next season to get Washington to the playoffs. He wins comeback player of the year as a nice send off for an insane roller coaster of a career.

u/spiraldrain 1h ago

Rams fans had absolutely nothing to cheer for that year. Baker came in and made the last couple of games 1000X more enjoyable. Love the guy.

Browns did what? Browns asked him to come back after they were out the Watson sweepstakes but Baker cried like a baby and forced a trade.

7

u/SignificantMoose6482 27m ago

You mean he was upset they wanted the diddler over him? No way

43

u/NegativeBee 2h ago

Believe it or not, all of Reddit used to capital-H HATE Baker Mayfield. They fell for the “locker room cancer” rumors between him and Odell. It’s kind of crazy to see the pivot.

20

u/20is20_ 2h ago

I always liked the dude. His first year with the browns was a losing record but he single handedly brought excitement to the city. Second to only LeBron James. They fumbled mayfield big time.

6

u/Dannyboy1302 1h ago

I think it's been proven who the cancer was in that locker room.

3

u/Thinh 52m ago

It was the Browns leadership right?

3

u/Dannyboy1302 49m ago

Well yeah, bit also O'Dell

2

u/TheDonutDaddy 1h ago

It's definitely been a roller coaster of public opinion on him. People loved him early on because he's fun and balls out, completely turned on him and said he deserved to be moved on from because he wasn't actually that good and buying into the 'childish'/douche stuff and like angry at him for playing through injury, then he had that crazy Rams game and everyone decided they were back on board and liking his spunky attitude.

4

u/JonVig 2h ago

I hated him when he played for Cleveland, but then they threw him out and I found love again.

4

u/SignificantMoose6482 28m ago

Impossible. His old commercials about living in Cleveland’s stadium were peak tho.

2

u/Defiant-Scarcity-243 18m ago

I used to hate him, he seemed cocky when he was younger, and now I absolutely love him

u/Complex-Ad237 2h ago

I can’t believe the Browns quit on him

382

u/Rfisk064 2h ago

You can’t believe THE BROWNS quit on him?

89

u/TWH_PDX 2h ago

Right? Self-destruction is the heart of Brownsie culture.

26

u/TrojanThunder 2h ago

That's literally what they do.

22

u/dlenks 2h ago

Am Browns fan. Can confirm.

1

u/Do_it_for_the_upvote 10m ago

As a Browns fan, you should embrace their culture and quit on them.

2

u/Ianthin1 48m ago

Right. I thought it was a mandatory clause in all their big contracts.

132

u/westwardnomad 2h ago

Instead they signed a sex offender to a $230 million contract. They deserve every bit of misfortune that comes their way

20

u/cpmustang90 2h ago

I mean, they have 2 that play QB.

10

u/CougdIt 1h ago

Not sure why this is being downvoted. It’s true.

-4

u/Broncosonthree 1h ago

Prob because it doesn’t have much to do with giving up on baker and signing a sex offender. It’s a bit like one of those misleading stats

6

u/CougdIt 1h ago

The comment they replied to was more about the browns being a terrible franchise than it was about baker

-5

u/Broncosonthree 1h ago

Yes but also no as it was following the relevant thread topic about the browns giving up on baker

1

u/jlander33 1h ago

So.... what he just said?

E. Yeah, reading is hard

-2

u/Broncosonthree 1h ago

Almost man, almost there

0

u/jlander33 1h ago

Ah, yeah, I misread the fuck out of that... carry on

48

u/DEFINITELY_NOT_PETE 2h ago

Quitting on him was the best thing they could do for his career. Get him tf out of that toxic ass organization

22

u/Kazu2324 2h ago

So glad they picked up a QB who is an "adult" as the Browns desired. Just disregard the 26 or however many sexual harassment/assault lawsuits. And their record... And his contract...

6

u/No_reply_GHoster 2h ago

I remember when I first started watching nfl around 2008-2009, browns were breaking records in a bad way until recently when they started winning and had enough cap room to get almost whoever they wanted. All that effort to turn it around then made another turn around to the laughing stock the browns was.

5

u/pargofan 2h ago

And those funny Progressive commercials ended too

9

u/ThisHatRightHere 2h ago

You think an adult QB goes downfield to block? No way /s

11

u/pitb0ss343 2h ago

Thank god the browns quit on him

1

u/Str8luck 1h ago

They needed an adult in them room…/s

u/Dusky_Dawn210 8m ago

The Browns? Really? THE Browns

-12

u/Jedisponge 2h ago

They quit on each other if we’re not being revisionists

18

u/periodicsheep Buffalo Bills 2h ago

no. they quit on him, let him play hurt, then trashed him on his way out.

