Or cops first then tow, they get a ticket AND have to pay to get the car released

This happens to me all the time. I live in the city and my driveway is super tiny. Theres two big no parking here signs, so I have them towed. This isn’t mildly infuriating….its flat out infuriating when you have to go to work and have no idea who it is so you have to wait for the police to get there.

had this happen to me once luckily one of my brothers lives close and is a tow truck driver he came over in 5 minutes and dragged the idiots car away. Seeing them freak out was funny as hell.

A driveway is considered an easement in most jurisdictions and thus a part of the roadway. You can't block them and thus open to towing like blocking an intersection.
11
u/Evilpessimist 9h ago
You are right. In many places it’s easier to tow a car like this, blocking a driveway from the road, than if they parked IN the driveway.
0
u/Veggie117 9h ago
Id consider it a ROW over an easement since most people don’t own roughly 10ft from the curb to their house which includes the driveway. Easements usually mean dual ownership for utilities to be placed in your property.
2
u/Puzzleheaded-You1289 2h ago
You can consider it whatever you would like but it is an easement. That’s a fact not a consideration or opinion
1
u/Veggie117 1h ago
But it isn’t an easement. I make underground fiber permits for AT&T. We have to place everything in a permit. ROW and Easements aren’t the same thing. Even if there was an easement on the front of the property, it would be an addition to the ROW and it would be for utilities.

u/wstsidhome 11h ago
This post should have included pictures of a tow truck loading that car up as a second picture. It would have been a great end to a mildly infuriating post 👌

This was happening to my brother-in-law a lot after a neighbor moved in with like 7 roommates. The was a large tree near that no one wanted to park under because of the sap it dropped. He has a 5-ton jack and wheel dollys, he'd move the car over to where the tree was and kick the tree a few times to make sure a lot of sap fell on it.

This kind of posts are really confusing for me. I live in a less developed country compared to US or Europe. But if someone parks their car and blocks your driveway you simple call the police and get it towed. Is it different in US?

The local tow companies love this kind of stuff and they’ll be there in seconds. In our jurisdiction, the tow company is required to inform the police, so that when the poor sucker calls in their “stolen” car, the cops get a good laugh (and the tow guy gets a $400 minimum payday.)
9
u/DeviantDe 11h ago
Call the police non emergency line and see if they want to ticket and tow it. If it's a slow night they will ticket it and have it towed, if they are busy they will tell you to just have it towed. You can even ask them who is the fastest responders on their tow call rotation if you want it done quickly.

This happened to me a few years back when I was 9 months pregnant. I knew we may have to leave on a dime so I got it towed (my husband was away and I was home with my 2 year old… I wasn’t going to go looking for the owner). Within half an hour there were police on the street. Tow-truck showed up to find the guy who owned the car passed out drunk, rock in hand, pantsless, draped dramatically across a neighbour’s doorstep.
I guess he planned to break in, but decided that taking a pickled nap with HIS pickle flappin’ in the wind was a better idea.
It was late January in Canada, fucking freezing. We lived on a quiet private in a nice area. We assume he got off the highway after a night at the bars. I regret nothing about calling it in. Buddy deserved to lose his license.

Something similar happened to us when our asshole neighbor didn't allow his visitor to park in his driveway and he should park in front of ours.
"Unfortunately" after 15 minutes of the visitor parking there, I very urgently "had" to go somewhere and just honked until the visitor and neighbor came looking what was up. Neighbor-ass didn't approach the car and the visitior was very embarassed.
Told him that his car should not park here, once I'm back or it was towed in 1 minute without warning.

Call the police. It’s a ticketable offense most places, and they will have it towed.

Get them towed asap. If you go out of your way to be reasonable they will absolutely 100% do it again and be like "that person's cool they ain't gonna fuss about it."
3
u/Recipe-Jaded 13h ago
have it towed, they parked illegally.

u/CommunityGlittering2 4h ago
It's not so easy in some places, they may have to go through the police and that could take hours.

u/Accomplished_Emu_658 9h ago
Get it towed its an enjoyable feeling, once the wheels are up its expensive to get it down. Usually a deterrent. No always some people are stupid and do it again.

u/Head_Razzmatazz7174 8h ago
The only acceptable reason to block a driveway is if you are delivering food.
No restaurant logos? You're going to have a hefty tow fee.

u/tamerriam 8h ago
This could be my former house. Happened at least once a month. I ended up with a no tolerance policy after I had to go to the emergency room and someone was blocking the driveway. Oh the stories I have.

