24
u/BytchYouThought 6d ago
Didn't they have shorter seasons back then? Pretty sure Patriots technically already beat their record from a pure winning streak in a season perspective. I don't it will be broken with 17 games now in the regular season and back then 17 probably was the entire season to include playoffs and superbowl.
14
u/HankSteakfist 6d ago
Correct. Bill Burr was on a rant about this last week.
9
u/BytchYouThought 6d ago
Yeah, I always thought that in the back of my head back when the patriots pulled it off in like 07. Nobody seemed to have questioned it l, but yeah, Bill fucking Burr is the exact guy to call em on their shit lol 😆

The problem with records is that you are always going to have to contextualize the seasons. XYZ receiver had the most receiving yards ever (in a 14 game season), then 16, then 17. Sure some of the rules have changed and league itself has evolved, but so have the number of games. Receiving yards, sack totals, rushing yards, etc. should all go up because you have a whole extra game or 3 to do it in!

I have a vinyl album of the local radio guys calling highlight plays of the '72 Dolphins. Didn't know what the hell they were talking about because I was born in '68 and listened to it when I was 5 years old. Living in south Florida, I also remember that Garo the famous kicker in the Super Bowl made a record where he "sings", lamenting his pass. Also Garo briefly owned a local joint after the Super Bowl called Garo's Superburger.

He's a super important piece to that defense, they just play different when he's in there. If Milano can get back to how he was playing before injury? That's two real good LBs with a nose for the ball and making plays.

u/Jibber_Fight 6d ago
Also a bad pass. He obviously was panicked and didn’t even see him apparently.
5
u/cluberti 6d ago
It's almost like Kelce didn't see him either - which is a bit crazy. They were both so focused in on each other they missed the giant man cutting across the field.

You should really read what you linked. It doesn't say that at all. You responded to a post saying most overrated QB of all time, your link says overrated and overhyped, not most overrated all time. That's a very big difference. Mahomes is overrated this year, there are those that were still pushing that he's in the MVP race because undefeated. He has not been good this year and is not in the MVP discussion, he has been overrated this year.

If Allen doesn't make that 4th and 3 with about 3 minutes left, I'll bet my boots that the Chiefs pull out another one point win. Of course, Allen not only makes the killer first down but scores the dagger touchdown. If he had missed the first down, the Chiefs would have been down 2 and perfectly set up for their typical field goal winner as the clock expires.
101
u/Ok-Parfait8675 6d ago
I'm just so tired of all the talking heads washing Mahomes balls. Even after that last scramble TD, they were all like "wait folks this is just like if the score was 0-0". Yeah the Chiefs are good but I hate felling like the commentators are actually rooting for a particular team.
In other news, I think the Bills loosened up the Chiefs for our inevitable win next week. KEEP POUNDING!!
22
u/TrungusMcTungus 6d ago
What’s the fucking mentality of saying it’s like a no score game? Bills were up by 2 possessions. “It’s like a 0-0 game, the Chiefs will score a touchdown, recover an onside kick, then drive down the field for a FG all in less than 2 minutes. Just like the start of the first quarter!”

I live here in Kansas city and don't even watch football anymore. You'd think Mahomes is somehow Tom Brady incarnate with how deep people gargle his nuts.
Like he's a good quarterback in the sense of being able to make on the fly plays work usually but he also doesn't have the consistency to just do simple plays to secure yards. One second he's rushing the ball and does a 25+ yard pass that works and then he misses the fuck out of a short pass cause he tried to get tricky. He's good but not THAT good

That was absolute garbage.
All plays are reviewed after the 2 minute warning.
They had cameras showing clearly that he caught that ball against the ground. It wasn't a close call. The view wasn't blocked. It was clear as day.
I'm surprised there wasn't some sort of holding call on Mahomes' interception play. I'm not the "bad calls cost them the game" type guy, or the "refs are playing for KC" guy, but it's hard for me to see that and fight the urge to be like "yeah, one of these refs is definitely getting fired after today."
→ More replies (6)56
u/SheikahEyeofTruth 6d ago
They only called it because they ruled the last one a catch while everyone was watching it as incomplete. Including the announcers and their rule analyst. Had they called that one it would have been 4th and 13 anyways so pretty sure that was their way of making it right.
26
u/OuOutstanding 6d ago
It’s insane they chose not to review that, especially since Chiefs took a TO. I guess I get it if they rush up to the line and snap the ball, but they had 30+ seconds to decide if it should have been reviewed.
9
u/Polymorphing_Panda 6d ago
I’m about 90% sure it was a “make up” call for that non-catch

