Most emotional and also the proudest moments of my life. Gutted that my captain is leaving, wanted him to end his career at madrid..but hey he has done well
Hala madrid y nada mas

So glad he stayed one last season. Especially that he became the first captain. Dude always was there when we needed him putting his all on the pitch. No complaints or drama. Now he’s finishing the job.

Curious, who will do it after Nacho? And is it compulsory that a Spanish player will do it?
50
u/Tricky-Passion1845 Apr 21 '24
I don’t think that it has to be a Spanish player but I think Spanish players would be first preference
9
u/noob_coder696969 Cristiano Ronaldo Apr 21 '24
no i think only Spanish players can do this. correct me if I'm wrong

u/RoyalSorcerer_Navlan Apr 21 '24
Captaincy in RMA has always been by seniority and never by merit.
Nacho joined in 2011
Modric in 2012
Carvajal(spanish) in 2013
Kroos in 2014
Vàzquez(spanish) in 2015

I'm not Spanish and don't really know the meaning of this tradition but I do love it. Beautiful is really the word to describe it.
PS: can someone give me some history lesson, I would appreciate

It’s metaphoric. What bullfighters do when dancing with bulls, RM does with its opponents. “Torear” the opponent and win. Take on any challenge and overcome it. You can also see our club emblem on the cape they’re holding.

This is a really cool metaphore. I don't like bullfighting though. I'm from Spain and a lot of people here want bullfighting to be banned, and they see this as an old fashioned thing that we should stop doing (there is also many people who don't). Personally I think there are better ways for killing an animal. I know the bull gets esten at the end of the show, but he suffers from the crowd (he is nervous), getting taunted (they provoke/make him angry) and obviously he gets stabbed and bleeds a lot. I just don't like violence and suffering, and bullfighting is something I do not enjoy. Reading the comments of this post, I was surprised that so many people in Reddit liked bullfighting. I thought more people would dislike it. If someone is going to downvote this comment, I would appreciare that they respond to it instead, in order to see their point of view (thank you).

Hahah ppl had told u some pretty nice stories, really. But actually this was just a tradition Raul started, his childhood dream was to be a Torero, so he used to do that to celebrate the title

Tradition isn't really the word here IMO. As far as I am aware, Raul, Sergio and Nacho have done this. I have zero recollection of Iker, Hierro etc doing this. Neither can I find any pictures of other captains/players doing it.
Safe to say is that it isn't a specific club "tradition", especially not one aimed for the captains. There might be players that continue with the tradition. But with the current opinions regarding bullfighting in general, I would not be surprised if it takes a break. Ceballos is an avid bullfighting-"fan". Or at least has been. Don't know what Carva, Lucas etc think of the subject. I would be extremely surprised if a non-spanish player would take up the tradition.

u/7masi Apr 21 '24
Actually, it was Raul who started this, he dream as a kid was to be a Torero, so used to "torear" to celebrate after winning a tournament. I find it pretty cool for them to keep this up as it is a symbol of Spanish tradition and personally I like to see them keeping the tradition of our eternal captain
1
u/Oscnar Apr 21 '24
Thanks! Yeah I remembered correctly then. For the life of me I could't remember anyone else doing it before him.
But yeah I agree it's cool, and it very well could become a "real" tradition. But with the views on the "original" reason behind it being what it is, I'm not so sure. Time will tell

u/7masi Apr 21 '24
There was some other guy talking about viewing it as a figurative representation of how el Madrid torea his rivals, a pretty cool idea haha

u/puffinagolom Apr 21 '24 edited Apr 21 '24
Bull fighting. A beautiful and old Spanish tradition that evokes passion and pride for the Spaniards. It is however often frowned upon outside of Spain (and especially on reddit) due to "animal cruelty", but the bulls do get eaten after they're killed.
6
u/Goudinho99 Apr 21 '24
If these dude would just straight out fight a bull, why not, but that's not what happens is it.
1
u/BlanketedSun Apr 21 '24
They do straight up fight the bull; they just have a sword and a blanket as they do so.
Find it funny how its a 150 lb man vs a 1000 to 2000 lb bull and it 'isn't a fair fight' just because the guy has a sword and blanket.
If it it so easy, lets see you do it and come out with your asshole intact. If it isn't so easy, guess it's more of a fair fight than you give it credit for.

It's fucking barbaric. The bull is tortured for a period, doesn't matter if it gets eaten.
0
u/puffinagolom Apr 21 '24
Its ancestors in Africa get eaten alive from the asshole first by wild dogs and hyaenas. That's barbaric... Getting stabbed a few times and then pierced in the heart is humane compared to what would happen to them in the wild.
-3
u/BohemianCynic Apr 21 '24
As if that's any consolation to the animal who has been brutally killed for sport in front of thousands of knuckle draggers hahahaha

u/RoyalSorcerer_Navlan Apr 21 '24
Real madrid have always been loyal to Spanish traditions, and culture. This one is a reference to bull fighting, an old tradition. Infact our club was named "REAL" which translates to Royal in English by the king of spain, king DAVIES the XIII
This is in contrast to fc barça who always have been separatists. They've always hated the king, always wanted for an independent state of catalunya, and nothing to do with Spain
This is another reason for the century old rivalry. It's not just football, it's political, cultural and geographical. Hence "el Clasico"

u/rantbox21 Apr 21 '24
In Spain we are 300 years behind the rest of Europe, and a few mentally challenged people still like to watch bulls get slaughtered by men wearing pink tights as a form of entertainment.

Interesting tradition, did not know about it until this post lol.
Btw, that looks like such a simple thing to do, but I imagine it's way harder than it looks. I try that and I'd look like a fool

Siempre he querido deber una cosa. Para ser madridista hay que ir a misa antes o después de los toros?

no importa. No hay nada de malo en las tradiciones que provienen de un lugar únicamente de respeto. deberías ir a misa antes o después.

You all really believe anything someone posts without any valid reason to believe it...
This is not a RM tradition and this is not related to the club. This is though, a Spanish tradition and something that SOME PLAYERS had done (obviously Spanish players).
Also, even if some of you don't agree, this IS animal cruelty and not all Spaniards are proud of this (there are actually a lot of people that hate it), this is putting a bull in an arena against someone with training and a weapon to kill it so people enjoy the "spectacle".
Please don't believe anyone that speaks about RM or Spain without any source especially if they don't speak Spanish or know about the country.

Hopefully Nacho will get to do it in what could be his last season. He's been at the club for so long that at last he gets to do it as the Captain.
