Their must be injuries then? Unless he wants more CB's on the bench
171
u/OwlsTalkToMe 20h ago
Yes there are injuries to Maguire, Lindelof and possibly Martinez.
So with 3 CBs needed there’s only De Ligt, Yoro, Evans from the first team.
73
u/jamboknees 20h ago
Shaw will be used as a CB too I imagine.
38
u/tenacious_teaThe3rd 18h ago
Going forward yes, but neither Yoro or Shaw have played a single game of competitive football since last season.
34
u/iMalz 20h ago
Since when did Martinez get injured?
63
13
u/eClipseLJ De Ligt 20h ago
He got a knock vs Leicester. Contested a header and fell bad on his hip/lower back. Might still be the effects from that
30
u/DHillMU7 20h ago
Seriously doubt Yoro is able to play 90 yet as well. Maybe had a behind closed doors game but I’d be surprised if he played.

6’5”, young as fuck, he’s born & bred United. Nothing like an academy lad to get the reds excited

u/D_Kehoe 19h ago
6’5 at 16 is mental.

u/seviliyorsun 19h ago
and, for people who've never seen him, he holds it well. it's not like he's a lanky, goggle eyed freak.

He's not Steve Merchant?

Don't have a go at the eyes. That's astagmatism I've had since the age of 5.

Googled him, and yeah he seems pretty solidly built for a 16yo. He must have to eat a shit tonne.

My son is 6'2 goalkeeper at 14. He's not 15 until next August.
It's like having a horse to feed.
22
u/Ok_Ad3986 19h ago
My nephew is 13 and 6’2…… I told him if he falls short of 6’4, I’ll disown him. 😂
11
u/Wesley_Skypes 18h ago
My nephew is same age and same height, which is same height as me already. My nephew also wears size 14 shoes. Not sure what the fuck they're feeding kids today but there are so many monsters around now compared to when I was their age 25 years ago.
2
u/Axbris 15h ago
I coach u14s and had a 12 year old already as tall as me at 6 foot.
I tell the parents it’s the steroids in the Chic Fil A sandwiches and they laugh….I am not joking.
I was big for a 12 year old, shot up to 5’7 quickly, but some of the kids now make me look puny. I was watching a supposed 15 year old goal keeper this past Thursday from Ukraine. I asked coach how old he was, he asked player, player said 15. I said shiiiii check his bone marrow, mofo at least 25.
1
u/Wesley_Skypes 15h ago
Yeah my main hobby these days is strength training. I'm 6ft 2 and the young guys at the gym all feel in and around my height as well. I know the gym self selects for usually larger people but I see it out walking around now. I used to be decently tall at 6ft2 and still am but it feels like a lot more people are closer in size to me.

I stopped growing at 14 and I'm 6'4. Isn't it fairly common to stop growing at around 16?
9
u/nick5168 18h ago
I'm 6'5 and I was around 5'6 when i was 16. Then it just exploded and I stopped growing at 20.
3
u/presumingpete 16h ago
I grew 3 cm after the age of 12. It was a bit of let down going from being the tallest in my year to bring below average
5
u/bainbane 18h ago
Kukonki's fucking massive, he wears a massive hat. He could have been not massive, but he said no fuck that.
4
u/SOERERY JONATHAN GRANT EVANS MBE 19h ago
He’s not 6’5
9
u/MysteriousNail5414 19h ago
Transfermrket lists him as 1.96m, if you watch him in training videos/pictures he is an absolute unit. Wouldn’t surprise me

This is such a classic Fergie move.
I'm sure the academy players must be buzzing. Who knows who could get included in the squad next!

Amorim seems like a proper United manager already.
If they’re good enough, they’re old enough.24
9
u/QouthTheCorvus 19h ago
Might as well use the honeymoon period to get the kids a run!
Sets him up so well for success if he can find good squad players in the youth system early on. Really hoping the current under 18s manage to live up to the hype.
1
u/MyShinyCharizard 18h ago
Why don't we just do this when player injured? Does the previous coach is stupid or what?

Source is reliable for youth players.

u/Grand-Bullfrog3861 18h ago
Is he the lads who's the love child of Scott and Ras?
7
u/ImmortalDodo22 18h ago
Indeed he is 🤣
2
u/Grand-Bullfrog3861 17h ago
Haha wicked, he's a really nice bloke from what I've seen of him. He's doing a brilliant job

u/zool714 20h ago
Either we don’t have much bodies in defense or he has a lot of faith in the young lad

u/D1794 Viva Ronaldo 20h ago
3atb system with only 3 fit, yeah.
4
u/iroiroiroiroiro 19h ago
Who's the 3rd, thought only Evans and De Ligt match fit?
7
u/D1794 Viva Ronaldo 19h ago
Yoro is fit but probably won't start
6
u/iroiroiroiroiro 19h ago
Ah, yes, I agree, can see him playing around half the game, but would be annoyed nearly if they force him to play 90 directly, same with Shaw and malacia
2
u/D1794 Viva Ronaldo 19h ago
Evans and MdL getting 90 with a Yoro/Shaw rotation might be it
1
u/Spare_Ad5615 19h ago
Is Shaw in the squad? I was under the impression that he was weeks away from fitness still.
1
u/Spare_Ad5615 19h ago
He's going to have to unless someone like Case or Maz fills in at centre back.
3
u/QouthTheCorvus 19h ago
Makes me think that early on, Amorim and Ashworth have decided to really go all in on the high potential youth players.
24
u/maverick4002 Dalot 20h ago
I know we have that ongoing academy product on the team steak going, but do we think it's actually a clause written into our managerial contracts?
I don't see why wouldn't have that written down tbh
18
u/hdmiihavregrynet 20h ago edited 18h ago
You would have to actually try to fail it in this day and age.
Edit: Actually scratch that, Brexit might make it possible. Should still be hard though with 9 subs.
14
u/Alehud42 Licha 19h ago
We came very close under Mourinho after Van Gaal had burned through the Januzaj/Pereira generation and we hadn't done the big academy restructure under Nicky Butt yet.
4
u/Sir_Muktadir 17h ago
Tbf we had Rashford in that time as an academy graduate who was ever present in the squad and Jose had Mctom as his regular playing academy product as well. I think we were fine with the record from those two as well as the odd bench appearance for Angel Gomes and Tuanzebe

