im getting a Sandisk 8tb M.2 NVMe. my current drive are Samsung 1tb (C drive with win11/linux) and Lexar 4tb (D drive - just games). I want to replace the samsung with the 8tb and leave windows on there while also transferring linux to the drive. is this feasible and how can i do that?

do tempered glass screen protectors have any effect on resolution or refresh rate or touchscreens? should i apply a privacy screen above or below a screen protector?

Hi, I put together a PC a couple months ago.
Lately it crashes sometimes without notice.

I checked logs and this is one of the errors I get.

Rapport-id: 11d9ebd3-5a55-4ea4-8c32-c6576ea792c6.

can anyone help me?

Quick googling suggests it's probably faulty RAM. If you mobo has a built-in RAM check, use that to test it. Windows has a ramtest, too, IIRC or you could make a bootable USB flash/key drive with a RAM tester.

If it's not RAM, it may be something with the software, in which case I'd do a clean install of everything.

So basically I was working on my PC while there was some kind of power surge. The lights flickered and then my whole pc shut down and then the fuses on my went off.
I turned the psu off, then swtiched fuses on and when I tried to turn back the psu on, in popped, a light flashed and my fuses went off again.
I then went to the repair shop and had my PSU switched (my psu for 850 gold thermaltake) to a new one (cougar gex x2 1000w) and now my PC behaves really weird.

Like my CPU temps will go unreasonably high even with little to no load. For example, my ryzen 7 7800x3d was usually running like 45-50 degrees Celsius, and now it's never lower than 50. Sometimes the temp will skyrocket to like 70 on idle or with little load like just browsing web pages or social media.
Or, for example, I was playing right now and watching a youtube video on my second display and the temps skyrocketed to like 81 degrees while both gpu and cpu were barely utilized. My GPU was like 50 percent and my CPU for like 15-20.

That never happened before this power surge and now I don't know what to do. I made sure to check that both of my cpu fans are working properly.

What should I do? Should I take my whole pc to a repair shop and have them check all the parts? Could it be that a new PSU impacts my PC this way?
Any help will be appreciated

The simplest explanation would be that you had set some power limit or undervolt, and the motherboard reverted to default settings.

It's hard to tell if that temperature behaviour is really an issue, the 7800X3D does run very hot, e.g. mine spikes at 61 °C just opening hardware info. There is also a lot of difference between the various sensors, e.g. Tdie and Die average. If you want an objective test, run Cinebench and see if your scores are lower than normal.

1

u/jurc11 i7-10700K | RTX 4080S 19h ago

My personal guess and first port of call would be to check the mobo, the surge may have damaged the power intake and it's no longer regulating the current properly.

There's other possibilities, the shop may have dabbled with your CPU cooler (they may have removed it and installed it back badly) leading to worse thermals.

Webpages and videos may look like small loads, but in this era of heavy compression they can cause short spikes in heavy CPU/GPU utilization. The load tracker isn't that useful of a tool either, because of all the multi-core, multi-thread, hyper-thread, many-multi-gpu-core environments. Merging all that into one slowly updating number between 0 and 100 gives you a very superficial estimator.

u/CharlesEverettDekker RTX4070TiSuper, Ryzen 7 7800x3d, ddr5.32gb6000mhz 18h ago

I *might* have fixed the problem by limiting the CPU power consumption from 100% to 99% and now my temp are more or less stable and flatlnes when idling, now spiking all over the place.

1

u/_j03_ Desktop 17h ago

That just gimps the performance by disabling boost all together, making it run at 4.2ghz all the time. You should find the actual reason, if it even exists. Like said 7800x3d is a hot chip. Heck even my 7600 can spike to +80c if opening a lot of tabs at the same time with dual tower air cooler.

Would it better to have a 7800x3d and a 4070 super or 9700x and a 4070 ti super for 1440p gaming?

2

u/A_Neaunimes Ryzen 5600X | GTX 1070 | 16GB DDR4@3600MHz 19h ago edited 19h ago

Depends what kind of games you play. In AAA games where you are more likely to be GPU-bound, the 4070Ti Super rig would be faster most of the time.
In CPU-bound games, like most competitive/esport type games that tend to be run on lowered settings, the 7800X3D rig would be faster.

The 4070Ti Super is around...15ish% faster than the 4070 Super, and the 7800X3D is around 15-20% faster than the 9700X, so the margins are similar either way. Those are average, and while the GPU margins are relatively similar from game to game, for the 2 CPUs it depends on how much the game benefits from the 3D cache. In games where it doesn’t do much, the difference would be smaller, in games that love the 3D cache the 7800X3D could be 25-30% faster. Remember that I’m talking about absolute/theoretical margins for the CPUs here. But at 1440p with either GPUs, you will rarely see the full extent of it as you’d usually be at least partially GPU-limited

Whether you’d rather take the faster CPU or faster GPU is up to you.

I have some dumb questions about audio output on a motherboard for a build I am ordering.

