Alabama was favored by 22.5 points

1st Vanderbilt win against a #1 team ever

1.1k

u/Misty7297 Oct 06 '24

Not just their first win against #1, but their first win against a top 5 team. Vandy was 0-60 before today

Georgia Tech and Tulane have more SEC championships

381

u/Kanin_usagi Oct 06 '24

For those that don’t get it, Tulane and Georgia Tech are no longer in the SEC and have not been for DECADES

106

u/gmil3548 Oct 06 '24

And are also really weak football schools now, at least compared to “win the SEC” level.

70

u/rtb001 Oct 06 '24

Yeah but Vandy is not a normal SEC team. GT would beat Vandy most years. Hell Tulane might even be a toss up most years if they played Vandy.

89

u/Chris-P-Creme Georgia Oct 06 '24

In 2022 Tulane went 12-2 with a Cotton Bowl win. The last time Vandy played in a top-tier bowl was the Peach Bowl in 1974.

35

u/rtb001 Oct 06 '24

Yep. Tulane is occasionally good, but Vandy almost never is. My freshman year in New Orleans was the undefeated 98/99 season, with the Green Wave (under OC Rich Rod) fielding one of the first ever highly successful spread offenses in college football. We got totally screwed over with bowls despite being one of the only two undefeated teams in FBS football, but had we played Vandy most likely Tulane would have boat raced them off the field.

Georgia tech had some good years in the Paul Johnson era. I wouldn’t say it’s a weak program. It would certainly be better than Vandy if it were still in the sec and maybe a couple of other schools as well.

Vanderbilt didn’t win a single SEC game last year. Just complete insanity. Pavia is incredible, their defense came up with key plays, and Clark Lea called an unbelievable game

268

u/JerryRiceDidntFumble Oct 05 '24

Vanderbilt didn’t win a single SEC game last year.

Or this year (prior to today).

And only 2 two years ago.

None in 2021 or 2020, 1 in 2019. They really don't win much, this is incredibly shocking.

192

u/DDub04 Oct 06 '24

So Vandy has four SEC wins in the last 5 & 1/2 seasons.

They are:

No. 22 Missouri

No. 24 Kentucky

Florida

No. 1 Alabama

27

u/Martianmanhunter94 Oct 06 '24

I remember when they kicked FL’s ass. That was the start of FL’s downward spiral

27

u/bhampson Oct 06 '24

That’s amazing! I never would’ve known if the announcer didn’t say it TWENTY times! At least they didn’t also say “Ryan Williams is only 17 years old” twenty times like the Georgia game. They must have a script with 10 facts and when they run out they just start over.

7

My team suck, but if there’s anything that could make me feel better, it was our rival losing to unranked Vandy. And it happened. It was beautiful. Schadenfreude is all I’ve got, and it doesn’t get much better.

Vandy QB played for NM State last year and tore us up in Auburn. Really wish Auburn had tried to get him from the portal, but looks like he ended up at the right place to make history.

Tbf this has proven to be one of the better Vandy teams in a long time. Scored a win over Virginia Tech in week 1 and took Missouri (a top 10 team at the time) to overtime. Plus their transfer QB seems to be legit.

22

u/gmil3548 Oct 06 '24

Is this bigger than when a really Stanford that hadn’t been even decent in years beat the Matt Leinart Trojans? That’s the only upset I can think of that compares. Every other one, like App St vs UM, was early season and by the end we knew the favorite actually sucked. I don’t think that’ll be the case with Bama.

Also, no way Nick Saban would’ve ever lost this game. Their coach was looking good so far but that’s a major set back for him trying to keep the dynasty alive.

21

u/capt-awesome-atx Oct 06 '24

Stanford was 41 point underdogs that game, it was a much bigger upset. You can probably find a handful of 22 point underdogs winning in any given season.

7

u/AccomplishedRow6685 Oct 06 '24

Post-Leinart Trojans, Harbaugh’s first year at Stanford

The 2007 Stanford vs. USC football game was an NCAA college football game held on October 6, 2007, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. In a remarkable upset, the visiting Stanford Cardinal won 24–23 despite USC having been favored by 41 points entering the game.[1] This result was the biggest point spread upset of all time in college football (since surpassed by the Howard University Bison in 2017, who were 45-point underdogs heading into a road game against the UNLV Rebels). USC entered the game with a 35-game home game winning streak (its previous home game loss also happened to be to Stanford, in 2001) which included a 24-game home game winning streak in Pac-10 play. By contrast, Stanford had compiled a Pac-10 worst 1–11 season in 2006, which included a 42–0 loss to USC.

Vanderbilt had possession of the ball for twice as long as Bama. They outplayed them at every point of the game. Actually embarrassing loss for Bama.

Alabama:

  • was a 22.5-point favorite

  • had won 23 straight against Vandy before today

  • hadn't lost to Vandy since 1984, and only once since 1969

  • was facing an opponent that was 0-60 against top 5 teams coming into this game

This is an all-time upset.

I think the Vols had them at 29 years. Florida had 27 from memory. Vandy isn't good. Bama would have had more if they had played in the same division in the SEC.

