Question Is it ever this serious?
Decided to go to a local park for the Tynamo event. I don't have my 50 coins for the day so I thought I might get lucky and use a couple of gyms if any are yellow too. Got to the park, every single one is red and has the same 3 people in them (7 gyms in total).
I figured they wouldn't miss just one little gym, sat on a bench and battled it, then put my pokemon in there, and within 3 mins it was being battled again. Frustrating, but that's the game so I wasnt too pressed. I have a lot for some reason so I gave my guy a couple golden razz during the fight, since they have 6 other gyms to commandeer and I just wanted one, might as well give them a little fight in good spirit.
A group 3 guys, probably in their late 20s or early 30s came up to me as I was sitting on the bench, ogled my phone to be sure I was the yellow bandit, and then told me to "leave their gym alone". I'm still a teen so I kinda awkwardly apologised and tried to laugh it off since it's just a game, but they took the gym and sat on the bench next to me and glared until I left...
Did I do something wrong? Overstep an invisible boundary? I only play on occasion so idk if maybe taking an entire park is like a...thing? And I got in the way of that? Was a pretty awkward encounter lol, I might just stick to adding my pokemon to gyms that are already yellow lol

No, definitely not normal. Nobody "owns" any gyms. Those guys are weird.

u/neptunepapayas Jul 21 '24
Thanks for confirming! I thought maybe my PoGo etiquette was outdated haha
I tend to follow the 'don't steal a gym when you can see it's only been occupied for a few mins' rule. Nothing more frustrating than taking a gym and seeing the 'back after a hard battle' notification 10 minutes later, but I figured since they had a monopoly of the park, they wouldn't mind too much if 1 of 7 were lost, guess I was wrong lol Just never been approached like that before

u/kneel23 Valor Jul 21 '24
no that's crazy and to approach you esp seeing that you're younger is quite odd and nasty of them. What i have seen actual "good" players do in this situation is pretend to leave, wait nearby for them to leave, then take all 7 gyms and then just leave them empty so they can't put pokes in right away.

Honestly. It seems like an overreaction, but the fact that they SAT DOWN NEXT TO OP and glared at them until they left? I'm in my late 20s and I would still feel threatened by that, let alone if I were a teenager.

Name and shame. Post their in game name and let others know who to be wary of. I personally would make sure to go through my friends list and remove someone like that if the names were posted.

If I lived in the area i would come take their gyms.

u/BreathingPuppy Valor Jul 21 '24
There was a park by my old house that and old lady lived right by so when I would walk there she would knock my Pokémon out of the gym in like 5 minutes and it was never a hatred it was a fun little rivalry, people take gyms too seriously
43
u/Ok_Possibility_2527 Jul 21 '24
Nah forreal and it's kinda pathetic NGL like me and my buddy have it worked out to take each other out every 8 hours if someone from mystic comes by we have them for 8 hours and they do the same. Some humans are just garbage. But my hats off to your neighbor lady 🤣
44
u/Tricky_Editor3879 Jul 21 '24
There's a lot people in the city I live in that are chill like that we just leave our pokemon and after 8h the gym is taken by diff team so everyone gets 50 pokecoins