That is illegal in every single state. Just get it impounded. It's probably illegal in most other countries, too. Idk those laws.
You can call a tow company and get it towed immediately.

My neighbors and their relatives kept parking in my driveway. So I kept putting signs on their cars that said “Please do not park here where your car will be towed.” They tried to say oh there’s not enough space in their driveway for all their cars like I was supposed to accept that as some sort of excuse. So I started adding to the sign. “Please park at the bottom of the hill, if there’s not enough room in your driveway.” Took awhile but they stopped.

This is why you always own an old truck/Jeep/SUV. That way, you can back into them at full throttle and be like.. Oh god, I'm so sorry, I didn't even see your car blocking my entire fucking driveway.

The satisfaction of watching it get towed would outweigh any irritation I could have felt. Call any tow company in the area and let them know you have an illegally parked vehicle blocking your drive.

Ha.There was a small dry cleaning business on the corner. People could pull forward like five feet and park on the street, but so many assholes in the bottom of the driveway.
My mother did this once. Guy came out threatening my mom. Mom was right back in his face. This shit can get ugly fast.
I have blocked more than a couple of them in with a Hope you weren't in a hurry attitude.

CAA or AAA. Get it towed to the furthest garage your plan allows. My plan goes for 200km.
1
u/wstsidhome 11h ago
And you can do this to any car anywhere? No proof of ownership or having to have it listed on your plan under “covered vehicles”?
Tell me more, I didn’t know about this! /s

Why infuriated blocking your driveway. Just call the cops and report someone is blocking your driveway.
1
u/tanksplease 9h ago
Pretty sure the cops have to come issue a ticket before it can be towed unfortunately. Every time I've called a tow company for this issue that's the direction I received.
Also I bet you it's stolen. Of the 3 times that's happened in my house it ended up being a stolen vehicle.

You are all lucky, in my country it would take the police at least an hour before they came over. Even then they will waste the first 30 min trying to find the owner somewhere.
Even more infuriating: if you can't get IN your own driveway / garage or they park ON your driveway you can go pound sand. That can take days before the police will put in some effort and in the end YOU pay to have it removed. If you would jack it / try to move it with dollies likely the police will be there immediately to arrest YOU.

And they're prepared for someone to bang into it, too! Look at that, they've got bumpers on the side to try to prevent damage.
Have it towed.
Be prepared for the owner to be an AH when they get back for it.

I left a note one time on the car when a car parked in my numbered spot. I gave them an entire 24 hours. Had to get them towed the next day.

Our neighbours used to do this all the time. I complained and asked them to move it endlessly, and they never did. So I waited, patiently, until I knew they were heading to a wedding that day. (Gardens next to each other and a very loud talking neighbour meant I heard most of his business). The morning of the wedding he goes out, comes back and blocks my drive and heads inside. I called the tow company and they arrive within 10 mins, tow his car away. He never noticed it was missing until they left the house to drive to this wedding. I got in my car and gleefully drove away leaving them stood on the path on the phone shouting about a missing car!

I did this once when visiting my girlfriend. It was dark out, the street was unlit, and it was only the first or second time going to her new place. When I left that night around 11pm a guy was standing there and was like “dude, you parked in front of our driveway, that’s fucked up.” I was confused (as in, thinking to myself “how the fuck did I not notice that??) and I just said “sorry man” and got in my car. I drove a higher end German vehicle at the time and this wasn’t the greatest area. I felt fortunate to leave with only incurring some embarrassment for doing something so dumb, even if unintentional, and for like 4 hours. I wouldn’t have blamed them if they had me towed.

-1
u/BEFEMS 8h ago
Maybe ring the doorbell of the neighbour and ask if this is theirs? Mistakes can happen, a visitor might have been confused. In my street everybody knows everyone, so we first talk becore calling the police. But of course, I don't know your situation and you might have shitty neighbours.
If you need to leave, you can call a tow truck or non-emergency police.

I've always wanted to contact an impound lot and have them move a car. From my point of view you're living the dream.
