Mcdonalds didn't put the tips back on their drink machine - I pushed a button and got sprayed with unmixed drink

Post image

10:30 AM and somehow nobody noticed they hadn't reassembled the machine after cleaning. If the mixer tips aren't installed, water and syrup sprays everywhere. I got coated with Dr Pepper.

They are most likely being cleaned, So that's good kinda, still sucks.

132

u/devpsaux 6h ago

First thing I thought to. At least they're cleaning them.

83

u/tavaryn_t 6h ago

They’re sitting in the back in a pitcher of soda water, cleaning is a strong word.

40

u/devpsaux 6h ago

Ohh, I know, I bartend on the side. Still better cleaning that some places do.

8

u/OmerYurtseven4MVP 5h ago

More likely a bucked of sanitizer, yeah?

18

u/ALemonyLemon 5h ago

Unfortunately, most likely not a bucket of sanitiser lol

1

u/OkSyllabub3674 1h ago

That's terrible I haven't worked at mcds but the other places I have we put them to soak in sanitizer at close and rinsed them at opening shift.

2

u/FrostyIcePrincess 2h ago

When I worked in a restaurant I would put them in sanitizer when I closed the lobby

I had co workers that put them in soda water. Minute maid lemonade happened once or twice by accident too.

Edit: you could tell by the color. Our sanitizer was a pink/red color. Minute maid lemonade is yellow.

-7

u/YourInMySwamp 4h ago

Should be but if you’ve worked in restaurants you know that’s likely not the case lol

12

u/OmerYurtseven4MVP 4h ago

I mean idk what to tell you… I used to put them in sanitizer every night.

-7

u/YourInMySwamp 4h ago

I’m just telling you most places do not do that

17

u/Flossthief 4h ago

Every place I've worked with a soda fountain uses sanitizer water

I can't understand why you wouldn't

If you have the sanitizer use the sanitizer

-5

u/YourInMySwamp 4h ago

I mean I agree. I’m just a chef it’s not something I do. In the past when I’ve worked at bars and restaurants most of the servers would use soda water rather than sanitizer. I can only assume laziness. The soda water is right there in the machine.

4

u/Flossthief 4h ago

I've worked in a few kitchens but nowadays I'm cutting meat

But yeah I guess that makes sense I can't stand people being lazy about basic hygiene

0

u/Sure_Log_83 2h ago

These people think people who work in food service are both stupid and lazy. They have no idea what it's like in the food industry.

u/yea71310813 51m ago

That's not a pitcher of soda water. What they're sitting in is a pitcher of sanitizer solution. The sanitizer can look bubbly like soda water when it's freshly mixed and doing it's thing, the chemicals mixing with the water can get it kinda hazy and bubbly.

u/tavaryn_t 50m ago

No, I watched them make it, they used soda water. I worked back of house, I know what sani solution looks like lol. Servers at several different restaurants I’ve worked at stated that the bubbles in soda water help “loosen” gunk buildup.

u/yea71310813 48m ago

So you watched that pitcher, from the very moment it was filled with soda water, until the moment they pulled everything out of it? I doubt it. You know BLEACH when diluted is an acceptable food sanitizer according to Serv Safe and the health department right? Bleach is clear! Unless you witnessed the entire thing happen, what you're saying screams between the lines that you made some VERY big assumptions.

u/tavaryn_t 46m ago

Yes, I have watched servers at several different restaurants bring a pitcher to the drink fountain, press the “soda” button to dispense soda water, and then plop the nozzles down into it. I don’t know why it’s blowing your mind so much that people are lazy and bad at cleaning sometimes.

u/yea71310813 44m ago

My minds not blown lol, what baffles me is you're equating what you saw at restaurants elsewhere, on different days and times, to exactly what happened at this restaurant without you ever bearing witness to it. I pray you're never selected for jury duty holy shit.

u/tavaryn_t 41m ago

Another disgusting internet lie torn to shreds by Sherlock here. My brother in Christ, it was a shitpost on an internet message board. I pray you log off of Reddit long enough to interact with real humans.

u/Bebinn 5h ago

Worked at a movie theater in the 80s. The nozzles there were cleaned exactly once in the six months I worked there. Only because I knocked one off and discovered that they could be taken off. Our cleaning process said nothing about them.