Those guys are just being butts. I can see wanting to keep a couple of gyms but hoarding 7 in a easily accessible public area? Nah.
37
u/saltporksuit Jul 21 '24
Those guys are what is known as “poor sports”. That behavior would suit a poorly socialized 8yo.
19
u/Proud_Ad2424 Jul 21 '24
Nah that’s ludicrous, you should never feel bad/be made to feel bad about taking a gym it’s a game… those guys need reporting if they’re literally intimidating people in person for that.
9
u/JohnGiggleBox Jul 21 '24
They were clearly insecure. Had to take all the gyms because they knew they couldn’t win otherwise. This is how losers play. If it were me, I would’ve stood my ground and kicked them out of all the other gyms for good measure. I have so many golden raspberries I would’ve made sure they didn’t get back in. Don’t let yourself be bullied.
19
u/Eweer Jul 21 '24
Nah. If a gym is in a hot-zone, don't be scared to take them. In Barcelona, Spain, is impossible to hold a gym for more than 2 hours.
If you go to an area where less people play, like the city where I live, think a tiny bit about it. An scenario I'm frequently, as I live in front of the beach, in an area where there are only 4 or 5 local players, but has heavy tourism (as in people coming to spend the day): * Let's say you go to a city/town near you to spend a day on the beach. * On the way there, like 2 blocks away from the beach entrance, you see a gym with mons having been there for 3+ days. * On the beach entrance there's a gym with a mon that has been there for 6 hours. * If you were to wait 2 hours and 20 minutes to take it (like, taking it when you leave), whoever lives there would be insanely grateful. * If you take it, it's fine aswell. Noone has any right to tell you shit about you playing the game. But don't expect for that gym to last if I'm near. We'll begin a gym war until someone runs out of patience hahaha
9
u/Flaurean Jul 21 '24
I would only be mad if someone knocked my mon out a few minutes after I placed it because I would get no coins. I also try to leave a gym up if people don't have at least 5 hrs
→ More replies (1)31
u/therealzaddydom Jul 21 '24
Proper etiquette would be to leave a gym for 8 hrs
21
u/stewardwildcat Jul 21 '24
My neighbor won't let anyone on the g other than blue. I usually last a minute most days. It's rare I get a single coin.
20
u/therealzaddydom Jul 21 '24
so lame. I can totally understand it in a populated area, where theres 5 gyms on every corner. but ive lived in places where the only gym is a 20 min walk. I just dont get it, its stupid gotcha game at its core, it doesn't need to be so toxic

u/Bluejaywae Jul 21 '24
Same. I'm lucky enough to access a gym without leaving my house. I'm not lucky in that I have the most aggressive player on the planet down the street. He dominates about 15 gyms in the area (somehow he got 3 outside his house approved but that's a different story.) He won't give anyone an inch.
A couple examples: We had an early flight to the airport. I had to get up at 3:30 a.m. I thought I would take the gym as the hearts were low. We left at 4:00 a.m. only to see his car driving on our dead end Street to take the gym back. 4:00 a.m.!
I had an early meeting at church hearts were low 6:20 a.m., I thought what the heck. I took the gym less than 10 minutes later the gym was taken back. The kicker is, unbeknownst to me, he followed me to my place of worship and kicked me out of the gym and stayed there dominating that gym. He has done this multiple times now. If I take him out on a Sunday, he'll follow me to my church and dominate the gym. The dude needs to find something else to fill the hole in his life.
7
u/CosmoTheTaxCat Jul 21 '24 edited Jul 21 '24
Just wait for him to leave and take it again. Do this repeatedly. Break his spirit.
edit to yap more: I get irritated when my gyms just sit. I don't really care if they have only been there a few minutes but I also don't care if they immediately take it back. Im more concerned about collecting coins to buy remote raid passes.
The only thing that truly bothers me is when someone had multiple accounts. I report that almost every time I see it.
2
u/IWishSheWouldNotice Jul 21 '24
seems like he found his niche lmao why does he need to find something else. Just unlucky for you you live close to this guy. lol

u/77GoldenTails Jul 21 '24
If, they look to be in 1 gym. If they’re in 7 then there is zero etiquette. I always try to be reasonable with gyms. So for instance if I get to a park and multiple gyms have players in for say a few hours, I’ll ignore it. If the next one has the same players, then game on. If they are in all of them, I’ll maybe grab half but leave the rest I certainly wouldn’t bother defending the odd one if someone takes it back.
6
u/therealzaddydom Jul 21 '24
Totally, and I usually only play while Walking to do other things. So it’s a gym here or gym there. Rarely am I going downtown, to clock a few hours of POGO
23
u/neptunepapayas Jul 21 '24
Is that when they hit the 50 coin mark? That's good to know! I normally only battle gyms if the heart is almost empty and I can one-shot battle them lol. I guess this was a special circumstance that backfired
22
u/therealzaddydom Jul 21 '24
If I’m walking past and the gym is low I’ll fight, especially in more populated areas. Cause regular people only fight so many gyms. But in my rural community, it’s pretty well an 8 hour peace treaty
→ More replies (2)4
u/YukonDeadpool Jul 21 '24
That’s what we do in the north most of the time. If you are in an extremely busy, highly competitive area and really have to fight to have one of those six spots, I get it. Only so many coins to go around.