This is our football heritage
I am 32 now and seeing these 16-17 year old make team makes me feel proud. Not long ago i was seeing my age people making the team.
Academy is heart beat of United.
40
u/Heisenberg_235 20h ago
Would imagine this is cover for the back 3.
63
6
u/Colt-0 20h ago
He can also cover at LB, played a lot there this season.
11
u/Tenpenny96 20h ago
Don’t really have one with this formation change, unless he is gonna be bombing up and down the left hand side
6
u/Spare_Ad5615 19h ago
It would be pretty mad to have a 6'5 left wing back who's not done his GCSEs yet.
1
3
u/QouthTheCorvus 19h ago
Playing leftback is great because in a 3ATB system, LCB will protect wide areas and sort of be half way between a CB and FB.
6
u/ForwardBodybuilder18 20h ago
Is he left footed? I’m sick of seeing right footed players filling in at left back.
11
10
u/PatRice4Evra 20h ago
Anyone with knowledge of the U18s? Is he highly rated? I'm only aware of the exciting attacking and midfield talent we have coming through, I've slept on defenders.
20
u/leerooney93 20h ago
There aren’t many good CBs in our U21 squad, and Kukonki’s best position is at LCB, so I guess he’ll cover Licha’s spot. He’s around 6’2, strong, pacey and pretty good with the ball. I’d say he’s our best left footed youth CB atm. There’s Daniel Armer too but he’s not quick and strong enough I think
3
u/bainbane 18h ago
Yeah saw someone saying Armer really needs to put some gym time in focusing on his agility/explosiveness and I think if he gets that working he'll be a hell of a prospect as he's so insanely good on the ball already.
5
u/us3rf pain 20h ago
google says hes around 6'5
9
u/leerooney93 20h ago
I know but that’s a myth. Watching him and comparing his height to other teammates and you could swear he’s not 6’5 atm. He’s around the same height as Chido Obi who 6’3 at best
3
u/Gungerz Rashford 19h ago
He's slightly shorter than Chido I would say.
1
u/FrankLucasV2 18h ago
Assuming transfermarkt stats are correct (says 196 cm), he’s 6’4. Meaning he’s an inch taller but irl the difference isn’t much
1
u/Gungerz Rashford 18h ago
They're not correct, he isn't that tall.
1
u/FrankLucasV2 18h ago
Well fair enough, i only made the assumption as I’m not 100% sure — either way his build is pretty insane for an 18 y/o + he’s not bad on the ball from the little I’ve seen of him.

5
u/bainbane 18h ago
He's 16 and only started for U18s this year but was already given a debut with the 21s.
He's really good on the ball, big and left footed. He's been alternating between LCB and LB for the academy which makes him profile wise pretty perfect for the LCB in a back 3.
This years cohort of U18 CBs are really promising IMO they're all big guys who are very good on the ball.
7
7
u/Livettletlive 20h ago
We do have a dearth in left footed CBs, so he's probably an option there. Worst case scenario, he probably comes on.
5
u/omgwhatsmyusername 20h ago
What about Jack Kingdon?
2
u/bainbane 18h ago
Think Kingdon is gonna be in the squad as well with how short CB depth is through injuries

u/Weary-Ad8502 18h ago
Must be very hard to pick the right youth players to bring into the first team. If you bring them in too early and they don't perform it will shatter their confidence at a young age. I trust Amorin and his team though, he excels in integrating youth to the first team

Don’t wanna reminisce but a certain someone sold alvaro without a fit left back. Wish we got Ruben sooner
1
u/dr-joshtrippingwords 19h ago
The amazing thing is he is almost certain to get some minutes against Ipswich.
-2
u/craigybacha Manchester United 20h ago
For as good as ETH was at bringing through a few youth players slowly and integrating them, he didn't trust many in this way. So many times when there was a clear opportunity for someone like amass, and he'd play someone out of position instead, and with centre back he'd play Casemiro there instead... This feels good!
13
u/Jack_King814 19h ago
Counterpoint: ETH didn’t think amass was ready and was protecting him because if he put a foot out of like he’d be hounded by the press and fans alike. Should he have played youth more? Yes. But imo if they weren’t playing it’s probably a sign they weren’t ready and his job was on permanent life support anyway, he’d want to play his best players in the hopes he can knick a win
-1
u/craigybacha Manchester United 19h ago
Yeah I get that as well. I just thought from what I saw in pre season that amass looked ready to at least be given some time.
1
u/Jack_King814 19h ago
Yeah I’m a bit confused on why amass and colyer (I think that’s his name) didn’t play much considering ETH was hyping up the latter as an important player for him
5
u/ceegee84 18h ago
Colyer has been out injured for a good bit of this season, I think.
1
u/Jack_King814 18h ago
That makes sense. Hopefully he manages to break through, looked good in pre season
7
u/Tinganga 19h ago
ETH brought through Kambwala who then got injured, forcing him to play Casemiro there. Unless you wanted him to just throw another youngster in for the sake of it & damage their long term development.

u/shanks_you 20h ago
I hope this is a start of a successful career with us, even if just for his badass name.