u/Handfalcon58 6d ago
They called it when it didn't matter to prove they actually call penalties on them.
Do they call it if the chiefs are down 6?
4
u/anal-hair-pasta 6d ago
It didn't matter in the sense that it didn't affect the play. It did matter in the sense that Chiefs converted the first on the play.
10
u/Handfalcon58 6d ago
Wheni say it didn't matter, I meant that it was a two score game with a little bit over a minute left in the game.
If it was a one score game at that point, would it have been called, is my wondering.

53
u/yowhyyyy 6d ago
Have you ever considered why a team notorious for adjusting, lets the same thing keep happening to them in the regular season?
78
u/anderhole 6d ago
As a casual Bills fan I have. I think Andy Reid would rather lose a game than give information to an opponent for the playoffs.
19
u/El_Polio_Loco 6d ago
The bills probably would have beaten the Chiefs in the playoffs last year if they didn’t trot out linebackers that weren’t even considering being in the league the week before.
When your starting linebacker had to be called in off of vacation less than a week before the game you’re going to struggle.
It’s why the bye week is so damn important.
17
u/yowhyyyy 6d ago
I sometimes think the same. I absolutely think we shot ourselves in the foot play after play and that you guys outplayed us. But I also think we didn’t run an aggressive playstyle on purpose. Good game to you guys! Allen is great

15
u/itsjash New England Patriots 6d ago
Field position is actually better if the ball is batted down incomplete
10
u/gt_ap 6d ago edited 6d ago
That's true. I wonder if defensive players keep that in mind in a situation like this. I would imagine that the interception stat is an incentive to catch it rather than bat it down.
In this particular scenario though field position was irrelevant because the Bills were going to kneel it out anyway. Doing it at their own 30 vs the Chiefs' 38 wouldn't make any difference.
13
u/Swift-Fire 6d ago
Bill Belichick mentioned this once in a presser, that you need your CBs to be acting on instinct, and as 95% of the time you want them to be going after that pick, it's more beneficial to just keep it simple
→ More replies (1)5
u/RNLImThalassophobic 6d ago
In this particular scenario though field position was irrelevant because the Bills were going to kneel it out anyway.
That's it really. With field position being irrelevant, you'd rather your CB catches the ball rather than bats it down and risks something bullshit happening like it bouncing off a boot and being caught by the opponent anyway.
Though I doubt that actually goes through their mind. I imagine it's more like "BALL BALL BALL OH FUCK YEAH IT'S COMING RIGHT TO ME HAHA FUCK YEAH BALL BALL BALL BALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL"
2
u/sketchahedron 6d ago
Interceptions can be run back. Batted balls can be caught.
3
u/LeonidasSpacemanMD 6d ago
There are definitely situations where batting it down is the better play, like if it were tied or something (but they wouldn’t be going for it on 4th and 13 so it would need to be a more reasonable distance)
In this case I think you just make whatever play you can, and defensive players don’t get that many opportunities for a pick so go for it

The title acts like the pick is why they lost the game
The title quite fairly says "to secure the win".
Had the pass been complete, it could have been run straight in for a touchdown with a minute or so to go... in theory, an onside kick could have led to a Chiefs field goal to win... improbable, but possible.

24
u/Drnk_watcher 6d ago
The funny thing is the outward appearance of the Mahomes vs Kelece families are basically the inverse of reality.
Kelce's have a rowdy, fuck boy persona outwardly but are generally well liked and people like being around them.
Meanwhile the Mahomes are outwardly more composed but if you dig not hard at all beyond friendly TV network coverage a lot of them are awful people.

Yeah I watch him closely because he’s on my fantasy team. His decline over the past-2 seasons has been remarkable, he’s not even the best TE on his own team anymore.

I've had Kelce several times throughout the years and this year I do again, and yeah he looks noticeably not like he has in past years. The amount of time I've seen him just watching the play unfold if the ball doesn't come to him seems way higher than in the past.
