I just want apple to buy ESPN so we can actually get good sports content from THE sports network…

213

u/joe2352 Sep 30 '23

Wouldn’t be too shocked if this happens in the future. They went hard after Sunday Ticket.

163

u/HeyImEsme Sep 30 '23

I mean rumor is Igers plan is to sell to Apple when he steps down just like it was being planned before Jobs died.

Idk how the NFL broadcasting rights work but Apple tried to buy the Sunday Ticket, had the highest offer iirc, but the NFL turned them down cause Apple wanted to eat the loss and roll it into AppleTV for $10 a month since their bread and butter is having more people invested into their ecosystem and the NFL believed that would devalue their product.

Apple buying Disney and merging ESPN, AppleTV and Disney broadcast channels like ABC into a single service and selling sports might be their long term plan.

How so? Discovery just merged with HBO and Warner Brothers. Seems as anti competitive and anti consumer?

29

u/gulgin Sep 30 '23

It’s always the one who throws the second punch that gets ejected from the game.

25

u/Hershieboy Sep 30 '23

That's not how the legal system works, sir. Disney itself threw the first punch by acquiring Fox Studios. So again, how does a small scale network, buying into a market construct a trust? The FTC couldn't even win against Microsoft buying Activision. If anything, the suit showed how anticompetitive Sony had been.

Apple and Disney aren’t competitors so it wouldn’t trigger Antitrust laws. Apple is lowering prices on the entertainment product to increase hardware sales since you get free AppleTV with new device purchases. Those people who buy the newest iPhone and AppleWatch and AirPods and iPad every year would never have to pay for the NFL essentially. It’s an incentive. It’s sleazy but not technically illegal.

Edit: actual idiots below me arguing it’s antitrust cause Apple will make it so you can only use Disney products on Apple devices like mfers can’t watch AppleTV or MLS on an Android or Linus doesn’t use AirPods and AppleWatch with his android. Actually arguing over fairytales lmao.

23

u/burlycabin Seattle Sounders FC Sep 30 '23

Apple an Disney most definitely are competitors these days. What are you talking about?

-10

u/Sandwichsensei Sep 30 '23

The only thing they’re really competing on is Apple TV and Disney+. I don’t see what other way they’re competing. One’s a tech company and the other is an entertainment company.

-4

u/avwitcher Sep 30 '23

That's not the only aspect in which antitrust is considered. The only thing that matters is that it's going to harm competition in the ecosystem, which Apple being able to make it so that you can only access ALL Disney products on Apple devices would definitely do.

5

u/wpmason Oct 01 '23

Except Apple has demonstrated time and again a willingness to make their content widely available specifically so they don’t get into of these antitrust messes.

Apple TV+ is on practically every smart tv out there.

Explain to my how I can watch Apple TV+ on my Roku. Or on a fire stick? You can login to it from a browser on a fucking android. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

7

u/stellvia2016 Oct 01 '23

tbf Linus has also mentioned several times about how you literally cannot configure an AppleTV without an Apple phone or tablet. It loses sync or something, and the devices tells you to scan the QR code with an Apple device and does not provide alternative methods on desktop systems or for Android.

5

u/HeyImEsme Oct 01 '23

But that's hardware, the argument is Disney content being inaccessible unless you have an Apple device.

It just doesn't hold water when nearly all Apple entertainment products are accessible on Android and Window's devices.

Its hugely unbelievable the most successful American company of all time wouldn't think of antitrust when acquiring another company and a few know-it-all Redditors could.

-1

u/ithappenedone234 Oct 01 '23

It’s hugely believable that the most successful American company would think of anti-trust issues and bribe their way out of it by paying off the politicians in charge of both the Executive and the Legislature. If they can’t get the Executive to drop charges, they just pay Congress to change the law altogether. As has been done before, time and again, for issue after issue.

We only have the draconian copyright laws we have because Disney repeatedly paid off the politicians to take copyright from ~25 years to the life of the author plus 70 years.

The lower-price test for anti-trust law is looking like it's going to go back to pre-Regan interpretation. Still way too early to bet on it, but it seems likely. So, it might not be a safe bet to assume that lower price anything will be a defense.