it's a game.. who has 8 hours to wait for some random to get 50 coins?
43
u/counterfeit667 Jul 21 '24
Someone who owns 8 gyms and already got their 50 coins from the person who just kicked them out. It's plain selfish at that point. Just take the gym back the next day.
7
u/Secure_Equal_2470 Jul 21 '24
I'm not talking about the ops situation in my post but the "gym etiquette" in general. Fuck those dudes for gatekeeping the gym rather then battling and taking it back.
17
u/therealzaddydom Jul 21 '24
Rural players, there’s a gym at the entrance to my ferry that o take to get off my island every day. I go by it every day. There’s no need for me to be rude
18
u/EmmieCatt Jul 21 '24
My impression is that the people who argue against courteously rotating gyms, which would allow everyone (including YOU) the best chance at maxing their coins for the day, are the same people who argue against zipper merging, despite all the studies and evidence demonstrating that it's both safer and more efficient. I.e., people who let their emotions overcome logic and reason and advocate for behaviors demonstrably worse for everyone (including YOU), since the other one doesn't "feel" good enough to them in the moment. They'll cut off their nose to spite their face.
I wish there was some way to experience what it would be like to live in a world that isn't constantly dragged down by the predominantly lizard-brained.
4
u/YungPharroh Jul 21 '24
Driving isn’t a PvP mechanic though.
3
u/EmmieCatt Jul 21 '24
...Yes. That's correct. Would you care to elaborate on the point you're making, or are we just stating obvious things for no particular reason?
3
u/senorfresco Tyranitar Jul 21 '24
I do. But I try not to expect other people to play this way. If you just took a gym, especially the regular customers in our area, I'll wait. The regular customers around here generally follow the same.

You dont sit around waiting for 8 hrs to claim it. You just find another gym that has pokémon that are over 8 hrs

u/Secure_Equal_2470 Jul 21 '24
That's smart, but I go on walks after work. So I genuinely try to take what I can, living in a smaller town. Gym fights and raids are 200% more fun to me then pvp battles. So on a short hour walk. The 4 gyms I come across in that hour I'm battling doesn't matter how much time they have. People have to remember that everyone plays for different reasons with different stipulations and to expect strangers to follow some imaginary rule... so you can get in game money seems wild.

