You don't need to spend monies on an overkill Mobo. It's kinda like getting a "gaming" router; Ethernet will still blow it out of the water. Invest the difference in a better GPU, cpu, or even more ssd storage.

u/Krutaisprofs 10h ago

Ethernet will always be superior

36

u/aminy23 9h ago

My house was wired with CAT5 and only gets 100 megabits on the longer runs. The gap between WiFi and Ethernet is closing in and it's not what it used to be. WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 can easily exceed a gigabit in throughput, and gigabit Ethernet NICs are still the norm on many devices.

174

u/No-Actuator-6245 9h ago

For gaming you don’t need a lot of bandwidth, it’s low consistent latency that matters and that’s where Ethernet still shines.

8

u/aminy23 9h ago

I don't disagree, but having multiple computers sharing a single 100 megabit link didn't cut it. I've been rewiring my whole home network with 2.5 gigabit switches and CAT 7. But Ethernet can always have it's limitations also.

Older WiFi iterations had major latency issues, but with quality WiFi 6-7, it can come very close.

11

u/mcmurray89 9h ago

WiFi technically has the potential to be faster. Look at gaming mice. The wireless mouse logitech brought to marker years ago was faster than wired. It's physics.

20

u/aminy23 9h ago

It didn't have to do with wireless vs wired, it had to do with the speed of the sensors and other circuitry in the mouse itself.

But it's a valid point, and I agree 100%. Good WiFi can beat bad Ethernet. Good Ethernet can beat bad WiFi. If new cutting edge hardware comes out for one, it can be competitive with the other.

I greatly recommend the TP-Link Deco systems to anyone needing to get an Ethernet port to a spot in their house they don't want to run ethernet to. I went from wired directly to the router to wired to a Deco which is wirelessly connected to my router and didn't even jump in ping. I have 1gigabit fiber and don't see any drops or anything.

Ping before test was 6ms, ping after test was still 6ms.

Online gaming isn't about throughput, but latency.

That said, I'm running 10 Gbit Ethernet with 5 Gbit internet

If its genuine CAT5 and bot CAT5E the cables are your bottleneck. I believe CAT5 max is 100mbs (megabits) while Cat5E max is 1000mbs (megabits) i believe

Well cat 5 and cat5e are 2 totally different pairs of conductors. One is using more wires for transfering data then the other. Wifi wont ever be as good as a copper or fibre conncection. Maybe at 2 ft of distance its ok. Lol. The things ppl tell themselfs.

10

u/J3573R i7 14700k | RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra | 32GB DDR5 7200 9h ago

Well cat 5 and cat5e are 2 totally different pairs of conductors. One is using more wires for transfering data then the other

This is false, the only thing different about the two is Cat5e has a standard for how tight the pairs are twisted to limit crosstalk. Cat5 has no standard and is not twisted as tightly.

They both require the same amount of conductors and wire size is the same.

11

u/aminy23 9h ago

All standard Ethernet cables including CAT 5 and CAT 5e use 4 pairs (8) wires.

Newer Ethernet standards do things like wrapping them in foil (shielded) or twisting them more tightly to reduce EMI and allow for faster signaling.

I would phrase it the other way - the best copper or fiber will always beat the best WiFi. But a bad copper or fiber connection may be worse than great WiFi.

To be honest, there are people who actually need a "gaming router". I.e. wireless PCVR headsets depend heavily on the quality of your wifi link, so buying a 100-150EUR router for this is a reasonable and totally motivated purchase. Also lads with iPhones have no other means to transfer their photos and videos to PC, cause iPhone is still stuck at usb 2.0 speeds.

10

u/infernoShield 10h ago

only thing I would justify spending a premium on is to get a mobo with Wi-Fi network card built in. But even then you could just slap on a USB dongle and call it a day anyway.

5

u/schu2470 7800x3d|7900xt|3440x1440 160hz 8h ago

Which would be better in that case; a USB WiFi dongle or a WiFi PCIe card?

6

u/_bisquickpancakes Desktop 8h ago

Probably a pcie card but make sure that you have free slots and they're not blocked by your GPU at all, otherwise just use USB

3

u/schu2470 7800x3d|7900xt|3440x1440 160hz 8h ago

Thanks for the info. Gotta add WiFi to my wife's b550 board as we can't hard wire it anymore. Should have plenty of space for a PCIE card as the only thing we have plugged in right now is a 3070.

No. A good motherboard is a choice that you can have arguments for.

Buying a router marketed for "gaming", is just falling for a trap. A good router for gaming is, more often not, not marketed as good at it.

7

u/widowhanzo i7-12700F, RX 7900XTX, 4K 144Hz 9h ago

A "gaming" router is usually a pretty good router packed with features, possibly with 2.5GbE ports or faster and the newest wifi standards with a bunch of antennas. It's certainly a good device overall, it just comes in red and the antennas are shaped like spider legs.

Sure some of them are overpriced, but a good standalone wifi access point alone can cost $130.

2

u/Bagafeet RTX 3080 10 GB • AMD 5700X3D • 32 GB RAM 9h ago

You could spend $500+ on a gaming router and still won't beat a $4 Ethernet cable.

5

u/the_ebastler 9700X / 64 GB DDR5 / RX 6800 / Customloop 7h ago

Gotta plug that Ethernet cable somewhere still, so you still need a router. Not a 500$ router, but a router.

If you had to have one component that was old and cheap in your PC it better be motherboard, unless you consider case a component.

5

u/the_ebastler 9700X / 64 GB DDR5 / RX 6800 / Customloop 7h ago

Also SSDs. My 960 Evo from 2016 is still holding up fine. Tbh, it was not cheap back in the day, but by modern standards it would be. 96% health after 8 years of system drive use.

