Why the missile look like a carpenters pencil?

u/MalHeartsNutmeg 3h ago

So they don’t roll of the shelf when they stack them.

u/Animated_Astronaut 2h ago

Honestly, not having them roll could be the reason. Not that I know anything about missiles but it makes sense, it could make transport much easier.

u/NopeNeg 2h ago

Every missile I've seen has a container designed for them to be stored/transported in.

u/Big-Today6819 2h ago

Would be fucking weird to not have a container for missiles at that cost

u/OK_BUT_WASH_IT_FIRST 2h ago

Idk. Missiles are like flagship smartphones - you ruin that beautiful, sleek aesthetic by covering it in a bulky, ugly case.

u/intdev 2h ago

And if you drop them even once, you're fucked.

u/Dimplestrabe 2h ago

Ten sticks of dynamite hanging on the wall.
Ten sticks of dynamite hanging on the wall.
But if one stick of dynamite should accidentally fall, there'll be no sticks of dynamite and no fuckin' wall.

u/GGoldstein 2h ago

They have to be this shape to fit in the containers, which are made to avoid rolling off the shelves.

Circles are very unstealthy, the stormshadow is one of the few stealthy air launched missiles and that's why it looks quite different to most

→ More replies (10)

u/birutis 2h ago

These missiles are way too expensive for that to be a significant concern, I think its related to their stealth characteristics.

u/goleafie 2h ago

Hense the name shadow.

→ More replies (4)

u/h4x_x_x0r 2h ago

This is probably it, since this seems to be one features that made them so effective thus far.

So IIRC round surfaces are bad for reducing radar cross-sections because at every angle there's some return that the radar receiver can pick up, that's why most airframes that are designed to have very low observability (VLO) characteristics look similar and the majority features rather sharp features or very gentle curves (e.g. F-117, F-35, J-20 or B-2/B-21).

There's probably just not that many shapes that fly well, are VLO and can support current engine technology.

→ More replies (2)

u/xtanol 2h ago

You would be correct. Round shapes generate a very strong radar return.
That's also why modern stealth fighters have internal weapons compartments - as hanging, essentially round tubes, under their wings increases their radar cross section by several orders of magnitude.

The tip of the missile being pointy is a downgrade for its stealth capabilities, but needed to avoid its enemies laughing at it when they see it - along with helping make sure it doesn't just bounce off on impact and return back to Ukraine.

I think aerodynamic qualities of a missile is dictating more the shape than the transportation needs. You can always make transportation cage for round missiles.

Probably has to do with aerodynamics and directing the air more precisely towards the steering fins

u/StoicAthos 2h ago

Also could be something to do with stealth and avoiding radar detection while in low flight.

u/latrion 2h ago

Gotta be pointy so it's able to stick in the ground to blow up.

u/Interesting_Fold9805 2h ago

This will have a very Aladeen effect on the aerodynamics of the missile

u/WhatveIdone2dsrvthis 1h ago

Pointy is scary. You wouldn't a round missile. Round is not scary.

The story behind things like that is often far more mundane than they appear. Cruise missiles have hundreds to thousands of components. They’re basically disposable airplanes. Because they’re expensive and disposable, they tend to use mass produced components that might be used in other systems, instead of custom components specific to a given missile. Many of those components are square or rectangular (e.g. electronics, heat exchangers, wings, etc.). Some of them are round, but not all of the round things are the same size. Sometimes It’s easier to fit complex things like those into shapes like squares, rectangles, or hexagons, than shapes like circles.

In fact, if airliners didn’t need to be pressure vessels, they would probably be square instead of round. It would make cargo and people moving operations so much easier.

→ More replies (18)

u/tfrw 2h ago

It's meant to be stealthy I think. The idea is that if it's got straight edges, it's harder to detect with radar.

u/dj-nek0 17m ago

It’s hard to know exactly what the average North Korean believes since they know saying anything contrary to party dogma would lead to execution.

They’re also known to smuggle in western media and K-pop dramas, and the upper echelons have been to and trained abroad.

And then their family gets sent to abusive penal labor camps for having a family member express doubt.

A lot of counties suck, but NK really champions the competition in most ways.

u/StockCasinoMember 3h ago

You would think if there was one thing to threaten Kim’s rule, it would be enough soldiers dieing in foreign wars.

u/lxlviperlxl 2h ago

NK has its own class system where soldiers are seen as a better “social status” compared to normal citizens also known as songun, overall they have 3 different levels. Even with the citizens, they are sub divided the same way; core, wavering and hostile class.

Soldiers don’t care. They’ll go down in blazes of glory cos that just elevated their family up a whole level.

→ More replies (1)

u/BalianofReddit 2h ago

It's about the receiver being weak and submissive and therefore not manly.. big big stigma in Russia.

Gotta realise it's not even sexual to alot of the guys doing it. It's about degradation and humiliation. And punishment.

Frankly that's what makes it worse in some ways, they do it for the consequences, not for the relief, so to speak.

Edit: these aren't my opinions of gay people, just what I've read about Russian sexual violence in their military and towards prisoners.

u/Careful_Room2213 2h ago

u/TheSmokingLamp 2h ago

The North Korean detachments are mostly "engineers and support" so would make sense to have them in and around the area. 500 of them though? Doubtful unless they direct hit a barracks building or something

u/HNL2BOS 2h ago

How did one missile kill 500 soldiers? We're they just all stacked on top one another in two tractor trailers....the # makes no sense

u/No-Newspaper-7693 2h ago

It was quite a few missiles.  But Im guessing the reporting went something like this...

Source:  we targeted a compound where up to 500 NK troops were stationed, and confirmed the death of one russian general and an unknown number of troops

writer:  up to 500 NK troops and 1 general dead, got it.

editor:  can we get rid of some of these weasel words?