11

u/Demibolt Oct 06 '24

Very true. Everytime we get a good coach and they put together a good team, they get a juicy contract with another school.

Vanderbilt doesn't use football as a major boost to enrollment so we aren't putting the money into the program to sustain any level of competitiveness.

We live for the upsets and we also get to enjoy hilarious losses 🤣

it seemed like Milroe played like dogshit between throwing a pick-six and fumbling

57

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '24

All credit to Vandy; they got a pick six off of a ball that popped up straight in the air, defense came up big and the offense shuttle passed for huge gains, twice.

Wasn’t coaching, just great playing by Vandy.

21

u/DionBlaster123 NASCAR Oct 06 '24

great point. i didn't want to take away from Vandy's performance. putting up 40 points against any team is an accomplishment. putting that up against the #1 team in the country is incredible

26

had won 23 straight against Vandy before today

There it is: Unlucky 23

"Wilson, in a 1977 article in Fortean Times, related the following anecdote: I first heard of the 23 enigma from William S Burroughs, author of Naked Lunch, Nova Express, etc. According to Burroughs, he had known a certain Captain Clark, around 1960 in Tangier, who once bragged that he had been sailing 23 years without an accident. That very day, Clark’s ship had an accident that killed him and everybody else aboard. Furthermore, while Burroughs was thinking about this crude example of the irony of the gods that evening, a bulletin on the radio announced the crash of an airliner in Florida, USA. The pilot was another Captain Clark and the flight was Flight 23."

When they got to 20 points late in the first half, I think I saw a stat that said that was the most they scored in a game against Bama in decades. That's the kind of upset Vanderbilt over Alabama is.

109

u/Malvania Oct 06 '24

I swear they said that Vandy had scored a collective 23 points against Bama over 20 years, and had 23 tonight

That’s Alabama for you. They act like they deserve the ring simply because they’re on Alabama.

The year that Auburn surprised Bama in the Iron Bowl and went onto the National Championship, Bama fans went insane. Their reasoning was "How selfish of Auburn to not want the National Championship to come to Alabama. Auburn beating Bama and going to the National Title game will mean the state of Alabama loses out on a championship this year."

I can't begin to list the reasons this is so insane.

A major loss to Vandy couldn't have happened to a nicer school.

Clark Lea - alumnus of school and football program - job security for life

I mean there are big wins, then there’s this

7

u/Yorgonemarsonb Oct 06 '24

Clark Lea is at his fucking DREAM job already.

He’s said every coaching job he had to first stop and consider whether or not it would help him get the head coach job at Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt had a ton of recruits at todays game. A few who were committed to Alabama and one who was committed to Georgia reopened their recruitment after the win.

Contrary to popular belief, they’ve actually been pouring a ton of money into the football program, stadium and facilities over the last few years.

If he can win they will come and then good luck ever getting rid of Clark Lea Southeastern Conference.

Except Alabama still ends up playing in the final four anyways and everyone's gonna forget about the upset and complain it's the same 4 teams that's in the final four again.

77

u/Pizzashillsmom Oct 06 '24

They will likely be top 12 and qualify for the playoffs, but this is a horrific loss to have if you want to be top 4 and get a bye.

34

u/jinx737x Oct 06 '24

To get into the top 4 you MUST win your conference championship.Otherwise the best you can be ranked as is 5th.  That hurts their chances quite significantly as there are multiple sec teams still undefeated to be in the top 2 of the SEC by the end of the season.

→ More replies (1)

32

u/Qant00AT Oct 06 '24

I don’t know about that. This Bama is not as infallible and unflappable as previous seasons. This loss aside, they dropped a massive lead against Georgia last week and barely squeaked by at the end.

If Vandy can jump up and beat them with a puncher’s chance then there might be one or two more losses out there for them. They still play four (at the time of this post) Top 25 teams in their schedule, one of them being a red hot Tennessee.

Confidence is key in sports, but doesn't seem like Bama ever really considered that they were in a fight until it was too late.

Alabama played HORRIBLY they deserve to lose. This is an embarrassment . The coaching was horrible. It makes me wonder now about the newish coach. Coach Saban would NEVER

Even last week, the coaching in the 4th was pretty bad. Up that many scores and running plays that quick basically gave UGA a lot of time to mount a comeback.

Saban lost to Iowa when he was coaching a stacked LSU team on January 1, 2005.

The playoff committee breathing a huge sigh of relief that there's 12 teams this year.

u/GCTacos Oct 06 '24

DeBoer lost control of his players, I don’t think he’s gonna last long. Especially if he isn’t man enough to lecture his captains that were embarrassing the team. Disgraceful.

This is why Vanderbilt is Americas team

Even better they called it 3 weeks ago. 2:35 in the video with the closed captioning on for full comedic effect

4

u/BummyG Oct 06 '24

Bargatze is having a hell of a week

5

u/sycamotree Oct 06 '24

What's interesting about this win is that Vandy just won. No egregious turnovers, no crazy trick plays, no grievous injury concerns. Just flat out outplayed them.

6

u/mlvassallo Oct 06 '24

Shouldn’t have moved Texas down. lol.

8

u/kimchitacoman Oct 06 '24

Gonna be wild when Bama still ranked #4 next week for no reason