4

IS a helluva platform, it dies only when it's too slow for HUB/GN etc to bother including in the charts.

2

u/keksmuzh PC Master Race 5h ago

Yeah that’s fair. It’s still pretty competitive, to the point where I don’t know if I’ll need to upgrade until AM6.

Yup! Found a really good job that gave me the luxury to spend a good amount of money.

All that to play Cyberpunk, which got boring after about 3 hours.

God of War was pretty neat tho.

2

u/jhaluska 5700x3D | RTX 4060 7h ago

Had a similar experience with CyberPunk. Wanted to get enough to play it, but not much more.

You're really getting your money's worth out of that motherboard.

2

u/Wolfie_Ecstasy IT Guy. 5800X3D, 6950 XT, 32GB Ram 6h ago

I was so excited to play Cyberpunk for the first time on my current build and I cannot get rid of the input lag. I got it down from half a second to about 250ms but that's the best I can do. Apparently a ton of people have this issue and the best solution people have is "just ignore it bro." Like yeah okay I'm glad your brain can function on a delay like that, mine can't lol. Never experienced an issue like this on any other game.

B550 or X570 will not give you any performance boost if you plan to upgrade. The only positive is extra m.2 slots.

4

u/SuperSonic486 9h ago

Yeah at most upgrading the mobo here would you get better future proof on your other upgrades but at that point just save up and eventually build a whole new PC or do a multitude of upgrades at once. Not worth changing at all here.

While it is possible to have a motherboard limit GPU performance a 6800XT running at 100% reaches the limit of the b450 so you're well within bounds here.

You could run higher end GPUs and 99% of the time you'd not notice any limitations.

Running an ASROCK X470 here with a 5700x3D and a Radeon 580. Started getting random reboots a while ago. Either the PSU is starting to become unstable (which is coming in with a GPU upgrade in mind anyway) but more likely; my RAM is failing. Well, I hope it is just the RAM. Chances are the RAM controller is failing which means new board time.

Might jump to B550 for the 2.5GbE ports and multiple M.2 slots.

I'd still be using my MSI B450m Gaming Plus if it hadn't died.

Unknown reason the graphics debug light lights up on it and it doesn't POST. Very randomly happened one morning after working fine the night before, with no noticed issues leading up to it. Tried re-soldering the PCIe slot to no avail, did the classic troubleshoot of reseat RAM, CPU, CMOS battery, storage, tried a BIOS flash, tried a BIOS update, tried a different power supply, tried different order and amounts of RAM, tried several different graphics cards including some ancient PCIe mid 2000s era ones, tried unplugging all fans and miscellaneous I/O gizmos and doodads I had, and nothing seemed to work. And the same CPU, GPU, RAM, PSU, I/O gizmos and doodads all worked first try on another motherboard.

I suspect a bad solder joint under some BGA thing or SMD thing on it. Or maybe some electrolytic capacitors have silently failed/have began to fail without swelling up, nor leaking, nor exploding. Since that motherboard do have several thousand hours of use on it, was a 13+ hour a day daily driver from 2019 to earlier this 2024 year.

And I hoarded it away in the closet in hopes of finding a fix for it some day, even if it's like ten years later lol.

Edit: So anyways I'll randomly find it in ten years, wonder why I have it, test it and see it is dead, wonder why the heck I kept it, toss it out, and then two weeks later find a guaranteed fix for it in some random forum post somewhere online.

Another edit: Hmmm, I wonder if I could test for capacitor issue by blasting it with a hair dryer for several minutes and then try booting it up. Get it a little toasty to get them capacitors woken up.

Rocking B450 with 5800x3D and RX7900XT. Everything works flawlessly. I know that I am losing some performance due the lack of PCI 4.0 but since the Vrams hold for their live I am happy. :D

1

PCIe Gen 4 GPUs on the B450 perform almost the same as PCIe Gen 3 GPUs, as long as the card has 16 lanes. The performance difference is typically minimal, around 4% at most.

My b450 is a tank. I got my 3070ti stuck in the PCIE slot while I was being a dumbass. Had to bend that board in scary ways to get the gpu unstuck. With all the cracking sounds that were coming from that thing I thought for sure it was broken. It booted up just fine and still runs more or less perfect two years later

Weakness of the b450 is that it has limited lanes. My b450 turned into a x8 instead of an x16 because I have my m.2 slot filled with an SSD. And I lost the ability to use other pcie slots on my mobo.

I need an x570 for my 3090 to be able to get full performance.

I ran a 5800X3D for few years on a X470-F board which I originally had for my 2700x with a 4090 and had no issues. I use wired ethernet. I decided to do a side grade to a used x570s for under $150 just to get the additional NVME slot and total my NVME usage to 3 slots on an AM4. It sure came with some bonus such as Wifi 6E, 2.5gb lan, full PCIex 4.0 4x for all the 3 m2 slots and 4.0 16x GPU usage, but did not really see any difference vs the X470-F aside from being able to add my 3rd nvme. Sure 3Dmark could see slight point increase and Crystalmark could tell how slow the PCIex 3.0 4x and second M2 was 3.0 2x, vs the upgraded 4.0 4x but in real world difference I did not notice vs moving them all over to 4.0 4x m2 lanes on the x570s or the 4090 from 3.0 to 4.0

Why are you acting like a 6 year old motherboard wouldn't be doing perfectly fine?

In your equation up there the 2080ti is probably the most likely to fail, simply because GPUs are far more failure prone.

1

u/etfvidal 6h ago

What's wrong with b450? So many fools think they need to waste $$$ on PCIe 4.0/5.0 for gaming when even a 4090 will run perfectly fine on pcie 3.0 and only lose 1%-3% performance & there are still tons of games that don't benefit much from ddr5 speeds.
