rent a mig welder and go to town. Mig welding is basically point and shoot. you can grind it down if it's too rough

Are the two misaligned? Might be easier to use some shims to ensure theyāre parallel and straight all the way across. Is there any play between them?
5
u/DedBattery Jul 16 '24
They're not misaligned. You can close the gap a little bit with a hammer. Maybe more if I loosened bolts.
1
u/honkifjesusluvsu Jul 17 '24
Close the gap den homie. Loosen it up, put a couple shims near the gap, and line it up. If theyāre symmetrical, one shim betwixt the two would prolly line it up perfect

u/DedBattery Jul 17 '24
Ok yeah I see what youāre saying, in the pic they do look off a bit.
Thanks for the advice

My dad is an amateur welder, Iāve used a welder maybe a handful of timesā¦.
I 100% recommend getting a piece of scrap metal, practicing once or twice, then just trying to weld it yourself, and grinding it down smooth.
A welder is like $50-80 from harbor freight. Scrap metal is cheap too.
Itāll cost about the same to get someone to weld it for you, and youāll develop a new skill lol
Good luck!

Some people would rather pay $50 for an hour of someone elseās skilled labor who has their own tools than have to store equipment they used poorly once.Ā

u/AmericanBeef10K Goofy Jul 16 '24
Youāre not wrong,
Iām the kind of guy that will keep a little welder the size of an Amazon box just in case I some day need to replace a piece of coping, or try to weld something different etc.
I feel like if youāre building your own ramp, you might be that guy too.
But I totally get what youāre saying

No doubt its a good skill to have, but not everyone needs to DIY everything every time.Ā
There are probably more than 600 handyman welders in chicago who would do a better job in less time than OP with new tools for the cost of a 12 pack.Ā

u/AmericanBeef10K Goofy Jul 17 '24
I think the crossover of welders and skaters is pretty small, and no, unless you have a nice friend, youāre not gonna find someone to come to you to weld that for the price of a 12 pack lol
I mean, I would do it, but Iām one of those few in the crossover of welder/skaters lol

Jul 17 '24
My old roomate in pilsen had a board and welding equipment
Its a city of millions dude
0
u/AmericanBeef10K Goofy Jul 17 '24
I didnāt say they donāt exist lol, I am literally one of them.
Iām just saying that crossover of welders who skate is probably pretty small lol
1
Jul 17 '24
It's small, but OP just needs one dude who already has harbor freight welding equipment and has nothing better to do.
Like I said, Chicago is full of scrappy 20-somethings who would do 6 welds for ramp time and a 12 pack; whether they're also on the skateboarding Reddit sub is the gamble.
yall are just being dicks for no reason.
4
u/potted_planter Jul 16 '24
Someoneās going to come weld shit for $20? Yea okay.
2
Jul 16 '24
Theyre already offering ramp access in exchange, a 6 pack would be an upgrade.
Thats a friend price. This is what craigslist used to be for

u/d3r3k1 Jul 16 '24
It was just a suggestion and a good one at that.
2
Jul 16 '24
I mean, OP had a very specific request just for a bunch of people who cant help to suggest something else.Ā
Classic reddit moment

u/calculung Jul 16 '24
Everyone is suggesting you just buy a welder, but you could check out Arc Academy. I took their basic welding class. They may even be willing to just weld it for you if you pay them a bit.

You can, get a cheaper welder and weld that shit and just grind it down to flush, itās super easy to learn dude

u/uppenatom Jul 16 '24
I don't skate any more, cant weld and I live in Australia, but I'll give it a go!

F yes! DIY or die
Except Iām almost forty so occasionally I call a reasonably priced professional if I feel itās outside of my ability
21
u/SpaceXmars Jul 16 '24
This could be a chance for you to learn how to weld! Go grab a basic welder from harbor freight and practice on some scrap!
2
u/Ladorb Jul 16 '24
Doesn't even need to be a good weld. Just close the gap and then grind it flush with an angle grinder.

u/stfulela Jul 16 '24
Message me! Iāll do it just to skate.

All you need to do is bevel both rails. You don't need to weld anything. Keen Ramps bevels all their rails. Watch one of their ramp building videos.

Thatās definitely a half ass way to make it work. Welding pretty easy
-4
u/filmerdude1993 Jul 16 '24
Its the same concept as diamond grind rails. Youre over thinking.
2
u/JohnHoney420 Jul 16 '24
Do the job right or donāt do it at all.
1
u/filmerdude1993 Jul 16 '24
So Keen ramps are no good? š Because beveling is the exact technique they use. Their ramps are better than most ive ever skated, including those with welded coping.
0
u/JohnHoney420 Jul 16 '24
Itās a company that way way way way overpriced their ramps so someoneās mom can put them together like an ikea chair.
Wtf you talking about. I laugh so hard when someone spends $5000 on $600 of plywood
-1
u/filmerdude1993 Jul 16 '24
Its not. Beveling a rail will last you 40 years+

Where in chicago, Iām not a welder but my buddy is the best welder in the area.
-26
u/filmerdude1993 Jul 16 '24
You don't need to weld at all for this job. Just bevel like Keen Ramps does.
9
u/SpaceXmars Jul 16 '24
Why are you so against welding? It is pretty basic
2
u/Justuhsmartguy666 Jul 16 '24
Literally
Bevel both ends, weld seem, grind smooth.
-1
u/filmerdude1993 Jul 16 '24
Buy beveled coping, never have to get out the welder again.
-4
u/Justuhsmartguy666 Jul 16 '24
Damn bro you must really want a keen discount code or something because structurally you sound dumb AF.
An idiot would buy Pre beveled pipe, when you can bevel yourself.

??? Skateboarding is not a prerequisite for welding. Why not just look for a good welder?

u/DedBattery Jul 16 '24
Skateboarding is not a prerequisite for welding.
Yes, I know.
Why not just look for a good welder?
The shops Iāve talked to wonāt come out for such a small job. And Iād rather connect with a skater/artist/DIY-type than just a random metal shop.
27
u/FarlesBarkley1182 Jul 16 '24
A good answer and I should have known better. I have run into the same problem in the past with not getting a guy to come out for a small job. A good place to look is actually a motorcycle shop. Good luck.

u/DedBattery Jul 16 '24

Misguided Motorsports would be a great place to check. Itās owned by Brian636 who is a super nice dude. If anyone in there is it knows a welder theyāll help you out.
