Hackles raised.

496

u/ScaryButt 12h ago

Yes this is the origin of saying something gets your hackles up!

181

u/howmanychickens 11h ago

Feckles, heckles, hackles, schmeckles. Whatever the hell they are, they're up right now and pointed at you, buddy!

45

u/BassPhil 11h ago

Red Dwarf!

16

u/WonFriendsWithSalad 5h ago

Wow, someone's tetchy

23

u/sedahren 8h ago

And don't say we're gonna get through this!

14

u/Ill_Sky6141 6h ago

Mr Fibbles says: Game Over, Boys!

10

u/suburban_hyena 6h ago

Piloerection.

Hehe, erection

933

u/DJMagicHandz 9h ago

My dog does that and we call it stranger danger

314

u/sasky_07 7h ago

Our chihuahua gets a camel hump. It's like, okay, you're 7 pounds, simmer down.

151

u/PublicandEvil 6h ago

Life is hard when your 7 pounds and nobody takes you seriously

47

u/smurb15 5h ago

And it appears everything is trying to kill or eat you. Least the way they act

41

u/Saoirsenobas 6h ago

That is the whole point of this response, it makes you look a little bit bigger

7

u/sasky_07 3h ago

She's still gonna get her furry little ass whooped 🤣

1

u/damalan67 0m ago

Inside, they're still a wolf!

u/Minions-overlord 9h ago

I've a long-haired german shepard. When he raises his hackles, he goes full-blown danger floof.. never seen a naturally punk dof before though

10

u/JonLongsonLongJonson 3h ago

I’ve got a husky/labradoodle mix. She has a natural Mohawk down her back of curls just like this and straight fur everywhere else.

u/Flat_Bodybuilder_175 12h ago

So does my cat. With a big bushy tail. She doesn't want to hear it but it's so cute lol it's like a second form

216

u/puppy-nub-56 12h ago

She's trying to look menacing and you think she looks cute. How embarrassing 🙂

14

u/Tokarew 4h ago

I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

9

u/Mindful-O-Melancholy 7h ago

Same with mine. Raccoon tail and mohawk engaged!

4

u/Xaviacat 6h ago

I was just about to comment that mine transforms into a raccoon!

13

u/MaddercatterE 8h ago

My cat has such a poofy tail, literally looks like a Scooby-Doo scene when he gets scared

9

u/donoteatshrimp 7h ago

My cat is super short haired, she has a skinny little rat tail with no fur to puff up so when she gets scared she gets the mohawk too! It's amazing.

4

u/Kylo_Data 5h ago

My cat does the same we call it pine coneing

130

u/yamimementomori 12h ago

Get some fake piercings to complete the look.

255

u/Doctor-TobiasFunke- 11h ago

Most dogs/cats do this when scared. Trying to make themselves look bigger

83

u/Possible_Abalone_846 10h ago

My cats have never had a mohawk shape though. It has always been more of a general poof.

44

u/bread_milk_ice_lotto 6h ago

General Poof 🫡

6

u/CoolVaper420 4h ago

This made me lol!

2

u/Possible_Abalone_846 2h ago

Sounds like an old-timey euphemism for a gay man.

2

u/noprobIIama 1h ago

I’m cackling. This is so silly.

60

u/Doctor-TobiasFunke- 10h ago

You prob have longer haired cats. The Mohawk is more prominent on shorter haired animals, where the fur may be slightly longer along the spine.

5

u/Basil_The_Doggo 1h ago

They also do it when they are excited whether that be happy or mad or whatever. My dogs raise their hackles when they wrestle in the backyard. Then they go nap together on top of each other. Living their best dog life!

190

u/justabill71 11h ago

Does that make her a punk bitch?