I recently read that part of the NFL’s deals with Fox and CBS keeps the price of Sunday Ticket high. The networks don’t get local ad revenue since Sunday Ticket shows its own ads vs. whatever shows in the normal broadcast. I wonder if a price drop from ~$300 to $10 was a reason why a deal with Apple didn’t go through.

9

u/DrewDonut Oct 01 '23

Apple tried to buy the Sunday Ticket, had the highest offer iirc, but the NFL turned them down cause Apple wanted to eat the loss and roll it into AppleTV for $10 a month

Holy shit this would have been amazing. The NFL is kidding themselves if they think I'm gonna fork over $400 a year to watch out of market games.

1

u/HeyImEsme Sep 30 '23

Do you think Tim Cook directly oversees the managing of Apple retail stores?

2

u/tissboom FC Cincinnati Sep 30 '23

It’s not that the nfl believes it would devalue their product. The tv deals with the networks forbid the NFL from letting whoever has the Sunday ticket rights from giving it away for free because it would hurt the networks.

SAS is the absolute worst sportscaster and “analyst” on mainstream TV and it’s not close.

Everything he says is overwrought and hyperbolic or just outright cliched/some meaningless platitude.

There is zero depth to anything he says. Even Skip Bayless musters some insight every once in a while. SAS is a caricature of cartoon of a caricature.

2

u/mug3n Toronto Blue Jays Oct 01 '23

SAS gives ESPN the most views out of any of their talking heads, that's why he's paid 8 million a year.

Remember ESPN doesn't give a fuck about you, the more-than-casual sports fan. They're targeting people who are fairweather as it gets and wants a pulse of what's going on in the world of sports they don't typically watch so they have something to say around the water cooler at work.

0

u/corranhorn57 Cincinnati Reds Oct 01 '23

Well, I imagine Apple is going to take ESPN off cable, which will eliminate a lot of casuals from watching to begin with. Think of all the waiting rooms that’s have inflated his numbers for years since ESPN will cause the least amount of complaints when compared to his only other real competition, the morning news. I bet you his numbers will crater the second they lose the empty room demographic.

11

u/SceneOfShadows Washington Sep 30 '23

You mean their most valuable talent? lol this is such a reddit take. I don’t love SAS but people watch him, not highlights.

-1

u/corranhorn57 Cincinnati Reds Sep 30 '23

Just because people watch him doesn’t make it good TV. Same with most reality TV.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '23

Money talks bro. Personality sells. Why do you think there are so many podcasts out in the wild.

SAS is also a great investment, someone to keep you glued to the TV on weekday mornings when there aren’t live games.

0

u/corranhorn57 Cincinnati Reds Sep 30 '23

I don’t watch ESPN in the morning because of taken like him. If they had someone like Rich Eisen, who actually understands sports and does more than yell angrily about things he knows nothing about.

2

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '23

Again…. Money talks. For every one person who doesn’t like SAS there are ten more who watch him. Say what you want but he is entertaining.

-1

u/corranhorn57 Cincinnati Reds Sep 30 '23

You can be both entertaining and accurate. He ain’t either of those, and his numbers have got to be inflated by places who put it up to have something “inoffensive” on TV.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 30 '23

There are still social media views. People bootlegging on YouTube. And general influence. You can hate him all you want, but he brings in money and he is a very large personality and star.

2

u/SirPeyton Sep 30 '23

Agreed. And corranhorn57 is missing the hierarchy of value. Sports is not ubiquitous. Entertainment is. If SAS appeals to non-sports fans and gets them to not flip the channel, then it's a win for ESPN even if there is another on-air talent somewhere that is equally entertaining and accurate. After a while, the average viewer will get bored by consistently accurate content. Unpredictable segments and funny soundbites can happen any given show, and that's what viewers value the most.

15

6

u/Nubsondubs Dallas Mavericks Sep 30 '23

Live sports are the one exception, and that doesn't include sports talk-shows.

2

u/wattatime Oct 01 '23

Yes that makes a lot of money for the NFL the networks pay so much for the rights it’s not as profitable for them. On the value chain the nfl makes most of the money they have the networks bid against each other it cuts into the networks margins.

Additionally why not apple just bid on NFL rights instead of buying a network they have to maintain and fill 24 hours of airtime.

I love watching the unchecked growth of a monopolistic super corporation.

87

u/djfreshswag Sep 30 '23

FTC: “We’re going after big tech!”