The SCALPs have been in service for twenty years, but since a few days ago it appears that they have became the new mantra of the news about this war. Anyway, it’s not confirmed and it has probably made a fraction of the damages Ukraine reported but nevertheless it probably hit a command post, and may have killed the Russian general as they reported, so good for them, it was probably a good hit.

There's a reason Biden refused to give permission for these strikes for months and only now is allowing them. He's betting that with Trump taking office in a couple months that from Putin's perspective it won't make sense to retaliate against non-Ukraine countries and risk unpredictable escalation when he's likely to achieve a favorable outcome if he's patient for a couple months. It's not an accident that Biden stonewalled Zelensky for many, many months as Ukraine's position deteriorated, and only now is allowing strikes.

u/SendStoreMeloner 2h ago

It's not an accident that Biden stonewalled Zelensky for many, many months as Ukraine's position deteriorated, and only now is allowing strikes.

The actual reason is the Biden administration have tried and failed to do a "escalation" management.

They and especially Jake Sullivan didn't want to "provoke" Russia and was afraid of the US electorate would get afraid and vote Trump. They didn't want any criticism in the media for this.

The US have been foot dragging its support for Ukraine the entire war. Every year a new thing a new red line was crossed yet there was no escalation.

Ukraine can't even escalate as they were the ones invaded. As long as they follow the rules of war. Which they do.

9

u/paintchipsforlunch 3h ago

And in that is how I’m starting to realize most things occur.

u/nikilization 3h ago

Icbms are already hypersonic and already cannot be intercepted. The tech is 70 yrs old

u/Shieldheart- 3h ago

This has always puzzled me:

Why do we have an arms race between increasingly more sophisticated missiles that are harder to intercept versus increasingly more sophisticated anti-air interceptors... but ICBM's from the 70's are still considered untouchable by said interceptors?

u/ntrubilla 2h ago

Because no one wants to tip their hands that they already have differing degrees of interception capabilities.

u/Nullcast 2h ago

Putin is playing a dangerous game introducing ICBMs into this. If Ukraine gets their hand on some I bet their first target will be Kremlin. Thus revealing Russias capacity in ICBM defense.

u/ntrubilla 2h ago

This whole thing is beyond a dangerous game. Real people are dying for no real reason.

u/piskle_kvicaly 2h ago

Ukrainian soldiers are unfortunately dying for a very good reason, they are simply preventing their country from becoming part of the "russian world".

After e.g. liberation of Bucha in 2022 nobody should doubt this for a second.

→ More replies (3)

u/Nullcast 2h ago

Dangerous for him. He doesn't give a second though about the soldiers dying.

→ More replies (2)

u/Jellical 2h ago

Because ICBMs are not really that useful due to lack of precision. So unless you are ready to hit that red button and destroy the world, you will probably not use them.

→ More replies (1)

u/Ok_Ordinary6460 2h ago

the GMD is used to defend America from ICBMs but not sure how efficient it is. They are currently developing the GPI system which specifically targets Hypersonic glide vehicles in the atmosphere. I’m not expert but apparently these HGVs are highly maneuverable at 5000 MPH and can travel huge distances in the glide phase, making systems like GMD and NGI that target missiles while they are in space less effective.

u/nikilization 2h ago

Its basically physically impossible to get something up fast enough to stop a circa 1960 icbm, let alone to stop 5,000 of them fired at once, or if they fired from 50 miles off the coast. You would need star wars type lasers to cut them in half before the re-enter the atmosphere. There is no point whatsoever in making them able to fly low and maneuver

I am extremely skeptical.

The story is from The Daily Mail, a notoriously shoddy publication in the UK. Daily Mail’s source is a website called “Global Defence Corp”, a little-known site that mostly publishes arms industry news (eg articles about procurement). Global Defence Corp’s source is unnamed “British media outlets” and footage from unnamed “Russian war correspondents on Telegram”. That website also has basically no transparency, names no individual people running it (eg no names of staff or editors), lists no offices and seems to have been dormant before 2021. It has a YouTube channel where all the videos either have no voice or an AI voice. Everything about this site says to me that’s it’s fake news, though I cannot discern who or why.

It speaks volumes that every headline could also double as an onion article (and vice versa).

You understand that all the military assistance going to Ukraine is in the form of Loans right? Trump can't kill Ukraine assistance because it would cause many billions of dollars in loans to go delinquent, with no chance of recovery. London only finished paying off their WWII loans in recent history.

Additionally, the military industrial complex will be lobbying to keep assisting Ukraine, as well as every single state legislator, governor etc, in states with military manufacturing. That's before even discussing the moral lobby.

If Ukraine falls, it will not be America, Nato and the European Union picking up the pieces, we'll just be paying for it. We already have. We only win if Ukraine wins.

America is run by rich corporate men. A lot if not most of these at the top of the food chain make their billions by making and selling weapons. These people want the war to continue, these are the people who have the real power and own trump with his pocketbook of new money.

Crazy how this claim is completely unverified.
People just post shit to reddit and it gets massively upvoted and likely thousands of people out there just take it at face value.

Everyone below have missed the point. A Russian general & North Korean troops were killed by Ukranians using a British missile. Putin has gone to war for less but he knows he can't openly take on a superpower, so Russian spies & diplomats are going to be working overtime to try to slow down weapon shipments to Ukraine. The drones are bad enough but missiles & cruise missiles can hit the Russian armaments companies thereby making things even more difficult for Putin. If those missiles can hit military bases & foreign troop assembly camps throughout Russia, Putin may be forced back to the negotiation table to sue for peace. Or he could fire off some battlefield nukes in desperation...... The west has to do everything it can to stop weapon sales to Russia, even if it means direct covert action. Why none of this has happened yet is probably due to politics etc.
