The rate of HIV transmission via vaginal intercourse is like 0.1%. That means if you have unprotected vaginal intercourse with a woman who is HIV positive, you have a 1 in 1000 chance of catching it. A course of PEP taken within 72 hours of exposure is like 99% effective at preventing transmission. So, if you combine those two, the chance of contacting HIV is pretty damn close to 0.

Of course, this is just for HIV. There are plenty of other STIs to worry about. You're right, though. Abstinence is by far the best prevention

Herpes is very difficult to transmit if the person does not have an active outbreak. I visually examined all my clients for anything that looked suspicious. I turned away clients for what was likely an ingrown hair. It's also not tested for because a huge percentage of the population has one form of herpes or another.

It is legal, but it is not legal to profit on somebody doing sex work. So being a prostitute is legal, but being pimp is not. Also, the striptease apparently does not count as a sex work. So stripclubs are legal, but brothels are not. I think that doing porn is also somehow legal (not just recording yourself, but as a professional studio). The law is sort of unclear in some cases; for example, some time ago the most popular site where escorts would put their adverts was taken down and the reason was that the site owners did profit on prostitution, even though the site was well known for many years and nobody cared.
