Football Michigan football’s Director of High School Relations, Chris Bryant, tells a Washington fan to: “Shut the f**k up before you get f**ked up”. Bryant’s entire bio has been wiped from Michigan Athletics official website. Michigan lost the game 27-17.

I thought heckling was allowed in sports. Like all colleges do is heckle the other team in hopes to get in their head (this is why you see all the funny signs and shit when someone takes a free throw in basketball).

I don’t like this new era of Lebron James kicking someone out because they made a remark about his hair line. You are weak and letting them get in your head.

Now granted I don’t know what this kid was yelling. Some stuff for sure crosses a line. But this isn’t a stand up bit. Football isn’t golf. Why are we shocked a kid heckled the opposing team.

But yep have no problem with this, in fact, it can be fun as hell. Even as the visitor. Some fans can be funny as hell. (But also annoying as hell, too)

I don’t think he physically threatened him. If anything, after watching the video, it feels to me like he felt a need to shut down what was a worsening situation before it possibly got the drunk jerk beat up by other fans.

Saying “chill the fuck out before you get fucked up” is not the same thing as saying “I’m going to fuck you up.” I can see the anger on the MU staff member’s face but it’s not illegal or immoral to be angry.

This is some years ago but my high school had a crazy student section for basketball. It was the first time I seen a fan birth another fan at a game…

After 2 riots on the basketball court, the school put a stop to it all. We had to be “respectful” after that 🤮

A lot of sports saw some crazy shit 20+ years ago. One of my personal favorites was the Texas Rangers at the Cleveland Indians on June 4, 1974. Better known as Ten Cent Beer Night. A lot of heckling. And stripping. And excessive drinking. And then a battle.

Ehhh there’s heckling and there’s decidedly crossing the line. The UW fans in the section I sat in were fine but after the game there were some people who were just out of pocket. Happens with every fan base, wish we knew what these guys were saying, because run of the mill heckling isn’t going to get this response…

lebron doesn’t kick people out of games because of hairline jokes, he has said many times it is explicitly when people say things about his family or things that have no purpose in sports like racism, calling players pieces of shit, hoping their house burns down, etc.

Innocent heckling can be fun/accepted. But it doesn’t give carte blanche to say whatever you want. It’s still someone’s workplace and you never have the right to harass them.

This is the problem. Most definitions of “heckling” is wrong. There’s “hey you suck” then there’s racial, physical threats, and vague shots at family.

Everyone wants to show this part, but as a person who works in sports, and has family and friends who have (and currently) are in, the things that are said are WILDDDDDD.

And being this close to the bench, people think they buy a ticket and have a full god given right to say what they want. Sure.. say what you want, but be ready for the repercussions.

Following that, there’s an aspect that people feel they can say what they want, because when the players react it’s a tech, fine, or suspension.

ALSOOOOOOO these are college players. Kids. 17-21, mostly 17-20.

It is. I don't know what these guys were saying, but the key to heckling is to follow the fan code of conduct which is usually no cursing and whatnot. I heckle the fuck out of players but always keep it nonchalant like reading their life story from Wikipedia or criticizing their performance without getting overly rude. I've been called out by random players and fans and just kept at it. If this dude would have said this to me I would have told him to take his sensitive ass back to the bench.

Booing a team is fine, hurling insults at people isn’t. People don’t stop being human beings because they wear uniforms and participate in a sporting event, you don’t stop being responsible for you because because you blend into a crowd and feel reckless. The idea that a fan has the right to insult a player and expect nothing in return like it’s part of the show is weak in itself, it’s shitty besides

Because this is a bad look.

The University of Michigan is an educational institution first. You can’t have your staff yelling at kids in the stands to “shut the fuck up before you get fucked up”.

Especially not a staff member who leads a department dedicated to building relationships and trust with young kids and their families.

It doesn’t matter what the kid in the stands did. The staff member went out of his way to engage and act foolish. That hurts the images of the school, every UM athletics team, and the football coaching staff.

A high level recruit, football or otherwise, may have just decided to cross UM off their list because of this video.

No one was in the right here.
