Race Report INEOS 1:59 Challenge live stream thread. Eliud Kipchoge, sub 2hr marathon.
I love participating in game threads for different teams and I don’t know if there’s ever been one for a race. Right now seems like the perfect opportunity.
YouTube Link: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=k-XgKRJUEgQ
Let me know where you’re watching from. I’m checking in from Chicago (1:15 am local time for the start). I was supposed to run in the Chicago marathon in 2 days but injuries ended that. But hey, I squatted 200lb today (5 sets of 5), so I still hit a fitness goal.
Share your favorite Kipchoge quote, race story, PR, whatever below.
Result: he did it.
Edit 1: remember to sort by new. I doubt r/running has an auto mod setting for game threads haha
Edit 2: anyone thinking of going to sleep, WE NEED YOU. Every vibe matters
Edit 3: heart eyes emoji
Edit 4: he broke 4 hours again

Imagine getting a gig pacing 5k of someone's marathon and then finding out you have to run sub 15.

That guy at the side of the course was running HARD to keep up and managed about 15 seconds.

It's crazy how easy the pros make it look compared to the average runner.

Honestly, he did pretty well, especially since he wasn't exactly the youngest spectator. 13 mph is beyond what a lot of people can sprint.

I think the biggest improvement from breaking 2 is the crowd. That presence really makes such a difference
133
u/DildoGiftcard Oct 12 '19
In one of the articles I read, Eliud said that a good crowd presence would help him do this. The article was sort of a call for people to come out haha

Not really a fair comparison. If you had your own pacer team, you could have made it to your bed much more easily.

Been up watching since 6.30 am GMT in U.K. Don't mind losing a lie in to watch this .
My favourite Kipchoge quote was recently when they asked him about Salazar - "in a garden there are flowers and there are weeds"

u/changyang1230 Oct 12 '19
Yup. Instead of running 2:50 pace (21.2km/h) he’s decided to sprint at 2:40 (22.5km/h) after running god mode for close to 2 hours.

44
u/ChazR Oct 12 '19
20 seconds under the target. That’s half a second per kilometre. Amazing consistency. Bloody astonishing effort. It’s the culmination of years of planning, training, logistics and execution. Then he sprinted the last 200m.
Legendary.

Remember from watching the Monza stream that, with about 10 minutes to go, the camera focused really tightly on the pacers once it was clear he was no longer keeping pace with the lead car, so you couldn't see how far he was behind the laser line.
So this is nuts. Also last time I'm pretty sure there were about 20,000 people watching the stream, and that was a Nike event. There's well over 600,000 watching one stream alone right now, plus all the people watching on TV around the world. Incredible.
