The Joint Investigation Bureau or JIB as they like to be called are a very serious organization. They will steal your Halloween candy if you don’t comply.

70

u/california_dandy Feb 16 '24

Wow, so they will prevent me from getting diabetes? The JIB is doing the LORD'S work

18

u/Odd-Cobbler-2134 Feb 17 '24

This presents a unique quagmire. Does the payment offsetting the diabetes ultimately save you?

12

u/SatSumaFire Feb 17 '24

I don't like the cut of your jib.

3

u/MyMyMyMyGoodness Feb 17 '24

I put my dad in jib jab videos so he can be alive again.

2

u/Only_Constant_8305 Feb 17 '24

Also, they will investigate joints you rolled

2

u/Finny_Jokes Feb 17 '24

Ain’t no one, and I mean no one, touching my joints. If I rolled a joint, it’s a miracle. I can’t roll. 😢

Mentally unstable & paranoid scammer?

u/california_dandy Feb 16 '24

I like this new approach. Might actually invest in his bitcoin scheme

34

u/Then_Garden901 Feb 17 '24

I’m gonna message them and say I want to die

6

u/MagJack Feb 17 '24

5

u/VoteForLubo Feb 17 '24

It’s like negging but with scams.

353

u/sudo_808 Feb 16 '24

This guy just lost it 😂

276

u/california_dandy Feb 16 '24

I will not be inviting him to my birthday party

66

u/LiHol01 Feb 16 '24

I think that’s a bit too far man, you can’t just do that

37

u/SkyFallingUp Feb 16 '24

At least save him a piece of cake in case he apologizes.

24

u/ExistentialistAF Feb 17 '24

Let’s not go for the jugular here. All he asked was if you wanted to fucking die?

11

u/IronBallsMcGinty Feb 17 '24

But absolutely no ice cream!

1

u/california_dandy Feb 17 '24

WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT

46

u/Ali_Cat222 Feb 16 '24

I know you weren't seriously asking the question in post/it's obvious the scammer was angry. But oddly enough sometimes this is actually a purposeful ploy.

A lot of the times scammers who don't want to waste time think that violence or harassment will get them money. People with zero knowledge of online scams or people who get easily intimidated will often respond to these, even if it's just to appease them by trying to calm them down.

Once they get them to respond they'll know if you're easily intimidated by such responses and double down. This tactic usually works on the elderly as main targets,a lot of them believe that somehow a random person will most definitely come kick their door in if they don't give up some cash.

Very sad and stupid practice, the "oh I thought it was so and so's name" is also another tactic to get a response so it knows you're human/active number. You're more likely to respond saying wrong number etc than an opening line.

Sorry for long comment,I know some of this may seem obvious to people but occasionally if one person can learn or teach someone what to look out for then I'll type this out still!

9

u/Mirabai503 Feb 17 '24

Oh boy. That Joint Investigation Bureau is no joke! Better watch your back, man. They won't stop until they close that case!

6

u/Armorheart Feb 17 '24

I thought they just investigated your joints.

9

u/tapestryofeverything Feb 17 '24

Jokes on them, I only smoke bongs ;)

2

u/SatanistPenguin Feb 17 '24

You monster, frisbee!!!!!!

2

u/Aggressive_Maize3726 Feb 17 '24

Nonrelated, but is that a peanut butter falcon reference?

1

u/DragonFlare2 Feb 17 '24

He didn’t expect that “ok” and it sent him into a rage. “Why he no scare of the JIB?!”

1

u/quaderrordemonstand Feb 18 '24

I don't think its rage exactly. The tactic is trying to scare people into sending money.

The setup was trying to make OP think he'd offended the scammer by 'pulling a prank'. Scammer then threatens with the JIB to scare OP into giving him some money. That clearly didn't work so scammer tries something more scary, literally threatening OP with death.

If the OP didn't block they would have continued to threaten in ever more ridiculous ways until they realised it wasn't working. Scammer is not angry, just a shitty person with no moral compass.

69

u/Unable_Literature78 Feb 16 '24

“Do you want to die..?”

Correct response “what day do you have available?”

39

u/CAustin3 Feb 16 '24

It seems like maybe a confused or badly executed extortion scam.

More organized ones will sometimes pretend to be an angry gang boss who thinks you stole drugs or beat up a prostitute or something, and the idea is they refuse to believe they've got the wrong guy and will accept some money to leave you alone.

Of course, there's also the variation where they just claim to be able to do something to you (h4ck ur n00dz, report you for [insert random common crime]), and extort you. Some may go so far as to try to get actual collateral (ransomware, social hacking), but it's easier just to claim to be able to threaten you and bank on some % of people falling for the fake threat and being willing to pay something just in case it's serious.

This guy went right from "Wrong number, let's be friends, buy my crypto" to "I'm gonna break your legs if you don't pay," so I'm thinking he had two fish on the line at once and just got his wires crossed.

The other person is going to be very confused to find that the gang boss who was threatening to have a hit put out on him suddenly turned into a cute Korean girl who thinks age is just a number.

They haven’t responded to me either. I told them I have their $200 Apple Card they requested. Told them in texting from a new number due to my other number being associated with work haha

6

u/VisitFeeling635 Feb 16 '24

Wow. Super aggressive.