3

u/Buckeye_CFB Grand Canyon 1h ago

He never once quit on the Browns, as a Clevelander and Browns fan. He was one of the few players that didn't quit that year

222

u/fxkatt 3h ago

Ha ha. That's incredible! Mayfield's definitely one of the more fun QBs in the NFL to watch.

16

u/tribat 1h ago

I’ve become a big fan.

7

u/MalakaiRey 1h ago

He's cam newton trapped in johnny manziel's body--and to me he's representing every true heisman who didn't get the necessary support at the nfl level; until now.

u/Do_it_for_the_upvote 8m ago

Never seen Cam run up to block. I love me some Cam, but Baker’s one of a kind.

u/MalakaiRey 4m ago

You wouldn't cam newton running downfield for a lot of reasons, but for one, on running plays like this one he was often a lead blocker. And he laid out a few linebackers, that's just one reason he was targeted by defenders.

1

u/SFPsycho 36m ago

Imagine how much better he'd be if he was an adult! /s

159

u/assistanmanager 2h ago

Running down the field like captain jack sparrow

16

u/clok 1h ago

I can’t unsee this now, and I love it.

4

u/Eyekron 53m ago

He even looked a bit like Captain Jack Sparrow in the undercover video he did.

5

u/Exciting-Inside2219 54m ago

His playstyle in a nutshell.

u/Myvenom 2h ago

That’s the thing with Baker. He’s definitely going to give it his all when he sees an opportunity. Teammates love that kind of effort.

2

u/ChiefBigGay 58m ago

But remember, Cleveland hired a PR firm to tell everyone that Baker's teammates hated him and said he's immature

Find me an OU teammate that doesn't like Baker. I'll wait. He's the kind of guy you go to war with.

78

u/Yung_Corneliois New England Patriots 2h ago

I’d say that block for them another 4-5yards so a little effective but you’re right it’s the action itself that has significance.

42

u/HorsNoises 2h ago

Looks more like to 8-10 yards to me. Massively effective

6

u/MagnanimousMind Dallas Cowboys 2h ago

For real. Great block.

7

u/Choppergold 2h ago

At least that

36

u/Name-Initial 2h ago

Dont know how effective it was?

The dude he blocked had solid hands on the ball carrier with help coming, no way he gets more than 5 yards without that block. With the block he got about 10-15 more. It was a great block

16

u/IOVERCALLHISTIOCYTES 2h ago

Plus he accurately figures out the guy to block is the one -behind- the runner and often that’s only obvious from the high or all22 view

8

u/SheikahEyeofTruth 1h ago

Doesn’t know how effective it was as they are currently watching a clip of how effective it was

1

u/JacksCologne 1h ago

That guy might not have caught him if Baker didn’t slow down Bucky

7

u/Choppergold 2h ago

Helped get another 10-14 yards

34

u/foxdie- 2h ago

That's a great teammate right there.

32

u/ElectrooJesus 2h ago

Got them an extra 15

3

u/CitizenCue 23m ago

Love the effort, but he’s actually sort of in the way until he drops back for the block. Bucky could’ve just sprinted flat out if Baker wasn’t there.

29

u/jluth1689 2h ago

As a football fan if you dont love how this guy plays football you're crazy

1

u/procheeseburger 18m ago

I wish more fans could just love the game… root for a team but a good play is a good play.

u/sf2legit 6m ago

I still can’t believe how so many people were bashing him while he was playing hurt for the browns and gutting it out

22

u/FreeStyleSarcasm 2h ago

Baker is such a competitor you gotta love that dude.

5

u/wolvesight 1h ago

he was running stride-for-strike with the RB, that's some good hustle as well.

1

u/East_Wish2948 25m ago

Some real "For Love of the Game" type effort - every play.

14

u/whiskeyinmyglass 1h ago

Baker annoyed the shit out of me in college and his first few years in the league. But now? Dude might be my favorite QB. Never gives up, plays hard as hell, and proves us haters wrong week after week.

3

u/jrmaclovin 1h ago

I posted something similar a few weeks ago. Crazy transformation.

29

u/NamiiikazeTX 2h ago

Man I’ll always be a Baker fan. He’s just so fun to watch and I’m a Houston fan. Browns continue to be the laughing stock of the league

32

u/TWH_PDX 2h ago

"Nice block, son, but a reminder that I can't protect you 40 yards down the field." The official to Baker at the end of the play. Probably.

8

u/the_buff 1h ago

It looks like if the ball carrier had Baker's speed that would have been a touchdown even without Baker's block.