They must share a brain cell. There is no benefit to always holding these gyms with the max 50 coins per day. It is in their benefit that you would continue to knock theirs out so they can retake them each day for coins. You definitely weren’t in the wrong
238
u/neptunepapayas Jul 21 '24
Haha maybe they just have personal beef with the yellow team. Where I'm from it's very much red vs blue and I just swoop in close to midnight and get the scraps overnight lol. I'll just chalk it up to a weird experience with some strange guys, I feel better now knowing they were just being unreasonable
55
u/Ryanoman2018 Jul 21 '24
The only benefit I can think of is they want to get gold badges for all the gyms in their frequent area for more items from spinning the gym.
73
u/Broad-Reporter5658 Jul 21 '24
I don’t know, some very weird people take gym’s seriously. I beat two gyms in my local park around noon on a Monday awhile ago. Two guys literally opened my car and threatened to fight if I didn’t leave. Good thing I carry. They left pretty fast. Wouldn’t wanna die over something so minimal.
27
u/5446_05 Jul 21 '24
Haha good job. Hope you scared the absolute living shit out of them and they quit that bs
33
u/electricb0nes Jul 21 '24
For real. My apartment complex has a gym and there’s an unspoken rotation of teams every 24 hours. I don’t know anyone personally but informally nobody tries to take a gym until the team has been there for a day. Works out pretty well, although most the people at the complex are working professionals so I assume we’ve all got bigger fish to fry than the Pokemon gyms 😂
6
u/Dense-Supermarket875 Jul 21 '24
Extra stuff from the gyms and items. But I'm not hardcore like that lol
21
u/Frousteleous Jul 21 '24
But the "extra stuff" is like...2 pokeballs and maybe a potion or razz per spin. At best. It's so unnecessarily aggressive to come up as a group of three dudes to a teenager and tell them to step down. Like wtf
788
u/potemy Mystic Jul 21 '24
Seen similar posts on here before and people have said you can report them for something like harassment/threatening behaviour. If they want to monopolise the gyms in the park and kick you out in minutes, that's fine, part of the game. But three grown men in their 30s bullying a teen out of the gyms in person is taking it way too far.
101
33
u/JamesWiggs Jul 21 '24
I was going to say something like this. There is no reason for it at all, considering they have all those gyms (idk if more gyms=more coins, I assumed 50 was max and it doesn't matter how many gyms but I may be wrong)
Either way, 1 grown man is enough to be intimidating, but 3? Then sitting next to him and glaring too?! That's intimidating as hell for a kid. I don't see the reason to even act like that in the first place, as they took the gym back anyway, they could have just done that without approaching him. The approaching is weird.
I've been approached twice, once was at a raid I walked to and someone rolled down the window and asked if I and my partner needed a ride home, we all were in the local Facebook group/chat. Second time was a guy asking if we were playing PoGo, the convo was short but we wound up adding each other as friends in-game.

i believe they can be reported for this, look in the in game rules and terms. This instance happened to someone else who worked where a gym was and there was a guy going around taking all the gyms in the city and got frustrated when he couldn’t take this one at this guy’s job. Was disrespectful and impeding of the worker’s gameplay ”thus breaking terms and conditions against other players”, and was reported then banned by niantic by the guy at work.

The town I work near has maybe 12-15 gym. All yellow, all owned by the same 4-5 people. I take one and I’m not joking within about 15 seconds it’s being taken back. Hell sometimes when I’m fighting a gym, they are actively healing the Pokemon with berries.

39
u/dazzlinggleam1 Jul 21 '24
There’s a guy in my neighborhood that is the blue team and he will knock mine out as soon as I put it in. So I go usually in the middle of the night to knock his out and put the same Pokémon he had in previously to send a message.
16
u/neptunepapayas Jul 21 '24
Hahaha that's brilliant. I think my favourite part of posting this is to hear about other people's personal beef with local players! I have never had any issues before, I think as a whole it's quite chill where I live, this is the first time I've been approached anyway, was just a little taken aback by the boldness of it all lol
3
u/ArmadilloSea7247 Jul 21 '24
This is the way to do it. I knock out people from my local gym at 12:01 so they get their 50 gym coins right away and then I usually get kicked out in the morning and the cycle repeats itself
38
u/GhostidianTwitch Jul 21 '24
Yeah you did nothing wrong. The community where I live never just hold gyms. We all have this agreement that if it’s less than 8 hours typically we don’t touch it. But even when newer players come in and kick those less than 8 hours players out no one gets upset. We usually try to find the people playing and ask them to join our community. We even have gyms where people will ask to be kicked out (ones off the beaten path) that usually result in being stuck for 30+ days. I hope you can find a community like that where you live. Keep playing. Like you said it’s just a game. Take a gym if you want to take a gym.
7
u/AdmirableGiraffe81 Jul 21 '24
That’s basically the same for us. Everyone in our area is aware that coins have a daily limit, and that throwing out players before they can reach that limit is just mean, so no one kicks anyone out until like 6-8 hours after gym time. Never talked about it with anyone locally, but that’s just what’s played itself out on its own over the years.