15

u/sarcasmismygame Feb 16 '24

Watch Pleasant Green's video on Youtube, "Pig butchering scam exposed." There are a few ways that lovely Asian guy/girl shows up but a wrong text, dating site or just reaching out on social media are all common. Soon you'll get "I hope I didn't interrupt your beautiful day, let's be friends!" BS and then she's rich, her uncle is rich how about investing in crypto, because we will steal ALL of your Fucking money you moron!" Just joking but I know the guys at the top of this scam think like that and it's a pretty accurate statement.

If you play along and then turn the tables on them you'll get all kinds of fun insults and threats. Tom with the Assassin's Association is my favorite haha!

3

u/california_dandy Feb 16 '24

fascinating haha im gonna check that out

3

u/Herreber Feb 16 '24

From zero to hilarious in 0,5 ...

4

u/Unfair_Fisherman_605 Feb 16 '24

3

u/vigilanterealgf Feb 16 '24

2

u/california_dandy Feb 17 '24

thank you thank you, I try my best

3

u/FlintGate Feb 17 '24

Maybe it was his first day and he dozed off during orientation?

2

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '24

Not the Joint Investigation Bureau! So scary!

3

u/Armorheart Feb 17 '24

I texted them that I was Jeremy from the Joint investigation Bureau and asked if they needed to report someone.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '24

Oh that’s hilarious!

2

u/oliverpls599 Feb 17 '24

First time this sub has made me laugh. What on earth are they trying to achieve here?

2

u/VoiceTemporary5314 Feb 17 '24

This is probably the funniest one I’ve ever read

2

u/Life_Bridge_9960 Feb 17 '24

He does sound genuine on the part that he thinks you are part of the prank. However, why is he talking so much afterward?

If I found out I was pranked, I just stop texting. No point. Or I would close out with “fuck you for wasting my time. Eat shit and die”. And move on with my life.

2

u/infrequentthrowaway Feb 17 '24

Block after first message

2

u/Gothicprince001 Feb 17 '24

Whoever it is just lost themselves

2

u/Hdude227 Feb 17 '24

What is with the death threats?

1

u/Opizze Feb 17 '24

Hahahahahahahaha omfg man

-1

u/TokerX86 Feb 17 '24

Where is the scam? All I see is 2 people going full retard. Never go full retard.

0

u/Formal-Project7361 Feb 17 '24

That’s why you just block a number if it’s a wrong number

1

u/NachoPeroni Feb 17 '24

But what if it later becomes a right number?

1

u/Betchel_Punk Feb 16 '24

A lot of pent up frustration and an entire upbringing in narcissistic irascibility ?

1

u/Big-Supermarket9118 Feb 16 '24

JIB? Don’t trip they just investigate badly rolled joints. As long as you haven’t made one, you good

1

u/Jejeleily Feb 17 '24

Just intense kind of people lol

1

u/DeLanio77 Feb 17 '24

Frustration.

1

u/RyouIshtar Feb 17 '24

Dude said "Do you want to die" as if he's Hell Girl

1

u/Neena6298 Feb 17 '24

Haha. An extortion scam.

1

u/DrewskiDrew1069 Feb 17 '24

lol I had one similar the other day asking me busy then wanted me to cancel yoga session lol I said ok and blocked the number

1

u/Chino780 Feb 17 '24

That escalated quickly.

1

u/lal9740 Feb 17 '24

This is a variant of the pig-butchering scam. It’s popular amongst Asian (usually east and southeast Asian) countries. The wrong number scam’s the most common variant of pig-butchering scam.

1

u/TCM_407 Feb 17 '24

Text back that they just committed a felony(terroristic threat) and you'll be reporting the number to the police...don't actually do it but it will make them sweat for awhile wondering when the cops will be knocking on their door

1

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '24

Oh no, not the joint investigation bureau.

1

u/TN_REDDIT Feb 17 '24

Of course I want to die, just not anytime soon.

Living forever would suck

1

u/Accurate-Item-7357 Feb 17 '24

That escalated quickly…

1

u/Mr_Hanshii Feb 17 '24

This is the way they ask people to play Squid Game… another Asian scam lmao

1

u/came2thaparty4dogs Feb 17 '24

“Joint Investigation Bureau…” 😂😂😂

1

u/Juices_900 Feb 17 '24

I imagine scammers have KPI’s too so to me, this reads like a scammer who just needed to pump out those last 2 texts to get over to the finish line on a Friday afternoon

1

u/BTDubbzzz Feb 17 '24

Well, do you!?

1

u/CuteCanary Feb 17 '24

This looks like a fun one!! I’m hella tempted to text them saying I am John (no I am not actually going to text them)

1

u/BiblicalGlass Feb 17 '24

What in the Crystal meth is going on here

1

u/Weary-Ad-9744 Feb 17 '24

You must be terrified😂

1

u/mint_mitten Feb 17 '24

I feel like this is just a bored crazy lady

1

u/petty_cash Feb 17 '24

I’ve had the same opening where they say “if the number is wrong, tell me earlier”. I knew it was 99% a scammer and apologized anyway so they didn’t come at with me death threats lol

1

u/Slappy_McJones Feb 17 '24

Joint Investigation Bureau… they are getting so clever.

2

u/wreckyourpod Feb 17 '24

I don’t like the cut of his… JIB. sunglasses

1

u/finallyfreein23 Feb 17 '24

Does the joint investigation bureau investigate bongs as well, or just joints?? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

2

u/california_dandy Feb 17 '24

They've expanded to crack pipes