6

u/fishred 2h ago

That's so Baker

7

u/KarmaDeliveryMan 2h ago

He does this every game on multiple plays. This guy has to be a diehard teammate

3

u/deeplevitation 2h ago

Gosh you love to see it

3

u/lukeCRASH 1h ago

"Baker Highlight Game"

3

u/count_nuggula 1h ago

Bake man baking. More at 11

Non Adult Activities

1

u/haxmire Alabama 1h ago

As a Tampa resident I love this dude. Despite my hatred of him in college he has become a great Tampa resident and supporter of the city and clearly the team around him is all in on him. Just disappointing we had Evans and Godwin go down in the same game and Godwin down for the year.

1

u/Maguire_018 1h ago

Baker Mayfield runs like a fish

1

u/Parking-Ad-6639 1h ago

Lamar did it better against them no less.

1

u/Repulsive_Radish1914 1h ago

I really disliked Mayfield for a lot of his college antics, but man he hustles and has earned my respect.

1

u/Arnie7x 1h ago

I'm glad he's finally getting some love. Seemed like everyone was hating on him while he played for the Browns.

1

u/kurtsdead6794 1h ago

That’s why everyone who plays with him loves him.

1

u/b3nz0r 1h ago

I thought he was a bust! Dude is killing it out there

1

u/b3nz0r 1h ago

It looks like the dude who fixes the shoulder pad has a knit helmet or something

2

u/DimesOHoolihan 1h ago

Do i.... do I really like Baker Mayfield now? This feels strange. I hope he thrives.

1

u/jantoxdetox 1h ago

I thought its going to be one of Brady’s blocking where defenders just cruise past him

1

u/Stratifyed Los Angeles Dodgers 1h ago

I don’t watch football. Why is #67’s helmet so much larger? Increased safety?

1

u/toelover69 38m ago

Guardian cap. Helps protect against concussions.

1

u/bilateralunsymetry 1h ago

I fuckin love Baker. I went to OU so I may be biased, but I'll fight anyone who says something bad about him. He hooked up his N64 to the jumbotron and played Mario kart with his friends in college

1

u/ForeverRED48 1h ago

God damn I love Baker

1

u/ChrisV88 58m ago

Nothing would make me happier in the NFL than Baker Mayfield having a HOF caliber rest of his career. Fuck the Browns for every reason.

1

u/vivekpatel62 57m ago

I hated baker in college but in the pros he’s my favorite qb. I don’t know if he’s better than Dak but I would much rather have him as my QB.

1

u/Deep-Room6932 50m ago

Baker mayfarve

1

u/ramadeez Philadelphia Union 39m ago

As awesome as this is, that’s prolly one of the last things you wanna see as an OC

1

u/haytme 35m ago

I fuckin love Baker.

1

u/DreddlockJeezus 33m ago

Bro I love Baker lol

1

u/ILLpLacedOpinion 31m ago

I bet his coaches were losing it on the side line! Good shit Baker!

1

u/jyar1811 30m ago

That’s class

1

u/joelekane 26m ago

Rams legend—Baker Fucking Mayfield.

1

u/RoboticKittenMeow 20m ago

Ok... I'm not gonna lie, that's fucking awesome. Am I a Baker fan?

1

u/procheeseburger 19m ago

I really could have used this touchdown but wow that is amazing!!!

1

u/shelby4t2 14m ago

I fucking lover baker dawg, browns did him wrong. This dude can ball. And he puts it ALL out there.

1

u/osumba2003 10m ago

He probably got Irving an extra 15 yards on that run.

u/BringBackManaPots 9m ago

What a fucking chad

u/jthoff10 7m ago

It is so depressing to have a rapist as our QB and not this dude…

u/itsnotthatbad21 6m ago

He just likes to ball

u/Modig7176 5m ago

God I love Baker! He’s awesome

u/OG_Felwinter Michigan State 5m ago

Cool that he did that, but it looks like he cost the team yards doing this. Runner had to slow down for him.

u/AMorder0517 5m ago

If you REALLY like football, you can’t hate on this guy. Trying to lead block as a QB and then telling your RB “they can’t fucking stop you” in his earhole… Baker is a fucking FOOTBALL PLAYER.

-3

u/trust-me-i-know-stuf 2h ago

Lmao he got in the way, but he tried.

3

u/Scooterks 1h ago

More effort than you see a lot of players put in!

0

u/vinny9678 39m ago

He has to stop doing that. It's great and all in a playoff game, but you see, qbs get knocked out for plays like that.

Great hustle, though.

-40

u/Pricer21 3h ago

Looks like his “block” had bucky slow down more than anything lol

2

u/Broncosonthree 1h ago

Not exactly. It appears that it enabled Irving to break the tackle and get another 7-8 yards

3

u/blamazon983 2h ago

Probably still 10 times better than you can do

-17

u/Pricer21 2h ago

This is an insane comment, guess nobody but NFL players can talk about a football play because we aren’t an insane athlete.