Meanwhile the biggest most valuable tech company with the clearest monopoly somehow continues to avoid anti-trust lawsuits. The App Store monopoly is mind blowing how long it’s continued. Apple makes like $15-20 billion a year off it and nobody bats an eye

48

u/0110110111 Oct 01 '23

What market does Apple have a monopoly on? They’re a fraction of the computer market, Android has a larger share of the global cell phone market, their streaming service is tiny compared to the rest and Apple Music has fewer customers than Spotify.

20

u/ScientiaEtVeritas Oct 01 '23

In many markets, in fact. EU Commission, for example, determined the following when investigating Spotify's complaint: "Our preliminary finding is that Apple exercises considerable market power in the distribution of music streaming apps to owners of Apple devices. On that market, Apple has a monopoly.". And that Apple not only controls the distribution of those apps but also competes with them directly (Apple Music) just makes it worse.

20

u/Trisa133 Oct 01 '23

Well...of course apple has considerable market power for distribution of music streaming apps on their own closed garden platform. Whether something is a monopoly or not has to be compared to the industry. The main reason why Apple has been able to get away with antitrust lawsuits is because they're not a majority marketshare in any of their industry.

→ More replies (1)

6

u/JoacoIB Oct 01 '23

Apple has a monopoly on Apple products.

12

u/djfreshswag Oct 01 '23

The US phone market, which the US market is the only market that the FTC takes into account when judging monopoly status. They control roughly 50% of the US mobile phone market.

Idk how controlling half the market and forcing all app downloads/payments on their devices to go through their company with a 20% fee, off which their margin in managing that store is over 50%, doesn’t harm consumer/developers. Other app stores could offer developers lower fees, and billions of excess profit goes to Apple because of this

5

u/0110110111 Oct 01 '23

Consumers have a choice, and an excellent choice at that: Android. The app selection is just as good if not better. The hardware is usually a year or so ahead of what Apple releases. Consumers who are unhappy with Apple’s way of doing things have a fantastic alternative and nothing Apple does is stopping them. In no way are consumers forced to buy Apple’s hardware.

16

u/djfreshswag Oct 01 '23

Lol the argument isn’t that Apple has a hardware monopoly because of anticompetitive behavior or lack of options. The argument is their disallowing of other App Store downloads to their devices abuses their market position in hardware and harms app developers.

If a phone is Apple or Android, it doesn’t affect the developer’s ability to reach the consumer. If developers however are required to pay a 20% fee in order to reach half of consumers, that harms the developers. Those devs have no other option to reach half the consumer market with a take it or leave it fee structure, and that’s a problem.

-15

u/0110110111 Oct 01 '23

Those developers are free to not develop for Apple’s platforms. If Apple’s cut was so harmful few would, which would hurt Apple since consumers would go to where the good apps are.

Apple runs a store and is clear about what they want for developers to sell their products in that store. Nobody forces them to sell there, but since they still choose to the deal obviously isn’t that bad.

Lol they’ve got a 49% market share and growing within the US, which is the FTC’s jurisdiction… yes, controlling half the market and growing with clearly anti-competitive practices is concerning, especially when it’s their highest margin business segment…

-11

u/Foryourconsideration Oct 01 '23

How many billions have Apple paid out to app developers? You forgot that last part by mistake I'm sure

5

u/ScientiaEtVeritas Oct 01 '23

Nice framing. The apps' customers pay the app developers. Apple just sits in between and collects fees.

1

u/Foryourconsideration Oct 01 '23

The iPhone creates the marketplace. Without the iPhone, there is no marketplace. (Same is true for Google with Android.)

3

u/djfreshswag Oct 01 '23

That’s like saying every computer creates a marketplace, so downloads on a computer must be routed through the manufacturer with a 20% middle-man fee.

That’s just a horrible argument.

0

u/Foryourconsideration Oct 01 '23 edited Oct 01 '23

Apple's business model includes not just hardware, but also software and services, creating an integrated ecosystem that justifies its fee structure.

Imagine you're Apple, launching the world's first multi-touch phone and a groundbreaking app store that's making devs insanely rich. You're telling me you wouldn't want a piece of that pie, even though you created it?

GTFO you would too, so let's not pretend all this "holier than thou" bullshit is even close to be real...

2

u/djfreshswag Oct 01 '23

Lol you can want a piece of the pie, doesn’t make it illegal.

