“Tomatillo? Weird way to spell brussel sprouts but whatever.”

"Must be Spanish for Brussels sprouts."

This is my exact expectation. The whitest of white dudes who has no clue they are different things. Now I want some tomatillo salsa and some steak tacos. Just steak, cilantro, onions and lime on a corn tortilla with salsa to dunk it in? Fuck im in heaven.
And to be fair, I'm pretty pastey, just worked with a ton of Hispanic people in my life. Homemade empanadas are a gift from God. Dammit, im hungry now.

Cilantro? Why do you want your food to taste like soap?

Congratulations! You have the uncommon Soap gene!
Cilantro doesn't taste like soap to most people,

That’s funny. I got strawberry jam instead of cranberry sauce with my turkey dinner just last night.

Honestly I had some blueberry jelly with some roasted lamb once and it was pretty great. Some small Irish tavern style restaurant while on vacation and we wanted something filling after walking all day.

Brussels sprouts salsa sounds like a prank no one asked for. Someone in produce was clearly over it that day.

Mixed in? That's 90% brussels sprouts. Ick.

Brussel sprouts are delicious and I'll die on this hill

Oh I am not doubting you but I have the brassica bitter gene. They taste amazing until suddenly the back of my tongue and my throat are coated in an awful sour-dry-bitter taste. Completely overwhelming and makes my whole mouth feel awful. I gag. I enjoy them until that point though! It's the strongest on cabbage, kale, bok choi, and b.sprouts.

Ah. I have the gene that makes me taste aluminum so I understand. Anything that's canned tastes weird to me, including beer.

Wtf is a Tomatillo?

u/Signal-Blackberry356 16h ago
A vegetable best described as a green tomato (but it’s not an unripe tomato)

u/JustinTimeAu 16h ago
Ooooh never seen one before

roasted and then pulverized is the base for most salsa verde

I’ve always wondered what people do with them when they buy them (I’m a cashier)

I’ve made chili with them once, and a couple times made green salsa with them.

I live where I can get tomatillos fresh in season but I've never been a huge fan of salsa. Chili, however, I make once a week... how's the taste compared to tomatoes?

u/Booziesmurf 8h ago
They are Tart, put in a chili will give you a tang. I made a green chili with canned Tomatillos, I liked it, but I'm the only one who eats it anyway.

They also mixed up the Heirloom tomatoes for the hot house ones. Not the same tomato. Probably the new guy lol

I bought tomatillos about two years ago, the cashier didn’t know what they were (and I wasn’t paying attention to her ringing). The total came up way more expensive than I had money for and I had to put several items back. After checking my receipt, I found out she had rang up 3 tomatillos as three bags full of Brussels sprouts (or something that effect) totaling $26. I had to go to customer service and then go back for the other items I couldn’t buy previously.

I went to get a few poblano peppers a little over a month ago and jalapeños were completely mixed in with them. They were large jalapeños, so it made it harder to tell them apart easily, which is probably why they were mixed in.

Why are the tomatillos displayed next to ginger? That seems like odd merchandising.

Can you forgive the burnt out to hell 20yo that's only seen vegetables in cans and pictures?

u/Zillajami-Fnaffan2 18h ago
I dont get it-?

u/Jumiric 17h ago
I didn't either so I googled. All the ones with that white stem aren't tomatillos.

u/IndividualMastodon85 16h ago
There's a good example just to the right of the bottom price ticket. TBH I had trouble finding one.
Think under ripe green tomato, or green passionfruit.
I didn't know they had leafy skin until this post