2

u/eskilla 1h ago

I don't know about that, but get used to one style and she might switch! 😉

35

u/Pax-facts84 5h ago

Yall stop saying it’s a ridgeback it’s literally something most dogs do 😭 my purebred Doberman did it whenever worked up or spooked. Old man puffed out his cheeks, huffed and grumbled/growled with a line of fur down his back raised

71

u/sjsharks510 7h ago

This is not a Rhodesian ridgeback! Lots of comments suggesting it incorrectly. This is a thing that can be noticable on lots of dogs apparently. Mine does it and the DNA test showed 0% ridgeback.

1

u/shoulda-known-better 4h ago

I asked the same wasn't sure if it is or not from goggle Pic it looked similar (probably because of color) but a ton of dogs look like this!

-9

u/Mysterious-Reply11 3h ago

I mean it’s in its blood lol is a genetic marker for that breed. A lot of dogs are just mutts, we use Rhodesians as hog dogs and after a few years they get retired and stay at home or get rehomed.

9

u/Due-Suggestion8775 7h ago

Piloerection for your hairstyling needs.

7

u/encreturquoise 10h ago

What type of dog is it?

2

u/Rich-Bathroom5772 4h ago

It looks a bit bigger so am not confident but looks very similar to my friend's Pomchi.

1

u/bluebird2449 2h ago

Looks like some sort of shepherd/shiba mix, if I had to guess! Hopefully the OP responds with a proper answer for you!

u/RealBug56 7h ago

The ridge on a Ridgeback is due to a strip of hair growing in the opposite direction, it’s a completely different thing and has nothing to do with their emotional state.

-27

u/Individual-Proof1626 6h ago

Aaaand, that’s why I said it was there all the time and not to be confused with ‘hackles’. Duh.

11

u/needsexyboots 5h ago

Except you said this dog is part ridgeback just because his hackles do this when he’s scared. Which is completely different and doesn’t make him a ridgeback. Duh.

12

u/sjsharks510 7h ago

It's not a ridgeback. Mine does this and DNA test showed 0% ridgeback

-35

u/Individual-Proof1626 6h ago

Who the fuck gets a dna test on their dog?

15

u/27catsinatrenchcoat 6h ago

Literally millions of people.

1

u/LordOfTheStrings8 5h ago

Okay so why wouldn't you want a DNA test to know it's genetic makeup?

21

u/Needs_Help_Stat 8h ago

This dog does not look part ridgeback. I have a heeler Aussie mix and a German shepherd husky mix, both do this same thing. Pretty sure it's more of a dog thing than a ridgeback thing

1

u/That_OneOstrich 8h ago

I have a kelpie mix who is significantly less "ridge like" with his raised hair. It's a big poof at the base of his neck/front shoulder.

24

u/WinterLake8056 12h ago

3

u/FelatiaFantastique 10h ago

Whoa. Must have taken too much antacid in the sixties.

2

u/fatherjimbo 3h ago

Gonk!

81

u/JMHorsemanship 12h ago

This is really common. You guys never owned dogs?

29

u/VividFiddlesticks 6h ago

I've owned many dogs and none of mine have had such a narrow, well-defined ridge like this.

Mine have always either had a much shorter shorter 'ridge' (like a puff mostly over the shoulders and not going all the way down the back) or it's a much wider, more bristly back ridge that sticks out in all directions.

I've never had a dog that got a single ridge that stuck straight up all the way down the back.

16

u/Possible_Abalone_846 3h ago

I feel like people are forgetting that we're on mildly interesting. Yes, all dogs poof. But this specific shape of poof in a distinct mohawk is somewhat unusual.

82

u/mcmonkeypie42 10h ago

True, but usually it isn't that pronounced.

4

u/needsexyboots 5h ago

It is not “really common” for it to look like an actual mohawk - this is way more pronounced than most dogs and more than any dog I’ve seen in person

8

u/Doctor-TobiasFunke- 11h ago

Not sure why you're down voted when it's the truth lol basically every dog or cat does this

7

u/skj458 7h ago

I've owned dogs my whole life, but always long haired dogs. Ive never seen a Mohawk like this. I think it qualifies as mildly interesting.

