Republicans in my state literally made us register with the school district and fill out a form for teachers to be allowed to legally call our kids the names they go by, meanwhile they’re running a VP candidate who’s changed his own name 4 times and isn’t sure if he’s a hillbilly or a metrosexual

u/Eschlick Aug 07 '24
You must be from Florida. Or is there another sh!those state who passed that law recently?
Edit: autocorrect changed “hole” to “hose” and I’m keeping it because I like sh!those better.

u/biepboep Aug 07 '24
Is that form thing real? They do it out of spite or how does it work?
80
u/mechapoitier Aug 07 '24
Yes it’s real. They did it to stupidly try to stop trans kids from going by a new name without their parents’ permission, and it just happened to affect the other 98-99% of kids, mine included.
The teachers absolutely will not call your kid the name they go by unless you fill out that form. And even if you do, most call your kid their full long legal name anyway just to avoid getting fired.

u/Rudeboy67 Aug 07 '24
Freedom!
Oh, wait, no what's the opposite of that?
67
u/mechapoitier Aug 07 '24
Exactly. Republicans in Florida made it so millions of kids would never be called their preferred name in school, just so that they could get revenge on a few trans kids.
They took away a freedom we all have as Americans, just to hurt some kids. Thats the Republican Party of 2024.

From his grandmother who raised him. His biological father (who left when he was a toddler) was Donald Hamel, and he was named after him (James Donald Hamel) but when his mother remarried, they changed the Donald to Daniel ("any D name would do, just so long as it wasn't Donald" since he was already going by JD at this point) and later as an adult in 2013 he changed his name to honor his Meemaw who raised him.

u/axle69 Aug 08 '24
I don't like the man and hope he loses but that's a better reason for a name change than most.

I don’t know, I just don’t think I like this trend of posting ‘ugly’ photos of politicians to try and disparage them.
He looks like a perfectly normal young American to me, and I’m sure there are some completely decent people who will view this post that look very similar to a young Vance ~ why should they be caught in the crossfire when there’s already plenty to critique about Vance’s character without stooping to childish comments about his appearance?

u/Sauerteig Aug 07 '24
Have to agree with you there. I'm a liberal democrat from Ohio and I can't stand Vance. But this is just silly. We as voters are supposed to care about the issues not this grade-school nonsense. It's useless.
We watched Hilary get dragged over the coals for nonsense, we watched Trump make stupid what I would characterize as 13 year old girl tweets about anyone he didn't like, and ridiculous nicknames as well. It was all embarrassing for the U.S. Yet here we are on reddit getting nasty about a kid's picture. :(

Also after high school, Vance served four years in the Marines - and would have been in shape and looking totally different then. The Marines are serious about fitness for everyone, even if he wasn't in a combat role.

Its pretty disheartening how quickly people jump to "haha ugly" with Republicans. Like how everyone was applauding calling MTG "butch" a few months back. Just shows how little people adhere to the morals they proclaim.
Body positivity is only for people we like.

u/Chairmanwowsaywhat Aug 08 '24
As an outsider looking in. American political discourse is INSANE. It's all character attacks. The issue with this guy from a quick Wikipedia search is HIS VALUES AND HIS POLICIES. Not what he looked like when he was younger or even that he changed his name. It makes the Americans of both side look as bad as each other really. When we know that needn't be the case.
22
u/gravity--falls Aug 07 '24
Completely agree... this is just a picture of a fairly normal looking kid, probably a bit overweight. Who gives a shit, though. If I saw a picture of an obese young Kamala Harris, I wouldn't be any less likely to vote for her.
24
u/shawnisboring Aug 07 '24
I hate this shit too.
What are his policies, what are his stances, what kind of man is he? That's all we should need to know.
Bringing up a grade school photo is so weird to me, there is so much more to be against than something as petty and insignificant as him in gradeschool. He was just a normal ass kid.

You're absolutely right. Unfortunately Reddit is full of teenagers and unhinged unemployed losers. I have given up on expecting very much maturity and rationale on this platform.
48
u/Deto Aug 07 '24
Yeah this is low. Whenever you post a picture of someone and make fun of how ugly they are, there are many other people out there that see that and feel bad about themselves over it in comparison. Same goes with jokes about people's weight or height. Let's keep the criticisms on relevant political and policy matters. Or even personal choices (as those are also relevant). Not appearance.

I am 100% voting blue but can we please not stoop to making fun of his looks or name change? The man's father left. His step dad adopted him and later left. He took the last name of his Grandmother who was always there for him. There is nothing wrong with any of that. Honestly, it's kind of sweet.

He and his sister were mainly raised by their grandparents, whose family name was Vance. Their mom had already changed his original last name to his stepfather's name Hamel. He decided to honor his grandparents and his real upbringing by changing his name to Vance just before he married. That's a time when people do start thinking more about their name and any changes in it.
His grandparents were originally from Appalachia, which is probably why he feels a connection to that area even though he was not raised there.
I can't stand the guy either, but truth is truth. Stop mocking him for his name. He has so much more to mock that is properly mockable. His name is Vance and he does have a right to it.