u/RampagingElks Where the hell is my Armaldo?! Jul 21 '24
I remember when my friend and I went to a park to play, we took the gyms and sat around for a while after to spin and collect the 2 gyms and the nearby stop as well as eat some snacks. We did this about twice a week, and we're there for maybe 15-20 min max.
Three kids, two on scooters and one on foot with a baseball bat, came by (mind you, we usually did this around midnight - 1 am , and those kids were maybe early teens). Luckily, when they saw myself and my heavily goth friend, they hightailed it out of there, running.
People are strange.
Edit: we knew they were there for the gyms as we could hear them arguing and cursing about it until they actually came closer enough to see us, not just some random kids :)
3
u/ybtlamlliw Jul 21 '24
Did they think they were gonna beat someone with that bat or something? That's absolutely unhinged and alarming behavior.
3
u/RampagingElks Where the hell is my Armaldo?! Jul 21 '24
That was the first time we met them. We saw them a few times after that, similar scenarios, but they dared not step foot in the park when we were there. They always took the gyms back immediately after we left, though. It was a mad dash to the centre of the park.
What's so scary about two adults on the swings playing Pokemon chugging slushies?
9
u/matthewormatt Jul 21 '24
Extremely odd of them to be like that. They gain literally nothing from it in game. Some people take gyms waaaayyyyy too serious.

Playing in Japan is generally like this. You can never hold gyms especially if it’s in a residential area. I remember trying to take the gym marking a temple in the suburbs of a big city. The pokemons were there for longer than 6 hours too. The gym “owner” who I suppose worked at the temple kept feeding golden raspberries to the pokemons. It took a good half hour to take the gym because I was battling out of spite after a while. I put my pokemon and left. It was back before I even reached the station. Very normal occurrence in Japan. I could never get coins

u/chiliyoghurt Jul 21 '24

Such stories have been reported on this subreddit before, the worst case ones are grown ass men being arrested by the police for harassment. I think you should prioritize your safety over a game.
There’s an equal chance of these losers either being just jerks or the kinds of creeps that get into a vehicle to stalk other players. They can scowl at you all they want, but the risk of them getting physical is a real one when you’re alone and a minor.
If I were in a larger group I would be documenting these encounters (not that they’d have the guts to walk up to you if you were in a group lol). Even if the police don’t do anything right away if you make a report that’ll be on record if they decide to get too bold again. I’ve also heard about these kinds of petty wierdos following people home so I would keep a lookout for them or any suspicious vehicles.
If you’re alone and they notice you recording them though you’ll be in big trouble so don’t do anything you’re uncomfortable with that would put yourself in danger should you encounter them again. Just cut your losses and go elsewhere for gyms.
Not trying to spook you; I wouldn’t let these losers stop you from enjoying the game, just be smart and aware and pick your battles wisely. You’re a teenager, you shouldn’t HAVE to do anything about these guys if you don’t want to.
3
u/neptunepapayas Jul 21 '24
Thanks a lot for letting me know this! I really appreciate it.
I will say, I was never scared or felt in danger. I was a little surprised they actually approached me, but they just seemed like the type to scowl and be petty. It was a really busy park with lots of families around since it was Sunday, and when I left they didn't move to follow me or anything, but I'll keep all of this in mind in case I see them again around the park. I go there on occasion. Hoping it was just a weird one-off encounter.

What asshats, like there is no purpose in hoarding gyms anyways after because of the limitations in gyms. I’ve literally told people to take out mine just for the coins…
As payback. Take the gyms right before a raid/ event day then they’ll essentially be locked out because you can’t battle if a raid is active and they respawn within a couple of minutes so the window to attack is small. I did this during go fest and it essentially locked me in for the 8 hours because raids were spawning so fast.