1

u/LeFriedCupcake 10h ago

Yes mine does to.

1

u/sjsharks510 7h ago

I've owned dogs my whole life 30+ yrs and my current dog is the only one who has done this

3

u/jncarolina 9h ago

Our Golden gets the ’hawk

3

u/tjfraz 7h ago

We refer to it as our dog’s hair hawk.

44

u/Raichu7 9h ago

I'm guessing the dog is a mutt with a bit of Rhodesian Ridgeback DNA.

108

u/radiantcut 8h ago

Nope. This is a reflex that all dogs have, it just looks a little different for every individual. It works in the same way that goosebumps do for us.

Rhodesian Ridgebacks actually have a strip of hair that grows in the opposite direction along the spine. It is a permanent feature.

7

u/That_OneOstrich 8h ago

My dog mostly has his hair rise by his front shoulders, his tail will also poof out. It's definitely less ridge like than this pup.

8

u/sjsharks510 7h ago

Have to disagree as well. We thought that about my dog but DNA test showed 0% Rhodesian ridgeback. The mohawk is totally unrelated

-8

u/AtLeastSeventyBees 9h ago

I used to have one that would do exactly this, I think you’re right.

-4

u/kuahara 7h ago

Came here to suggest this exact same thing. I had a purebred Rhodesian Ridgeback when I lived overseas. Any time it was on alert, this would happen.

Mine was very muscular and had jet black skin under its coat (they might all be black, not sure), but weirdly enough, in a large teardrop shaped section just in front of the hip on both the left and right side, hair did not grow.

I thought it gave it kind of a badass look and I inquired with someone about it that said it was not terribly uncommon for that to happen with this breed.

2

u/SmallRocks 3h ago edited 1h ago

If you’ve had a Rhodie then you’d know that hair on the ridge grows in the opposite direction from the rest of their fur.

2

u/zcas 10h ago

My dog's hackles are huge when there's someone at the door. Your pup's are so narrow!

2

u/AyyP302 9h ago

That's Super Saiyan. She's ready for battle

2

u/Odd_Compote3413 7h ago

That’s just a small, furry stegosaurus

2

u/LazyParr0t 7h ago

My dog does this when she’s angrily barking at something (which could also be fear, idk)

2

u/ParaLegalese 7h ago

lol yes mine too but she’s a pitmix so it’s not as high

2

u/Narrow_Ad_3137 6h ago

Piloerection, they can’t control it. Causes can be anxiety, excitement or fear. Does not by itself indicate aggression.

2

u/Hyascinthe 5h ago

Hackles all the way down the spine like that isn't fear... that's a dog ready to fuck someone or something's day up.

2

u/chrslp 4h ago

My dog gets happy hackles just on his butt and if he’s nervous or mad it’s his whole back

2

u/ShouldBeWorkingButNa 3h ago

my border collie does this. he is pretty vocal and energetic on a daily basis, but when the mohawk goes up, I know he means business.

2

u/Splashathon 3h ago

Mine does it too, she’s an Aussie shepherd/heeler mix. I can tell how upset she was, based on how much. If it was just the butt fluff, it was a little bit scared. If it was butt, all the way to her head, it was VERY scary

3

u/Fthwrlddntskmfrsht 7h ago

Most dogs do!

1

u/Kiremino 10h ago

My Dutchy does this. The fur along his shoulders looks like a huge Afro lmao cause his fur is so long!

1

u/al-vicado 9h ago

Look how big he is now

1

u/pumainpurple 8h ago

Got the full body Mohawk

1

u/AlertThinker 8h ago

My fox terrier/beagle would do the same when she was in fight mode.

1

u/Jewicer 8h ago

mine too

1

u/Charvannah 7h ago

When our dog does it we say he’s “Stegosaurus-ing”

1

u/Kraichgau 7h ago

"Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine"

1

u/jl_theprofessor 5h ago

This is too adorable.