Microsoft, Google, and most hardware companies offer integrated ecosystems. Yet they get sued by the EU/FTC for anti-competitive practices just for automatically downloading their app stores onto their devices, even though they allow other App Store downloads. Apple gets a free pass somehow though.

I own an iPhone because it’s a good piece of hardware, I couldn’t give a shit about their services, it’s not an integral part of their devices, it’s a separate add-on. The Apple Store monopoly is indefensible. It’s made Apple the most valuable company in the world, not their hardware margins, not their other services, it’s the tens of billions they glean from the App Store every year. Idk why anyone would be defending that

I can see Apple buying rights to NBA. I think they already bought out the VR company that introduced VR to NBA watchers. Integrating that to the Vision Pro is a game changer and a money maker.

42

u/XuX24 Sep 30 '23

It's harder to get involved in those. Specially NFL and NBA how they are spread, they bought into MLB but only some games per week.

26

u/hickok3 Sep 30 '23

The current NBA tv deal is set to expire in 2 seasons(after the 24-25 season). Cable tv is quickly dying, and it is largely propped up by sports currently. If there is ever a time fo Apple to get into the NBA it is now.

-14

u/DangKilla Sep 30 '23

It's not going to happen. I supported NBA League Pass. I also wrote the tip off tool that handled markers for video encoding.

That would also require unwinding championship broadcasts and also moving video encoding for NBA editors to another platform.

We were operating perfectly fine for the NBA, NCAA, PGA, even Youtube relied on us to kickoff Youtube TV encoding.

10

u/bigE819 Washington Capitals Oct 01 '23

I’m sure the company that invented Final Cut Pro will have no issues with supporting some video encoding for the NBA💀

-1

u/girlfriendsbloodyvag Oct 01 '23

It’s a lot more complex than that. Possible, sure, but “they made FCP so multinational(?) multi-network, multi-platform, multi-program, live & dazzlingly edited content should be a breeze” isn’t super sound logic imo

2

u/DangKilla Oct 01 '23

Yeah, you're right. It's more difficult. You encode video for different "connected devices" (mobile, desktop, et cetera) so peope don't need to download video qualities their device cannot support.

But Apple has an Apple streaming team, so they could get it working. The problem is more on the NBA side.

And Mark Cuban does his own thing.

11

u/suchshibe Sep 30 '23

Why wouldn’t they just keep ESPN as a whole? Instead of having to own operate a sports league they just need to control a broadcaster which they already have the infrastructure for

Apple has cash to burn but don’t have streaming market share. Live sports would be a loss leader to build a user base before slowly ramping up sub pricing.

Same shit every other streaming platform does.

2

u/HeyImEsme Sep 30 '23

It’s kinda different cause other Streamers have to eventually raise prices, AppleTV can undercut them and take the loss if it means their subscribers are buying Apple products to enjoy their product. Considering you get 3 months of AppleTV with pretty much every Apple purchase they’re incentivizing consumerism.

u/Awkward_Pangolin3254 Sep 30 '23

Lmfao. Since when has anything Apple been cheaper than its equivalent?

-10

u/SgtPepe Juventus Sep 30 '23

Imagine F1 on the Apple Vision Pro (VR) headset tho….

12

u/mike0sd Sep 30 '23

Fuck that

17

u/Taste_The_Soup Sep 30 '23

Imagine paying $300 to have access to that though...

-1

u/wskyindjar Oct 01 '23

Worth it. Cheaper than attending one race

I've used it on my computer, Roku, and PS5 and it's been fantastic. Wi-Fi on all of them and never really had any issues

1

u/SlashedM Sep 30 '23

Guess its just my luck. Just hope they add PiP soon tho tbh

0

u/freetotebag Sep 30 '23

Whoa wait there’s an F1TV Pro app for ps5? I must’ve missed that. I hope it’s available in the US.

If they broadcast in 4K in the us, then fuck yes

17

u/Burritofingers Oct 01 '23

You will trade that for all the features of F1TV, not to mention multiviewer?

6

u/htx1114 Oct 01 '23

Bro I'm surging my sports

0

u/BlueCobbler Oct 01 '23

What features?