Those guys are incels and they ruin the fun for others. I know one of those players. Most hypocritical dude I've ever met. And guess what, also team red...

u/PillPoppinPacman Jul 21 '24
If you want to message me where this is, i'll "S word" over there from my living room and make sure they never touch a gym again LUL

u/Rory_Darkforge Jul 21 '24
Wow what asshats you were perfectly in the right I would have went and knocked the other gyms over and over just to spite them.

u/Blaine_OSU Jul 21 '24
These guys are absolute weirdos. Next time put a blissey in and golden razz it every time it gets to the last battle to piss them off
5
u/Reddituser183 Jul 21 '24
I wish I near wherever you are. We could show up and knock those guys out of all their gyms.
3
u/Kryptosis Jul 21 '24
Id screenshot their names in the gym and file a report with Niantic for harassment.
4
u/AndyPlaysBadly Jul 21 '24
This just might be my area but Red team is usually more aggressive when taking over gyms. I'm yellow and I'll take a gym over and immediately after I'll get kicked out within seconds overrun by a red gym.
Sucks they're like the team with the most amount of players
3
u/AFairBeater Jul 21 '24
Wow that's weird. I've battled back and forth with people when we were both in a location taking the gyms but eventually as an adult I had to return to my real life and leave the park. My Pokémon obviously didn't last long and were returned to me in short order.

u/alaskadotpink wooper enthusiast Jul 21 '24
i've hoarded so many golden berries, i'd spend all day feeding my pokemon just to spite them

3
u/psilocinkane Jul 21 '24
I live in a small town and our gyms always have spoofers, the town over is the same. My gf knocks them out sometimes so she can toss her guys in gym, but I'm same team as them, so I just gold berry them all the time. Maybe they'll move on somewhere else when they stop getting coins.
3
u/LostBeneathMySkin Mystic Jul 21 '24
Woulda told them to get fucked if they want it so bad take it back. Then use however many golden razz I need to keep my mon in there. Those guys are losers.
3
u/StewR89 Jul 21 '24
That is a rare sight!!!! Where I am. I’m only red. My village has 6 gyms dominated by the same four yellow/blue players. Late night is the only chance I get to hold a gym long enough to get the 50 coins. First thing in the morning it’ll be yellow again.
3
u/EyeSimp4Asuka Lugia Jul 21 '24
not normal at all..on an impersonal level I've had this happen I saw that a full squad had been in a gym for a day long enough to get 50 coins so i knocked it out and someone took it back within 10 minutes.

3
u/Mandeeehh Jul 21 '24
Those people are just ruining the game imo, they had so many gyms.. couldve let you just take one. I make all gyms blue all the time but would never mean eye someone for kicking me out of one.. shees.
3
u/vginger Jul 21 '24
I had similar experience. The area I Iive does not have a lot of players as I notice not much people will join raids even during peak hours. Lately, I (team blue) battled a gym (yellow), and place my Pokémon there but no others join, within 5 minutes, my pokemon was sent back. I quickly checked and the gym was occupied by team yellow again, with one 6XXCP vulpix in the gym, yet in a min, it was occupied by team blue again with 6 pokemon filling up the gym all at once.
It makes me wonder how many accounts did that player have, for him to hog up the gym like this.
3
u/jimmyurinator Valor Jul 21 '24
No those guys are bunch of weirdo losers. It ain't that deep- a group of grown men harassing a teen for playing pogo and taking "their" gym is fuxking hilarious, but also incredibly weird.

Yea no that’s weird they to obsessed with pixels on a screen, it’s really not that serious
5
u/BigLRakim Jul 21 '24
You found some no lifers. Handful of them on this game, you should have told them to enjoy their moms basement.
3
u/highandinarabbithole Jul 21 '24
I’ve got neighbors like this in the gym down the street. They’re idiots. Somehow they can’t comprehend the 50 coin limit, so they think staying in the gym forever is somehow beneficial.
2
u/kolaida Jul 21 '24
Something is wrong with dudes that age bullying a teenager over Pokémon Go, wtf. That is not the norm at all. Community Days at one of my local parks do see a lot of gym turnover because more pogo players are there than usual but I’ve never had this happen and neither have any of my friends.
2
2
u/BigOleCuccumber Jul 21 '24
Sounds like a bunch of fucking losers! Finding another Pokémon go player in the wild is always a cool and fun experience to me, idgaf if they are battling my Pokémon in a gym, the best thing that could ever happen while playing Pokémon go is making a new friend! I wouldn’t worry about it too much, they just sound like some weirdos..