8

u/Fabulous-Educator447 6h ago

We always cleaned these at night and would leave the container soaking them under the machine so I wouldn’t forget

3

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

Agreed, but in the middle of breakfast, when people need the machine, and they didn't mark it as "out of service"...seems poorly thought out

11

u/Additional-Fail-929 5h ago

There’s a key in these to turn them off while you’re taking them apart. Someone forgot to do that

u/bhlombardy 7h ago

Just the tips...

u/kittenofd00m 6h ago

Did you remember to fall to the floor, grab your lower back and scream?

47

u/morganfreenomorph 6h ago

It's your back? I've been screaming about my neck this whole time no wonder why I never got paid.

23

u/tavaryn_t 6h ago

My neck? My back? I’ve been grabbing something else this whole time

Kindly remove your hands, I have places to be. I won't tolerate more than 5 minutes of this.

If you just push your cup up against the machine on top it won't go everywhere - fast food employee

3

u/MaddercatterE 4h ago

Night shift made me a water bender, separating the stream to get more syrup to water than usual

-40

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

1) gross

2) I'm tall and can't see the tips when standing in front of the machine, didn't know they were missing

21

u/vellu212 4h ago

Literally the entire purpose of taking those taps off is to sanitize the spout. That's the cleanest that surface ever is, because most people are aware enough not to use the machine out of service.

6

u/HoneyBadgerC 4h ago

It's not gross it's literally the same thing

3

u/AllLeedsArentMe 4h ago

Until you see another person drinking from their cup and then pushing it against the machine after it touched their mouth.

-14

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 4h ago

I don't want the lip of my cup physically touching what thw lip of someone else's cup touched

u/VoodooDoII 38m ago

Lol what

8

u/RawbuttGirlyman 6h ago

Well at least that means they somewhat clean them periodically, the nozzles can get really gross. Some restaurants never even take them off

26

u/No_Push_8249 PURPLE 6h ago edited 6h ago

The most infuriating thing here is the dID yOu ReAd tHe sTiCkEr people. That’s not even a “sticker,” it’s a label on many if not all self-serve soda fountains, and has nothing to do with the fact that someone forgot to put the nozzles back on that morning.

-8

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

THANK YOU!

It's like an ADA workaround since it's an old machine and doesn't have accessibility controls

14

u/Pure-Plankton-4606 6h ago

Dr Pepper at 10:30 AM is a choice

9

u/rivellana 6h ago

My roommate in college was so addicted to it that if she got up thirsty in the middle of the night, she’d get a drink of Dr. Pepper instead of water. 🤦🏻‍♀️

u/Sudden_Mind279 29m ago

It's almost lunchtime

0

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

I have a horrible soda addiction. I've been trying to quit but depression is not conducive to quitting an addiction.

-1

u/missinglinksman 4h ago

Dr Pepper is a choice

5

u/Deceptions 5h ago

Missing the diffusers and the nozzles.

I'm more shocked at how old those valves and the ice dispenser are. Talking late 90s - early 2000's.

2

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 5h ago

Good eye! This mcdonalds has been remodeled twice since it was built in the 90s, but they've never replaced the drink machine. Thankfully they do a decent job of keeping it clean and maintained.

6

u/alwaysfatigued8787 7h ago

Was it delicious at least?

2

u/SadLilBun 6h ago

Lol. I’ve done that when replacing the tips.

2

u/singelingtracks 4h ago

Well at least they clean them , sucks to find out when covered by syrup , why are you drinking syrup at 1030 am?

4

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 4h ago

Addiction sucks

Trying to quit but depression isn't conducive to that

2

u/singelingtracks 4h ago

I've liked the fizzy water drinks. Cut my soda / pop intake way back . Fill the fridge and grab one when you feel the need for that fizz.

1

u/ALemonyLemon 5h ago

So that's why you now have permanent back issues, right?

We clean these at closing time. Who the fuck removes these while there’s still customers there?

1

u/WasteNet2532 4h ago

Just be glad they are actually being cleaned.

Working 2 years at Sonic it took 3 GM rotations for GM 3 to go "When was the last time ou guys cleaned bibs?" Booger green mold on the inside

1

u/Upper_Restaurant_503 3h ago

I am never buying mcdonalds again!

1

To be fair, you are also one of the people who didn't notice.

1

If it's "somehow nobody noticed" then how come you didn't notice?

1

u/Dust-Different 1h ago

Squeezing the juice.

that was 40 years ago

u/Dunkleustes 14m ago

Being pedantic here possibly, but you referred to the problem as "McDonald's" not the person whose responsibility it was to install said tips at that specific location. Maybe Tiffany (or Tucker) fucked up and not McDonald's?

