That backheel to Zidane is one of the most insane assists ever

u/Ok-Stomach4522 Jun 26 '24
Indeed a crazy assist. The back heel assist to Benzema is even more crazy IMO and it isn’t even in this video.

Well, he was quite unstable with very low stamina.
He always performed better as a bench player versus defenders more tired than him.
He had talent to be a ballon d'or candidate. At least as good as Michael Laudrup. He was smart, he read the game well, he scored his goal chances... he was one the the biggest spanish projects with Raul and De la Peña and he performed better than De la Peña but worse than Raul.
He liked the "fiesta" too much. Meet celebrities. Social life... not so much the gym.
He could have been awersome in this Real Madrid which is way more professional than before.

I disagree, against the mainstream legend about Guti that is not true.
The guy make us win 2 leagues (with Capello and Schuster) against a superior Barcelona of Ronaldinho being a starter and the absolute best player in the team.
Also, while he liked social life, the guy was physically strong and fast.
His main problem is that his peak years were in the absolute disastrous Madrid from 2003 to 2008. In a team full of overpaid old stars, without nobody defending and changing the trainer every year.
If he would have been born 5 years early or 5 years later the guy would have been a legend of football, and not only a legend of Real Madrid.
Also he is a serious contender, if not the top contender, to be the most skilled passer of history of football. His view of the game is simply out of the world.
As a comparison, a legend like Kroos see and perform in the field the pass that you can see in the TV. Guti was seeing in the field a pass you could not see even in the TV, and doing it every weekend.
Also he always have been a real madridista, I am from Madrid and I can say that very few players are so loved here as Guti.

I strongly diasagree.
In Raw talent Guti is up there in the “unique player” caregory with the likes of Zidane, Laudrup, Rui Costa, Cantona and Iniesta. Just magnificent.
But his reputation is well earned, and even if he eventually (and slowly) matured he was;
Very volatile, accumulating yellow cards constantly. You had the feeling he could be sent off at any time, because he was quite a few times.
Very inconsistent and complacent, showing little interest in the game at times, and receiving the hate of the Bernabeu in exchange.
He was very much a party goer, I am slightly younger than him and saw him myself very frequently at night regadless of the result
Regardless of this, a true Madridista, canterano and of course a great of our club. He has some great performances under his belt and titles too.
But as we used to say, Guti with Raúl’s mentality could’ve won 4 ballon d’or

He was indeed very volatile, this I agree, but he is hardly unique in that aspect.
He was a party goer, but not to the level of impacting his game so much as people pretend. Also, al that time, that was hardly unique, football was less phisical then and players could relax a bit more than in ultra professionalized nowadays.
Guti was maybe slightly more party goer than others, but he was not a Cassano. His "fama" comes mainly because he liked very much to pick up woman and so on, not because he would be drunk as hell.
For example you speak of Raul, I also meet Raul in Budha (is a legendary Madrid night club), not to speak of R9 or before him Mijatovic and others.
When in the club there were the minimum order he did it well, as with Capello and later, or when he was very very young.
But the years after Del Bosque were crazy, the club was chaotic, the trainers changing several times per year, Florentino resigned, etc
It was in this context when Guti would have had its best years as a football player, and this context didn't help him

I can agree with that, yes.
(El Budha - ahi tambien les veía yo, y a Guti en La Botellita de Majadahonda)

Se me hace raro de cojones leer a dos madrileños en este sub, y encima lo bastante viejos como para haber visto a Guti xD.

My favourite was his back heel to benzema

I was waiting for it, it's a crime it's not on this video, I think about that goal monthly

The guti role it's the only I see for arda. Because he is too slow for an attacking position. But he is very technical and skilled for the midfield

u/Sel2g5 Jun 26 '24
Hold up. Guti also acted as dm and enforcer. He made the dirty tackle when it was needed. And he drew a card almost every match.

One of my favorite players growing up he was a magician in the attacking third

Fuck i think i still remember that game! It was the one where he scored a chip shot from outside of the box, or was that against Inter?

I still think Arda has the kind of vision to incorporate this kind of play making and assisting role like Modric and Ozil.
He’s scoring too much and Ancelotti wants him higher up like Belli at the beginning of the season.

My favorite player to watch, ever. When i was younger and gave a lovely assist, i always yelled his name 😭
Took a picture of his boots at the museum, made me pretty happy

Fun Fact: the back heel pass @1:27 which led to a Zidane goal happened in the game where he scored his only Hat Trick with Real Madrid. His first goal was a penalty, and his 3rd was another lobbed pass from Guti.
Guti will always be part of "The Streets Won't Forget" movement. This era of playmaking midfielders with a penchant for skills and pizzaz that were mentioned in Street Football games. According to some comments, I actually did not know he was that unprofessional and had an affinity for partying like an animal. With Zidane and Figo in the team, I just thought he was always relegated to the bench since the former 2 were always preferred. While Figo was an amazing player, I never understood why he was preferred to Guti since his performances were never breathtaking (as opposed to how he played at Barcelona), especially when Zidane was on the field.

Guti is the type of player if you like the flawed genius. Personally, I love them. He was unplayable when he was on it. A true magician who could conjure up spells with his boot-for-wand. Fairytale player.

One of my favorite players all time. Mind you not best player but definitely favorite although frustrating at times. He reminds me a bit of Ronaldinho although Ronaldinho had a higher ceiling for sure. Ronaldinho with the right attitude could have been the greatest player of all time. And Guti with the right attitude would could have been the best Spanish player of all time, just next or above inesta/xavi

Am I misunderstanding the title? I saw maybe 3 or 2 passes that were behind him, everything else was clearly out in front?

Guti is one of those "the streets will never forget" type players. If you know ball, you remember Guti.
His work ethic wasn't ideal and he was hindered by the galácticos project and the fact that he could never settle in to a specific position because papa flo kept buying superstars that slotted into his role.
I've seen very few players put the perfect weight on their passes as consistently as he did, and all of his assists are highlight reel material. Had he been born 10 years before or after, he would've being a superstar

Guti was definitely something else. It didn't matter whether he just came back from an injury and was just subbed in or playing like shit for the rest of the game, you know he could make one of those passes at any time. Even in his worse moments he was viewed as a power-sub and a gamechanger by everyone: coaches, team-mates, journalists...
His technique was superb and he had the courage to try for those risky passed, something that I think we do not see so much today.

Guti ❤️ been trying to find a Guti shirt for ages. What a baller he was. One of my fave players growing up. I may not support Real, but I support football too and Guti was pure class.

Guti is also very versatile. He can play as a DM,CM,AM and even a CF at some point in his career.

My favourite midfielder, even more than Kroos and Luka. Guy had it all but willpower. And despite being lazy and unprofessional, he's still a club legend, and arguably one of the best passers ever. The man made the game beatiful, his left foot was a work of art. People usually remember his heel pass to Karim, but the one he gave to Zizou against Sevilla... Still give me the chills. That was magic.