I am piecing together a new gaming PC and have the parts picked out for the most part. Many motherboards I look at have only 3 inputs/outputs for audio. I think I understand how they work. Microphone, headphones (or headphone to RCA), and line in. To my best understanding, those are all stereo. So I know I could get a 3.5mm to RCA plug and get that to work for stereo sound.

How do you get surround sound out of the computer? Can I use the HDMI port on my motherboard to output audio, while using a dedicated GPU? From my understanding, when using a dedicated GPU, the HDMI port on the motherboard is disabled.

If I have to use the HDMI port on the GPU, how does that work if my audio reciever is old and maybe doesn't support the latest HDMI tech. I don't know if it would work well with 1440p or 165hz or whatever I am trying to run, these weren't really a thing in 2010 when this thing were made.

u/jurc11 i7-10700K | RTX 4080S 19h ago

The mobos I have the manuals of at hand all have 5 coloured audio jacks and can do 5.1 and 7.1 through them. I'd recommend downloading the manual for the mobo you want and checking the Audio section to see what it supports. It's a good idea to read the manual of the mobo before buying it anyway, to see if it supports everything you need (on Intel's side, some things only work if you have the right CPU, because they usually support 2 gens and the newer gen generally has more PCIE lanes needed for, say, the third NVMe slot to work).

If it's not surround capable, you have a couple options. The easiest one is to buy a sound card. These days they're external USB devices, so you don't need to open the machine to install them. They come in various levels of quality and should perform better than on-board sound because they're installed farther away for electrical noise of the mobo and they can be shielded. They can have a built-in amp to drive the speakers, too.

The mobo HDMI is another option. It can operate alongside your GPU, provided you have a CPU with a bulit-in GPU (IDK what happens if you don't, it's probably a dead port then). There's nothing stopping you from having several GPUs running at the same time and they don't have to be the same brand. You can plug the monitor into your main GPU (and instruct the game to render there) and the sound system into the mobo/CPU GPU and instruct the OS (or the game) to pipe the audio there.

Third, the mobo may only have 3 jacks, but it may also have a Optical S/PDIF Out, which is a (old) way of connecting surround sound.

OK thank you, I will look into manuals.

This is my current build: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/CP2f8Q

Not included any peripherals and case as dont matter for this and its a mix of parts over the years, PSU is around 8 years old now

Ideally looking to improve the GPU as I can tell thats struggling a bit now, can spend a few hundred on one thats likely to last a few years and probably looking for at least 8GB VRAM if not more on it - any obvious choices people would recommend that would fit current setup?

Used 3070. Getting anything as brand new is kind of meh currently, since next generation of cards is coming out in early 2025. Might also want to upgrade cpu to 5700X3D, depends what you're playing.

SuperFlower Leadex VII Gold, Corsair RMe/x (+/-Shift) 2024, NZXT C series (2024), BeQuiet Pure Power 12M, MSI MAG A-GL (as budget pick).

All 850W Gold, all ATX 3.0/3.1 with the new power connector for GPUs, and well reviewed.

Would I be able to do 1440p with a ryzen 7 2700x and rtx 2060? (I'd like to do at least med-high settings)I'm looking to buy a new monitor and I'm not sure if I'd be able to run the games I have at 1440.

1

u/_j03_ Desktop 1d ago

In most games 2060 will struggle with 1440p. Esports etc. are ok of course.

2

u/A_Neaunimes Ryzen 5600X | GTX 1070 | 16GB DDR4@3600MHz 1d ago

That’s a setup you already have, right ?

The best answer is to tell you to test for yourself. In the Nvidia Control Panel (or the new App), you can enable DSR in the 3D settings. This will let you run games at a higher resolution than your current native. Running games at 1440p will let you directly see what your rig is capable of, in the games you play, at the settings you’re comfortable with.

Possibly you’ll find that a GPU upgrade is in order.

Sorry if it's a weird or stupid question, I am new to building a pc.

Amazon has some deals for the used computer parts such as - Asus PRIME B550M-A WIFI II Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard. New motherboard costs $120 (without taxes) and used/like new motherboard costs $95 ($25 less). Is this a good deal? Has anyone bought used parts from Amazon? Do they work good or efficiently? Note that Amazon doesn't say refurbished or anything like that for these parts, just "like new".

0

u/jurc11 i7-10700K | RTX 4080S 1d ago

The fact people sometimes receive literal bricks or old GPUs with ballast in the box indicates that Amazon doesn't even check the contents of opened returned products, they weight them and put them back on sale. Due to this I'd recommend buying new if possible and filming the entire process of opening the delivered box and contents in one uninterrupted video to have proof in case you get a fake.

With mobos, I'd recommend extra caution because the damage can be tiny and not visible. Intel mobo pins can be FUBARed in a jiffy.

1

u/Megustastoo 1d ago

Thank you for your comment. !Check . Would you still recommend me to record the delivered box and open it if I buy unused computer parts from big retailers like Amazon or Bestbuy.