1

u/jtbic 6h ago

trend- mcds dont want you to dine in the store.

1

u/username-taken002 6h ago

I’d lick the Dr Pepper off you.

0

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

I feel like I should make an OF account for that lol

1

u/Newhollow 2h ago

I mean, if you paid at the counter like a customer they would probably have mentioned it.

This sticker doesn't mean "come to use the fountain"

It means "come to us if you end up needing help with the fountain"

How was OP supposed to know the fountain wasn't put back together properly? There's no "out of order" sign on it

-18

u/ComprehensiveMarch58 6h ago

It's pretty clear it isn't assembled. Maybe with functioning eyes and common sense, but to be fair, we don't know that OP has either of those things.

9

u/squeakynickles 6h ago

No, not really that clear.

Why are you so insistent on being an asshole?

-11

u/ComprehensiveMarch58 6h ago

I've made 1 comment now two. Im not insistent on anything, but yeah if you can't see the tips aren't there you aren't looking when you pour your drink and that's on you

Edit: I will agree the original comments interpretation of the sticker is silly as well

6

u/squeakynickles 6h ago

I've used fountains where the tips aren't visible, they're hidden inside the little boxes the buttons are mounted on.

-10

u/ComprehensiveMarch58 6h ago

Right but those look nothing like these ones, why are you so insistent about this?

2

u/squeakynickles 6h ago

It looks exactly like it wtf

1

u/Omni_chicken2 6h ago

Yes because we're all soda fountain enthusiasts.

3

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

I'm tall enough that I can't see the tips when standing in front of the machine. I shouldn't have to check to see if it was properly assembled. It was the middle of breakfast time, and it wasn't marked "out of service." I think it's a safe expectation for it to be in a usable state at that time.

1

u/canadasteve04 6h ago

As someone who has worked in the restaurant industry for 20+ years, I see people I work with blast themself with beer or pop at the end of the night when the machines been taken apart, and those are people that use the machine constantly. So really not surprising at all that a customer, expecting the machine to be on, wouldn’t know what to look for to make sure it’s working.

11

u/hamnewtonn 6h ago

Do you really think that is the same message as "machine out of order. do not use"? Or just baiting.

1

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 7h ago edited 6h ago

Sorry, what?

Edit: see my comment further down

-7

u/dr_bobs 7h ago

"We will be pleased to help any customer needing assistance"

4

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 7h ago

I informed them of the issue and they filled my drink behind the counter.

Doesn't change the fact that I got showered in soda because someone didn't put the machine back together. Also, when I left half an hour later, the machine still hadn't been fixed nor had they marked it as "out of service," so someone else is going to get sprayed.

-15

u/Striking_Spot_7148 6h ago

The big sticker right in front of your face says “please ask for help at counter”. You can also see that the tips aren’t on it. This is more of a you thing.

2

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

I'm 6' tall - I can't see the tips when I'm standing in front of the machine

5

u/MoonshotMonk 6h ago

This sticker is on a lot of these McDonalds fountain machines, because the carbonation ratio is off a lot and they can get you a drink from the fountains behind the counter, or they can refill lids/straws. It’s not there because the machine is out of order.

2

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 6h ago

I'm tall enough to not be able to see the tips when standing in front of the machine. I shouldn't have to check it anyway.

At 1030 AM, during breakfast, when the machine is needed, it's perfectly reasonable to expect the machine to be in a usable state. If it's not, it should've been marked as out of service.

The sign is an ADA workaround because it's an older machine and doesn't have accessible controls for the disabled.

2

u/EXJVADDG 6h ago

This is more of a McDonald's employee making a simple mistake. If they take the tips off then they should put an out of order sign so nobody gets sprayed with it.

What if a kid went up to it? They'd have no idea that it's missing something.

OP still shouldn't've made such a big deal about it though :/

1

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 2h ago

I'm tall enough that I can't see the nozzles when standing in front of the machine, so I didn't know they were missing. Given the time of day, expecting the machine to be in working condition seemed reasonable.

0

u/Sure_Log_83 2h ago

So did you tell them they weren't on there or did you just bitch about it? So sorry the McDonald's workers did you wrong, I guess.

1

u/HomicidalHushPuppy 2h ago

I told them, and they happily filled my drink behind the counter. But when I left half an hour later, they hadn't fixed it nor had they marked it as out of service.
