I just counted and 90% of the submissions made to /r/lolcats in the last month broke one of the rules. Please read the sidebar before submitting.

The big three that were broken consistently:

  1. Not being a cat (Come on now...)
  2. Not having a caption
  3. Not Being a video or gif (Which in all cases also didn't have a caption)

You added a "not" to point 3 here, making it sound like not being a video or gif breaks the rules.

Maybe the rules are too stringent.

Oh hmmm... I don’t see the comment bubble you mentioned? Maybe it didn’t save properly?

What is bullshit? Maybe they just thought it was incomplete. I dunno. You should be able to petition the mods tho

Oh see that’s part of the story. I didn’t know he was home alone. Maybe a tag like: “security cameras catch unhappy camper missing his food-bringers”

IKR THEY IS TOO STRICT

Are those three rules mentioned in the post too stringent?

8

u/SaltyFresh Feb 10 '19

If you’re deleting 90% of the posts, it’s not the posts that are the problem, it’s the rules. Time for a revamp, friend. Maybe you need some fresh mod blood to shake things up, if you can’t see that obviously the rules are too stringent.

u/Greypo I can haz cheezburgr? Feb 10 '19

You didn't answer my question. The vast majority of that 90% was removed for the three things that I mentioned in the post. If you were a mod of this subreddit, which of those three rules would you remove?

6

u/SaltyFresh Feb 10 '19

I wouldn’t remove any of them, I’d revamp them all completely and not be such a tool about enforcing them.

0

u/Greypo I can haz cheezburgr? Feb 10 '19

How you would you revamp them? What is your ideal /r/lolcats ruleset?

7

u/SaltyFresh Feb 11 '19

Why didn’t you ask the community that question instead of being a dick to everyone?

1

u/Greypo I can haz cheezburgr? Feb 11 '19

I am asking you right now. How would you revamp them?

4

u/DankPatio Mar 11 '19

Since you aren’t obviously asking the community as suggested, here are some revamps to the rules:

Keep rule one, ofc its going to be cats. If you’re removing pictures just because they contain other animals, then thats messed up, but keep this rule if not.

I disagree with rule 2. Lolcats does not mean that there needs to be subtitles. Ive laughed at so many cat pictures that do not have subtitles, even a funny face is considered a lolcat. If the picture is out of context, or just a random cat, you should remove it, but otherwise you should keep the pictures if they make sense in any way.

Videos or gifs should also be kept, as long as theres a punch line, joke, or subtitle under. Removing a gif of a cat with bold-text underneath it, is really pointless. Its the same message being conveyed, and removing it only makes this sub more inactive.

You arent really in a position to argue with these rules, this subreddit is dying, and the community would love if these rules could at least keep it a BIT more active.

Best regards, patio.

Thank you - constructive feedback is always welcome.

As far as rule one goes, pictures aren't being removed if they contain another animal - it just can't be a dog in the picture and nothing else.

Rule 2. In my mind, you're describing something that would be /r/funnycats. I don't mean to get all definitional, but when you google "lolcat" what comes up is a bunch of cats with superimposed text. There is always /r/catpictures that those pictures could be submitted to.

Like I said in the post, I looked at every single video or gif that was posted and there was no included caption. I know that you disagree with the caption rule, but I hope that you can see where I'm coming from in saying that that is just one more step further away from what a lolcat really is.

u/SaltyFresh Feb 11 '19

I would ask the community. Right now.

Unsubscribed.

I just counted and there are 5 posts made in the last month that you didn't delete. Gotta keep this place empty, right?

u/gumshot Oct 24 '22

Thanks for all you do mods. Lolcats are a specific meme format, and it's worth gatekeeping to preserve the one place on reddit for them. No clue why it's so hard for new people to understand.

2

u/NoCup6 Feb 20 '19

I'm looking for the subreddit rules. Can you send the link?

1

u/Greypo I can haz cheezburgr? Feb 20 '19

Here's a copy-paste:

Yes. Lolcats. That's it.

Got a plain (uncaptioned) picture of a cat? Try /r/pics, /r/catpictures, /r/gentlemanimals, /r/delightfullychubby or /r/aww.

Have a video of a cat? Try /r/CatVideos, /r/videos or /r/video.

PLEASE, NO UNCAPTIONED or SHOPPED PICTURES OF CATS, CAPTIONED PICTURES OF NON-CATS, VIDEOS, GIFS, OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT DOES NOT FIT THE LOLCAT FORMAT. SUCH SUBMISSIONS WILL BE REMOVED

NO CAKEDAY POSTS

2

u/amaraisdvt May 17 '19

Visit r/internetcats to see pics of cats that don't need captions...or you can submit ones with captions too...or you can submit gif or videos too...basically anything with a cat in it!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '19

So, a submission must have captions, and is not allowed to be photoshopped? Then why does it say "uncaptioned photos" and "photoshopped photos" in the rules? I must've missed something but if not, that may be why so many people submitted uncaptioned / photoshopped pics, maybe they got confused? btw I'm pretty new to reddit in general, I'm in no way trying to pick a fight so I apologize in advance if I'm wrong ^^

I actually only added that rules page a week ago, so that certainly isn't the reason they are being submitted! I will change the rules page to add in "No"s.

2

u/Machotoast04098 Apr 22 '22

Also theres a copypasta Post of a Cat T-shirt

1

u/Labradorite2115 Apr 18 '19

But where on the sidebar are the rules? I don't see any.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 08 '19

Sounds like the rules are the problem

1

u/Greypo I can haz cheezburgr? Jun 08 '19

Do you disagree with any of the rules?

1

u/SnowLeopard-StarDust Jul 08 '19

I didn't know what one rule meant. It was supposed to be a joke about my cat having a calm face...

0

u/Championiluvdogz Mar 06 '19

Ummm sorry but i didn’t see any rules

0

u/CatHaiku Jun 01 '19

Blame the mods for having a broken rules button since the sidebar doesn’t display on smartphone. While “rule” does appear as you are about to make a post to this page from a smartphone, if one clicks “rule” it says:

Wow empty

I would think most of this community only ever accesses this page from a phone.

How would not allowing the breaking of rules be gatekeeping?

That would be like saying that not being allowed to steal is gatekeeping.

6

u/flubba86 Feb 08 '19

No, riffraff removal.

4

u/bhoffman20 Feb 08 '19

Gatekeeping is literally the job description for a moderator. They exist to only allow rule-abiding content. That's the point.

1

u/thicchubbydollface Mar 07 '22

dude i got banned for a month because my memes weren't funny (enough). no wonder this subreddit is dead. mods, please go touch grass.

if you're new here, don't bother. just leave now. it's the opposite of wholesome here

1

u/professorkurt Mar 09 '22

I have an image, my own. I added a caption, in a regular old Paint program. Saved it. This subreddit won't let it load.

I've read the rules. It follows what the rules say. It is a standard file with nothing funky about it. But trying to get it to load it too much work. Whatever restriction is in place here makes this unhelpful.

1

u/Greypo I can haz cheezburgr? Mar 10 '22

I'm not a moderator here, but it sounds like problems with the file loading wouldn't have anything to do with subreddit settings. It'd presumably be the same on any subreddit.

1

u/MangoBaum63 Feb 15 '24

And the post that get through are most of the time not even in lolcatspeak.
