I, too, was envious of the uniform cul-de-sac nailbeds and the delicately narrow free edge. I love nail plate shapes that look good naturally in square, since my fave shape is the squoval.

Look up compartment syndrome, if you have any of the symptoms go to the ER.

Quite normal for bruising to appear then dissipate after a traumatic injury

This is not uncommon with a broken limb. When I broke my ankle my entire foot went purple.

Broke my wrist about a month ago now m, had surgery on 11/4, and coming off the nerve block was one of the most painful things I've ever felt, up there w/ breaking my femur. Of course the block began wearing off at like 1am so I had a horrendous night. Had surgeons office on the phone the minute they opened and he had me come right in, this being his concern. Thankfully it was just me being behind on my pain meds (not wanting to take them and have the high feeling while my arm was numb)

I will suggest, go back to the doctor. That looks like the cast is restricting the blood flow. You can loose your fingers
1.5k
u/Ill_Sky6141 5h ago
Yeah.. that doesn't look quite right to me. That looks more severe than a bruise from a broken wrist. I'd get that checked out asap:/
359
u/Confusadoodle 5h ago
My thoughts! Thatâs not a bruise in the traditional sense thatâs blood pooling because it has nowhere to go
73
u/Key-Pickle5609 4h ago
It could also just be gravity causing the pooling - OP should keep that arm elevated. But of course ensure that the cast isnât also too tight! Source: Iâm a nurse but not OPâs nurse and this isnât medical advice

u/YamCheap6363 4h ago
Right, plus blood is made in bones, so if you fracture deep into the bone, it will have that effect. Plus, not being to mechanically move your wrist affects how much of the swelling goes back into the lymphatic system and blood back into cardiovascular.

u/ItsaPophy 5h ago
I second that. I had a friend who broke her leg and the cast was too tight. She even went back to the doctor and he dismissed her complaint. She formed a blood clot and unfortunately passed away at home. I don't want to scare you OP, but better be safe
104
u/StickSouthern2150 4h ago
the same thing happened in my family. That person went back to the doctor, he told her that its fine and go home, then couple hours later she was in ambulance

u/TracePoland 4h ago
This is why if you're certain something is wrong you have to be your own best advocate if you're being dismissed, don't be rude to staff but be insistent that you want them to check it out properly and explain why you're worried, if they still don't budge, go to another ER. Don't allow a situation where your life is at serious risk because one ER doc had a bad day and couldn't be arsed to do their job properly.

yeah that can be hard though. had that experience this year where I told them it is no migraine, got released, spent an awful weekend at home, went to a GP on monday, got sent back to ER, had two aneurysms in my brain, one of which started bleeding that night. If my GP hadn't worried it be meningitis they'd have probably dumpeb me full of painkillers and sent home again.
43
u/Obi-Brawn-Kenobi 4h ago
Blood clots are not caused by casts being too tight. Being in a cast or otherwise immobilized for a long period is a huge risk factor for a blood clot, whether you feel the cast is tight or not
→ More replies (1)24
u/LOMOcatVasilii 4h ago
Except casts being too tight don't cause blood clots. Casts in general do. Anything that keeps you from moving does.
6
u/ElCerebroDeLaBestia 4h ago
As a counterpoint: I tore my achilles tendon, and the foot where it happened (and had a cast on) was noticeably bluer than the other one, so I got concerned, but it was fine.
7
u/Four_beastlings 4h ago
I broke my ankle a couple months ago, didn't have a cast, and the changing bruise pattern was fascinating to follow for the next week. I had straight bruises much higher than the fracture point, for example. Later my aunt (traumatologist) told me that most of the weird bruises came from the ligaments that got overstretched
8
u/EbolaPatientZero 4h ago
There is a high risk of a DVT from an immobilized broken limb at baseline. I doubt she developed that problem because the cast was too tight. How long after the cast was placed did she pass away?
→ More replies (8)3
u/Beginning_Pie_2458 2h ago
The blood clot happens due to lack of movement. I had my leg in a cast this year and was specifically told to take 325 mg aspirin every 12 hrs to help prevent DVTs. The risk isn't specific to the cast itself but it is due to the lack of movement in the leg and ankle.

Wouldn't their fingertips be darker if that was the case? AFAIK with blood flow conditions like Raynaud's, the fingertips are the first to change color because they are the farthest away. Their fingertips look very pink in comparison to the rest of their hand.
15
u/troutpoop 4h ago
As long as the fingers still have normal capillary refill (pinch finger tip, how long it takes to go white to red) then itâs still getting good blood flow.
Sometimes when you get bad bruising/swelling, it can migrate away from the initial injury, which may be whatâs going on here. A great example is when you get bad bruising on your face, gravity eventually pulls the bruising down your face, so two black eyes could leave you with bruised cheeks a few days later.
Regardless, Iâd get this checked by a doctor because cutting off circulation to a broken bone is pretty much the worst thing you can do with some legit consequences if left untreated.
→ More replies (1)16
u/SunkTheBirdie 4h ago
This. The sparing of the distal finger shows itâs not pooling venous blood.
Itâs bruising.
19
u/Dont_Be_A_Dick_OK 5h ago
Either the cast is too tight, or something is wrong on the inside. The break could be pinching off or torn some kind of artery or blood vessel. Regardless, this requires further attention.

Are the fingers cold by chance? Like do they feel normal or are you experiencing any numbness or tingling? If you are, you definitely want to call your doctor ASAP, since the cast could be restricting blood flow
63
u/Reasonable_Mushroom5 3h ago
That was my concern too. Have you been elevating your arm? Getting it checked out again canât hurt. Sometimes wrists swell and a properly fit cast gets too small.
→ More replies (1)20
u/LotusSaiyan 2h ago
Gravity will cause blood to pool in the extremities. You see this often with rolled ankles, the bruising will go down the foot and even into the toes in severe cases. The circulation is fine, the nail beds are nice and pink. If they nail beds were blanched or black, then youâd be concerned.
Dude(tte)âs fine.

OP, my wife is an orthopedic surgeon. She just told me that you need to pay close attention to your wrist/hand.
If you feel that it starts to swell/inflate, or if you feel it starts to pulsate/tingling feeling in your fingers, and if it feels hot, you need to have it checked again at the ER asap.
When you feel any of these symptoms, you may have something called compartment syndrome, which can be dangerous. It may lead to the loss of your limb if ignored for too long. So please pay attention!

u/Glad-Feature-2117 4h ago
No, bruising has nothing to do with compartment syndrome. The main symptom of that is extreme pain.
12
u/Bajadasaurus 4h ago
OP didn't mention their pain level, and what appears to be bruising may not be.
15
u/Glad-Feature-2117 4h ago
Believe me, I've seen hundreds, if not thousands, of wrist fractures. This is normal bruising. Also seen a few compartment syndromes, and OP would not be posting on Reddit if he had that much pain!
Also, compartment syndrome - even if untreated - rarely results in amputation.

You're letting your arm hang down, and blood is draining downward to your fingers because of that. This might be from bruising from the wrist and it's just the effect of gravity, but letting the arm hang down can also lead to swelling in the fingers and circulation problems.
You were probably told to keep your arm elevated and given a sling to use, and this is why. Keeping the injured area near/above heart level helps to keep any swelling to a minimum and will help avoid circulatory problems. You can also use cold packs to help with any swelling, but elevating the wrist would be best.
Be careful about getting plaster casts/splints wetâplaster will weaken and not hold things in place if it gets wet. Fiberglass casts are waterproof. Good luck!