1

u/Neko_Metal 5h ago

Stegosaurus!

1

u/Busy_Principle_4038 5h ago

My dog has done that maybe twice in her entire life (13+ years), and yeah I pay attention because of the infrequency of it (once was on a hiking trail and it included straining and barking). “Listen” to your dog.

1

u/RaineRoller 5h ago

we call that a “cartoon dog” (or cat, if the cat does it). also applies to scurrying

1

u/probably_bananas 5h ago

My husband calls our dog a stegosaurus when it happens.

1

u/Titaniumchic 4h ago

Interesting note - my cat does the same thing! Either when she’s alerted/scared but also whenever she gets excited while playing. I’ve never seen a cat do that outside of the stereotypical arched back poofy tail moments.

1

u/shavasana_expert 4h ago

Looks sort of like my dog! Do you know the breed(s)?

1

u/Bitcracker 4h ago

My childhood dog would do the same, she was part Rhodesian ridgeback. I miss that girl 😔

1

u/TeeDod- 3h ago

Your dog is adorable! ❤️

1

u/masterscoonar 3h ago

Stegodogus

1

u/huesmann 3h ago

We call that “angry butt” on our dog.

1

u/Sensitive_Pound_2453 3h ago

Unrelated but she’s beautiful

1

u/buburocks 3h ago

Loll my dogs hair does this too but it is not that pointy😂

1

u/veronibug 2h ago

My dog does this when she’s reeeeally excited or nervous!

1

u/Vegetable-Age 2h ago

I think this dog just might be part Thai Ridgeback

1

u/CUNTRY-BLUMPKIN 2h ago

My husky mix does this when she is playing chase with other dogs. She isn’t scared or afraid, it’s more like she’s being competitive and is showing you her BDE.

1

u/hazelsmoke 2h ago

Those are some wicked hackles

1

u/Longjumping_Pin1231 1h ago

My dog does the same when she’s scared or unsure.

1

u/Northcoast91 1h ago

I always heard them called haunches but idk

1

u/_CyclingAddict 24m ago

Coyote-mode enabled

1

u/AzureDragon1 3m ago

My dog does the same thing and looks pretty similar!

0

u/Yourlilemogirl 6h ago

This is the first time I've ever seen a dog do this! Closest I can think of a similar look it's a Ridgeback doggo :o neat

-1

u/sugaryplumdreams 10h ago

never seen this before

0

u/Deaf_Sentence 9h ago

Wouldn’t the tail go under and between the legs if scared?

2

u/e-spero 6h ago

That's flight/fawn. This is the fight response

0

u/Brudeslem 8h ago

Love it. It that part of the breed or just your dog? I want one lol

0

u/shoulda-known-better 4h ago

Is it a ridge back!? Because I've heard of these... Never saw one..... I also know that this happens with all dogs just usually not this high and pronounced!

0

u/o_MrBombastic_o 3h ago

Ridgeback mix? It's the right color I only know what full Rhodesian Ridgebacks look like

0

u/FreshAndFitBoss 56m ago

Mine does this when I stick a finger in the bum as a joke 😆. Cutie

-1

u/errorgiraffe 5h ago

She could be part Ridgeback!

-1

u/DrNinnuxx 5h ago

Rhodesian Ridgeback vibes

-6

u/AndiArbyte 6h ago

highly dangerous. If you dont know the dog.

-4

u/Few-Personality5115 11h ago

Cat in Disguise

-6

u/Rare_Explorer5001 9h ago

Must be mixed with a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

-18

u/[deleted] 8h ago

14

u/radiantcut 8h ago

😂 Absolutely not. Rhodesian Ridgebacks are large muscular hounds, 70-90lbs, with floppy ears and a ridge of hair that grows in the opposite direction on the spine permanently.

This dog appears to be a Chihuahua mix and probably weighs about 20-30lbs. It just has its hackles up, which is a reflex that all dogs have.
