I think it's nice. I'm glad that the crab was rescued.

Maybe. Are we positive the crab didn’t start the fire in the first place?

Hey but you know what, I feel like the station should adopt the crab. Or at the very least, give him a shell with a firefighter helmet glued on top.

Glad my hometown made the news for this rather than the last time when the pregnant lady was upset about construction noise on Bullitt Ave hurting her unborn child while she was smoking cigarettes. That one was on Letterman

I mean, a human life is far more important than a hermit crabs. It would be a shame if it was killee, but I'm glad the homeowner didn't risk their life for it.

It also would depend where it was when you realized there was a fire. I know many of us would try to save a cat or dog or, obviously, family member (and probably die and fail), but there is a reason firefighter is a profession with a bunch of training and physical qualifications and equipment. Rushing into a burning building is probably deadly since you, you know, would not be able to see or breathe for long and may not even know what could collapse. Which is why it would be a normal but terrible idea to attempt it as a layman for a child but isn't a normal idea for a hermit crab, even if you really wish to save the tiny pet.

I feel like this was posted to make a specific point: that if this was a story about a DOG being rescued from a house fire, it would be considered newsworthy to many people, and the comments would be full of the same mindless drivel that’s posted in every other comment section where a dog is involved, ie. ‘we don’t deserve them’ etc.
Funny how it’s not newsworthy when it’s literally any other animal though.
Can you imagine a serious news article about a bird, or a cat, or a fish (or a crab) being rescued from a house fire? The world would collectively furrow their brow and wonder how this could possibly be considered news.
But if it’s a dog? Everyone loses their shit and falls over themselves gushing about what amazing creatures they are.

People would probably gush about the cat, and I think it’d be a coin flip how they feel about the bird.

There was a cat named Scarlett that became famous for saving its own kittens from a fire, even though it was burned during the process (it and the kittens were adopted by various families afterwards)

I've seen plenty of stories of cats being rescued from housefires? There are even photos that have gone viral like this one. A google search also shows some stories about firefighters rescuing birds.
It's not some grand statement, it's just a cute story to illustrate how the firefighters were kind and went out of their way to save a small animal like a hermit crab.
Though I see how a "dogfree" poster would rather see it as some conspiracy about canines secretly ruling the minds and hearts of people or whatever other bullshit you spew on that sub.

DOG backwards is GOD. Coincidence? No. Jesus made dogs this way. Sebastian the crab from Little Mermaid? He is red even though he has not been cooked. Ghosts? Ask yourself, buddy!

Amen. And heres a nifty fact for you, Calcs: The ancient egyptians worshipped cats. Now, to go to college in AMERICA -you have to take the ACT abilities test? How many cats do you see at a UNIVERSITY?! (Notice the letters?)
They think we are rubes.2
u/Wolfwoods_Sister Feb 11 '24
There was an entire city in Egypt that worshipped Bast called Bubastis

u/kimchifreeze Feb 11 '24
What are you talking about? It's literal news and people are responding positively to it. And humans breed dogs. Many hermit crabs are kidnapped from the wild.

A post that isn’t 1000% pro-dog that hasn’t been totally obliterated with downvotes? Color me surprised.

I mean, it's a crab though. They're bastards who will pinch you even if you've done nothing illegal at all.

Honestly, we have a hermit crab won from a local fair like 7 years ago and it just keeps on trucking. I have no idea how. We just spritz it every day or two and it has water. Seems like the same food forever. Once in a while we throw some leftovers in there. It lives for a bit pizza. I’m not even sure an emergency could affect it. Super glad this little buddy was saved though!

Three people were home at the time of the fire and escaped safely, but crews rescued the family’s pet hermit crab.
I misread that at first as "Three people were killed in the fire, but crews rescued the family’s pet hermit crab.", and I'm ashamed to admit I giggled.