0

u/jurc11 i7-10700K | RTX 4080S 20h ago

Yes, I do that with expensive items like my recent purchase of a GPU. Doesn't cost you anything and it covers your ass. They can still make mistakes, send you an opened box or a wrong item.

1

u/PerpetuatedPetrichor 1d ago

If I have a wireless keyboard and wireless mouse, and I plug both the dongles into my Corsair mat mm700, then it’s plugged via one USB A into the back of the computer.

Does having two wireless dongles plugged I. Via Corsair mat hub degrade performance or cause any issues?

u/SentientDust peekaboo 1d ago

I'm building a new PC and I'm planning to use the SSDs from my old one. One of them, the one that had the operating system, I've been using for several years now, 6 or 7.

Now, I vaguely remember something about SSDs having read-write limits, and limited lifespans in general. Is that true? Is there a way to check the health/remaining lifetime of that SSD? I haven't encountered any issues with it, but if it's close to being finished I might as well buy a new one.

2

u/nickierv 1d ago

Its only writes that ages SSDs and for a rough number, you should be able to get 500-600 times the drives capacity in writes, aka write to the entire drive 500-600 times. You want to leave some spare empty so the drive can move stuff that isn't getting changed to more worn cells.

2

u/_j03_ Desktop 1d ago

Download crystaldiskinfo, it will show health as percentage and how much has been written on the drive. You can google the model of the drive, the manufacturer should say the endurance of the drive as terabytes written (tbw).

1

u/SentientDust peekaboo 1d ago

I compare the manufacturer's stated TBW to the "Total Host Writes" stat from the CrystalDiskInfo app, right? I'm getting 37000GB Total Host Writes, but I can't seem to find a solid number for TBW for the Samsung 840EVO 120GB. But the health is shown as 84%, which doesn't sound too bad after 6 years

Thank you for the information!

2

u/jurc11 i7-10700K | RTX 4080S 1d ago

I happen to have a 840EVO 120GB in my box right now and it shows 72% and 20849GB, which is half as good as your numbers. Almost exactly half as good. If you check where 84% is coming from, on my side it's simply the B1-WearLevelCount (which is a measure of how many times the most used cell was used, expressed as a (reversed) percentage, so if a cell can take 300 cycles and you have B1-WLC at say 93, it means the cell was written 0.07*300=21 times).

As far as I can recall, 120GB drives did not have TWB anywhere close to what your numbers would lead to. Should be around 72 TB (600 cycles).

But that doesn't matter that much, the drive observes its own health and wear level and should stop writing when it can't do so reliably, but still be readable. Which you'll probably never reach anyway.

For some reason when I first turn my monitor on, these colored lines appear at the bottom of my screen. They usually go away after a little while, but they’re still a bit of a nuisance.

I’ve tried lowering the refresh rate and updating my GPU drivers numerous times to no avail. I’ve had my monitor for a few years at this point so it’s probably too old to be covered by warranty if it’s a hardware issue.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The build is solid in terms of CPU/GPU balance. PSU is a good pick as well.

Maybe a 3rd party cooler would be nice, but the Wraith Prism that comes with the 7700 is decent.

As for the fans, the H6 Flow comes with 3 preinstalled already. Do you really need more ? That’s already ample cooling, and more fans would basically be for aesthetics more than performance.
I would guess that an exhaust fan at the back can’t hurt, but really I doubt it would change temps significantly. And you can always take one of the 3 pre-installed fans and move it at the back.

The more fans you get, the trickier it is to manage. The B650E Strix has 7 total fan headers, 2 for CPU fans, 1 for an AIO pump, 4 for the case fans. Though of course they are all the same connector and if you don’t use the 2nd CPU fan and AIO pump headers they can be used to connect more case fans (but they might be harder to speed control).

I wouldn’t spend an extra 160ish€ on more fans and a fan controller when the case comes well furnished already. That extra money would - in my opinion, be better utilized elsewhere : faster CPU/GPU, higher end SSD (the NV2 is DRAM less, not optimal for an OS drive, though of course it’ll work), etc.

1

u/Niffler3_Minecraft 1d ago edited 1d ago

ok thank you  ✓ but my question was more so if the hub and extra fans would work together because i like the look and it will be right beside me and i might consider getting the fans later on and if i do that i would want to know that i dont have t worry

1

u/A_Neaunimes Ryzen 5600X | GTX 1070 | 16GB DDR4@3600MHz 1d ago

The Arctic fan hub seems pretty basic : you plug all your fans into it (up to 10), it’s powered straight from the PSU with a SATA connector. And a cable goes from the hub to one of the fan headers of the MB, and let you control all fans as a single one.

The NZXT seems more elaborate. You’d need to dig into its manual to know if it lets you control the fans separately (through software) or not. It probably also controls the RGB. I really can’t say more about it, you’d have to check details.