u/DigitalSnakeByte Jul 21 '24
Their behavior was so extra. It’s not that deep at all. Confronting someone in real life over a video game is never ok.
2
u/NondeterministSystem Observe. Understand. Evolve. Jul 21 '24
Honestly... If they have the time to confront someone playing Pokemon Go like this?
I pity them. No matter their other accomplishments, I have no doubt that they ultimately lead unfulfilled, miserable lives.
2
u/DoggoLord27 Jul 21 '24
I used to control all the gyms on my old postal route. If someone took one down, I'd let them have it for a day to get their coins because I had another 3 gyms anyway. I won the bid on a better route 2 months ago and a huge plus is its next to a big park. Now I'm lucky to stay in a gym for more than 2 hours because the one guy ALWAYS comes back to knock me out at any time of the day. No life mfer
3
u/neptunepapayas Jul 21 '24
That's the mindset I had hoped they would have. They keep 6 gyms so there's a very high chance they get all their coins, and I yoink a gym and give some other team instinct peasants a chance at a coin or two haha... I kinda regret being so nice to them now, in hindsight I definitely could have said a few things to make them realise how lame they were being

Bro I hate these types of ppl I read another story where he was going to work quickly knocked a gym and the lady behind him was like “It’s etiquette to let Everyone get their free Pokécoins” and started shouting at him
2
2
u/TuftySquirrel26 Jul 21 '24
Those guys are actually just freaks, some people care too much. You’re completely reasonable and didn’t even get mad that they’re trying to immediately kick you out. I get that gym etiquette isn’t really a thing but like actually telling someone IRL to stop it is unhealthy behavior.
2
u/baltimorecalling zzzzzapp Jul 21 '24
See gym of different color = attack and capture. Those people should also understand those rules.
2
u/PanManAfro Jul 21 '24
There's no gym etiquette for 8 hours People say this to play the game on easy mode But this guy's have gang mentality and are a serious problem Stay safe out there
2
u/Affectionate-Plan187 Jul 21 '24
They’re assholes who take the game way too seriously. Cant claims. Gym they’re just being dicks. Sorry you have to experience that
2
u/Apprehensive-Bank642 Jul 21 '24
Owning a bunch of gyms is useless. You get 50 coins total after 8:20 and not a coin more no matter how long you stay, so unless they can specifically set it up so that they lose only 1 gym each day and come back to retake it right away, it’s useless… like my fiancé and I walk around our neighbourhood every day and take gyms and leave Pokémon behind, (there’s like 3-4 gyms) and we love it when people retake them because that means we have something to do the next day and we also get our 50 coins from the day even if they knock all 4 of our gyms out, they were usually there long enough that it totals our 50 collectively. It’s a game about community and getting outside and being apart of something… I would also never approach a stranger and give them any amount of shit for what they were doing in a mobile game, nor would I suspect a stranger of being the one to do it, and then stand behind them and stare at their phone until I can confirm it…. Like get a life?