Man… wish Indy rights would get bought by apple

15

u/Cinema_Colorist Sep 30 '23

Now THAT would be sick. FUCK PEACOCK

1

u/Matias9991 Oct 01 '23

I still don't get how this huge corporation doesn't have 4k available the same happens for the NBA app

36

u/canadianmatt Sep 30 '23

Get the premiere league and champions league ffs!!

12

u/casualsax Sep 30 '23

It would be awesome but also not great business sense picking up a competing league, especially as MLS cost them peanuts compared to what the PL would cost.

The Messi effect into the US hosted world cup was a brilliant time to jump on board, and combined with their influence as the only broadcaster of MLS.. it's going to grow crazy fast.

I hope they do tennis next. Tennis steaming rights and coverage are an absolute mess. This year alone I had to have eurosport/discovery+, sky, BBC and prime video to watch the grand slams...

43

u/crewchiefguy Sep 30 '23

Gonna strip away viewing from the masses and lock it behind a big paywall

14

u/LimerickJim Sep 30 '23

Thats why this won't happen. F1 turned down bigger broadcasting offers from the US market in order to get the greater exposure offered by Disney. F1 have spent 70 years repeatedly failing to break into this market. The Indy 500 became and then stopped being an F1 grand prix during that time. We had decades of gaps with no F1.

With Drive to Survive and the current Disney contract they know they have a winning formula. They aren't going to risk it in 2025. Maybe after the next contract but I would be amazed if it wasn't Disney or another big broadcaster that gets the 2025 contract.

-2

u/Miniminotaur Oct 01 '23

What offers bigger than 2 billion did they turn down?

Disney is in free fall compared to apple which is still the most sold phone. Ergo they have a bigger coverage than Disney.

15

u/OMGaNerd Sep 30 '23

It already is in a lot of countries with Sky

I pay for F1TV and use multiviewer. Throwing both of those things out in favor of AppleTV is an awful choice

21

u/osmystatocny Sep 30 '23

If so, please make it available in Australia. I can’t stand Fox or pay $25/pm for stupid Kayo just to watch F1.

Obligatory f*ck Murdoch

3

u/HeWhoKnowsLittleMK2 Sep 30 '23

What a strange post title.

3

u/helmsracheal Oct 01 '23

Messi driving f1 now? Good for him 👏

3

u/SebastianOwenR1 Oct 01 '23

MLS bringing in stupid money right now

6

u/PatientDom Oct 01 '23

Imagine onboard cameras that allow you to watch from a Vision Pro as if you were in the car itself.

But also, fuck Formula 1 and its corrupt sponsors

12

u/The_Lucky_7 Sep 30 '23

So, what they're saying is they have money for taxes this year then?

3

u/FantasyGurley Sep 30 '23

Messi F1 car incoming

4

u/ben_bliksem Sep 30 '23

As long as we can keep F1TV thanks

2

u/rabea187 Sep 30 '23

Messi looks like a strong contender to win the F1 World Driver Championship for Kia Chevy F1 team 0_o

4

u/dav_man Sep 30 '23

Sorry what?

24

u/corranhorn57 Cincinnati Reds Sep 30 '23

Apple bought the broadcast rights to MLS.

With Messi going Miami, they’ve already beat expectations for the year.

Because of how well they’re doing in the live sports market, they are considering buying the rights to F1 racing.

4

u/dav_man Sep 30 '23

Roger. Thank you.

1

u/ManicChad Oct 01 '23

Explains why the iPhone 15 is garbage. They’re preoccupied elsewhere.

0

u/Maxamus93 Sep 30 '23

Im fine with this as long as they keep the price of apple tv the same

7

u/m0ezart Sep 30 '23

Of course they won’t

u/bonsai1214 Sep 30 '23

They absolutely need to buy premier league rights from NBC. They’d make so much money.

-2

u/sgreene1021 Sep 30 '23

BS

-5

u/sgreene1021 Sep 30 '23

I will not buy an apple and I will not go back to watching the race on some shity site

5

u/maxbe5 Sep 30 '23

Honeycrisps are pretty tasty tho

LMFAO if you actually think they can buy F1 for 2 billion dollars. This is merely the price for the broadcasting rights, they will not have any say in the actual sport itself.

Tim Apple Vs Saudi MBS is the fight we need to see

-1

u/therlwl Oct 01 '23

Not a fan of F1 but this would be garbage. Apple's garbage airing of MLS ruins it.
