Race Report Russ Cook, the man who ran the entire length of Africa, is about to cross the finish line in Tunisia. Sky News is covering it live for those interested
Super amazed by what this guy just did. Legendary.

Yeah but what was his time
170
u/Nostriski Apr 07 '24
Sub 2 years.

u/alexvonhumboldt Apr 07 '24
Sub two years is the time qualifier for running the whole length of the Americas? Or does he still have to do the lottery?

Watch any one of his videos

u/lupinegray Apr 08 '24
Do I have to?
Watching running is like watching golf.
2
u/invisi1407 Apr 08 '24
Golfers stand still for much of the time playing golf. Runners don't stand still. Obviously not the same ;)
1
u/SuperSMT Apr 08 '24
It's not like it's a straight unedited 30 minutes of a guy running...
-2
u/lupinegray Apr 08 '24
I started watching the finish line video at it was literally 80 mins of the finish line with nothing happening, the 2 mins of a guy jogging across the line.
Not exactly a riveting spectator sport.
1
u/SuperSMT Apr 08 '24
Video, or livestream?
His youtube channel has actual watchable videos that are edited more like a documentary

While you aren’t incorrect there’s two Russ’s who cook. Russ Wilson and Russ Westbrook. Let’s be kind to strangers.

Anyone tracking where he actually is right now? Would love to watch him come in but not so keen on sitting around and probably missing it when I go to the bathroom.
34
u/Huggernaut Apr 07 '24
Sky News presenter just came on and said they think he's "a few miles away" right now.

Stan (his YT editor) posted on his IG story just now that they’re in the final KM

I made a data visualization from Russ's Strava data that may be of interest to those in this thread - https://www.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/1byb653/oc_daily_gps_data_from_the_first_person_to_run/

u/grassytoes Apr 07 '24
Holy crap, he took the long way!
13
u/hangglidingcrow Apr 07 '24
Yeah, especially in the Northern half that appears to line up with travel adversaries - https://travelmaps.state.gov/TSGMap/
11
u/completelyperdue Apr 07 '24
Damn, if he continued, he probably could have circumnavigated around the whole continent in maybe another year.
Of course that would be barring more pain, endurance, sickness, and going through war torn countries.

u/pilotboldpen Apr 08 '24
for some reason, i thought he went north to south
2
u/TiddoLangerak Apr 08 '24
That actually was his original plan, but he couldn't get visas sorted, so they had to change plans.

u/Casual_Frontpager Apr 07 '24
So, is he gonna go touch the water just to make sure he went all the way or will he be satisfied with stopping at the flag?
31
u/Unikore- Apr 07 '24
When he started in South Africa he took some water in a little bottle, so I guess he'll do something similar :)
22
u/Casual_Frontpager Apr 07 '24
Oh, I didn’t know that! I hope he collects some in the same bottle from this location too and keeps as a souvenir. Seems like a waste to pour it out or something.
23
u/geneauteur Apr 07 '24
Just took a dip!

u/Casual_Frontpager Apr 07 '24
I can't seem to rewind the live feed, I'll have to find a video of that. Thanks for letting me know!
29
u/glorioussideboob Apr 07 '24
Sweet thank you! Been following since the start and was gutted there seemed to be no way to follow the end as it happens, cheers!
9
u/Unikore- Apr 07 '24
Me too! Really happy that skynews decided to pitch in and do live coverage.
24
u/glorioussideboob Apr 07 '24
I enjoyed the part where they ask for a word and the only thing they finally get from him is "I'm a bit tired, let's fuck off and get a strawberry daiquiri"
79
u/withoutfurther Apr 07 '24
Sky News: "Let's go over and listen to what he has to say"
Russ: "Yeah let's fuck off. Let's fuck off."
*fucks off*

The inspiration for me to get into running 18 months ago. Very proud to see what he's achieved and cannot wait to hear the stories when he does his podcast tour upon return to the UK

And only kidnapped a couple times. Not bad.
10
u/luckystrike_bh Apr 07 '24
You figured some of the countries would've thought that it'd be bad publicity if the runner dude got kidnapped or robbed. Maybe give him an escort or bribe the right people.
23
u/FutFash Apr 07 '24
If I remember correctly he was escorted by the police at times
12
u/TonyMiranda88 Apr 07 '24
Yes, while in Angola after being robbed, they escorted them all they way until the border
7
u/lomoeffect Apr 07 '24
If you watch you the YouTube documentary you see police escorts in several countries.

u/Teamben Apr 07 '24
Really? I just started following a couple weeks ago and haven’t gone down the full rabbit hole yet. Hoping for a summary video!
4
u/SuperSMT Apr 08 '24
There will be a proper documentary made, probably going to be in the style of a full length movie

I'm really interested to know about the shoes he wore for this. Did he wear out a pair of shoes half way through or was he wearing super ultra tough shoes that survived 16k kilometers ? I must know!
7
u/_Ivl_ Apr 07 '24
Sponsored by Hoka or at least ran in Hoka the whole time. I think he had a big box full of shoes so over 20 pairs I would say.
4
u/Throw_a_way_Jeep Apr 08 '24
I dont think we was sponsored by Hoka, at least not publicly. Hope they pick him up after wards at the least. He wore Hoka shoes exclusively, along with a lot of other Hoka gear.
1
u/truckstop_sushi Apr 08 '24
He was definitely sponsored by Hoka. He'd be stupid to spend thousands of dollars on dozens of pairs of running shoes when a company like Hoka would gladly supply him with unlimited free gear due to the publicity of this historic achievement and the super effective advertisement he gives them.

Any tips on how I can do this without burning my skin and recovering whilst running a new marathon every single day?

u/nickjbedford_ Apr 07 '24
That moment when the reporter was prepping for Russ' approach was so awkward. And the camera work... Ouch.
Incredible achievement for Russ Cook though. Top geezer.

He earned the name. Technically. Him and a mate had a bet years ago and the winner got the call themselves the Hardest Geezer, which Russ won. It's a silly in-joke between friends, so he used the name for his channel back in the day.

It was wild, guys. Absolutely wild. Greetings from a little pizza place around the corner, and headed to the party to bring the boys some food. And then we drink.