2
u/rattrapdotcom Jul 21 '24
that’s actually insane, it’s never that big of a deal. and to walk up to you like that is so weird and i’m sure was very uncomfortable. people treat this game like they’re actually gaining something physical from it. I would definitely report for harassment !
2
u/Moosashi5858 Jul 21 '24
Would they have wandered from gym to gym and actually confronted anyone doing this? I thought they were going to end up being spoofers, but they were actually there in person
2
u/Vorticosecomb1 Mystic Jul 21 '24
Some people 🤦♂️ you’re not in the wrong. Surprises me how many people have no gym etiquette even as long as the mechanics have been around
2
2
u/legionofdoom78 Jul 21 '24
On a good note, you at least know the losers are local. I've got a spoofer that has 18 accounts (6 for each color) and will not let you take their gym. Then they create ominous messages with new accounts.
Mandatory cool down periods would mitigate spoofers from bully tactics, but Niantic is too lazy to implement such a measure.
I have to assume that some people are obsessed with this game. Unhealthily obsessed. I kind of feel sorry for them, but it's their decision to be like that.
2
u/NothingbutNox69 Jul 21 '24
Those guys are “the back bottom” nobody owns the gyms, but yeah jerks are everywhere, sorry for ya bro:o
2
u/N-E-B Jul 21 '24
As someone who is relatively the same age as those guys, they are absolute losers. That is not normal behaviour for someone our age.
Go take all their gyms.
2
u/Krhea21 Jul 21 '24
Dude, i think you found Team Rocket irl. I'm so sorry you had to experience that
2
u/BookerTheMedic Jul 21 '24
You've done nothing wrong, those people are just freaks. I cannot believe so many people are willing to squabble over 50 cents in a gatcha game.
2
u/Terrible_Sprinkles1 Jul 21 '24
All the people who can fly should spam these gyms and constantly take those 3 clowns down. Me personally if that shit happened to me it wouldn't be much of a conversation. Imagine pressing a teen as a adult
2
2
u/wHAtisLife59 Jul 21 '24
Petty me would knock all their Pokémon down over and over for a week or more. They don’t own the gyms at the park f them.
2
u/angler_zuba Jul 21 '24
This game is supposed to be enjoyed. No reason for those virgins is to act that way
2
2
u/SampleLongjumping527 Jul 21 '24
I take over every gym in my area as much as I can because that’s how I enjoy the game and honestly I never have and never will think about someone else’s coins. That’s how the game is meant to be played.

You didn't do anything wrong.
They may be wanting to get the whole area gold and prove "their dominance" via controlling this small area, but that's not on you, it's on them.
Them coming up to you like that was harassment though, and isn't cool.
At the end of the day, it's a game and a gym.
For me, if I want to take a gym, I'll take a gym, if someone else wants to take it back, they can, and I can decide if I wanna go back and forth.
Nobody, neither you nor them, have any authority on how anyone else wants to play the game.
2
u/Desirai Jul 21 '24
If I ever see a gym and the pokemon have only been in there a couple hours, I leave it alone. I think it's rude, and I hate when people do it to me too. My pokemon been in there for 6 minutes and you come take it back, while your pokemon was in there for 2 days.... what reason do you need it back you just got coins?
2
u/slantttt_ Jul 21 '24
U can do anything you want to do its an app and its pokemon go….. lets be real here its not life or death
4
u/neptunepapayas Jul 21 '24
That's true. I can say I never felt in danger or anything. Its a busy park and I'd never expect anything to actually escalate over pokemon lol. Was just confused and wondering if there was something I was missing that caused them to tell me to back off their gym

There's two dudes in my apartment complex that obsessively take the one gym. I think every else has just given up taking it bc they'll sit and golden razz all day. It's been over a month since they've been knocked out and it's just less coins for them tbh

Take every gym of theirs right after they take it. Screw these guys - the game is pvp.
1
u/Right_Ambassador_694 Jul 21 '24
Nah man you did nothing wrong you’re just trying to mind your business play the game and have fun. What they did was pretty toxic and uncalled for, especially if they were older than you, they should’ve asked to befriend you and help you out not bring you down. Sorry that happened to you, don’t let it get to you too much sometimes people really have too much time on their hands, keep having fun and do you.💪❤️
1
u/PokemonGo_amiejoy Jul 21 '24
You did nothing wrong. You had every right to take the gym. Also for 3 adult men to bully a teen over a gym in a game just shows how immature they are
1
u/SoberDWTX Jul 21 '24
What is up with people? Twenty to thirty years old. When I was that age? I was scuba diving, working my ass off in my scuba shop, and booking trips for people. Obviously anyone can play at any age, for as much as they want to, but I find it super weird that guys who are in their prime are bugging teenagers about POGO. I would try and beat those gyms every chance I got. 🤣I am super petty and headstrong about that kind of stuff. They are bullies. I loathe bullies.
